And almost everything can be upgrade by ourselves if we want in later date, dats what gamer like me need, a laptop which is completely upgradeable :/

Edit: Even their lower price one have the same spec as y510p with 750m Optimus Technology enabled, even better, 16gb ram, 7000rpm hard drive
    http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=product_customed&model_name=NP6652

FOR ONLY $1089, No tax needed for NY, dats like $400 usd cheaper..... Comeon....

Guys I need your advice... due to this whole 4702 thing I'm now debating whether I should keep my Y500 (was about to ship it back since I got the Y510) or keep the Y510.

Here's what I paid (pre tax):
    Y510 4702MQ 750M SLI 16GB RAM - $1,049.00
    Y500 Single 750M 8GB RAM- $809

$240 for the extra 750m card, 8GB more ram,Optimus, and Matte screen isn't bad considering what lenovo sells the extra card for but those 3d tests posted earlier are putting me off a bit.

For me, the biggest problem is not the 4702 CPU, but the 750M being underclocked when not plug-in. It makes the graphics performance worse than my old 2 generation i5.
Could anyone please recommend some laptops under $1500 that have similar performance and weight but do not disable iGPU?

But do you want to have your GPU at full power for hardcore gaming while unplugued? That would last you less than 2 hours anyways on any laptop.

I ordered a y510p with the 4702mq SLI edition, and a y500 SLI, both with 16gigs of ram. Whats the performance going to look like between the two? Trying to decide which one to keep and which one to return.

Gaming on the battery won't provide the same performance while plugged. That will drain the battery real fast, and the heat would damage the battery .

Which is why I am looking for a laptop with proper iGPU, HD4600 or even HD4000 in the 3rd generation. The HD4600 will show up in this Y510P but does not work properly.
I have tested it last night by removing the utralbay 750m.
It doesn't matter the PhysX sets to 750M or CPU, as long as the power cord is plugged in, the 750m works at full clock. Once I unplug the laptop, the 750m goes underclocked but the HD4600 does not seem to work.
BTW, the laptop lasts 3h2m before it goes into sleep, including 5mins gaming, 20mins video streaming, and the rest of time for just web browsing.

Just pick any optimus enabled laptop(pretty much all of them are). There are only a couple that have SLI capabilities and have optimus disabled. Msi and sager both make comparable and superior laptops at your price range

I don't expect it performs as same as while plug. The problem is the the 750m being underclocked and HD4600 not working properly while plugged, its performance in game is worse than my previous i5-2310m with 6630M while unplugged.

I agree. I tested this with my y500. I got better framerates with hd 3000 on my Alienware than I did with my throttled 750M SLI. Same game same res on both laptops.

Actually, I was originally going to RMA it and get the Y510p. After finding out there was no longer mSata support, I decided to cancel my y510p order. Since I had the option to still RMA the Y500, I'm in the process of still doing so(shipping it back tomorrow). It's a good laptop and I don't unplug it, so it never bothered me that there was no Optimus. But it is rather large and there are better laptops out there now, for similar prices, in my opinion. So now I'm going to wait it out and try to find something more portable with a mid-range GPU. I've considered the new 14" Razer blade but their prices are insane(about $400 overpriced). I'm mainly waiting to see if the new 13" MBP will carry the 750M or not. If it does, I might go with that. I have a good desktop, so I don't really "need" a hardcore gaming laptop. I would however like something that plays games decently and is portable. If not, I'll probably go with an MSI or Sager laptop. I'm trying to be patient. :)

There is NO optical drive now for dual graphics card buy guys, i confirmed that with a sales rep just now lol. Instead there will be a blank space lolololol. or a description as "none".
SO, new ppl who just joined this thread, Beware, if you go for the DUAL graphics card option, now you will get NO dual graphics card, zero, nothing there, blank space. basically paying more then the basic option for that op blank space. :)
If u dont believe me, check out what they say on the Dual graphics card model on y500 :)

    LOLOL..... Hyped :twitchy:

First I would like to add if your main concern is battery life and to game unplugged thats simple not going to happen. Unless you desire to play candy crush lol. No real gaming will ever be done unplugged gpu's and cpu's draw to much power under load. Only gaming that you can do unplugged at the moment are Arm based cpu's and android or ios.

I agree, I'm a Mac user. This system is for Windows gaming only and is always plugged in, however, there are people who want to choose to do what is not recommended anyway. Even if it only last 30 minutes they want to try. It's human nature to resist the easy road.

Could somebody please suggest some alternatives to Y510P other than MSI/Sager/Clevo? Ideally they should cost around the same (<$1200), have similar performance, and are somewhat portable (~6 pounds)?

There's Asus and Alienware. You'll pay a premium for the brand though. Not sure if Asus has released Haswell models yet. I don't think you're going to find anything under $1200 though. Reason everyone brings up sager and Msi is because there isn't any other alternative for the price.

Xoticpc has all the latest models for each brand available. Check there and also do a thread search in this thread. Lots of people have made recommendations over the past couple weeks. There's about 2-3 models per brand that are equivalent or superior than Lenovo but you have to be ok with giving up something, such as backlit kb, weight, size, ram. There's no perfect match at Lenovo's prices. I personally would rather have no backlit kb than to have that odd glowing touchpad that sager is selling lol.

I've been following this thread for around 40 pages and have checked their website every day. That change has been there for around 3 days now, friend. It's a main reason I haven't bought one, still. Because I can't have a glossy screen I go outside too much.

    so lets see -

    cpu changed
    ram changed? (can someone confirm?)
lcd screen changed? (can someone confirm?)

we should document all the changes.

also, please read their policy -

Hey guys I called up a tech specialist and he said that the 5th model is still SLI ( two 750M's). They changed the optical drive to "none" because it was apparently confusing a lot of people.

This is interesting. I was taking my mSata out from my Y500 so I could return it, I noticed under the wifi card that there is a second area to solder a PCI-E slot. The screw hole is also long enough for a standard msata. I wonder if the y510p has this area as well. If someone has the guts, they could potentially add a slot for mSata support. If anyone has a Y510p and doesn't mind opening it, please snap a picture of this area. IMG_20130619_193413.jpg IMG_20130619_193404.jpg

With two cards, however I did run 3dmark11 the first night I got it with single card, and it was pretty much the same although I didn't save the record.

    Thanks for the info.

So I called Lenovo about sending me the wrong processor and as soon as they saw it was a Y510 they were like "oh yes this was a manufacturing issue, send the machine in for a full refund". I wasn't too thrilled with that option so I opted for a $50 credit, which means I got the machine for $999 before tax.
