So the Gigabyte representative says "The touchpad on X7 v8 is not the Windows precision one......" and another user is telling me you can install the Windows precision drivers for the ELAN touchpad. Any other more elaborated thoughts on how this may or may not be accomplished? I'd love to be able to use three and four-finger gestures and have a better trackpad experience over all. Thank you.

Yes! This worked and it was even simpler than explained. For those who are interested, just download the driver from the Lenovo site and run the .exe as administrator then proceed with the installation procedure completely. No need to fiddle with the device manager at all. Now I have the three and four finger gestures and options available in Settings and the trackpad in general does seem more smooth and responsive. Thank you!

Whelp looks like i will have to return mine and get another

The laptop will not power on unless connected to the power outlet.

Windows detects the battery at 100%
    So does HWmonitor

I unplugged the battery for about 30 minutes reconnected it and nothing.

It still runs great connected to power but I won't be able to even use the 2 hours on battery if I need to .

Ah well really like this laptop a bunch hopefully more comes in stock.

Just ordered mine... I really hope I don't have that issue, @kitzuki !

It should arrive tomorrow (rushed the shipping because I leave town in a few days). I'm really stoked.

Yeah the only reason I am sending it back is due to my previous history.

If I have a hardware failure within the first 30 days replace the whole unit. To be fair it’s a great laptop and I really had only a few minor annoyances.

The deal I got is sold out and extra savings is over so have some decisions to make now

I was kind of bummed that I couldn't buy it directly from HIDEvolution like I was planning to but EXcaliber PC still had two in stock. They're showing none in stock now.

So far this thing is killing it for me, playing Witcher 3 at 80+ FPS with all settings maxed including HairWorks. Temps are reasonable considering I didn't get it repasted with liquid metal. I haven't even started tinkering with undervolting, overclocking or anything performance-related besides trying to get Windows 10 under control.

I really like this laptop so far! The keyboard has a good feel to it that really reminds me of my 2008 MacBook Pro 15". I've never had a 17" laptop and the screen is just massive. It performs better than my gaming PC from a few years ago. Definitely a good buy so far

Great forum, just found, very helpful info, thank you all.

My v8 has a similar problem as a previous post (by Kitzuki). Mine will not power on at all despite full battery (just silent and dark even after resetting cmos and main battery, which is fully charged & power supply appears fine). Looks like another RMA is unavoidable but I would love to hear anyone's thoughts about why it may be happening or anything to try.

The first version i got (a v7) also died within a few weeks but would power on, just no screen, splash, nor booting... A separate problem led to me replacing it with this v8. Really have treated both with kid gloves and did not push the hardware at all so really puzzled with these two occurances.

While a bit worried about design/manufacture/shipping (?) on these, I have only the HIGHEST PRAISE for the Gigabyte warranty & support guys here in USA. They have been extremely understanding, helpful, and supportive with my situation!!!

I always felt Gigabyte/Aorus was a company-above the other huge-corporate-competitiors, and twice the warranty of others shows their dedication to users and gamers like us. Its unfortunate I have these issues but it still seems atypical for my history... my Aero14 is still chugging along perfectly and so did the various Gigabyte mobos and graphics cards I had thru the years. When operating the X7 DT v8 blew me away, everything I wanted in a premium laptop![/QUOTE]

EDIT: Gigabyte found that the power button itself was faulty (the only one they ever saw not function, they said at the time). Called me directly to discuss. Replaced and shipped back ASAP. Very pleased with their service (again)!

Nice to see a laptop that has decent cooling. 80+ Watts at only 75°C with a steady 42.00 multiplier are the kind of numbers I like to see. Maybe government needs to regulate this industry better and force manufacturers to include a sticker like that on the top of every new laptop. Instead of an ENERGY STAR sticker, how about a PERFORMANCE STAR sticker? This laptop is hereby rated to run at its rated specification without overheating or throttling itself to death. Consumers deserve more from this industry.

Long time reader, first time poster. [WALL OF TEXT but bear with me it is a good learning experience]

Just a little bit of input from my experience with my X7 DT V6, bought from OC.uk(could not find any stock in the US for the life of me)

Also I know this is the X7 v8 thread but come on, am I to expect much activity on the v6 one?

Allow me firstly to say that, when it works, this is hands down the best laptop in terms of everything, (that lovely eagle on the track pad makes it all come together for me[I do very much love all birds of prey, ergo it does not bother me as mentioned in the thread]).

HOWEVER, the 'when it works' clause stands out for a reason.
Since I got this laptop on 2017, I have had a sub par experience with it and customer service as a result. Initially, the bundled 'Drivers Update' utility did its one job and prompted to update several drivers including a BIOS update. While I did know better and that it is always best to take an 'if it ain't broke do not fix it' approach to BIOS updates I said to myself: "It is the official utility, right? What could possibly go wrong? Besides I was having an issue with the keyboard macros locking up the entire keyboard(Backlight shut off and unresponsive) requiring a reboot.

Long story short, lo and behold my brand new $3k laptop would not POST, bricked a mere 2 days after getting it.(Yes I reset cmos, disconnected battery etc...). Therefore I contacted Gigabyte US support, opened a ticket and got a response to the issue with an attached RMA form no later than two days after. I promptly filled out the RMA form and replied to the message; two days: no response. Sent again: No response after 3 days.

I called the number of the US Service center and after several attempts I got put through to a guy(cannot remember his name a t this point it has been a while) that told me he would resend the RMA form and he would look into processing it. I specified the nature of my issue and he said that they could indeed reflash the bios for me, so the lack of response is not due to the nature of the situation. He did end up sending the form again, I filled it out, again, and replied with it, again, no response after a couple of attempts, again.

At this point there was a really expensive brick sitting on my desk and I decided to take action. I bought a 25 series SPI programmer and flashed the eeprom on the board with an image downloaded and verified from the official support website, heh, it worked. Thanks for nothing Gigabyte. This was around Feb 2017.

Fast forward to today and I find myself in a predicklement again (no I did not screw it up), my laptop will boot (sometimes) but no video will be output whether it is the LCD or any of the HDMI/DP.
This was preceded by an ever increasing number of GPU driver crashes up to the point that the laptop would not boot 1 out of 2 times and then 1 out of 3 and so forth. Now it seems to be stuck in this 'boot into OS but no video at all, backlight does come on for a little while during boot then shuts off though.

I am running Win 7, and yes, tried a reinstall, OEM drivers as well as more recent drivers (Newer drivers broke G-Sync for me), repasting(temps were fine everywhere even on VRMs), reseated RAM/SSD/NIC/LVDS cable you name it, checked battery/PS with voltmeter, and nothing out of the ordinary; I even broke out the programmer and ensured that the image in the EEPROM matched the data buffer of the downloaded image. (notice I originally flashed the BIOS image that goes with the proper version of the Embedded Controller FW as quoted by the Aorus support website as well.) All of the later happened of course when I could still get to to show video after a couple attempts to power it on.

I do not know about you, but I am increasingly discouraged to continue doing business with GB as a result of all of this nonsense... My warranty expires on Feb 2019, and I have opened another ticket. At this point I have tried so many things that I do not know what GB could do besides swapping the entire machine...

Let see if I can post an update with good news soon

Okay, I feel like I am now ready to post some of my initial findings with undervolting, temps and performance on this laptop. I'll edit this post as I refine my settings in the future. There's always some little tweak to make.

    CPU:

I have settled on a -.144v undervolt for now (core and cache). It seems stable so far, but I'm not 100% sure yet- I'd like to get it up to -.150v but I had some stability issues at that setting. I wasn't 100% sure if it was due to the undervolt, though. I kept the stock power limits intact, 55 watts for Turbo and 80 watts for Short Turbo (IIRC). Right now I limited turbo boost to 3.9ghz across all cores, but plan to raise that to 4.0.

As far as temps, I've been topping out around 87C in Prime95 Small FFTs. I'm running on bone-stock thermal paste and have the fans set on "Gaming" under Command and Control. I suppose I could switch to the custom fan settings and put them at 100% speed at, say, 75C. Wouldn't bother me much because I always use a headset when gaming.

    GPU:

I just recently started undervolting in MSI Afterburner. Currently, I'm stable at 1860mhz with a +50 MHz offset on VRAM, and *I think* .970v (I'm away from my laptop right now, can't check). Temps hover around 80C.

    Gaming:

I chew through Dark Souls III, probably because there's a framerate cap at 60. Both the GPU and CPU stay below 50% utilization most of the time and temps stay below like 70C.

The Witcher 3 continues to be a true stressor. With all setting on Ultra and Hairworks maxed out, I'm getting around 75-90 FPS with the above settings. With Hairworks bumped down to just Geralt and 2x AA I jump up to about 90-105 FPS. With Hairworks off and everything else maxed I'm solidly above 100 FPS, and this is probably how I'll keep it. Who cares how hair looks? TW3 is the only thing so far that has proven my undervolts to be unstable. I've gotten the GPU down to 1860mhz/.950v and it's stable in Windows and with P95 but it crashed in this game. Suffice to say, this is now my benchmarking tool for stability (I don't want to run Furmark or other programs that might fry my GPU).

DOOM runs so well it's not even worth talking about. Billions of frames per second.

    General Software Issues:

I had stability problems with CPUID's HWMonitor so I switched to HWiNFO which has been great so far. Also, something strange happened in the process of uninstalling Intel XTU and installing/using Throttlestop which caused Command and Control to stop working. I fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling C+C from the manufacturer supplied flash drive, problem solved.

Another very strange thing that I haven't been able to track down: the Bluetooth drivers keep getting uninstalled or something. It has happened twice now, where I go into the Windows settings menu where you turn BT on and that little toggle slider isn't there at all. I simply don't have the option to turn on BT. This means I have to reinstall it. Not sure what's causing this.

    General Hardware Issues:

I really, really want to repaste this thing with some Gelid or Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. I didn't get a chance to buy it from HIDEvolution like I wanted to, and have them repaste it- but ExcaliberPC treated me well too and provided rapid customer service, order processing and shipping. Unfortunately I can't open the laptop up right now due to my job (I'm travelling in Europe for the next few months) so it will have to wait.

Other than it not being as cool as I'd like, I haven't had any other hardware issues. The case is a fingerprint magnet but I guess that's the price we pay for how sexy it looks.

Hello. I've been using this laptop for 4 months now, I have to say it performs very well, no problems so far. I did undervolt the cpu and the temperatures are around 60C - 70C, depending on the load, but when I play Star Citizen, the temps go up to 80C, but not over. I was thinking buying a cooling pad, but I don't know which one to get. This laptop is 17inch, but it's a little bit wider that 17inch, so if you guys could recommend a solid cooling pad for this laptop, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Cooling pad wont really make a difference 1-2c max. did you attach the feet on the laptop? did you try adjusting the curve on your gpu and undervolting the gpu? if you undervolt the gpu you will see a difference in GPU and CPU temps. Look up mr.fox on youtube on how to use msi afterburner to do so

Also put the Gpu power to adaptive

If you want a recommendation a Topmate C7 is what I used.

Yes, I've attached the feet right after I got the laptop. Currently only CPU is undervolted with ThrottleStop, and GPU power is set to adaptive. I will check up mr. fox guide and post the results. When you place your laptop on Topmate C7, does the front anti-skid baffle gets in your way, for example when you are typing?
    EDIT:
For how much did you lower the GPU voltage?
    EDIT 2:
Also I've noticed, when I undervolt the GPU, the clock stays at full all the time, even tho there is no load.

    Hi guys,

Let me share my experience with this laptop. I bought it in June, probably one of the first stock available. It's indeed very powerful laptop and it was working just fine with some minor issues, until just recently my LH hinge broke. I was trying to close my laptop and then heard this cracking noise. Now I no longer can close it, since bottom housing remains fixed and when I go further it just breakes all the plastics, so I decided to keep it opened until I get a reply from Aorus.

Apart this, I also had barely illuminated 'backspace' button, then 'delete' button works every second time and occasionally I get white lines on the screen when scrolling articles or FB pages.

It's so frustrating that a machine which costs ~3k EUR has these problems. I've contacted their warranty dep few days ago, still haven't heard back from them. Now I am just hoping they will be able to help me. At least, I haven't done any changes to this laptop like repasting, undervolting etc. which could void warranty.

Before I had Asus ROG laptop for almost 5years and it never gave me a single problem.. Just an advice, think twice before getting Aorus laptop. I know it's just a bad experience for me, but there are heaps of others who are facing similar problems.

I ordered mine on hidevolution.com with a Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut on CPU + GPU, and Fujipoly Extreme Thermal Pads on heat sensitive surfaces. With undervolting GPU and CPU, my temperatures on minimal load like youtube or watching movies, are around 35-37C.

I just found out that you can order thru Amazon UK, and that they still have more than a few in stock. I would've pulled the trigger if I knew this 2 mos back, but now that CES is just a month away: I'd pass and just wait for the new slew of thin and light 17 inch gaming notebooks. For those looking for the x7 DT v8: Amazon UK is your friend.

The laptop is unstable, and barely boots up in windows with 4 identical sticks of ram installed. It runs well with 2 slots filled ..
Has anybody been able to run stable with the 4 mem slots filled?
I wonder if it's to do with the fact that it's an 8th gen cpu and therefore will need a bios update to fix this..
The mem is very high quality and should run without problem.
    Kingston HyperX 4*16 gb..
    any help appreciated

I don't know about any compatibility issue at the moment. Mine is running on 2x16Gb of Crucial Ballistix and everything is fine.
On the other hand, my X9 was very intolerant with RAM swapping. Had to reset BIOS to get rid of BSOD.
Try unplugging the CMOS battery for a few minutes... ?

I haven't reset the bios indeed as it's not usually necessary for ram swapping.. But you could be right, it's worth a try. I'm waiting for gigabyte to answer on their sides.. The customer support is non existent with them though
