Didn't look like anybody tested the Shift + Tab + Alphanumerical combinations, so I wound up unboxing my Aero 15 to test. Shift + Tab + the entire QWER row and Shift + Tab + the entire ZXCV row are not responsive. This is a pretty big problem for me. Unfortunately, I am now faced with a 15% restocking fee if I decide to return the machine because it's been unboxed. That is, unless the vendor considers this defect sufficient to warrant a full refund. :(

Can you not assign your shortcuts to a different combination to mitigate this issue?

Anyone experience instability with the system? i have the following (not so rare occasions):

    - BSOD with the Driver_power_state_failure error
    - Several system logs for the nvlddmkm (error id 14)
    - in many cases a process named System uses around 15-20% of the processor and the pc will not shutdown it does not freeze though.
This could explain why my battery life is also fluctuating.
-During one of the instances i did see that the nvidia card was being used by a program but could not identify which.

I only did updates from the smart manager after installing on the 960EVO using the flash tool.

any hints are welcome as this is starting to become very noticable.

If the P35X is the same chassis as the older P35W, then go for the Aero 15. I just purchased the Aero 15 for my son to upgrade a 3-year old P35Wv2 for college. The P35 was decent enough, but bigger, heavier, hotter, louder fans and the mostly plastic chassis has warped through the keyboard over time. Plus I think the P35s are like some MSI models, in that you have to watch out for the lowest price models that have poor displays and hybrid storage. I consider the P35 barely portable. The Aero 15 is decent, while the Razer Blade is probably the most portable of the GTX1060 options. If the display option is 1080p FHD, then a GTX1060 is more than sufficient for almost all games.

You really only need a 1070 if you have a QHD screen. For 4K displays, you either need to scale down or have a GTX1080 to be reasonably playable. Some of the upcoming Max-Q 1070/1080 machines might be reasonably portable options if you want QHD gaming at decent framerates.

It's probably average to above average for brightness, definitely not the brightest I've seen. On the plus side, it's a matte finish which helps outdoors and with interior lights, too.

The Gigabyte dashboard has a "Quiet" setting that makes it very quiet and cool for libraries and such when you are not gaming. The gaming fan mode will get somewhat loud and very warm when you are gaming, of course, just like any other thin and light notebook with a dedicated GPU.

Anyone know the correct Torx screw size to remove the back panel? I'm upgrading the Sata M.2 drive to a NVMe drive and rather buy a high quality driver then a cheap set that I can only use once. Thanks!

Our experience with the fans is the quiet setting is dead silent. Normal setting runs ~ 2100 RPM and is barely noticeable 1 foot away. In a library it might be heard. Gaming mode runs ~ 5400RPM and is quite noticeable.

No major problems 1 week in.

Check if emptyproject11.exe (in task manager) is active. If it is, that's what is keeping your dGPU engaged. You can find the source of the file and simply replace it with an empty txt file.

Also, regarding CPU usage, is it the "System" that is taking up CPU cycles? If so, try disabling any temperature monitoring programs you have active, such as afterburner or HWInfo and see if CPU usage goes down.

I had this issue and using process explorer had to do with a power state / saving feature that was being engaged constantly with CPU/GPU monitoring. I think it is related to Optimus as when I run a game in 3D, the usage from that particular thread disappears. As soon as I'm back to desktop, it reengages until I close monitoring programs.

    Still haven't found a fix. It's a Windows 10 quirk / driver compatibility quirk.

I do not seem to have any such process running. Up to now the behavior seems to be a bit random and cannot reproduce it on demand.
I experienced it while working on power point but also randomly. not on gaming itself.
Also i do not have any monitoring software running. the fact that the logs are for an nvidia file, i suspect it is something with the driver but i already have the recommended version.. i installed process explorer for now and hope i will be able to capture it at some point...

You probably know this, but for others reading, there is an extra USB port on the power adapter that is always on. I'm not sure if the ports on the laptop itself can be set to charge when the laptop is off. I don't recall seeing any settings for that in the BIOS, so I'm guessing they can't, but maybe someone else has done it.

I do have an odd problem that has happened twice now.

The 'p' will not work, not even for an external keyboard. A reboot resolves this.

This should be available in the smart manager. As far as I know, only one USB port works for charging, and charging works in sleep mode always, hibernate mode as well if the laptop is plugged in. (Coming from Aero 14 user).

i tried with usb ports when it was sleeping but no lack. the smart manager also does not have an option for this as far as i can tell...see the attached please.

I think Gigabyte has lost their baskets with the smart software.. if you look at smart update.. it takes waayyy too long to load (10 mins??) and then you get for the keyboard firmware:

    Driver Version: 1.1.8
    Official driver : 1.1.4
    Latest: 1.1.8

the fusion software already updated the firmware to 1.1.8

and you would not like to compare it with the support site where it says:
keyboard firmware: 1.1.7 updated on 28/06/217...!!!

thats what you call user friendly!! you may also see in the attached similar things for the bluetooth...

i think they need to straighten this out very quickly...

Just got the 15 yesterday, and wiped it to put Windows 10 Pro on it. I noticed that the screen is pretty dark on it, even on Windows 10 brightest. I went to the website an installed all the drivers for it, but that did not help. Is this something I can fix

Just and update folks on the mini DP- I only have passive adapters and after talking with Gigabyte, they require Active ones. The main difference is that active adapters have a chip that translate DP to HDMI while passive adapters need the PC/MAC to do the conversion. I just ordered an active adapter and will test :)

On a sidenote, I just got a USB-C > USBx4 hub that works just fine. So once I get my mini DP working, I'd say I'm satisfied with my laptop.

Are you on the Windows 10 Creators Update by chance? I experienced the exact same issues 3-4 a day, however, did a clean install and didn't update to the Creators Update and I haven't had one BSOD yet. I also left the NVIDIA Drivers at the recommended 376.67

I'm honestly not sure if it was the Creators Update or an issue with the latest NVIDIA drivers, however, it's certainly concerning that we seem to be alone with this issue - I didn't change any hardware (original SATA SSD and 16GB RAM) so know it's most likely not an issue with an aftermarket component you installed. Even more frustrating is that if it is the Creator's Update, there's no real way to stop it without doing some voodoo with a metered connection / potentially missing out on security patches. Now that the machine is running well it's a great laptop with a good balance of power and portability, however, I'm certainly still concerned... I'd try to isolate the issue to a particular driver, however, with it running well for the past two weeks I really don't want to go down that rabbit hole when I'm using the machine for work.

My Aero arrived this week and I have to say I am quite happy with it.

From the list of usual complaints around here:
The screen wobble is not that noticeable. It wobbles way less than my clevo p177sm and it is looser than my XPS 13. However it is by no means loose. With the laptop on my lap, moving the legs produces no screen wobble at all. When the lid is being closed it snaps the last 10°, but that does not bother me.

The screen is very good with no dead pixels or exaggerate backlight bleed. There is minor bleed but hardly (very hardly) noticeable.

I'm taking some time to get used to the keyboard. I don't really like the font, but all keys register nicely. The "D" key has an odd behaviour, when pressed on the top of the key it scrapes against the keyboard body, popping back half a second later. Not a deal breaker but mildly annoying. I might take a file to it.

Idle temps are a bit high, 50 for CPU and 40 for GPU, but the weather has been unusually hot. I will repaste in a few months if the situation does not improve. Gaming temps are 90° for CPU and 83° for GPU. Undervolting is in my to-do list to address CPU temps.

I updated windows (creator's update) and installed Nvidia experience (to play well with my shield TV) and the latest Nvidia drivers (a few versions more recent than the update utility suggested drivers). There were no BSOD and all games play quite well.

Tested WarThunder (all settings maxed, 90 fps) and PUBG (custom settings for visibility sake, ~85 fps). Later capped both to 60fps to save resources as the screen is only 60Hz.

As for bloat, I decided to avoid a fresh Win10 install to keep the Pantone calibration. So I uninstalled the screen casting software, dolby software, the realtek lan optimizer and a few others but kept most gigabyte applications.

If you have any other questions let me know. I got mine from the UK and it had the PCIe SSD and 2 sticks of 8GB.

    Cheers

Well, I kept anything and my system is stable and quick.
As long, as you don't want to replace your SSD, I see no reason to deinstall anything. Sure, smart update is not as smart as it's name indicates but still a good tool to get a quick overview.
Monitoring CPU & GPU temperature and usage vie smart manager is ok. I wouldn't deinstall this one, as it puts a lot of controls in one window.
Lan Optimizer and xsplit Broad&Gamecaster - I never used. Even have no idea what's it useful for.

    About Keyboard issue.
I tested through combinations and ended like following missing key combinations:

    LCTRL+LSHIFT+SPACE = LCTRL+LSHIFT+B
    LCTRL+LSHIFT+DOWN = LCTRL+LSHIFT+UP = WTF!?
    LCTRL+LALT+X = no function
    LCTRL+LALT+E = no function
    LCTRL+LALT+D = no function
    LSHIFT+LALT+X = no function

More than this LSHIFT+LCTRL+LALT turns out different results, but none expected. You can check this with your fusion software and flashkeys on.
    So LSHIFT+LCTRL+LALT+ANYKEY is not working.

LALT+LCTRL first, LSHIFT will not be recognized.
LSHIFT+LCTRL first and later LALT turns out in: SHIFT+CTRL+B ???!!!
LSHIFT+LALT first and last LCTRL - LCTRL is not recognized.

Right side seems to work without restrictions, but that's wrong side for me.

After Effects has SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+S for incremental save what I am missing.
Knowing now this information, one can switch to right side combination.
zBrush uses SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+Stroke for inverted clip brush, but the keyboard always returns SHIFT+CTRL+B which increases clip selection.

Understanding that malfunction, one is better prepared for nonsense happening.
Anyway I have not a clue wtf Gigabyte team around fusion software had in mind when they wrote this crap?

Hi. I have been using Aero 15 for the past 1 month. How long does it take for a full battery charge? For past two days the battery is charging at a very slow pace. Battery bar shows the charge rate is at 7,800 mW. I updated to the latest version of smart manager as well. It takes so many hours for a full charge. Any solution to this problem?

Seriously having keyboard issues as well for the LCTRL + LSHIFT where I use Excel often for work and it doesn't work or it responds in the opposite direction where down arrow key gives you up arrow key response. Have updated to latest 1.1.8 but still faced this issue. Have sent email to Gigabyte and posted on their forums as well. Frankly don't expect such keyboard bugs from a high-end notebook where good money was spent.. Anyone has any solution for this instead of waiting for Gigabyte to respond apart from using the RCTRL OR RSHIFT?

Wanted to share this for those who don't like Smart Manager UI.
Best acceptable solution/compromise for the Smart Manger Ugly UI.
Do the following in order to "remove" the ugly as hell OSD from Smart Manager.
    1. Ensure Smart Manager task isn't running. (kill it will the task manager)
    2. Navigate to: "C:\Program Files\SmartManagerV3\OSD"
    3. Copy file: IsMetroUI.dll to the Skin directory.
    4. Rename: OSD_Skin.dll to something like: OSD_Skin.dll_backup
    5. Rename: IsMetroUI.dll to: OSD_Skin.dll
    6. Start Smart Manager
If you simply just delete the skin dll file it will throw errors so thats why we replace with this other and seems to not complain.

The compromise is that the application and FN key combos still work but without the vomit inducing Gigabyte Windows Vista OSD being displayed.
You still get volume OSD, just not the brightness or other toggles on screen.

Hello fellow Aero 15 owners. Got mine last week.... and I've got a few complaints / questions.

    1. My screen came scratched out of the box. It's a tiny scratch, about 1/2 centimeter, but it's clearly visible to a white (or other bright color) background. I'm still deciding if it's worth the hassle to RMA.

    2. I hooked up a TV to it via HDMI. It worked great for desktop and web browsing usage, but as soon as I launch a game I lose video signal to the TV. I'm GUESSING the HDMI is plugged straight into the GTX 1060, and with Nvidia optimus active, the signal isn't being passed to HDMI. Am I right? Any way around this?

    3. My previous laptop was also an Nvidia optimus (GTX 860m) but it behaved differently, at least according to MSI afterburner. On my 860m based laptop, when the GPU was not in use, afterburner did not give a temp readout for the GPU (readings would zero out). On this laptop, there is a temp reading 100% of the time. Is this normal?

Glad to see many other Aero 15 users. Thanks in advance for the answers & help.

Send it back a new machine shouldn't have any issues with the screen yet alone a scratch. Would deem that as unacceptable. Do an exchange that technically isn't an RMA as you're not returning the goods for a refund.

    Hello everyone!

Just got my aero15 this week. I'm also a long tome Mac user so this is a new adventure for me.

The one issue I'm having is the mini disport will not display to my external monitor. What am I missing? Guessing this is user error.

Thanks for any help you can offer !

Hi folks, got my Aero 15 today, unsure on whether I like it. Got a couple of questions:

    1. Is the screenbleed bad in the attached image?
    [IMG] here

    2. In the second image: I got this annoying blurb/cluster that's on the display, and I have no idea why. It's only visible on a white background and is highly annoying. Worth returning over?

    3. The price was quite a bit high, and I feel bad over it. I can afford it, but feel I wont get the most out of it's performance. If I return my machine, what's a good and cheaper alternative?
Same battery or better, less performance, etc.

    Thank you!

Uhh, always hard to judge by a picture.
The blue stripe in middle and yellow on bottom is nothing I would accept. Is it really there, or camera given?
There is a bit bleeding around the bezel, visually much less visible than by a camera taken picture.
Less than what I see in your case.

Me, if I am not under time pressure, and I would feel bad, I would return.
But I can't recommand anything similar in this price class.
For me the razor blade was an alternative, but much more expensive, no second SSD, no real network plug - so no real alternative for me.

The Asus GL502VS 1070 is only $1699 and performs near enough to the new Asus Zephyrus Max-Q 1080 and runs way cooler to the touch than the Zephyrus.

The Asus GL502VS 1070 might not be as thin as the Zephyrus or Aorus, but it's thin enough, and $1000 cheaper than the Zephyrus. :)
The Asus Zephyrus Max-Q 1080 costs $2700. The Asus GL502VS 1070 with similar performance results, running much cooler, costs $1700, for $1000 savings, for the same slim carry class laptop.

    @hmscott
    Same battery life?
Haven't seen any GTX1070 supporting Optimus and therefore long battery life. That would be a good info!

    @hammer84
check out Smartmanager and monitor switch. should be easiest. FN+F5
Second a restart with plugged monitor can give a quick result.
And of course windows or and nvidia Settings, if this is still not working. Better people with English windows help in this case.

There's a good reason why you won't find high end gaming laptops with Optimus, Optimus sucks :)

If you want a high end laptop, 1060 and above, don't saddle it with Optimus, it'll mess you up if not immediately, then as you try to do things throughout ownership.

I could go for pages on the people I've helped stuck with Optimus trying to work around it so they can do their work or run their game or make it work with VR, it's just so sad because with Optimus it's a physical locked in thing that's wired the dGPU through the Intel iGPU, and the iGPU directly to the display. You can't get rid of Optimus if your laptop has it.

Thin build and long battery life isn't a compatible gaming laptop profile.

The hardware for one isn't like the hardware of the other.

If you want a long battery life laptop then you want to go there all the way, to get the 8-14 hour run times. A ULV CPU, and no discrete GPU.

If you want a powerful dGPU laptop, then let it connect directly to the display and be in complete control of it, then everything you want to do will work, with no iGPU or Optimus muckery to mess you up.

Even a MUX sucks because you aren't going to extend battery life of a high end quad core CPU and the support hardware of a powerful laptop. Mine gives me 2.75hrs battery instead of 2.25hrs, 30 whole minutes.

Carry 2 or more devices, don't try to marry a race horse with a guppy. ;)

    Hi there!

If you believe the Aero 15 is too powerful and expensive for your needs there are other options in the "thin 'n' light" category. Some of them are:

    - Clevo P950HP6. i7-7700HQ, GTX 1060. From $1384.

    - Dell XPS 9560. i5-7300HQ/i7-7700HQ, GTX 1050. From $1199.

    - Asus UX550 ZenBook Pro. i7-7700HQ, GTX 1050/ GTX 1050 Ti. Coming in August?

Hope this helps to give an idea of what is out there! :)

The Zenbook Pro UX550 is pretty much exactly what I want/need and I had considered it, but I wanted to at least try the Aero 15 as I'd had my eye on it ever since it had come out.. I hope the UX550 comes out soon!

The Aero 15 is a very good laptop if you can afford it, but I think the UX550 is a bit more balanced for university/my needs.
