Do they both have SLI? The reason I'm asking is can you FRAPS the two computers with the same game settings and post the numbers? I was wondering how much that 300MHz really matters for gaming.

Well i hope this information will help someone.
I've ordered my Y510P 59370005 on june 19'th from lenovo's website - got it very quickly.
Unlike other posts here i've supprised to find that i got the matt screen.
Over all i'm very pleased with it .

One thing that is a bit anoying is the DVD drive which very sensitive and if i touch it a bit it eject itself. maybe i've forgot to unlock sometihng on the back.

Regarding HDD replacement . Like panzer , i've got the samsung 840 pro 512 GB . but unlike him.. ive worked a bit with the laptop and after some time made the cloning (panzer did that externally before initial use)
i've spent some time on cloning with acrunis but with no success . Finally paragon did the trick with no issues at all look at Solved How to Migrate OS to new Hard disk.
The up speed (4 sec+-) and over all performance are better as expected. Microsoft performance score up by 1 to 6.9 and the disk read write score was up by three to 8.1
Regarding Heat and noise its good for me and with compare to my macbook pro the y510p is much much better. The vent hatch on the left is great ,doing what its suppoed to do - removing any heat from the bottom.

Regarding Optimus , i think i've got it . I can see on the nvidia control panel the configuration for combine use of the intel 4600 and gt 750

Thasts it for now. I'll will post further information if i will encounter with something.

    Cheers

I don't think so. His case could be unique. As far as I know there has been only one case and it would be too early to make a judgement based on a single case.

Just wanted to post an update for all those that are concerned about temps on the SLI config. I've found that some games are more brutal than others and found the champ today.

20 min of Bioshock Infinite pushed the cards to 86 and 98C respectively. This is in a cool room on an aluminum platform with much airspace. Using the Notepal U3 did not reduce temps any. The ultrabay card is just not up to the task of cooling, owing to the far more limited heatpipe/copper fins. Did not throttle down from what I can tell, but the microstutter was pretty rough. This is using GeForce experience settings in combination with Inspector, no overclock. Performance was decent, but not smooth.

    What driver were you using?

I heard anything above 310-311 has microstutter. Try downgrading to the stock drivers? You could lose a few FPS but the stutter might go away.

86c is perfectly fine and acceptable as long as that heat does not get to you. 98c is pushing the limit. Is 98c for the sli gpu?

I'm not worried all that much about the stutter. It's very reasonable in most games, more a temperature concern. I have a DV7 that is in the same temp range for the GPU, but does not bode well for longevity.

Yes, the SLI GPU (98C) is always quite a bit warmer. Usually a reasonable 91 or so, but a few games really seem to add an extra 5+

I also have the Newegg model from a couple weeks back that i bought my girlfriend, Came with 4700, 12gb ram and (Claimed 8gb SSD) but was 24gb ssd.
Will be checking out Ram speeds and screen model on each. Also running benchmarks on each and posting the details later.

Sadly i bought a SATA SSD and not an mSATA so.. im either doomed to have 128gb SSD as my main drive... or just keep the 5400 RPM

Wait... are you sure that $999 one is SLI? Because description says things like:

    15.6-Inch Screen, NVIDIA GeForce GT750M

    NVIDIA GeForce GT750M

Standard with NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2GB graphics, this laptop lets you add a second card with NVIDIA SLI technology using the Ultrabay to generate up to 1.6 times more frame rate performance.

All of those makes me think its single card but then only at "At Glance" section it says:

Dual NVIDIA GeForce GT750M Discrete graphics (SLI) with 2GB dedicated DDR5 VRAM.

So makes it feel like 50 - 50 about if it haves single or dual gpus.

Another question, if you buy via that deal on Amazon you dont get the 1 year warranty right? Site only mentions something about a 30 days refund purchase.

    Thanks for your answers guys!

Next time, buy with a visa or mastercard with warranty extension. What this does is for free, doubles the manufacturer warranty up to an additional year. This is null and void if you purchase an extended warranty. Usually they also give 90 days theft/accidental damage as well :p

Its a 200MHz difference BTW, Using the Geforce Experience recommended settings (mostly Ultra) with v-sync off, and judging from scripted scenes that I started simultaneously, the 4700 gets about 2 FPS more than the 4702, I lowered the settings to High, but it was still just 2 more at most, keep in mind this was in the higher FPS range 50 vs 52, 61 vs 63, but it always was just 2 more as far as I can tell.
Interestingly, the temps on the cards got very similar, at first the 4702 is cooler but eventually it gets about the same.

99% of users wont notice the difference, unless you are running emulators, in which case every 100mhz is like an extra 2-5fps.

    Hey all,

So I ordered the y510p last friday, got it on monday. I've been reading this thread and thought I'd submit my experiences about this laptop so far.

I got the SLi version, with the 4700 processor, 8gb ram, matte screen. From unboxing to having everything set up, took me about 5 minutes. A lot of people had problems with the wireless card, but mine seems to work amazingly well. Speedtest gives me ~80/9 wireless without any tweaking (110/10 max), so I'm very happy with that. Performance on games has been very good, so far I've had perfect performance with the games I've tried, which are Hawken, HoN, Dota 2, Rift, CS:GO, all on the highest settings possible, but vsync turned off.

Only problem I had was when gaming, using WASD configuration, the palm of my hand would come in contact with the trackpad causing the game to minimize. This was easily fixed however, by having the trackpad be turned off when a USB mouse is attached. There's other options to fix that, but I found this one to be the easiest since I mostly use a USB mouse.

I know many have had problems with this laptop, or atleast claim to have some, but my overall experience so far has been extremely positive. Probably biggest positives to me are the gaming performance, and the multitasking ability- at one point I was downloading Dota 2 while installing Rift, all the while playing Hawken on high graphics, but still didn't experience any problems with performance. I really would recommend this laptop to anyone considering it. Can't say much about other laptops though. If anyone has questions, I'll be happy to answer :)

    Hello,

I've got an y510p last week and I was wondering if it is normal to reach 90-95 °C ( the CPU ) while playing Guild Wars 2 ?

How can I disable trackpad while a mouse is conected ?

    Have a good day,

    Daniel

How were you able to get the matte screen? Did you have to ask a rep for it, did you order from somewhere other than the Lenovo web site, or...? I only see the glossy screen listed on the Lenovo web site.

    Fn + F6

About the matte screen I think is overaterd, it does reduce reflection yes, but glossy screen gives you more bright and rich colors than matte and I see myself using more that than avoiding a window reflection (at least on my case). When I order mine ill be happy with any glossy or matte screen I get :)

I noticed my laptop (from Rakuten) has an ELAN trackpad, and the one from Lenovo has one from Synaptics which feels a lot more responsive, I mostly use a mouse, so I'm not that worried. Out of curiosity which one do you guys have?

I think the keyboard with the ELAN is better than the other one, the keys press a bit deeper, feels the same as the Y500... strange

The situation with the matte/glossy screen keeps getting more confusing.

Did you order directly from Lenovo or from a place like Newegg?

I absolutely agree. Just got mine Y510p with SLI it is with a matte screen but the funny things is that i also don't have the NGFF slot. I am so annoyed as i didn't know to check this at the store and now i belive the warranty doesn't cover it up so i guess i would have to use a 2,5 SSD.... I have no idea why Lenovo is doing this and not putting the slot.

What country did you order your Y510p. A thead in Lenovo forum also discusses the lack of the NGFF slot in Bulgaria: NO NGFF in Lenovo Y510p - Page 2 - Lenovo Community
Looks like this issue is not isolated in one place anymore.

Its not possible to order directly for Lenovo here in Finland, I had to order through a retailer. The retailer received about 100 y510ps a week or two ago, and they all have the matte screen. I'm assuming they're newly produced laptops, so maybe the next batch that comes to sale in the U.S. and Canada will have that, along with the 4700 instead of the 4702.

Yeah sure, I'll do that today or tomorrow and report back.

Btw, a lot of discussion about the heating, but even with the 4700 I haven't noticed any problems, even after several hours of high gfx gaming. Only the airflow from the left and right sides are somewhat warm, but by no means hot and they don't bother me at all.

Hey LordRahl, did the unit you bought on newegg advertise a SSD cache as part of it's features? Maybe Lenovo is only not putting the slot in on units that don't have the cache? Either way, it's insane and irresponsible on Lenovo's part.

Hey, so I tried out Planetside 2 for about an hour. Min fps was 25, max around 45 with the highest possible settings (ultra etc). This was when playing on some big desert map with hundreds of people on screen, never went under 25 and was very playable. Note though that I havn't tweaked any of the settings, I just have SLi turned on and that it, so I'm sure you could get even better fps if you know what you're doing :D

I am not sure if something has changed, but I think some months back the SLI profile for Planetside 2 was very lacking and you had to adjust it yourself to get better performance. Tweaking the maximum pre-rendered frames also does help. The biggest problem with this notebook and PS2 should actually be the CPU, because that is the biggest bottleneck. I don't know which one you got, but according to this review with the 4700 the turbo boost doesn't really work and it even throttles hardcore once it gets too hot. It would be very helpful if you could check your clockspeed and your temperatures while playing PS2. Undervolting the CPU and somehow enabeling turbo boost might help, but I fear the cooling isn't sufficient enough and it would begin to throttle anyway.
This is the only thing that keeps me away from this notebook as I intend to play mostly CPU intensive games, but it seems most other notebooks also fail to cool the haswell chips.

The only way to get better temp is choosing a laptop with 2 fans. I know Sli version has 2 fans but it doesn't apply to here. I am talking about one fan dedicated for cpu and another fan for gpu.

Any gaming laptop with one single fan is going to reach near 100c. As long as it does not hit T-junction, it's fine though.

Exactly, which is why Alienware and ASUS G-series have always had the best cooling.

The single fan also happens to be Achilles' heel of the MSI gaming notebooks, that along with the fugly design. :p

Rooy, I can try that out for you, get some CPU temps etc., while playing PS2, just need to figure out how to do that first :D Any tips for that? Btw, I got the 4700 one.

Awesome! I got mine from kannettavatietokone.fi, unfortunately they've upped the price 100e, so now it's the same exact price as verkkokauppa.com. Kannettavatietokone has them in stock so you'll get it in a day or two (mine would've arrived the next day if that hadn't been a saturday), but verkkokauppa.com has a deal where you get a 3 year warranty, so 1 year more than regular, for free. With vk.com you'll probably have to wait atleast a week, I ordered mine from there first but after waiting 2 weeks I noticed kt.fi had it in stock and for cheaper so I went with that.

Edit: Oh and Dyyd, if you do order from vk.com, dont forget to add the code "15413" as a product to your order, otherwise you wont get the extra year of warranty ( http://www.verkkokauppa.com/fi/kolmevuotta).

Except the alienware and Asus-G are huge, heavy laptops. (and the AW is overpriced)

    AW 14: 6.16 pounds
    Asus G46VW: 5.5 pounds
Y410P: 4.85 pounds (yes, Lenovo's website shows INCORRECT weight)

Asus seems like the winner, but ive had *bad* experiences with them in the past, such as faulty CPU sockets, missing components, bad customer support (worse than Lenovo) and a near non-existant return policy (after 8 calls, they still wouldn't take it back).

Basically, it's like this (gaming laptops):
    - Best all-around: Clevo/Sager
    - Best customer support: MSI
    - Best cooling: Asus
    - Best design: Alienware/Razer
    - Best price: Lenovo

Can't have everything. Something's gonna give. Mobility comes with a price and better cooling also comes with a price. I bought my G750 to be DTR, so weight and size were no-issue.

I swear to god Lenovo, hire a web developer who doesnt speak Engrish.

The amount of errors on the Lenovo website is astronomically high.

Thanks. There are several ways to display your temps and clockspeed, but I think using HWiNFO should be pretty accurate. What I'm most interested in is if this thing really doesn't exceed 2.4GHz while gaming and how long it takes until it starts to throttle.
