I guess I'll be returning my laptop in the next week or so. Just out of curiousity, does anyone know if I will get similar performance or better with the
MSI GE60 2OE-003US? MSI GE60 2OE-003US - XOTIC PC - MSI Gaming Laptop. Obviously it has no SLI but a sales rep on the phone told me the NVIDIA® GeForce™ GTX 765M (2.0GB) GDDR5 PCI-Express DX11 w/ Optimus™ Technology will actually outperform the 750M SLI. Is this true?

No they let you customize the wifi card in any country. It's only in Canada where you can get 1080p+no SSD.

MSI GE60 is a bad laptop. It overheats worse than the Y510p and has similar battery life, even if it has optimus. You are better off getting a Clevo W350ST. But the GT 750M SLI = GTX 770M, so the 765M will be inferior.

Anyways, if you want to talk other laptops, go to the other boards.

Thanks. I wasn't going to derail the subject of the forums. Just wanted an opinion from the Y510P as I want to get a comparable laptop.

warning: the ideapad Y510p screen is extremely sensitive. I just damaged the screen and I had had the laptop for about 1 month. I am not casual at all. I think it got damaged while in an alienware bag i used to carry it around with. They said it was cracked inside and not from outside as there was no wear or tear visible from the outside. what they claim was that i put weight from the top cover and cracked the inside that way. it cost me $300 and will be waiting to get it back in a week. I am willing to sell mine for $1100 (that is a loss of 500) once i get it back (have only used it for 37 days or so). I have made that decision once i received the precision 6700 workstation that my job had had ordered and was delayed. originally that was why i went and purchased the ideapad. I don't think i will ever buy a lenovo again. this is not to poo poo lenovo but I never did expect the screen to be this sensitive. I did have other problems that frustrated me,- like when the battery was really low, it was almost impossible to resume from hibernation or sleep. Because of this, i had had to re-restore from previous points 2 times already within a span of 30 days.

I've seen a few SLI GT755M's. Like this guy on youtube:

Not sure if legit, however, but it's likely.

I've used the Y510p for a month or so now, so I thought I'd give my two cents.
I got the Y510p 59367273 which has 8gb of RAM and a single GPU.
The laptop has held up to anything I've thrown at it. The only benchmark I really have is around 45-60fps on Battlefield 3 on High settings.
I've run massive (6GB of RAM) photoshop projects just fine on the laptop as well.

    Common issues that I'll address:
Touchpad: I actually love the foamy feel of it, although I understand lots probably don't. The accuracy of the touchpad itself is not a problem at all.
Heat: So yes the laptop did reach 92C while playing BF3, but the moment that it got that hot the fans spun a little faster for about 6 seconds and got the temps back down to around 80C very quickly. As long as the vent isn't blocked the laptop stays relatively safe inside and the outside never gets uncomfortably hot (rarely even gets warm).
Screen: It's a matte screen but it's not quite as flat as some matte screens tend to be.
Battery life: The single GPU model has great battery life! With light usage (web browsing, microsoft word, light youtube) on 50% brightness with bluetooth off I tend to get around 5 hours of battery life. If I'm trying to save battery (20% brightness, airplane mode) I get 7-8 hours (although I'm extrapolating to get those numbers). Overall, I use it for university and have never been concerned about finding an outlet (I never carry my adapter anyway).
Wifi: I had the wifi drop out maybe once a day for a few minutes, but I uninstalled the Intel Proset (don't uninstall the bluetooth ProSet though, it needs that) and it's worked without problem since then.

Best surprise: The sound is much better than I expected. The built in speakers are quite loud and don't have much of that "laptop sound". They're good enough to enjoy listening to music if I can't plug into speakers. The headphone port is excellent quality. Destroys my Galaxy S3's or my iPod's audio output.

The keyboard is good, the screen is good. Backlight on the keyboard is awesome.

Tried to be unbiased. I may or may not check back here (depending on if I remember this post).
You won't regret the purchase. If you don't need the battery life get something with a 765m perhaps, other than that this is a pretty perfect laptop for the price.

Hello was reading through this thread, I ordered a Y510P a few weeks ago and my estimated ship date is for Oct 9th. Anyway, I'm a little worried about the WIFI card. I was trying to find out which one I should request for? I'd like to contact lenovo support ASAP regarding this so it would be great if someone knowledgeable would reply with which WIFI card is the best(trouble free).

Y series' are so rare in stores. You are better off ordering from Lenovo. But i found the 1050$ model (SLI/1080p/8GB) here at CanadaComputers:

Canada Computers | Notebooks, Netbooks & Tablets | Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p Pro Multimedia / Gaming Notebook 59375625| 15.6" Intel Core i7-4700MQ Haswell Shark Bay 8GB 1TB HDD| NVIDIA Dual SLI GT750M HDMI BT Win 8

According to CC's stock they have some in various stores. And yes, 150$ is well worth the SLI bay.

Lenovo finally launching the ultrabay GPUs for Y510p and Y500 by the name of GT755M5 and GT750M5.
Do a quick google "GT755M5 lenovo" and "888014847 lenovo" to find more.
The GPUs can be found on lenovo's website and images of the packaging can be found on some Chinese websites.

Is the y510p (1080p) display better than the y410p (900p) aside from the resolution/size/matte vs glossy?

Has this worked for anyone? I tried calling in actually (a few weeks ago, in Canada) and they said they only do additional customization, that isn't available online, for Thinkpads.

Yes. The Y510p has a contrast ratio of 680:1 while the Y410p has a contrast ratio of 300:1.

Assuming the screens are 1080p and 900p, respectively.

Maybe I should've gone with my original spur of the moment choice with the y510p then. At first I thought it was 14.2 inches wide then balked when I found out it was 15.2inches. Although come to think of it that is still manageable for me and I'd like the bigger screen size.

I actually had a 410p shipped to me but the display to me is rather lacking (partially due to comparing to the Acer v7 482pg). Overall the other aspects of the laptop is pretty good. If the y510p is essentially the same but bigger with a better display that may be the best choice for me. Although my y410p has the SSD and bluray drive but the y510p I go for will be more basic (due to how current pricing is).

The Acer v7 482pg is nice, given the smaller form factor as well, but both units I've tried have problematic backlight bleed issues. So they have a somewhat annoying flaw in dark movies and games. I need to make a decision if the 2nd one is "liveable," try my luck in another exchange, or just give up on this model.

On an amusing note my y410p was shipped to me with rather ridiculous packing. The outside box is maybe around ~6 times (or more) the volume of the actual inner box but the only packing material used was 2 wads of brown paper (probably was being thrown around inside there). I was extremely confused when the UPS guy showed up with such a large box.

The main advantages of the Y510p are the bigger battery (62W/h vs 48W/h for the Y410p), improved screen (680:1 contrast vs 300:1) and SLI graphics, but in return the Y510p is heavier (5.1 vs 6.4pounds), bigger, attracts more fingerprints and 50-100$ more expensive for the same configuration.

Just came across this on Lenovo's support forums. It "seems" to give some concrete information, but given how many promises different Lenovo rep's have made, I'll take it with a grain of salt.

This is what the Lenovo rep said:

"Thanks for sharing what you are finding out through your inquiries - I think this generally aligns with some internal discussions with our Idea Options product manager over the last 24-48 hours.

Today, the 0C22235 part is on the web. It is listed as the GN36, but has a confused description. We have limited stock of this part, and it is not the right part for the Y500. We are removing the "add to cart" button now, and are in process of removing it entirely from the web, but this will take 3 business days, so it should be gone before the end of next week.

The part you want is 0C65964 - This is the GT750M5 based card that should work with the Y500. We have stock of this part in the warehouse (in US) now, but it is not on Lenovo.com and not orderable at the moment. The team is working on getting it loaded and made available on the web with a correct description. This will probably also take 3+ business days, so I hope it will be available before end of next week. (I know you have been told "next week" many times already)

There is also 999016119 - This is the GT750M5P based card for the Y510p model system. This is not yet in stock but is on order (ETA is perhaps 6 weeks out) and will be put on the web once available. So, look for this in the future if you have a Y510p."

Well, there is one way to find out.

Any SLI Y510p please remove your ultrabay and look at what's written on it.

So, I think I want to pull the trigger on this but I'm torn between a couple options. From Lenovo I could get the 8GB RAM plus dual graphics option for $1129 after a discount from my employer. Xotic PC has the 16GB RAM plus dual graphics for the same price as Lenovo ($1249, though again if I went through Lenovo I would get an employer discount to $1199) but it also includes the Bluray ultrabay.

I don't know that I necessarily need the bluray, but I would like to have the option to run the laptop with a single graphics card (to enable optimus) when I need better battery life (watching Netflix or something). I assume the laptop doesn't come with a "blank" slot for the ultrabay to remove the SLI graphics but keep the laptop clean?

    My two real concerns are....

    - Has anyone purchased a Lenovo laptop from Xotic PC? I only ever hear of them being recommended for more niche brands (Sager, Gigabyte, etc...)
    - The model on Xotic PC supposedly comes with the matte display. That brings up two concerns... One, the glossy display has gotten some really good reviews on brightness and viewing angle. Is the matte display as good as the glossy? Two, I assume it's an earlier production unit if it includes the matte display... were there any initial production issues with the laptop?

Edit: One last question... I assume the 6lb weight on the Lenovo website is without the Ultrabay graphics... what does it weigh total with the second graphics card?

Edit2: I searched the thread a little more thoroughly and talked to someone at Xotic PC. It looks like they are out of stock and are waiting on more inventory. They said they may be getting the glossy model in instead of the matte model but they're not sure.

It looks like the Xotic PC deal is better, provided that the other spec's are the same (i.e. both have 1TB + SSD). The ultrabay's for the Y510p aren't available for sale right now, and so the more ultrabay's you get as your initial package, the better. In fact, my understanding is that the ultrabay's released for the Y500/Y400 were only DVD drives and so you would have to swap that drive with a blu-ray drive to get a blu-ray ultrabay.

Yeah... looks like Lenovo won't even have the Bluray model in stock for over a month. I think I'll go ahead and order from XoticPC and hope they get them in stock soon.

Any reason to go with the upgraded display on XoticPC? It would just be a gaming/multimedia PC for me, nothing professional.

If you aren't doing professional photoshop there is no reason to upgrade the display. If you have never bothered with gamut in the past, you probably won't benefit much from dumping 165$ on a professional screen. Put the money towards an SSD instead.

    1. Grammar please
    2. Do you mean the computer is becoming under load? This is often more of a software issue than a hardware issue, i think Windows Update could be running in the background. You might also wanna check if you have any viruses or self-updating programs.

Great, thanks. Frustrating that I finally pick a laptop and no one has it in stock in the configuration I want!

    Well, I'm looking at...

    - XoticPC model that has 16GB RAM, SLI and the Bluray ultrabay included
    - Lenovo model that has 8GB RAM, single graphics and the Bluray

I chatted with XoticPC and they said they do not have any of the laptops in stock and that they are waiting on their supplier to let them know when they will have more. And the Bluray model from Lenovo is backordered until November.

Edit: To clarify, XoticPC said that I would need to wait on any of the configs from their site, not just the Bluray + SLI model.

Funny you say that, because 2 weeks ago, the BD+SLI model was up for 1280$ on Amazon. Why not just grab the SLI 8GB 1050$ model from Xotic and buy an aftermarket USB3 ODD?

Well, my primary usage for the ODD would be watching movies in bed (though I'm buying mostly digital now, I have a lot of Bluray movies) which is rather difficult with an external drive.

My other concern is having something to swap into the Ultrabay when I don't want the second graphics card. If I'm not gaming (again, watching a movie, even on Netflix) I'd want the extra battery life afforded by optimus without getting the ultrabay full of dust.
