Is there a better wifi driver? or do I need a brand new card? It's a little shotty sometimes. or maybe my wifi just sucks

New forum picture, was getting a bit tired of the old one -
Also, how many people have 510p's with matte screens? I have one, apparently they're quite rare

I personally have a 4702, and it can get very hot (mid 80c's), so I can only imagine that a 4700 roasts. Performance is great on it, and the matte screen is very good. Unfortunately, my bezel has been scratched by ridiculous things, like my finger or dust on a microfiber cloth. Since the machine is in my backpack a lot (college student), parts of the bezel have worn (it isn't scratched, almost looks like the gloss of the bezel has worn away) ever so slightly, from what I can only assume is a result of the bezel pressing against the palm rests when it's closed and pressure is on it.

For my Intel centrino wireless-N 2230, the driver version is 14.8.8.75. And there's no way to connect to WiFi. If I open up networks from the tray, to see what WiFi hotspots are available, it shows "no connections are available". And the icon in the tray has the little red x on it as well. In addition, it says "the audio service is not running" and has the speaker with the red x.
And even adding on to that, if I hold fn and try to adjust the brightness or volume by using the arrow keys, nothing happens! Help! -
As for the wifi, right click the Wifi icon in the taskbar and click "troubleshoot problems", chances are you accidentally disabled your wifi card. Glad you're running the proper drivers though.
Report back here when done. -
When I try to start the audio service I get the error "windows could not start the windows audio service on local computer. Error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start."
Looking at the services, a lot are disabled and I feel that this may be party of both these problems.
As for the Wi-Fi troubleshoot, "the diagnostics policy service is not running" So I started the service and then it couldn't find the problem, which I think lies in the services. -
Try enabling the Diagnostics policy service.
Doing a virus scan helps too. -
I opened up msconfig, and just enabled all the services. Restarted and wifi /audio are working now. Looks like I have to toy around with it if I want to turn a lot of these services off I don't need.

Glad things are fixed. How's the laptop working for ya? Any wifi problems now? -
Seem to be much better. My router is in my basement, and my room is on my top, 3rd floor. Before I was getting pretty shotty connection and sometimes couldn't get anything, now I have full connection almost all the time and great speeds. Thanks for your help!
Also just updated my graphics driver to 320.49. Not sure if this is good or bad. -
With sli you gain maybe 5% performance but the micro stutter issues will start to show in some games.
If you want the extra juice, OC your cards slightly using MSI afterburner. My recommendations are 39mhz clock and 100mhz memory, essentially giving dual GT755M's -

Hi all new member but wanted to put my two cents in on some of the questions going around for this laptop. I have the SLI and 24GB version and the only issue I have had is the wifi card so i just let windows use it own stuff and that fixed it. I hate how whitelist is in place as i have a AC router and wanted to replace the card with a AC one. As for the screens, it seems Europe gets a glossy TN and the US gets a matte TN (mine came from FRYS about a month ago and is matte). Has anyone seen a way to mod the bios that has been tested yet for wlan removal?

New user but been browsing here for months. I got the Y510 with Matte and 4700. I can answer a lot of newbie questions if anyone wants to ask. Feel like I haven't been contributing as much as I could. Thanks. I have a Lenovo Y510P, U310, Yoga 11, and U410. Been reading a lot of forums to address all the little issues with all my machines. Let me know if you need anything and I'll try my best to contribute. Thanks.
So here's the question for all you pro users, that I'm having a hard time finding: For the U310 and 410 the drivers come in a folder on the shipped hard drive. Not so (unless I'm totally missing it) on the Y510P. I want to install a clean Windows 8.1 from CD but need all the drivers in one place (I don't care about loosing one-key recovery as I know I will). But the drivers I need. Are they somewhere organized hidden on my Y510p stock drive, or if not, is there a place on the web where they are able to be downloaded (and I don't trust lenovo.com) at all. And also the order I should install them? -
Ordered from Lenovo.com in July and mine had one. Right after that, I saw many posts in here that there's came without Matte and then a could of months later the NFGG connecter wasn't even installed on the board. I feel lucky I got in a the right time. I'm so pissed at Lenovo for not just doing the right thing by others, but my Y510 is perfect. -
At least be creative when you double post.

I contact Lenovo for my issues and receive the replacement 1 week later. It runs pretty smooth now; I also remove most of the bloatware that came with it. Have anyone here tried to run a triple monitor with this laptop (2 external via HDMI and VGA + the laptop screen) ?

Wow, just got my Y510P and that Pokki software is ANNOYING. It was the first thing I removed, then the McAffee and few other things. I downgraded the wifi to version 14, reinstalled the intel video drivers/Nvidia drivers to enable Optimus and got everything else the way I like it. I am pretty satisfied so far but I have only been using it for a few hours.

Other than that, I'm pretty happy with this laptop. I've had little to no issues with the trackpad. I don't like the placement of it though, because sometimes when I'm typing my palm will hit it and the mouse will click elsewhere.
Battery life is meh. After a full charge, it says it's good for another 5 hours, but a hour or so later, it estimates 1hr 55min left with 57% remaining. Thankfully I'm usually around a charger. Other than those, I can't really complain for the price.
Also fingerprinting is bad. What's the best the best way to remove them? -
Hey guys. Potential buyer here with a few questions that I'm sure have been answered in this thread at some point, but I'm having trouble finding them. I'm hoping someone might take the time to answer me!
1. I understand that Optimus is not enabled by default. Apparently you CAN enable Optimus by removing the second GPU. I don't mind doing that when I need the added battery life. However, I can't seem to find any numbers on here as to what that battery life will be. Apparently the laptop gets 2.x hours stock, which isn't really that great, but is apparently the only real downfall of the device. What are the numbers IF you remove the second GPU and enable optimus? Is it negligible, or does it rise to 3-4+ hours? That would be acceptable to me.
2. I see arguments over SSD possibilities with this "M.2" drive. From what I understand, that bay is too small to accept the usual mSATA flash drives that one would normally install as the "primary" SSD. However, I also read that there will be drives to fit this form factor in the near future. Is this indeed the case?
3. Is this even the right laptop for me? I've never really owned larger laptops. I currently own an X120e - I've always been about small/portable/long lasting. I am interested in the other end of the spectrom this time around partially to try something different (not staring at a small screen) and partially because I would like to be able to play games like ARMA III at decent settings. I like the Lenovo as opposed to other 'gaming' laptop offerings from other manufacturers because it is not quite as bulky, and doesn't look ridiculous (I like minimalism, so looking at the offerings from Alienware, MSI, etc... all I see is something I would be embarassed to take out in public.) I know Lenovo has decent build quality (though I am also aware that this isn't a ThinkPad). The y510p seems to be a great laptop aside from the miserable (stock) battery life. Am I wrong? Is there anything else I should consider? I WAS looking at the MSI GS70 Stealth, as that is rather minimalist and also very thin, but it had several issues of its own. I was even considering a W series but it appears as though the W540 won't be released in time (I need a new laptop for a new job I am starting). I wouldn't even mind something as large as the W series, and I like the simple design of the W540, but other than the W540, the only other device that seems reasonable without looking like it was designed by a 5-year-old is the Dell Precision, and both of these become rather expensive when you option in the higher-end Quadro graphics, which is what I would need if I wanted to do gaming, since they aren't gaming cards.
Since price isn't really an object, I'm also seriously considering the current Razer Blade Pro. Might that be a better option for me? -
2. Msata drives do not fit in the Y510p. M.2 drives will be commercially available soon, but not now.
3. It's an affordable gaming/peformance laptop. 15.6'' screen and 6 pounds. I have personally been using a 7 pound 15.2'' Dell 1525 for the last 5 years, so the Y410p was actually proven to be smaller. The reason the Y510p has terrible stock battery life is because of SLI, nuff said. However, the Y410P's and Single-GPU Y510p's have 3-5 hours of battery life. If the price is not an object for you, there are much better laptops than the Y510p. For around 1800$ you can get something with a GT780M, though it will be an 8 pound monster with generous cooling. Razer blade is 1800$, but actually performs slower in most games than the Y510p and runs a little hotter too, but the portable form factor is a pro. W540 might be good at gaming, but bottom line it is a workstation, and the GPU is designed for CAD, not video games. I have very little knowledge about the GS70 stealth.

I am actually lucky, I recently got a full CD key for office 12 pro and all I had to do was put the CD key into the trail that comes with this and it activated no problem, lol.
I had a quick question about the bottom and the bios. Do I use the lenovo key to enter the bios? Also on the bottom there is obviously a panel that comes off. I tried removing the battery to gain access to that little switch and unlocked that and then I pushed the release switch on the panel but I cannot figure out how to remove it, am I missing something?
Thanks -
2. To open it up, watch this video:

Be careful when removing the back panel, or you might break a peg (happened to me because i was careless). Be sure to remove the Ultrabay, the Battery and all the screws before you do. -
Oh, so that panel doesn't just pop off, ok. I'll watch the video, thanks.

I realize I could spend more money and get a "better" laptop, and it's funny because I have that option. My problem is that it seems that the only thing you get for more money from this point forward is more power, but at the expense of a larger, heavier device. Typically you can pay a LOT more, and get the thinness you want, but I don't think there is anything at this point because stuff just gets too hot. I'd love to spend 3-4 grand on something as powerful as the Alienware 18, but I also don't want to carry around a briefcase, nor do I want to look like an idiot with a computer that glows colors out of every orifice.
So as I see it, it appears as though the y510p seems to be the best option for what I want (powerful, yet restrained and not too huge). The only thing I, personally, wish it had was an IPS screen, but that is not a deal-breaker for me by any means. Basically, I just want something portable that can play ARMA III at 1920x1080 resolution, and the y510p seems to be the best laptop for the job at the moment. -
If you want to discuss that laptop, head to the Clevo forums. I can't service you well on Clevos and Sagers. -
Ah, I get it now, those switches on the bottom are to remove the ultrabay, good to know. Now I just need to get a hold of a second 750 GT for mine.
