I don't think gaming at high setting looks distinctively worse than gaming at ultra setting on a 15" screen, so instead of pushing the limit, just dial down a little and much better thermal and noise performance.

1080p resolution running on a 4K screen equates to 4 pixels for each image pixel, not 2.

Does anyone know the difference in power usage between 1080p and 4k?

Sorry for bugging you, but is it wise to customise these models instead of buying the laptop with the default specs? I thought it would be high specs even as default, plus it seems more expensive if you start customising such models.

At least at xotic, the cf2, the lowest model you can get, is only 50 less than the cf4 if you get the exact same specs. Of course, the cf4 has a 3k screen, so it's really a great value to get the cf4 vs the cf2.

However, the cf2 is like $300 cheaper than the cf4, so if you don't care about 8 more gigs of ram and an extra 128 gb of ssd storage, it is significantly cheaper.

    Edit

Well I reconfigured and now its $150 cheaper... maybe its the Halloween sale, but I distinctly remember it being less of a difference before. Anyway, now the cf2 model is very tempting, espespecially for cash straved people like me.

So aside from being thinner and lighter, what else would make the P35W V3 a better choice than the Clevo P650SE? I'm trying to find a reason to justify the extra cost. Anyone know if the V2's speakers were any good?

Don't know about speaker, but you can pull the ODD out of P35 and put in another HDD/SSD while using the laptop.

Lets not forget it has a much better battery vs the crap one the clevo engineers thought would be hilarious to troll their fellow tech fanatics with. Might also have a better power supply to support things vs an underpowered ( but I need to reclarify)

*total noob* Are these temperature normal or too hot? The 51°C - 91°C window for the CPU seems huge.

I've never had CPU/GPU exceeding 75°C, but then I never had a laptop with such beastly specs. Those temperatures seems reasonable.

    "Hi Cakefish,

Our warranty is global, so customer can use warranty in countries other than the original purchase country.

    Please pass information on.

    Thanks,

    GigabyteUk NB Team"

Not ideal. However, Battlefield 4 is notoriously CPU intensive. This is likely a worst case scenario.

I do not own the game, so can't compare to my current Clevo, but I know Haswell CPUs typically run hot in these kinds of games in most notebooks out there.

You don't know the ambient temps, so it's hard to tell.
Also, the CPU is allowed to get up to 100 degrees celcius, according to Intel spec: ARK | Intel® Core™ i7-4860HQ Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.60 GHz)

Maybe replacing the factory thermal compound with Artic Silver will also get you some extra headroom.

Yes the core series, c404 (14") and c504 (15"). But it's the old gigabyte serie with th 8xx nvidia card. For now we must wait for a refrssh with the new cards.
For more see here: mySN.de | SCHENKER XMG | Schenker Technologies

    Additional:
I have asked schenker, for bios restrictions. There are no restrictions, you can change the wifi card if you want. So you can buy it with out a wifi card and buy your own ;). Because i hate intel cards.

They are, at least in the UK the C504 and C404 lines are P35 and P34 based. However I asked when they might have the v3 (i.e. 970M/980M) lines in stock and the best date they can give me is before Christmas:
New! XMG C504 Core Gaming Laptop - Official thread - Page 2.

If they get something up before the end of the month and it comes out okay in cost, then I'll probably go with them...

    P35X v3 (980M yay!)
Certainly can do. I plan to write a full review. And eventually do a video review, though that will take longer as I am completely inexperienced with video editing and have many uni lectures/coursework this week. Probably will have to wait for the weekend for that.

Written review can definitely be done tomorrow though :)

Yes but the weather outdoors has nothing to do with the temperatures of the notepad, unless it's summer time and there is no AC in the room.
So you won't get colder temperatures unless you are both gaming outdoors, which is extremely unlikely : )

I've been looking around for information on the battery, which isn't defined too well. It's a Li-Poly 2 cell, which may or may not be a good thing considering that most gaming laptop batteries are 6 or 8 cell. I hoping to see some battery life stats before I commit to this laptop. While the case appears to be a bit lower quality than MSI and ASUS, the hardware inside this laptop almost seem too good to be true. It seems likely that someone will be doing an in depth review of one of the CFx within a week or so.

Thanks for the info. I was going to get a MSI GS60, but I was hoping to get a laptop with 15" IPS and a 980m. Once I found this Gigabyte, it almost seemed too good to be true. I just hope that it doesn't run overly hot. Thanks again.

I realize this has been asked like 20 times already, but I never saw a definitive answer. Are the gpus mxm or soldered? I heard that the 6 and 8 gb gpus were mxm only, but I'm not sure if that'd true.

Soldered. Not true about vRAM size. No way to fit MXM in a 0.8" thick chassis.

Pressure's on you, Cakefish! :p Hopefully it's not too good to be true and they fixed the keyboard and it doesn't overheat like crazy. This is the laptop I want. $2k is a steep price, but worth it if it's overall a solid machine with no game breaking flaws.
