The "problem" is that Windows wants Secure boot to be enabled, and will annoy you until you enable it (via the stock BIOS). This does not fix the problem (as the modded bios is not compatible with secure boot), instead it just hides the annoying watermark.

Secure boot is used basically to prevent any non-MS approved OS from booting on your computer, protecting you from rootkits. However putting a BIOS password and encrypting your data is a much, much better prevention method, as nothing stops a hacker from putting your HDD into another device to bypass secure boot and gain access to your files.

Well then what can I do to enable it to function again because it will not let me do it in BIOS.

I did and the problem is still there. Oh well, I was going to disable it soon anyway to update to a better Wifi card anyway, the 2230 is god awful.

On Lenovo's website it looks like you can order the y510p with 755 SLI, Intel 7260 b/g/n Wireless (2x2 BGN), and Windows 8.1. No coupon codes yet but I expect that will change soon.

Hey guys, I know you can put a Hard Drive into the Ultrabay, but can this be a bootable hard drive with Windows on it, or is it just for storage?

If it's just for storage, how difficult is it to open the y510p in order to put an SDD into the internal hard disk slot?

    Hello again...

I don't think this was resolved but was briefly mentioned a while back. I have both y500 and y510 right now. Running dxdiag on both...

    Y500 display
    name: nvidia geforce gt 650m
    chip type: geforce gt 650m
    dac type: integraded RAMDAC
    approx total memory: 4042 mb

    Y510 display
    name: intel HD graphics 4600
chip type: intel HD graphics family
    dac type: internal
    approx total memory: 1792 mb

    So....why isn't my y510p up to speed? I'm 99.9% sure I bought it with a decent GT750m

The contents of the ultrabay are unbootable without chain loading. Because of this, i recommend placing a SSD in the main bay and then reallocating the HDD to the ultrabay.

    Thanks Jobine.

Do you know if it's difficult to remove the bottom plate from the y510p? Most laptops I've seen tend to have little compartment panels for the hard drive, ram, etc, but the y510p has just one big piece of plastic with multiple screws.

Is updating to 8.1 on sli model safe yet? If so any guide to how to do it and keep everything in tact. I'm a noob I don't know where to install it and out factory the boot times are so fast I don't want to eff it up.

Also looks like my n 2230 went back to 15.10.3.2 drivers. Its intel drivers, is that the correct ones? I was on 14.8 before but somehow it went back t 15.10. What the correct procedure for this to not happen again

Optimus? is that a board member?

Mine has no dual 750m, DVD in my ultrabay for both.

edit: apparently optimus is this thing that switches between integrated and discrete? I wonder why the y500 shows it using both though.

The fact that my ultrabay GPU gets to 96 C while the first one stays at a pretty good 78-79 C while playing the first Crysis on all max settings kind of worries me. This heat probably has long term repercussions I'm blissfully unaware of

Either the 2nd GPU is not properly cooled or is improperly pasted. Though you can repaste Ultabay GPU without voiding the warranty.

Is anyone having range issues with their y510p? From my room, whenever I try to play a game my ping spikes as high as 7,000, where as my old laptop never had this issue.
Got my y510p several days ago, and still have not found a fix.

Most likely has to do with the low-end wireless chip being used (2230) and/or it's drivers. Newer (future) Y510p's come with AC Wifi.

Try the latest Intel wireless drivers from Intel's website. They help but really the only thing that resolved it was modding the bios (which I was loath to do) and putting a better card (Intel 6235)

I might just do that. Love the laptop, hate the wifi card
    What would be better a 6235 or a 7260?
and is AC wifi better than BGN? Don't really understand it so a explanation would be helpful!

Wireless-AC has a maximum bandwidth of 1750Mbps (faster than Gigabit ethernet) verses Wireless-N dual-band maximum bandwidth of 900Mbps. Wireless-B and Wireless-G are just added to the card for backwards-compatibility reasons.

Of course, none of this matters really unless you also have a Wireless-AC router, probably not since this is a relatively new and "cutting edge" wireless standard. That doesn't stop the 7260 from being a really nice card and I had a rock-solid connection with it on Wireless-N.

    Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying the y510p but had a few Qs for those who have one. I've gone through a bunch of pages but can't find the answers.

Does the OS come loaded onto the 24GB SSD? If not, then really what's the point of them shipping it with an SSD of such a small capacity? Can it be loaded onto the SSD? Would it make more sense to buy the lower end model with one video card, no SSD and try to get them to put in the AC wireless card and then go out and purchase a larger 120GB+ SSD and load the OS on this and keep the 1TB 5400 HDD in there as well and is that even possible with this notebook?

BTW - I'm not a big gamer so I would play some games on this machine, but I'm fine with lowering the settings to accommodate the GT750m single card. I would want the 1080p screen though for watching movies.

I can't find any configuration on the Lenovo Canada site that includes the AC wireless card. Am I missing something? And I need to ask them about the min 4 week delivery and how long it will actually take. Does anyone know?

    Thanks.

I currently have the y510p SLI GT750m version.

I do not need my second Ultrabay GT750m. I replaced it with a second hard drive.

I'm not sure if this is the right place for it, but if you're interested in buying it just send me a PM.

It has never been used. I removed it before I started the laptop for the first time.

    Pictures available. PM me.

Unscrew all of the screws on the bottom of the laptop and then gently pull the bottom panel off of the laptop. That's all there is to it. I've done it twice right out of the box to replace the hard drive.

The small 24GB SSD works as a "cache" drive and is actually a small USB sized drive inside of the laptop. I'm not sure if it can be accessed directly for file storage of your choice such as an OS and whatnot.

It would be smarter for you to go the second route. Get the laptop without the second card, replace the DVD/Optical drive with a hard drive caddy. Put the new SSD inside of the notebook and the old 1TB drive in the optical drive slot with a hard drive caddy.

If you want to access the 24GB as a regular drive you would need to use disk manager to wipe the existing partition and create a std NTFS (or FAT) partition. Or for $99 you can replace the 24GB with a 128GB boot drive and leave the 1TB in place.

    Cheers,

The only difference b/w the second 2 lowest models seems to be the 24GB SSD (59370001 model) vs the DVD drive (59369997 model) and it ends up about $70 after taxes. So it would make more sense to go for the lower model (59369997) and then grab an SSD during a black friday sale, for a few bucks more. Thanks. Hopefully I can swap out the wireless for a better network card thought.

Will any SSD fit? Or are laptop SSDs a specific size?

The minimum 4 week shipment still bothers me.

I went to a computer store today and saw an SLI model. The actual machine is bigger than I thought. It was strapped down so i couldn't feel what a 5+lb machine feels like. Do others find it on the heavier side?

The latter option is exactly what I've been wanting to do - replace the 24GB with a 128GB (or 120GB) SSD boot drive and then install Windows & applications on it. And then free the HDD space taken by Windows & apps. I just haven't yet found any reliable information about how to do that. I'm missing three things:

    1) Confirmed info about the exact type of SSD needed. My dealer sold me a 2.5" SSD, which obviously went totally wrong. Now I've been reading about M.2 or NGFF drives, but at least our local dealers here in Finland don't seem to have too many of those available. You obviously know where one could be found for $99?

    2) Info about where exactly the current 24GB SSD is located in my Y510P. I opened it yesterday but couldn't find the SSD (partly because I don't know what it should look like!). Technical documentation with this laptop was almost non-existent, but I managed to find an assembly manual that at least showed how to get the back cover open. That manual didn't tell anything about the SSD, though.

    3) Info about how to install & configure the system properly, once I've managed through 2) and 3). I'd love to be able to move my existing Win8.1 installation, applications & settings on the (128GB) SSD, but am also prepared to do a clean install if that's what it takes. However, since the Windows 8 install media is on some hidden partition on the 1TB HDD instead of optical media, I'm not sure I'll know how to do even that clean install.

Sorry if this has been covered previously. I only bought my Y510P two weeks ago and found this forum yesterday. The 240 pages of posts under this topic were a bit too heavy to read through - I did browse something like 60 pages without success :).

I can only guess it's Matte. It's not as reflective as a normal glossy screen. But then again, it could just be an anti-glare coating.

No, this one does not have the M.2 slot :( You'd have to get a higher model for that.

Click on the flickr link in my sig for pics on the location of the SSD.

    Here's where I got mine.
    Amazon.com: MyDigitalSSD SC2 Super Cache 2 42mm SATA III 6G M.2 NGFF M2 SSD Solid State Drive (128GB): Computers & Accessories

I use Acronis True Image 2014 Premium to clone my systems. I create the recovery USB stick feature in Acronis and use the little button next to where the power adapter connects to select the boot drive.

Also, I had to put the bios in legacy mode to boot from the USB stick and perform the clone. I booted once from the SSD in that legacy mode and then changed the mode back to EFI. Not sure about all the order but got the gist of it from some guy who wrote a comment on the Amazon review of this drive. The company that sells them does monitor this forum and they will respond to you.

    Best of luck to you.

    Cheers,

Just purchased the y510p. Got the lower model without an SSD and want to add one in (120-128GB) once i receive it (after 4 weeks...yuk!). Wondering what is the best way to add it.

    1) Simplest way, buy an mSATA SSD and add it to the PCIe slot. Try the above steps to move the OS and programs to the mSSD. This will not void the warranty.

    2) Buy a regular SSD, move the 1TB HDD to the ultrabay (remove the optical drive) and put the regular SSD in its place (this will more than likely void the warranty). Figure out how to move the OS and programs to the SSD. -will there be a large gain in performance doing it this way?

Opinions? Option 1 just seems so much simpler and easier but I believe will be a bit more expensive and performance won't be as good as option 2.

The SSD is not mSATA, it is M.2 and there are currently few choices on the market since it is so knew. Also, there will only be a M.2. connector on your board if you got there version with the 24GB SSD, none of the other ones have the connector.

Other option is to replace the 2.5 HDD with a 2.5 SSD.

The unit I bought, model# 59369997, is not the version with the 24GB SSD. I figured why pay $60 more for that model when I'm going to be replacing it with a larger capacity SSD anyways. The agent I spoke with is the one who gave me the details. mSSD (7mm 2.5") connects to the PCIe slot under the keyboard. Was he incorrect? Does anyone else have this model to confirm what is correct? Gotta look up a manual.

Yep, he is in correct. Even if the connector is there it is not a mSATA connector, it is a M.2. connector. But most of the laptops that don't come with the 24 GB SSD don't even have the connector installed on the mobo. You are most likely stuck with just the one 2.5 drive unless you pull the DVD/SLI ultrabay and add a caddy.

Hmm, I just re-read what you posted and it looks like they are saying you can just replace your 2.5 HDD with a 2.5 SDD which confirms what I have said.

I specifically told him what I was planning to do, to which he confirmed my above post #2403. This upsets me. I guess I won't be buying an SSD until I get the machine and can physically have a look at it. And there's always the 30 days so I could always return if I have to I guess. :S

Mine boots in like 5-8 seconds. Also, since I only use this for gaming and the occasional web search I can only comment of how fast my games load. When moving from one setting to another in Torchlight II the system takes only a second or two whereas my other system with a 5400 rpm HDD took between 5-10 seconds. Some of this is attributable to my Lenovo having a better CPU and GPU but I believe the SSD makes a big difference.

I don't benchmark so I have no idea how close it gets to meeting the advertised specs. It took some fiddling with legacy and EFI boot to get the card to boot in EFI mode. I don't remember the steps but here's the comments from an Amazon review:

    "Ayan111 says:
Hello, i just want to say. I successfully installed this ssd on a Y410p as a boot drive and was able to clone the Win 8 OS from my lenovo hdd to the ssd. I am very happy with the drive so far.

In case this helps anyone here are my steps.

    1. I went into bios and as mentioned by Matt changed boot mode to legacy support, boot priority to legacy first.
    2. I then installed the drive into the ngff slot. Then went back into bios to make sure drive showed up.
    3. In bios i then put the ngff drive as the first one in the boot order.
    4. I then cloned the hdd to the ssd using Acronis true image (this way i dont have to deal with a fresh install of windows 8).
    5. Then disconnected the hdd to make sure i can boot off the ssd.
    6. I then reconnected the hdd, wiped the hdd and repartioned it as a data drive.
    7. Last step, went back into bios and changed back to UEFI secure boot."

I don't use secure boot but other than that I think these are the steps I followed.

    Cheers,

Hey guys, I've been looking for the dvd drive that is interchangeable with the graphics card in the ultrabay, but I have had no luck in finding it. I haven't gotten the laptop yet, as I'm trying to find the dvd drive because most stores only sell the sli version, and I like having the option of using a single gpu for less heat and more battery. I know that the part I'm looking for is the Lenovo DB36 for Y500 and Y510p, but I've only been able to find the DB35 for the Y400 on Lenovos website. Will that part fit in the Y510p?

Y400 one won't fit in the Y510p/Y500 due to bezel size.

best to do it yourself. svl7 says your product key is embedded in the bios of ur system (unless ur talking about sending him the programs to create the new bios based on his backup.)

    cheers,

Do you have instructions on how to do it? Or a link to instructions?

And sending me the modded BIOS would be much appreciated!
