Whatever floats your boat

This looks like a great machine, with options not found on current models for the same price. I:m in Japan, and can find two versions: i7, 1TB drive, used with 45-day manufacturer warranty, $900; and i5, 750GB, new, $850. I:d like to know if people would recommend buying this machine, or should I get something completely current instead? Thanks for any advice!

Just make sure to get a 1080p screen. That should be a priority.sproutingrice likes this. -
In Notebookcheck y510p SLI review says that cpu and gpu temperatures too high. I saw their stress test and cpu and gpu temperatures r to high for me. I wanna buy this notebook for gaming performance but still thinking high temps. Is there a solution for this? I think a good notebook cooler like zalman nc 3000 can reduce this high temps about 10 celcious degrees because of y510p vents r very suitable for this.
Is there anyone using y510p SLI with a notebook cooler? I am curious about if we play battlefield 3 on ultra setting about 2 hours with cooler pad what about temperatures. Can someone help me? -
Hello fellow notebook enthusiasts.
I am planing on buying the Lenovo Y510P SLI version.
Lenovo Y510P 15,6" Full HD / i7-4700MQ / 16GB / 1TB + 24GB SSD / 2x GT755M 2GB SLI / Win 8 - Gaming - Bärbara datorer - WEBHALLEN.com
Are there any reasons not to?
I am thinking of SLI vs non SLI versions.
Are there any major issues with the computer making this a bad choice for me?
I have heard that some games have a hard time handling SLI. What would be the undesired effects?
Anyone know if the games listed below are working OK on it?
From my "What Notbook Should I Buy" thread: Can be read HERE!
What are the primary tasks you need this notebook for?
Web Surfing, Listening to Music, Photo Editing, Computer Programming, Video Chat and Conference, Movie Streaming and Viewing, Graphic Intense 3D Gaming
Lightroom, Photoshop.
What games will you be playing?
Wow, Skyrim, Xcom and hopefully GTA V.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M SLI - NotebookCheck.net Tech
In case you can't the game, check to see how the game performs on a GTX770M and it should equal that.
SLI versus non SLI:
Pros of SLI:
- More GPU performance (up to 80% more depending on the game), gives you basically a 770M.
Pros of non-SLI:
- More battery life (4:30 vs 2:30)
- Lighter weight (by 0.5lbs)
- Lower Price
- Runs much cooler
- DVD drive/HDD caddy
Major issues with computer:
- Poor out-of-the-box wifi drivers (easily fixed)
- Poor out-of-the-box trackpad drivers (easily fixed)
- Runs hot (usually laptops with specs like these are bigger and heavier with better cooling, Y510p is small for the specs it has), though is better without SLI
- The BIOS is locked in a way you can't just put in any wifi card you want, there is a whitelist
- No Msata slot (but there is the speedier M.2)
- Not an IPS display (not really a con, since it adds to the cost+TN panels are better for gaming)
- Poor battery life on SLI models -

Just read on another forum that windows 8.1 updates the MS wireless driver and you can no longer go back to 14.x for the wifi adapter. This is causing the dropped connection again.
-
I think I might buy a cooling pad because it feels like it runs way too hot when gaming.
-
Maybe intel will release 16.x and our problems will go away. I can only dream.
The files that handle the 14.8 drivers are:
C:\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\NETwNe64.sys and C:\Windows\system32\drivers\vwifibus.sys -
Isn't this 16.1.1? That's what it says on the download page but after you install it it says 15.10 something in Device Manager. Weird...
Anyway, I've never had disconnection problems on my 2230 with the latest drivers from Intel Download Center, it just has bad performance with random ping spikes and packet loss. I'd check the rest of your wireless network setup for any problems like interference or suboptimal router or WLAN settings before blaming it on the drivers. -
I'll test these drivers later tonight.
15.x was terrible, tried both 15.6 and 15.8 -
Hey guys, i got y510p recently and I realized that when I remove the charger, I can hear a very high pitched whining noise. Changing the brightness of the screen also causes this, the noise only goes away if it's at full brightness. I then asked for a replacement, got the replacement today and I have the same thing. Having it at less than full brightness causes a reallly really high pitched noise, is anyone else getting this? I bought mine from John Lewis in the UK..
-
Then, open the Intel HD graphics Control Panel, go to Power, then go to On battery, and then turn off Display Power Saving Technology.
Tell me your results. Note that i have never seen this problem before. -
Turning off the power saving technology does, however all this does is change the brightness am I correct?
If I keep turn it back on and move the slider to "Maximum Quality" the noise goes, but moving it to "Maximum Battery" brings it back.
Also to note: turning the brightness of the screen down completely makes the sound go away too!
Model Specs:
i7 4700MQ
1tb HDD (no SSD as far as I am aware)
gt 755m
glossy screen
EDIT 2:
When changing the refresh rate of the screen, the laptop momentarily switches off the display. When the display switches off the noise goes completely! -
Yeah, i have no idea. Set it to Maximum Quality then
Try updating/rolling back all your GPU drivers
Oh, and Open the Nvidia Control Panel, go to 3D settings, and toy around with the preferred graphics processor and tell me what happens when you switch GPUs. Maybe that 755m is acting iffy on you. -
Important thing is that the noise becomes a lot quieter when I plug in the charger
Changing the settings didn't alter anything with regards to the noise..I'm just going to keep it and wait for more people to get the y510p and post their experiences aha. -

Hi everyone, I've been following this thread for a while now and finally decided to add my own experience.
I purchased the 59370005 Y510P from the Lenovo website on 8/13/13. I received it roughly a week later -- I live in Southern California, for those who are wondering. My primary use for this laptop will be college work (Computer Science), with minor gaming/media consumption.
The screen on the unit I received was matte. I had been under the impression that the current shipments were all matte, so I would've been quite surprised had it been glossy. No speaker/wireless/overheating issues in my moderate use so far.
I replaced the 1GB HDD with a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD and had no problems. I used Samsung's included software to transfer the OS to the SSD. I then created a Custom Recovery Image ( Everything You Need to Know About Creating Custom Recovery Images for Windows 8) after removing the bloatware. I bought a standard HDD caddy and replaced the generic faceplate with the one from the DVD drive. NOTE: Be very careful when removing the faceplate -- there are three prongs holding it in place. Don't use excessive force. I followed this guide, Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p HDD Caddy, though I purchased my caddy from Amazon for much less.
Also, make sure to order your laptop via the Barnes and Noble Gold portal https://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/barnesnoblegold/StdAffinityPortal/en_US/Lenovo:EnterStdAffinity?affinity=barnesnoblegold to receive an additional discount. You'll have to create an account, but they won't ask for any specific information that you wouldn't otherwise have to give when making a purchase.
If there are any other non-specific questions you'd like to ask, feel free! I'll try to help as best I can! -

Is the 1920x1080 p non sli without the ssd going to be for sale again?
-
-
Some people get 755M some others get 750M.
Some people get matte some get glossy.
Some get M.2 connectors some don't. -
would like a 755m model as well, i want that 889 price back for no ssd -
899 for 1080p+SDD, GT750M. US prices. -

Is there any way to get those GT-755M models on Lenovo, Amazon, Newegg, XoticPC, Fry's, etc yet?
Also would this disk works?
http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digi...A-120G/dp/B00A1ZTZOG/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
If not, what is the keyword(s) I need to search when browsing for SSD options for this laptop? or wich word(s)to avoid?
What I want is a 128GB +/- SSD drive (good price if posible) to put the OS there and some games. The cache would done there too? (as it does on the 24 SSD drive options) Need to do a partition for that? -
Mine broke after two weeks of usage. 30 days in the repair depot fixed nothing. Refund request is taking forever to be approved. Y510p is good when it works though. I recommend this laptop to those who can do DIY repairs

Any new video drivers yet? There's microstutter on games like Black ops 1. It's disappointing. I expected to easily play on max settings, and I should be able to but it's unplayable even on the lowest settings.
-
Is there a refreshed version coming out? I keep reading about a possible refresh on these forums.
Also, what happened to all the ultrabay peripherals? If I got one, I'd be interested in the fan one so I could take out one of the cards when I need more battery, and put the fan in its place. -
Honestly, just try them, and rollback to stock/working drivers if they tend to induce too much microstutter. -
-
Oh, and about the 4 series thinkpad, I would be all about it, if it had a more powerful gpu in it.
Originally I was going to get a sager, but I think I want the sli version of the Y510p now. -
Hey everyone. I don't want to be such a n00b with this, but how would I go about overclocking my GT750m in my Y510p? I have the single card version, I'm just not sure of what I need to do to overclock it. Also, is it relatively safe to do this?
