can't make one button cycle (without writing some custom stuff), but you can just assign different fan profiles to diferent buttons: AorusFusion > key action > Click the macro key you want > shortcut tab > choose fan control quiet/normal/gaming

Pretty hot. Mine gpu is running at 64c @1810mhz on full load with an underclock. Cpu at 4.0ghz with - 165mV is about 42c when typing etc.

4GHz with -165mV is certainly very impressive, haven't seen it before on kabylake HK and rock stable. It runs prime or occt fine at that voltage?

Runs prime OK. Did its for about an hour. Don't bother with occt. Did an hour each of 3dmark, heaven, valley, titanfall 2, doom and project car with the later being the most sensitive to overclock as it always uses quite a lot of the cpu.

After work today, will let you know my temps. Curious if mine are high. I had repaste done.

On a side note, grabbed one of the Aorus sleeves for 17 inch. They are pretty cool, really snug fit.

Curious though, what is the difference between normal and high performance power modes? When gaming should one always switch to high performance?

That all depends on whether you need the extra power. It basically is a feature that adjust clockspeed and power consumption, if you need longer battery life you can dial it back to power saving mode where you'll reach 2ghz clocks (I don't know the exact numbers) on CPU & battery, whereas high performance will net you 3ghz on battery. Plugged in it will reach 3,6ghz on all cores (4+ ghz if you set the overclock gauge to max and or overclock). Note that the higher clocks require higher core core voltages. You could use HWmonitor and the likes to experiment and see this for yourself.

Totally... I never tried lower than 3.9GHz at -150mV and I'm using 4.1GHz with -100mV on a daily basis. 4.0GHz with -160mV is holding but when gaming it leads to a crash after a few minutes.

You got a nice CPU.

Managed - 165 but that's my limit. I'm using 4.0 as my daily. It's definitely made a difference with the gpu undervolt too. Temps have dropped a few degrees.

    Thanks for detailed answer.

Curious if anyone knows where to get another set of the stands that come in box? The ones for the bottom of the machine, I feel these might break over time.

Also the cloth that comes with machine on keyboard. Do we always need that between keys and screen when closing lid?

Seems like the gap is large enough screen would not get damaged. Just curious before I take this on trip.

Random questions I know, but seeking answer even if obvious. Has been a long while since I have had laptop.

This is inline with my results as well, a stable 165mV undervolt at 4GHz is silicone lottery jackpot. I'm running 4 GHz @ -105mV, which has been stable thus far. I have no issues going to a greater undervolt at 4GHz, it's the lower frequencies that cause the random crashes (and I have no intent to lock the cpu to run only at the higher freqs).

I recall someone else looking for extra feet, but I don't recall if he was able to procure any (I'd reach out to him if I were you). With that said, I also don't recall anyone saying that their feet broke.
You do not need the cloth; every laptop I've seen comes with one for shipping, but all the laptops are designed to not need them (albeit I have seen some ultrathins not provide enough of a gap and you get an imprint of the keys on the screen (no such issue with x5).

You might be able to acquire new feet through requesting spare parts or ask whether your vendor can get some if the feet happen to have an item ID.

Thanks guys good to know. Will keep using the cloth. Got mine from Gentech. Will reach out to them this week. If pathway to get more is found, will post here to help others.

Only other general question I have is. How are you all keeping units clean? Just curious if these things are dust magnets. I wipe down quite a bit but anywhere you touch leaves a mark.

Otherwise having a blast with my x7v7.

Thanks again for all the info.

yeah, my cpu requires more voltage....I was just curious if the offset settings varies between different models, due to Bios configurations, etc. Mine runs stable on 4.0GHz only at 1.070V. :(

I've actually moved down to stock clocks even though I was doing fine overclocked after my undervolt. It cost me a few frames but when you're running in the 80s and up to the 120 cap with g-sync it doesn't cost me any lost sleep. Meanwhile my temps went down further and rarely get into the 70s. Frankly I'm loving this lappy, I think this is the first time I can truly say I've got no excuses performance in my backpack that lacks only a large screen to match a dedicated desktop experience.

About those footsies, if you don't mind borrowing from the Clevo boys you can use a wide variety of bump-stops available at the hardware store to get whatever altitude you desire. I attached them with Velcro on my Clevos so they could come on and off as needed although I left mine on most of the time. I was thinking about adding them onto this one because then I could elevate the front a little bit to get more air flow.

Hey guys. Long time lurker in this thread and I'm hoping you guys can give me some guidance. After about a year of searching for a new laptop, I'm fairly certain I've settled on a X5 V7. I just have a few questions before purchasing.

    1. 3K vs 4K - I'm coming from a Macbook Pro with Retina (Glossy 2880x1800) and a Dell XPS 15 4K and both screens are amazing. I like when everything looks crisp and can't stand seeing pixels. For me, high resolution is easier on my eyes since I code 8-10hr a day. I'm fine spending the extra money for 4K but would like to save a few bucks if possible. Should I just pay the extra and go straight to the 4K and skip 3K?

    2. I do a lot of work on the couch with the laptop on my lap. Will I be able to have children in a few years or will this laptop burn off whatever manhood I have left? I do know it will run hotter than my MacBook but is it still comfortable?

    3. The charger is a bit of a brick. Is there something I can buy that is a bit more travel friendly? Not a deal breaker, just curious.

    4. Are there any refreshes coming up or is now a good time to buy?

I'm sure I'll have more questions, but those are the biggest for me at this point. Thanks!

    1. The 3k screen is fairly average as far as IPS screens go, so you may like the 4k more.

    2. It can get pretty hot under load, check Notebookcheck's review.

    3. Not sure

    4. Coffee Lake-H processors are releasing in late March/early April, but I don't know when Aorus will update it's portfolio.

As long as it took for them to release Kaby Lake, I would never recommend waiting. They were so late to the market with these versions.

    1) Largely a personal preference. The potential benefit of the 4k screen, besides the higher density given that your eyes can tell, is that it's a 4x1 scale of 1080. The drawback would be extra power consumption.
    2) I've had no issues, but it will depend, as always on various things including: fan curve (this is the major one), power profile/clocks/voltage, ambient temp, thermal paste/grease application. Also, does 'work' include both cpu & gpu or just cpu?
    3) Yes, I use the razer 165W power brick exclusively at work (no gpu intensive tasks, just heavy cpu); it's probably less than half the size and weight and I've used it for travel (could game on it just fine as well).
    4) I'm not aware of any refreshes that would be 'around the corner.' Like derek mention, Aorus has a bad track record with releasing on time, so even if they did announce it, add another 2-4 months to w/e they claim as the release date. With that said, if you're willing to wait 3-9 months, the refresh should be a good one as it should include a 6 core (12 thread) cpu which should bring appreciable performance improvements for parallelized worksloads

So little update as far as my X5v7 goes. I was having issues with the laptop not booting up properly. And finally got around to recording it and sent that to Gigabyte support.
They are telling me I likely have a faulty motherboard and need to RMA it. Which blows.
The laptop is at the point it will not boot at all. So i cant back up my data, need to crack it open and plug the harddrive and SSD into my desktop to try and get what I need out of it.

    Thanks for the detailed info!

    1. Don't care too much about power consumption. I rarely am ever away from an outlet. If I can get 2hrs just web browsing on battery, I'll be happy. More important is a crisp screen, so I think 4k is the way to go.

    2. "Work" is strictly CPU. I'm a web developer so 90% of it is coding. If there is something I need to render, like a video suitable for web, I usually just put the laptop down somewhere and take a break. GPU usage will be mostly for gaming, which I'll either have it plugged into my 1080p media center projector, or I'll be sitting somewhere I can use a mouse. So, it won't be on my lap.

    3. Awesome, thanks. I'll check it out!

    4. Honestly, I don't think I'm going to wait. It's already been almost a year since I started shopping for a new laptop so it's time to take the plunge. The X5 V7 is already a huge leap up from what I have and, honestly, it's probably overkill. If the refresh is a huge upgrade, I may wait a year or so and then look at upgrading.

    Hi everybody,

    I can get a Gigabyte Aorus X5 V7 (7820HK, 16GB, GTX1070) with the 3K screen for around 1700€. Do you think it's a good deal?

Is the 3K IPS screen good enough to play and work or does it have any issues? I've read some comments in the last pages but I can't decide at all. Anyway I would be buying a bigger screen for using the laptop at home, since I'll be living in Japan for some years.

    Thank you in advance.

Seems a good deal. I paid about 1960 euros for the x7 v7. 3k screen is brilliant and can run all my game's at that resolution.

Thank you benson881. Indeed I'm a bit lost in buying a new laptop. I was pretty much decided to buy the 17,3" MSI GT73 EVR Titan Pro with the GTX1080 and i7 7700HQ for 2200€, but then I started to read that the 7700HQ would probably bottleneck the GTX1080. Therefore, I looked for the same model but with the 7820HK, but it soars up to around 3000€ (it also features more ram and SSD which I don't need at all, or at least not at that high price because I could change it myself). I wouldn't mind paying 2.400€ for that model with the 7820HK and the GTX1080 with same ram and SSD, but 3000€ is probably too much.

After all of this I have started to look for some alternatives with this processor, and besides Alienware I've found this Aorus that looks quite good in general terms. I guess the MSI is better in thermals because of the bigger headsinks, but it is also heavier and once in Japan I will probably have to carry it everyday to the university. I kinda prefer a 17" laptop, but if I got a 15.6" one I could always buy a bigger screen for home and connect the laptop through HDMI.

One of my concerns with the Aorus are temps, and also the problems some of the people here seem to have had. I know any laptop can have a problem, but since it looks so thin I am worried I'm going to suffer from overheating (which probably wouldn't be a problem with the MSI).

    What would you do?

    Thanks!

I went for the aorus because I travelled a lot. Size and weight its brilliant. Coming from a P771dm-g it's lighter and quieter. Thermal are really good. I have undervolted mu cpu and gpu (read a few posts back) I've just ordered some thermal grizzly kryonaut as I always thinks it's worth repasting a factory job.
Speed wise it is rapid. Yeah it's not a 1080 but that's a lot more money and the 1070 is a brilliant card!!!

People who own the aorus x5 v7, how do you like it and are you happy with it? I just got mine in from amazon today and it was already used. It was new in box and I didnt notice that the void seal was pealed up before I cut it open. I plugged it in and turned it on and it logged in automatically to someone elses account. Anyways I contacted amazon about it and they are sending me another one and I return this one when I get the new one. But I have not had much time to mess with it yet. Its still reinstalling windows. Does the laptop get hot? Does the fans ever shut off? Can you hear the HDD spinning all the time? If theres ways to fix this please share. But other that hows the batter life while just web browsing? It seems like a nice built laptop. I will mess with it more when windows is finished. Thanks.

Nothing too significant. Best way to help battery life is undervolting and choosing the most efficient screen option.

Tough call on a screen recommend because it depends on what you're wanting from the lappy. I'm fine without the UHD display, these things come with video cards that are well matched for the lesser screen in terms of pushing frames and it looks great when gaming and in casual viewing. Something not mentioned is that on my X7 I can run a native desktop despite my being old and pathetic and I like not having to deal with scaling issues. I'm not sure that I could do the same with an X5 but I suspect the younger version of myself could have. Perhaps I just like to think so...? :) I can say without question I do know people who would not be happy with it and I do have better screens in the house, the difference is something I notice when switching devices. One other thing that isn't often mentioned, the viewing angles are not all that great but not at all problematic if you are using it in DTR duty. For me the bottom line was to get as much gaming and media consumption as possible in a 17" format that wasn't heavy enough to be a problem in air travel and the 4k screen doesn't benefit me in my use. The decision was easy and having made it I've no regrets about it. I would suggest going down to BB, Costco and having a look at lappies with similar screens in the desired size if you're really on the fence. Maybe you see something that puts you over the edge one way or the other.

It has them already. I swapped mine out but it didn't improve much.

Edit: correction, it has some k5 pro or equivalent already. I swapped with pads.

I got 1mm and .5mm. In a couple places I had to stack them but I can't remember where, of hand. I did it back in Sept.

Just use your best judgement. All that matters is they make contact. There were two spots where I still used k5 since there gap was to big.
