Thanks, bummer that it doesn't fit. Do you by any chance know where I can find a DVD drive that can fit in the y510p or if there is anything else I can put in the ultrabay so that there isn't a gaping hole in the side when I want more battery life/less heat?

I chatted with Lenovo and they said they are currently sold out of the DVD and would not offer the Bluray as stand alone.

I bought my y510p about two months ago, and it was working fine when I got it. Recently, my wifi speeds have dropped significantly, I've tried a USB wireless adapter and my wireless speeds go up. Additionally, I've checked the speeds on my phone and my laptop is severely lacking in that department. I've already tried updating the drivers (I think I've done that correctly), and saw no improvement. Any suggestions for a fix, or do I just need to call Lenovo and ask them to check on my wireless card?

You need to have 5 posts that are mod-approved in T|I before you can download it.

So two questions, is 8.1 stable yet on the sli model. If so is there and guides to make sure the Upgrade goes smooth. Also what verison drivers should I be for wifi. I used to be at 14.8 but somehow went up to 15.10.3.2. Which one?

And does the mod work with all the bios versions?

8.1 does not support SLI w/o updating the firmware on the second card. I haven't done it yet so on my test 8.1 install on the M.2 SSD the nvidia drivers only support the single onboard 750 GPU.

You will need to check the first post in the thread. I have the older bios which was one of the first he supported. I think he supported 4 different Y410/Y510 bios versions last time I checked.

    Cheers,

Update the BIOS on the second card, it works great afterward. I'm on 8.1 pro w/ the latest nvidia drivers (I believe they're from 11/19), and everything runs perfectly

Hello. Any word yet on GT755M standalone card from Lenovo ? I've a y510p with built-in GT755M, been looking forward to getting another one seeing SWTOR is being really laggy with my single one ( which isn't normal anyway -_-" )

Also, did you fellas who ordered GT750M have any issues getting it to work under Windows 7 ? I'm one of those people who nuked the entire preinstalled Windows 8 installation and installed Win7, would hate to have to go back to 8.

    Hi everyone,
I recently became an y510p owner aswell. Mine is a dual 755m setup. I replaced the harddrive with a ssd, and its awesome!

I have one problem though: the ultrabay 755m overheats like crazy.
    y510ptemps.png

And that is only from 30 minutes of BF4.

I have repasted the gpu 3 times now and it seems to get worse ( tried different amounts of thermal paste because I read this thread : http://forum.notebookreview.com/ideapad-essential/732097-lenovo-y510p-heat-fan-question.html)
I also modified the heatsink strings to be "longer" so it presses harder on the gpu.

Here's a picture of the gpu:
    IMG_20131119_144146_397.jpg
Should I remove the plastic film ? You can see there's some residue from the factory paste job thats underneath the film. You can also see there's some "air" under the film due to this aswell. Could this be my heat "blanket" ? Would removing this film help ? What about warranty ?

Any help would be appreciated guys,

    Thanks

It's not necessary but if you want it to look clean then you can. The plastic film is not covering any part of the die and is not creating any air pockets and the part of of the chip covered by plastic is not even touching the heatsink base anyways. Please be careful with how much pressure you apply as you may end up cracking the die and killing your card. You may just want to use a laptop cooling pad to get better cooling performance.

deadeyesamoy - yeah, a laptop cooler can be the solution but usually that is necessary only for laptops with a deficient cooling system else can break the natural the airflow of the machine and tho not help at all..also i don't really know if a cooler can help you with this problem since the ultrabay GPU has a flaw by design (and not only yours, all Y510 have this) i know, bcs i had one too, that was replaced bcs of the same problem and the new one i got had the same problem, and exactly those were my temps of the GPU from ultrabay: 98-99 celcius after 30 min of borderlands 2. And the things don't stop here: bcs at about 95-96 celcius the GPU starts trottling so you the GPU will make your game experience even worse. ex: for me Borderlands 2 worked much better and fluid with SLI disabled, so running only with one GPU ..on SLI worked well to, but only about 10-15 minutes until the GPU from ultrabay starts throttling then i experienced freezes and such. CPU also heats like crazy in the summer..reaching about 97 celcius while playing same game at a room temperature of ~ 30 celcius. In the end i finished by returning the 2nd laptop and getting my money back. It's a nice machine which can provide good performances..but only if Lenovo works at the cooling system.

I would not reccommend removing the film, since the heatsink is easily warped, and can touch the little resistor/capacitors there. You can try what I did, cut a piece of 0,5mm gap pad around the chip. No touch hazard, even heat is transferred. Be very-very careful with ultrabay card, since card is weak, and overtightened screws can lead to warped board. I redid the mounting with spacer and rubber ring from old EK vga block, and it warps very bad. a custom made backplate would be a good way, but didn't had the time to make one.

Longer bolts wont give you better pressure, insert a spacer between the heatsink and the spring. Did a short guide over Techinferno, and here, with pictures, easy to follow.

However, this wont give you lower temps over long duration load, because of the bottom plate. The ultrabay can only get fresh air over a 2 cm2 area.
Did some mod there. Check attachment.
    ultra.jpg
did removed the dust filter as well.

@ GeorgiE, I would not say, ultrabay in itself is a flaw, but yeah, there are room for improvement. First, the breathing hole is small, upper mod can help on that, but if it were my design, I would made that with mesh case, and venting the fresh air through it.
Different pcb layout with fan closer to slot and double heatpipe and wider heatsink.

Check this qucik aida4 run, especially the ultrabay temp. With proper mount, this heatsink is not bad.

panzer06 - The model of y510p that you purchased originally came with 1TB HDD + the 24GB SSD correct? And the 128GB M.2 SSD that you added replaced the 24GB in the same slot, correct? Do you (or anyone) know if all models, including the ones that don't come with the 24GB SSD have that slot available?

    Basically:

    - Each and every single model you buy directly off *LENOVO* comes with the M.2 adapter
    - Every model you buy somewhere else (amazon/Xotic/Canadacomputers/Newegg) doesn't come with the adapter, but has a 8GB SSHD to compensate.

Ok thats good. But aren't those other places just reselling the Lenovo models? Or does Lenovo make separate models for resellers?

Still wondering why the rep i spoke with at lenovo told me these machines comes with a PCIe slot to attach an SSD, yet I can't find it in any of the manuals. :S

Hello, guys. I recently bought my Y510P i7 With 750M SLI, and I do enjoy it, but i do have one issue with the screen, it starts to flickr when i lower the brightness, and you can only see it on darker content. On full brightness it look fine. Heres some fotage: Y510P Screen Flicks - YouTube I lower the brightness in about 0:16. Any ideas?

So I'm trying to decide on which y510p model to purchase. The Intel 7260 b/g/n Wireless chip should be better than the Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230 chip, right? Just making sure, because for some odd reason the Centrino y510p costs more.

Very interesting concept, however the price and only mediocre performance still make me lean towards a full SSD only for my HDD bay (I don't have an M.2 slot). A $200 price point would be more in line. Maybe a boxing day sale... :p

Does Y510p have severe overheating ant throttling issue? I ordered the new 755M SLI model and it is on the way now. But it seems the cooling is really bad according to some replies. Is that true? Is there any way to solve the problem except a cooling pad?

CPU and GPU0 stay in the 80°C range, and with proper undervolting throttling can be elminated.

GPU1 (Ultrabay) is the hot one, can it 98°C. I recommend either downclocking and/or repasting it.

You sure about the machines that doesn't have any SSD built in or has 8gb SSD built in? My understanding was that only machines with the 24gb SSD has the M.2 port....(it looks like on Lenovo Canada's website, they only have no SSD built in or has 24gb built in).

I recently got the y510p with 750M SLI (probably runs less hot than the 755M SLI). Undervolting really helped with the temperatures of the CPU (and as a result, the GPU next to it). I recommend having a good notebook cooler with the fans blowing at the right spots (I have a Notepal U3 where the fans are movable). My ultrabay gets hot, but haven't seen the 90+ temperatures....

After having this AW 14 for a week or so I beginning to better appreciate my Y510p. The Alienware is thicker, heavier (well it looks like it's heavier) and much louder. Plus I really like the Lenovo screen. Having a decent wifi card and being able to upgrade things w/o hacking the bios is a plus for any non-Lenovo/HP/Toshiba.

True, but since Lenovo actually ships some models with the 7260, wouldn't it be possible to upgrade the Wifi without modding the bios?

Geez what going on with the y510p's 750/755m ultrabay. I have a 650m ultrabay in my y400, which should have worse cooling than the y500/510p, yet its temperature never gets higher than the mid 70s. I'm assuming there's some sort of defect in this batch.

The cooling design is poor on all of them, the difference is that the higher clock speeds and voltages combined with the possibilities of poor factory paste jobs and lower binned chips push the 750M/755M Ultrabays over the edge.

Try on War Thunder and try to lower your brightness and check if the backround starts to move. You wont be able to see it as good as on video (cause the camera), but it will start to shake litle bit.

Will this work on a y510p? I have ordered my laptop (with SLI 755ms) but am curious if this would work. It would allow me to burn disks, which i want, but also to save battery life by taking out the SLI card and using Nvidia Optimus.

Can't find any in Canada outside of ebay. And a matte display is preferred.

In power options I have it set so the screen turns off at 25min and the computer is to go to sleep at 30 mins but it never goes to sleep.

    Anybody have this problem?

Could it be that i always have an external mouse and keyboard hooked up?

its also pretty much always hooked up to my tv via hdmi.
