This is something I pulled from another thread so I don't know if it works but you can try it risk free:
"talked to a lenovo rep today regarding making a usb recovery stick on your own in case you want to install a new HDD and dont want to go through cloning software.. YOU WILL NEED A 16GB flash drive!
To do so just hit windows key+f and type in recovery and click settings on the right panel under the search.
then click on create a recovery drive. This will allow you to make a bootable drive with the usb stick, looking at the files it appears to look like os install files. Don't forget to copy the drivers folder from the D:"
Yes, remove the bloatware including McAfee and especially the Pokki software.
I undervolted mine using the intel XTU and I am actually getting better performace out of my laptop because it stays in turbo mode much longer.
Yes, you can run it with the lid closed/monitor off, just go into the Windows power settings and adjust what happens when you close the lid.
@Jobine, lol, I see you have taken my analogy and ran with it!
-
Thanks! That may just do the trick. I've already removed almost all the extra programs. Maybe the recovery USB will even save me from removing the bloatware in future installations
I am extremely impressed with the speed of the cpu and the quality of the speakers. It's only the lackluster hard drive slowing it down, so an SSD is definitely on my to do list.
Do I need to mod the bios or anything to use Intel XTU? Does XTU also work for the GPU, or should I use MSI Afterburner for underclocking the GPU? I like the SLI performance, but don't need it at 100%, so if I can keep it cooler while sacrificing a few FPS, then all the better -
-
Yeah, I'm not worried about the iGPU. I'm going to keep it on SLI all the time, and just used MSI Afterburner to lower the max speeds for the Nvidia cards. Do I need to adjust the thermal limits on the CPU, or will the undervolt/turbo ratio be enough to lower the temps?
-
The only point of lowering TDP is to be able to fit into a smaller power adapter and optionally to save some battery life.
-
Ok so I talked to a lenovo employee last week and he assured me that a y510p with SLI 755m is coming (even the official lenovo site claims: "Up to NVIDIA® GeForce® GT755M or dual NVIDIA® GeForce® GT755M via Ultrabay" ). Also, if you go to the following link: Headsets, Speakers & Graphics Cards | Lenovo | (US) you can see that the gt755m5 is appearing in the outlet store, but clicking on the product itself appears to just bring you back to the main page.
Has anyone else talked to lenovo? Do we think we are close to a y510p model with 2 gt755m in SLI? I am trying to get the laptop before Christmas, so I wonder how long I should wait before pulling the trigger. -
-
/Why is it that when I plug in HDMI to my TV, it gets cut off a bit, almost as if it zoomed in a little bit?

Ok Guys/Gals, I am lost. I got my new GT750m5, removed the DVD, added the new card and nothing. I tried reinstalling the Nvidia drivers and nothing. IT doesn't even show up in the device manager. I even have the new 170w power adapter plugged in and the power management set to performance. Any ideas?
-
Boot a linux live key and run "lspci" as root, tell me if the two cards appear. Are you running stock or modded bios?
If none of these work, report back, i might have a few extra ideas. -
Try uninstalling the Intel Video Driver and rebooting. I think this is the thing causing the problems of the SLI card not showing up.
-
ill try uninstalling the intel driver and get back to you.
-
uninstalling the intel driver caused a bunch of problems, I can't even repair in the nvidia driver now, I get an error and it says I need a intel display driver installed first.
-
-
uninstalled both drivers (with reboots), ran Ccleaner, tried to install the lenovo Nvidia driver (311.x) and I get an error saying I need to install Intel driver first. Going to try newest driver from Nvidia next.
-
If you are on the latter, you might need to flash a vbios to get the sli bay to work, because of Windows 8.1:

(this link is for 750) -
Same problem with 331.65, throws me an error and says I need an intel driver installed first. ?
-
-
Still on Win 8. Will give it a shot.
-
Tried the bios update and it throws an errors saying no nvidia adapter detected (Even though there is one listed in the device manager and the drivers are installed).
-
-
Only the original one shows up, not the second one. It shows Intel 4600 and Nvidia 750 but no third card.
-
Stock or modded bios? -
Ouch.
Finally ran a game, and my 2nd GPU is quite hot. I haven't changed anything yet (undervolt, etc), and GPU 1 is showing 74C, GPU 2 is 95C, and CPU is 74C.
This was running Trackmania Nations Forever.
Also, I can confirm that this model (no SSD) does NOT have the required M.2 slot for a future SSD upgradeiutzi likes this. -
This sound like me, no sign of second card in GPUz and it shows SLI as disabled. I think my card is DOA.

Stock bios -
It is normal for the ultrabay graphics card not to be shown in Device Manager. To see if both graphic cards are working normally, follow the next steps:
1. Press Start and type dxdiag in the search bar.
2. Go to Display tab, and under Approx. Total Memory, there should be 4000 MB if both graphic cards are working.
If customer takes out the ultrabay one, then only 2000 MB will be visible.
Hope this helps,
Cheers!!
Go to the Nvidia control panel, into the physx config area, do you see any options for SLI? -
Read further down, mine shows only the Intel card in Dxdiag and the amount of ram doesn't change either.
-
I got one more suggestion for you, not for the faint of heart, and it will require the modded BIOS, i am not responsible for damage caused:
Off to bed for me. 11pm and i have classes at 8am tomorrow + gotta wake up at 6 -
Not sure I want to start moding my bios when I don't know for sure if the card is actually working.
-
Hmmm mine only shows the iGPU too in dxdiag. Our 750m is working...right?

Hi everyone, after a long research, I am still undecided if I am going to purchase a Lenovo y510p. I have a list of unanswered things that is preventing me from buying this laptop.
1. Can it play the Company of Heroes 2??
Notes: *notebookcheck. com said it will run in 27.1 fps but I am not really sure if this is enough.
*I really like to play this game
2. Is the wifi card of this laptop is really that bad??
3. No turbo boost in the cpu
4. The upcoming touchscreen version in this site Buy Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p Laptop - Microsoft Store
I hope you can answer these concerns and help me decide in buying this computer. I thank you all in advance.. -
1) Yes, definitely if you have SLI. If not, you may just have to dial the settings down a notch
2) I haven't had any problems so far, but many people have.
3) The CPU has a turbo boost (2.4 to 3.2 ghz)
4) That's your call if you want to wait for it
Jobine, etc:
So, in regards to my high GPU 2 temp, is that an indication I need to repaste it? I didn't really want to have to, but it's very odd that it runs 20C hotter than the other GPU. And if I do repaste, which paste should I use? There are a number of options at my local computer store. Can you point me to a good guide to repasting? I've never done it before. -
"Q: Does CoH 2 Support SLI/Crossfire?
A: Crossfire and SLI owners are fully supported to run Company of Heroes 2 with the latest drivers and application profiles. Conflicts with how our ColdTech works and how multi-gpu solutions operate introduce an overhead that exceeds the benefit of using the additional GPUs. After consulting with chipset designers we made the decision to have them disable support for multiple GPUs."
The games does work well with my system as long as I don't try to turn all the setting to max. I mix of high and medium w/o AA seems to work best.
Cheers, -
I want to buy a y510p, but the models I'm looking at from Lenovo.com have an "Estimated Shipping Date = 4 or more weeks".
Has anyone bought a y510p from another site? -
Cheers, -
They have a fantastic return / support policy, and they have inventory in-stock and ready for immediate shipment.
If you have an Amazon prime subscription, you can pay an extra $3.99 and get next-day shipping. You could order your laptop now, and have it in-hand by tomorrow evening. -
So I've read up on some guides, and picked up some Arctic Cooling MX-2 paste. Going to try repasting tonight. I sure hope it makes a difference

I just have a question about warranty.
Normally when you buy directly from the manufacturer you can buy a 2 or 3 year extended warranty. Can you still buy an extended warranty from Lenovo even if you don't buy the machine directly from them? Or does Amazon offer some kind of warranty program? -
These are the options offered on my system purchased in May 2013.
The first is to upgrade my remaining first year from depot to In-home. The last 2 would be the cost if I wait until the first year is up.

Hello, I'm having a hard time ordering my laptop. Placed my order on Monday and got CANCELED because my shipping adress is a Freight Forwarder (I live at Honduras, Central America) and looks like Lenovo polices now are to not send to those adresses (-__-) I had a very good deal with Sales Rep: $ 1,122.43 After Taxes for the maxed specs Y510p. That same one cost $1,299.99 + $10.49 on Amazon.
Amazon.com: Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p Laptop Computer - 59390951 - Dusk Black - 4th Generation Intel Core i7-4700MQ / 16GB RAM / Full HD 1080p 1920 x 1080 / 1TB HDD + 24GB SSD / Dual SLI NVidia GT750M 2GB / Bluetooth / Cam: Electronics
Amazon.com: Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p 59385820 15.6-Inch Laptop (Dusk Black): Electronics
Between those 2 deals, I wonder if the 8GB Hybrid SSD makes much difference vs the 24GB SSD one, I really wont get the slot for a bigger SSD if I go for the hybrid 8GB one? Its $200 difference between thos two models and that is the only difference. The second one wont have any disk upgrade capabilities? -
I just hope I will still able to work it out on the settings. As far as I know it is the only game that has
a problem with the y510p. Anyway if anyone of you have at least try to play this game and manage to
work it all out just let me know please. -
Well, I think my pasting job could've been a little cleaner, and I may go back at some point and redo it, but for now, the 2nd GPU is running 10C cooler than it was before (leveling out around 84C). Lenovo had put a big gob of paste on there, which was probably the issue
-
Hey guys please, any advice? I have a to choose between two same specs Y510p, but one have the 24GB SSD and the other the 8GB hybrid HD + SSD. 2nd one is $200 cheaper (a lot). Is it really worth? The hybrid disk one can be upgraded with a larger SSD later? I have to decide tomorrow :S
What are the real differences between those two? -

got my y510p today
any tips on preserving battery life / what programs to get? -
Thanks for all your help guys, I just have a few more questions
1. If I buy the y510p with SLI, is it possible to disable the gpu card in the Ultrabay so I can play games in single-gpu-card mode? (I've read that Windows 8.1 is causing problems with SLI).
2. With the gpu card in the ultrabay, does it pump out hot air on the right side (where I would keep my hand when I use the mouse)? -
2. Yes.Both GPUs do pump out hot air. If you have a mouse, you can always place your laptop a little further from you, this will not only prevent the air from annoying you, but will also reduce the eyestrain. -
Hmm, ok. But suppose for whatever reason I don't like the hot air near my mouse hand, would I be able to disable the gpu in the ultrabay and still play in single card mode?
Also, I can pull out the gpu card in the ultrabay and put in another hard drive for storage right?
Thanks.
