Hey guys, I'm am getting the y510p delivered to my house tomorrow. Specifics I'm getting the 16gb ram, gt 750m sli, hd+ssd combo version.

I need a couple quick pointers from you fellers.

    1) when I get it should I do a clean install, and if so is there any good step by step tutorial for this specific model? For example do I install windows 8 Into the ssd? If not what should I be doing with the ssd?

    2) if I do a clean install should I manually download all the drivers back or the software I need. I do hate bloat ware but sometimes some are actually useful.

    3) does this take advantage of Optimus, like is this using the hd4600 when not gaming?

    4) graphics wise which drivers should I be in? I think that's a good start. Now I'm gonna read this entire thread lol from this page backwards.

I have another pretty dumb questions, so when I get the stock y 510p is windows 8 installed on the hdd or ssd. And how exactly do I setup ssd caching? And what do some people mean by erasing your ssd but not format It?

I will try again. As it happened to end up last on page 195.

Anyone have any suggestion for a docking station the Lenovo y510p ?

Also I noticed yesterday that it took quit a long time to boot up again after sleep mode.
    Anyone else experience that?

Interesting. I've been thinking of building my own blu-ray ultrabay. If you look at the hardware maintenance manual, the blu-ray ultrabay has 3 parts, 1) QIQY6 Module Frame For ODD (Y510p) (Part 90201990); 2) UJ262 9.5mm BD Rambo (Part 25209259), and 3) QIQY6 ODD Bezel BD (Part 90202344). The UJ262 is a Panasonic drive that is fairly common. The bezel parts can be purchased from Lenovo's parts website, though right now, they are out of stock...The same bezels can probably be used with that 3rd party hdd caddy for putting in a removable hard drive.

FYI, the bezel parts are the same ones for the Y500...

Guess i'll wait for a bit to see if the ultrabay's come out. Otherwise, I'll see if I can track down these bezel parts....

    1. I don't recommend doing a clean install, unless you are downgrading to Windows 7, because the laptop does not come with any recovery media. I just recommend removing the bloatware off the stock install, that's what i did.

    2. Yeah, you would have to download all drivers again. You can get them here: Drivers and software - IdeaPad Y510p Notebook

    3. To take advantage of optimus, you need to have one 750M, so you will need to remove your SLI ultrabay, because SLI and Optimus are not compatible, and inserting a second 750M will disable the 4600HD.

    4. Either Stock, Beta or WHQL, experiment with each and determine the best. If you are running single 750M, i recommend WHQL.

    5. Stock Windows 8 is installed on the HDD. The SSD is used for caching and is already set up by default. You will only need to reinstall the SSD caching software if you do a clean install.

Alright, it may have been me being an impatient idiot, but I ended up buying just the SLI model which will ship Friday and get here early next week. I don't have an optical drive in my current laptop so it's not like I'll "miss" it. I'm trying to move towards digital distribution for movies anyway. I also can't remember the last time I used my laptop away from power so battery life isn't an issue.

Can anyone recommend a lap desk for the laptop? I'd go with a cooling pad if you think it's necessary, but I'd rather have just a plain surface to hold the laptop.

    3. By removing it you mean just taking it out manually right? Can't you just disable and run Optimus? If I go taking it out route that means I have to physically remove the second graphics card, is it temporary and would it cause any problems?

    5. So if I don't do a clean install I don't touch the ssd caching software I think that was posted here before I can't recall what it's called though. Also in general with the ssd, aside from caching what other purpose should I use it for. For example I'm going to use this comp for gaming, generally use and some marketing creative software

Snagged one off the Outlet today, but it's got the 1366 X 768 screen so I'd like to swap that out ASAP.

Any suggestions as to what 1600 x 900 or 1920 X 1080 panel might work best (I've got a t530 currently with a 1600x900, might see if that'd do the trick)

I know that the 1080p 95% gamut panel used in the T530 is compatible with the Y510p, so i recommend buying that one, it retails for about 165$ and is just about the best panel you can get for this laptop. Give XoticPC a call and see if you can order the part from them. Note that installing an aftermarket panel will void your warranty.

Looked up a couple panels for you that should work.
    1600x900, matte, 15.6": AUO B156RW01 V.3
    1600x900, glossy, 15.6": AUO B156RW01 V.0
1920x1080, matte 15.6": LG Display LP156WF1-TLB2 (this is used by Lenovo officially)
1920x1080, glossy 15.6": LG Display LP156WF1-TLC1 (this is used by Lenovo officially)
    1920x1080, matte, 15.6": high color gamut: AUO B156HW01 V.4
    1920x1080, glossy, 15.6": high color gamut: AUO B156HW01 V.7

I would personally go for the matte high color gamut option.

Yeah. that was driving me nuts for the first few weeks that I had it. The solution is to uninstall the Intel Proset software. It isn't compatible with Windows 8. I did that two weeks ago, and I have not had a single drop since. Just to be clear, there is also a Bluetooth Intel Proset, but you don't need to delete that.

While I am answering a question, I might as well ask one. Is there a way to stop the touchpad from turning on every time the computer wakes up?

what the difference between synaptic and elan, should i be using one over the other?

also the system cooling policy question? when i game im assuming i should put it in high performance mode but under the setting should the system cooling policy be under active or passive?

passive slow the speed down of your cpu over increasing fan speed, while active increases fan speed then slows speed down. what the option to go when gaming

You need to Uninstall the WiFi proset (found in the Control Panel Uninstall Programs section) and then you need to open the Device Manager, and find your card, hit Properties, then Driver, then uninstall the remaining driver. Then reboot twice and you should be using the stable 14.8 drivers.

Well, I received my y510p today. I like it so far. Despite being advertised as a glossy display it arrived matte. The monitor hardware ID is LG02D9. I was playing some Borderlands 2 and while the sides near the vents get hot the wrist rest stays fairly cool. The speakers are great for a laptop. The only real issues I have are that they keyboard backlighting is uneven (purely cosmetic, so meh) and the edge of the wrist rest is kind of sharp. A little bit of a curve would have been nice.

Honestly, i have no idea since i do not own dual cards. However, it would be nice to be able to do so, and perhaps assign the 2nd GPU to PhysX when SLI is disabled.

To use Optimus you need to actually shut down your laptop, then take the card out of the Ultrabay slot. Disabling one using the NVIDIA control panel will not enable Optimus, and taking out a card will not cause any issues and is temporary.

Has anyone just tried to buy the 2nd GPU from someone who has one? If you can't get one from Lenovo, surely there are folks who have the SLI version that would prefer a DVD or Bluray drive or perhaps an additional HDD.

    Cheers,

I found that simply removing the proset software, as you describe, fixed the problem completely. I didn't play with the actual driver at all.

Well, you could always buy a GN36 (650M) and use Anatolymik's DifferentSLI to get the cards to SLI. That's what i'm doing.

Alright, so I realized that SLI was actually disabled when I was playing earlier. Now that I enabled SLI, games are working more smoothly but I'm having some serious heat issues. My main card runs at ~80C which seems reasonable for a gaming laptop, but the SLI card is hitting 97C very quickly and staying there. That's not normal for this PC, is it?

Edit: I'm also getting some very bad flickering (flashing between black and the image) with Borderlands 2. I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my SLI card?

Edit2: Switching Borderlands 2 to "Fullscreen Windowed" fixed the flickering issue, but the SLI card is still hitting crazy temperatures.

You can repaste your SLI bay, Lenovo usually does a poor job at pasting anyways.

I'm not SLI owner, so to be perfectly honest i am not very knowledgeable about this. But yes, it will void your warranty.

Also, it is known that this laptop does run hot in SLI.

Repasting the Ultrabay GPU will not void your warranty, as long as you don't break something in the process due to obvious user error and Lenovo finds out about it. Thankfully, the Ultrabay is very easy to take apart. I made a thread with pictures when I repasted mine: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ide...-pictures-disassembled-y500-ultrabay-gpu.html

On the other hand, repasting the main GPU will void your warranty because there is a "warranty void if tampered" sticker covering one of the screws needed to get to the heatsinks.

There are no guarantees that repasting will fix your high Ultrabay temperature. But there is a very good chance it will because the large temperature delta between it and the main GPU is a telltale sign of a bad paste job. Many others have experienced the same thing and repasting is what fixed it for them. I've personally repasted everything and the Ultrabay, at most, runs 5C hotter than the main GPU in some games, mainly the GPU-bound ones. In most games, especially the CPU-bound ones, they're around the same temperature, or the main GPU is a little bit hotter.

SLI makes no difference on the temperatures of the main GPU and CPU. The Ultrabay is on the other side of the laptop and has its own cooling mechanism, and it doesn't affect the airflow to the rest of the laptop.

    Keep it on active.

Hope everyone is well with their y510p. I complained about wifi issues but I've been using my y510p for a while now and the wifi is working consistently. I actually have proset installed and I use it to control my wifi connection.

Edit: does anyone know if I can use WiDi with the y510P with SLI enabled? Or do I have to take out the ultrabay/second graphics card and enable intel HD graphics to use WiDi???

So i recently go my y510p, am having trouble with the wifi. Got it to connect day one, next day it wouldn't connect. I did a system restore which was probably over kill but I was thinking its only been one day not much to lose. Couldn't connect after the system restore. Uninstalled proset did the 2 restart thing to get back to 14.8 drivers still no connect any more ideas guys is there any router settings that are not compatible?

Edit: So restarting my router gets me a few minutes of internet could it be my router?

I have a special program called Aerofoil ( Aerofoil Free Download) that basically switches the laptop power plans when it is plugged in or not. So when i'm on battery, it puts my cpu on power-saver (downclock to 800mhz) and when i'm plugged in, high-performance mode allows turbo to kick in at 3.3ghz :)

Disabling the SLI card does stop your computer from using it, but the hardware is still there. The integrated graphics (and thus optimus) will not be enabled until you actually remove the SLI card.

Proset is basically an alternative to the stock Windows network manager. It's really not necessary. It was a little more user friendly than the XP network manager but Microsoft cleaned that up in 7/8.

Something doesn't seem right with the GPUs' temperatures. I was playing Crysis 3 for around 3 hours, the temperature of one GPU is around 60C and the other one is 97C! I assume that the one with the higher temp. is the one in the ultrabay since the temp. of the CPU (~65C) was closer to the other one, so I'm thinking of repasting it, any advice on how to do so and is my assumption correct?
