I'm having a wake-up issue from sleep with Windows 8. Seems like a common problem narrowed down to Nvidia drivers. The fans will spin up, keyboard light comes on, but the screen remains off/or it will wakeup and then freeze. Can someone chime in with their Nvidia driver version that is NOT having this issue? I have tried a few different drivers and all present the same issue.

Got the M2 128GB SSD and cloned the original 1TB boot drive to it and it boots with no issues. Looks like a viable $99 option for folks who want a SSD boot option without sacrificing the 1TB drive that's included.

    Cheers,

    Hey guys!

I found this a while ago, 8GB/FHD/SLI model for 1249$. But what suprises me is that this model comes with a touchscreen!

Buy Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p Touchscreen Laptop - Microsoft Store

Not just that, but any laptop bought from the Microsoft Store comes free of bloatware when purchased. Upgradeable warranties and in-store service (assuming you have a MS store in your region) seem also like a plus.

    Comments?

I saw that yesterday. I wonder if it has the empty M2 SSD slot available. I would hate to pay $200+ extra for a touch screen and find out the SSD slot isn't on board.

MyDigitalSSD 128GB Super Cache 2 42mm SATA III 6G M.2 NGFF SSD | FNet HybriDisk Software | My Digital Discount

With the computer upside down and the battery facing you the M2 slot is in the upper left corner..

I was looking around for Y510p information as I am planning to pick up the SLI model soon (either today or tomorrow) and I found this thread, so I had to sign up.

I have been reading the last 10 pages or so and there's a lot of great info, I was wondering if anyone had a quick rundown of steps they would recommend I take when I get my Y510p, I don't need step-by-step guides as I do know my way around computers, just looking for specific recommendations to improve performance etc.

Hardware wise I will be looking into upgrading the SSD in the near future but not quite just yet, and from what I have seen about the temperatures of this system I will definitely be picking up a cooling pad with the laptop.

I've also been looking into ThrottleStop and the undervolting procedure, any other things I should look into?

Undervolt + lowered TDP + lowered both base clock and turbo multipliers. Running at 2.2/3.2ghz, -90mV core, -60mV cache, 32/31/30/29x multipliers, 37W TDP/48W TDP Short

Just make sure you get a model that comes with the 24GB SSD. That way you'll have the option to upgrade to a $99 128GB SSD in the m2 slot.

Hmm, look what i found in the modded bios, i wonder what it does? Maybe it allows us to use the iGP even when the ultrbay GPU is present:

Worse that could probably happen is the display not showing up, if that happens, power on the bios, and use the screenshots provided to "blindly" navigate your way back to the settings and set them back to how they were, then F10+enter to save and exit.

Can you at least navigate through your modded bios and tell me if yours is enabled or disabled by default when the card is plugged in? I'm curious.

When I messed with the video settings like that one it caused no video to display through the panel but it would still be able to boot to BIOS.

    When in the modded BIOS:
Power on and mash F2 until you feel it reaches BIOS setup (you could also use the OKR button on the side to get to BIOS setup)
    Press right 8 times
    Press down 4 times
    Press enter 4 times

The BIOS will restore default values so you can use it again.

Wouldn't this be a much easier way to accomplish the same thing?

    Press F2 to enter BIOS
Pres F9 to restore default values
    Press Enter to confirm
Press F10 to save and exit
    Press Enter to confirm

Also, I should still be able to go back to stock BIOS once I'm done messing with the modded one right?

LOL. I was the one who posted the link initially from the Lenovo forum website that linked to the MS Store posting. You then said in reply to my post that it wasn't worth it to pay an extra 200 bucks for the touch screen. So are you saying it's a good deal now? I'm still trying to decide whether to refund my current one (and get dinged for the 15% restocking fee)....

Yes, I did receive the model with the 24GB SSD. I got a pretty good deal on it from Lenovo and so I'm hesitant to refund it because I don't know if I'll be able to get one with the same spec + touch screen at the same or only a slightly higher price. The $1299 price is a no go for me, even with a touch screen (and especially when it only has the 8gb SSD). I wonder if they'll have two different lines of y510p's, one with touch screen and one without touch screen. Otherwise, the price of the y510p's will probably go up slightly with the addition of the touch screen.

yup. it was set to automatic.

Sweet, did what you recommended. Running much cooler now methinks. Thanks so much.

Anything else I should tinker with? My SSD still has mcafee in applications and nothing else after couple months even though I uninstalled it at the start. I was told that it would auto move it, but there seems to be nothing else in there aside from mcafee and drivers.

Btw, am I right to assume that a cooling fan won't actually change REPORTED temperature in hwmonitor and XTU, but will actually make it slightly cooler? I feel like those programs only report the temperature it should be at based on what's going on inside the laptop.

edit: "Undervolt + lowered TDP + lowered both base clock and turbo multipliers. Running at 2.2/3.2ghz, -90mV core, -60mV cache, 32/31/30/29x multipliers, 37W TDP/48W TDP Short"

TDP? Should I adjust this as well? If what I'm reading on wiki is right..thermal design power is the maximum watts the computer can handle. So if it's 40 watts, if the laptop for some reason uses 41 watts, it shuts down. I don't understand the point of adjusting this. If I lower it, it'll just shut down earlier? Is that just to be safe?

The ssd is hidden and you can't see it in windows explorer. McAfee and the drivers are on a partition of the 1tb hard drive.

Cooling pad might be useful, but I doubt it because the laptops sucks air from the bottom and out of the side.

Not 100% sure about the changing TDP stuff, but undervolting should be done on all laptops IMO to reduce heat and save battery.

I currently have the Lenovo ideapad Y470 with GT 550M and core i5 processor which i got August 2011, the machine has served me well and currently does in my favorite games like NBA 2k14, deadspace 3, far cry 3, tomb raider , resident evil 6, battlefield 3, etc.. I play most of my games with medium to high settings with 40fps+ except for (Arkham origins, which I have 40+ fps with low settings and Battlefield 4 which is unplayable with medium settings but Battlefield 3 was, with 40fps+).

I can see in the foreseeable future (early next year or the next-gen games thanks to future consoles) that my laptop will not handle newer games in the future like titan fall and watchdogs at all. My question is should i get the ideapad Y510p with dual GPUs and i7 or wait for future models of the Ideapad Y models. I was leaning towards the GTX 770m ( the gpu is a beast) laptop like the sagers but the computers have horrible speakers and bad build quality compared to ideapads from what I have read in other forums. My current machine has amazing speakers and bass when I pay music in my room or the living room. My current machine idles around 40 degrees and the GPU max temp is 70 degrees when I am playing games like the latest batman arkham origins and NBA 2k14.

I am currently have the lenovo in home warranty, which is the best warranty service I have ever payed for. They recently came to my house to replace my fan and repast my cpu and gpu because my cpu and gpu temps were hitting 90 degrees, two weeks ago; The max temp is 70 degrees now like it originally was. I can't see myself going to another manufacturer but I need to know the pros and cons of the Y510p with dual GPUs.

What is the idle temp of the Y510p with dual GPUS machine? Do you have the ability to control the fan (my current model can)? What is the max temp? How does the machine handle Crysis 3, witcher 2 (one demanding game), COD Ghost and battlefield 4 and what are your settings? What is the battery life while surfing the web and watching youtube videos? What are your pros and cons and please be specific?

P.S. Sorry for the long wall of text but I have been prepping to ask this question for a year now. Hope you guys can help and thanks for any responses to the post

I'd personally wait a few months for the Y520 or Y520p, because Maxwell (Nvidia 8xx) is looking very promising, and there is a great possibility that the Y series will incorporate the 3K display currently found in the W540 and MSI GT60. Broadwell CPU is also welcomed, though it will probably be just a 5% boost in CPU performance, knowing Intel. However it will include Iris 6000 :) for some decent gaming while on the battery.

Your Y570 should be fine for a few more months, just play on lower settings.

Hey guys one more question to help me understand.

What exactly am I doing when I'm lowering my multipliers "1 active core, 2 active cores" etc.

Originally set to 34x, I was advised to move it to 32x (for just 1 active core).

But undervolting is something almost everyone should do cause there's excess power going through just to be safe. What exactly am I doing by lowering the turbo of my CPU (i think that's what I'm doing).

If it's running at 2.89 ghz instead of 3.15 ghz, what does that mean. Is my computer slower?

Also, new tests I conducted, or just watched more carefully.

    At -115mV
-80 for both CPU cache and iGPU
    32x31x30x29x....

...my processor was at 2.89ghz for 1 minute of stress test, then after moved down to 2.39ghz for rest of stress test (5 minute long one, i will do longer ones later -.- )

Is this the throttling you were talking about? You were saying at stock voltages this would happen, but even undervolting at -115, I still drop down. Keep playing around with it?

I can keep playing around with it, but what Ghz am I ideally looking for? And btw, do all these undervolting and lowering turbos only affect temperature at 100% load? Or will I be seeing lower temps across the board in all scenarios.

Lowering the multiplier lowers the clock speed of the CPU which in turn makes it slower.
Undervolting is just lowering the power to the CPU, since not all CPUs are created equal some require more voltage, and some require less. Since Lenovo can't test every single laptop and give it a "perfect" voltage, they give more than enough to power the CPU, which is why you should undervolt.

I need help with something on this laptop. Whenever I use my external display, whether thats my monitor or my 56" tv, it won't display at anything more then 720p. How would I fix this? I've used duplicate and extended display and the Windows screen resolution settings says that the external is at 1080p but I know it's not displaying at 1080. Should I try shutting off my laptop display and see if that works, or did Lenovo somehow lock down the resolution to match the laptops display?

When you extend, you need to change the resolution of the secondary monitor usually.
I've been doing it fine on multiple displays so its definitely a setting/TV problem and not a laptop problem :p.

It'll go down when you unplug it, or if it really bothers you these a option buried somewhere in windows power settings I think.

The multipliers for 1 active core, 2 active... is just how fast you set your CPU to turbo when 1 core or 2 cores is active (etc).

2.89 is slower than 3.15 by a very small amount

You CPU is dropping to 2.39 because it is getting to hot and it cannot maintain it's 2.9 turbo for very long (that is the problem with this laptop). At -118mV mine is able to run at 2.9 for a least an hour so yours is either overheating or it is just the luck of the draw, sorry.

Hello guys, like 1 hour ago I just sold my Y500 and now I'am ready to buy my new Y510p, I want 1080p, SLI, 16GB RAM and 24GB SSD. Right now that settup is for $1,199.00 at Lenovo site (and I think they can give $50 student discount if i talk with a Rep). So should I wait for this?

Black Friday Online Deals for Laptops, Tablets & PCs - Free Shipping | Lenovo | (US)

Or just buy it now? Because last year Black Friday prices were just the same prices as everyday and they just changed the usual coupon name to BLACKFRIDAYDEALS or something as always. I would like to get my laptop as soon as posible.

BTW, I remember pople talked about Barned and Nobles discount, but I couldnt find it or dont know where I need to go to get that discount. Help please.

    Thanks in advance.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I feel like I need to put some information out there for anyone still thinking of buying the Lenovo Y510.

I've had this laptop for about two months now. I use it on and off with my wife being the primary user, my maid laptop is an Asus UX32vd. After two months of owndership I will never buy another lenovo product again in my life.

While I am impressed with the speed and power of the laptop itself there are several niggling little issues that have been driving me insane. I'll start with a couple of pieces of common knowledge, the fact that Lenovo swapped out the MSATA connector for an M.2 connector and did not label that on the spec sheet is disgraceful, also if I had known about the low quality of the wireless card that the laptop comes with and the presence of the lenovo "white list" that stops you from easily upgrading the laptop I probably would not have bought it.

On a personal note my own observations of the laptop include an exteremly under powered wirless card that can not make use of a 5G wifi (a crime in this day and age). Additionally the quality of the laptop is shameful. In the few months I have had it the USB ports will suddenly stop working for no reason. I will have a wireless mouse plugged in and suddenly it will stop working for day on end, the mouse will work in any other computer but not the Lenovo. When that happens all of the USB ports seem to stop working and nothing seems to make them work again. After a day or two they will start working again. Lastly the touchpad is of extremely poor quality, when I try to right click it feels like the pad is going to snap off and it depresses a good 8-10mm into the chasis before I get a right click. While the palm rejection is commendable the ability to use multi-touch features is totally hit or miss. When I try a two finger scroll I sometimes get a scroll but more often then not the cursor moves around instead.

The keyborad layout is ridiculoouse and typing is rather difficult on the cramped layout with several keys (enter, backslash, right shift and left shift) being in sub-optimal positions, to me it looks like they took a Chinese keyboard layout and just slapped english letters on top, When I compare the layout to my smaller Asus the asus is much better. I also compared the layout to an HP that my friend purchased in South Korea and the keyboards are very similar.

If I could make the decision again I would not have bought this laptop.

P.S. my mouse just stopped working halfway through this post.

So I was wondering why my FPS wasn't as good as I thought it should be while playing the test range in BF4. (I would be playing multiplayer if it was working)

Turns out my SLI was disabled in the nvidia control panel so I went ahead and enabled it.

Now im getting 55-65 fps on High through HDMI to my 39 inch led 1080p 60hz tv.

Getting about 45-55 fps on ultra through the tv aswell.

Resolution has to be 1680 by 1050 on the tv in order for everything to fit well.

    I'm happy with it

Just bought a Y510P at a local Canada Computers (in stock!). It's model 59375625 and was on sale for $1024. It didn't come with the SSD, but I won't know until I open it, whether it has an empty slot or not. If not, I'll just eventually upgrade to a full SSD in place of the HDD. I was going to go with the Y410P with single GT755M and DVD, but shipping estimate was a month, and the Y510P was $165 more, for a FHD screen and sli GT750M. I also got just the standard 8GB ram and 1TB HDD. Just some quick questions:

    1) What are some of the first things I should do with the system? Remove bloatware, remove ProSet, check video/sli settings. Anything else?
    2) Is it possible to create a bootable ISO from the files on the recovery partition, or is the only way to upgrade the HDD in the future is to clone the drive?
    3) How can you tell if you have the Matte or "anti-glare" glossy screen? When I look at the screen turned off, I see a shadow reflection (but not mirror reflection). Will it say in the system somewhere?
    4) Is it recommended to undervolt the CPU and/or GPU to get it to run cooler?
    5) Can I run the laptop with the lid closed? I normally game on my 46" HDTV, and have external keyboard and mouse. This system is replacing my desktop. I don't want it to overheat or damage the screen with the lid closed.

As I get the system up and running, I hope you don't mind me asking more questions :)

    4) Yes. Use intel Extreme Tuning utility (XTU) and generally the sweet spot is around -80/-90 mV, however results may vary, CPUs are like cookies, not all are baked the same.

    5) Yes. Just play with the Windows power settings, set the "lid closed" on AC power to "do nothing", it will shut off the screen but not the computer, you can also hit Fn+F2 to turn off the screen at any given moment.

The main differences between Y510p and Y410p are the FHD display and extra pound of weight.
