The DT is tempting. Kinda gotten used to large screens over the years hahaha I'll have to see though. Tryin to trade it first. Selling is the final option

On a side note, has your v7 given you any of the issues we've been seeing so far? Like the power cycles, keyboard input issues and the screen banding that was present on the v6?

So far, I haven't seen it on any of my laptops but i haven't used it much ever since I got done with benchmarking it. Sadly, Destiny 2 has become my life as I try to protect Earth from the invaders, lol.

only thing i have done on the laptops is install more RAM, swap NVME to larger one, re-installed W10 a few times and benchmarking. Had no issues as you've have mentioned while working on the laptop.

I finally got around to repasting. Grizzly Conductonaut LM on the CPU and Grizzly Kyronaut on the GPU and heatpipes. Usually this isn't hard for me but this one was kind of a pain in the butt. They use .5mm thermal pads in about 7 different spots and thermal paste on 14 other spots. I replaced the pads with fujipoly and the paste with K5 Pro. It's too early to see how the GPU improves until it cures, but the CPU temps are immediately noticeably better. 3dMark temps are 12C better! I'll update more once the Kyronaut cures, but for now I only got a 2C improvement.

no re paste yet. I think I'm going to let the buyer take care of that but my X5 is repasted with CLU LM. My Dell 27" g-sync monitor came in, so I'm going to keep my x5 due to it being able to fit in my backpack with my work MBP.

The X7 v7 (non-DT) that I returned, looked like that also when you take out the fan / heatsink.

I'll check tonight when i pull my nvme & ram from my X5 and put it back in my X7 DT. The non-DT I returned, didn't have that issue, as I took took out the heatsink to see what was used and repasted afterwards.

Did you test the temps using fixed fan speed or auto?

If its on auto then the difference is larger than 12C which is huge.

So I opened both of my X5 and X7 DT last night and the screws in question were screwed on tight. My X5 was re-pasted by HID and my X7 DT came from NewEgg.

I just received my Aorus x7 v7 and the touchpad doesn't work :( does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get it working? I tried to enable it in the nf + f10 combination, re-installing drivers but no luck. Not sure if I should open up the laptop and check the connection of the touchpad. Can someone show me how it's supposed to show up in device manager? I have a few mouse devices showing up in device manager but not sure if that's it.

Also, since I've upgraded my laptop to 4x16GB (and I still need to post a teardown/upgrade guide; I already have the pics from the teardown, just haven't had time to write up a detailed post), I have my original 2x8GB G.Skill Ripjaws for sale and I'll be posting it in the 'for sale section' but figured I'd mention it here in case anyone wants to upgrade their aorus x5/x7 using the exact same RAM that came with their laptop (if so PM me).

So today I recieved my X5 V7-CF1, just two days of shipping from the UK to Europe mainland. First thing I noticed when opening the lid is that the bezel was being pushed back with my thumb above the webcam. It made a distinct clicking sound, just like the mouse keys. Is this faulty built quality and did anyone else notice it too?

That seems to be the case, I doesn't do it anymore. Though pressing above the screen still results in it flexing. Feels like I need to be careful when opening it up, the spot above the webcam feels like the most sturdy place to hold.

The notebook's casing remains comfortably cool when stress testing, compared to my old HP Elitebook 8570w. The processor is able to maintain 3,6 GHz (stock) under a 30 minute stress testing with XTU, though once overclocked (4 GHz all cores) it shows thermal throttling and temperatures of 95-96 C on all cores. Afterwards I put it through a combined stresstest for both GPU and CPU using Unigine Heaven set to extreme, with a custom resolution of 4k and the processor back to stock clock of 3,9 GHz. This has also resulted in thermal throttling, while the CPU maintained its clock of 3,6 GHZ, it did reach up to 97 C within 15-20 minutes, after which I discontinued testing. The system was on 100% load during the last test for CPU and GPU.
Is this something to worry about, or would you guys say that this is usual for this system?

While typing this I noticed several keys light up, even though the backlight has been disabled (set to green, but shows blue on pause/break, right shift, # and left arrow while sometimes also highlighing the escape to control row in red for some reason). For the keyboard I don't have problems with Ctrl + Shift + arrow key or Z, though the f key did not always register properly (twice).

Thermals are inline with what I had, though I'm curious if you were on normal, gaming, or 100% fan profile. I would almost not expect it to reach thermal throttle at 3.6 GHz with fans at 100%, but perhaps that was the case because you had not only the CPU but also the GPU at 100% whereas when I did 100% testing I did them individually since it's difficult to come up with a scenario where both the CPU and GPU would ever be used at 100%.
With that said, when I undervolted and and changed the thermal paste I did see significant temp decreases (CPU at 4.3GHz, 4.0GHz across all cores with -75mV doesn't thermal, voltage, nor current throttle)

Love the laptop but hate the keyboard layout, it feels so small and crowded. I've always like how MSI uses SteelSeries as their keyboard on their laptops.

My testing was with the gaming profile, so I'm not sure whether it reached max fan speed.

ya, that makes sense; if you instead ran the fans at 100% I doubt you'd hit thermal max for CPU (the gaming mode favors the GPU's temps, so as long as they're in-check it's fine with the CPU getting throttled)

I previously said that the touchpad was just "OK" when it came to responsiveness and tracking. I've since switched to using Windows Precision drivers instead of ELAN's and what a difference. The trackpad is now awesome for the following reasons:
    1) Far more responsive and tracking, I would say on par with my 2017 MBP.
    2) Windows touchpad gestures
    3) Separate mouse pointer velocity/speed between the mouse and the touchpad.

Can you provide a link to the windows precision driver you used? I have also been thinking about swapping drivers, so that's good to hear.

There seems to be a bug in the Aorus Fusion software as the macro profiles do not stick with their assigned program. After switching profiles it is immediately erased.

Ok, so to update to Windows Precision Drivers:
    1) Download the ELAN drivers from here (Lenovo): https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/r0hgf07w.exe
    2) Extract the download somewhere (default C:/Drivers is fine and you can delete it later, but you do you)
    3) Open Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices
    4) Right click on ELAN Input Device > Right Click > Update Driver > Browser Computer > Let me pick > Have Disk > Browse > {yourInstallDir}/WIN/UNAV/ETD.inf > OK > Next > Yes > Close (once finished)
    5) Reboot (after reboot your touchpad will "work" for about 15sec then it will stop)
    6) Open Device Manager > Other Devices > ELAN Miniport PTP Device > Right Click > Update Driver > Browse Computer > Next

At this point it should install automatically the extra driver and your touchpad will immediately start working with all the windows 10 gestures. You can go back and delete the extracted driver files now.

Does anyone know what size the spinning 2.5" HD is in the x5 v7? What I mean is, what thickness drive is it? There are 2.5" drives up to 15+mm thick but I'm not sure how thick will fit in the laptop? I'm trying to figure out what most storage I could fit in the laptop is.

    TIA.

15mm is a little excessive. If you stick with 11mm and under, you should be fine. The original drive is 9.5 mm

you probably wont be able to stick anything thicker than a 11mm drive in there and that still may cause a small bulge on the palm rest. Think if you want the most storage, it would still be filling up all the M.2 slots and using the 4TB Samsing SSD in the drive bay

Hey guys. I'm have a few questions about the X5 v7 and the X7 v7? I was looking to get a new laptop, but ruled out Aorus because of my poor experience with the X3 with a 970m over a year ago. My two main problems with that laptop was the keyboard and the build quality. The keyboard on the X3 felt cheap. The keys wobbled and felt hollow. Honestly I thought they were the worst I've ever used. and the screen when I opened it seemed really flimsy.

Are the keyboards and build more robust on the larger X5 and X7 models?

Yea the previous keywords were downright bad. They have improved quite a bit. I've had the chance to test some older Aorus versions at my reseller and the difference in quality is quite clear. My X7v6 keyboard is holding up well. No flex when gaming or typing on it. The V7 should have improved on it by merging the upper deck and keyboard together whereas on the v6 it would be a seperate unit like on Clevo laptops

I certainly know how you feel because I went through the exact same thing - I had a bad experience with Aorus at first and it took years to get over it. Short answer is yes, the keyboard and lid are better on the x5 and x7 than they were on the old x3. I wrote a review on the x3 plus a few years ago and you can definitely see how my opinion has changed.

    https://www.ultrabookreview.com/5205-gigabyte-aorus-x3-plus-review/
    https://www.ultrabookreview.com/17477-aorus-x7-dt-v7-review/

The build quality certainly has room to improve, but it's far better than it used to be.

Oh thank god. Lol. I was really sad when I sent my X3 back because I could not stand the keyboard. I wanted to love it as it had extra room for an extra m.2 drive and was easy to open for repasting. Is there a big size difference between the X5 and X7? Since you make it sound like you've had hands on with both?

That's encouraging as that's exactly how I feel. It was hyped up so much as being a Razer Blade killer. . .and it wasn't even close in terms of build quality.

And you really did change your mind on the Aorus brand. How many models have you had a chance to use?

What's the matter with Red? :p

Tbh i really didnt see that the X7 was that much bigger compared to the X5. Ive only seen the both of them side by side once so take it for what you will. I still find the X7 perfectly portable and a nice size for my desk and mind you i do not have a lot of room on it

I took a quick look at the offical specs and the X7 is roughly 1.5 wider and an inch deeper. So nothing major. Gonna have to think about that as the X7 Might have more heat pipes than the X5 for cooling. Off to find some tear down videos.

Also, i belive the X5 has more heatpipes to compensate for its smaller internal volume and thickness of the frame and the heatpipes themselves

The x7 v6 was the first one I tried since the x3+. Loved it but the v7's came out right after I bought the v6 so I returned it and got the x7 MD. Then I got the x7 v7 DT instead. I liked the x5 MD form factor but the performance wasn't enough the justify the price. Really you can't go wrong with the 1070 versions on either machine.

My offer still stands - if anyone has the blue trackpad on the x7 and wants a red one, I will gladly trade. :)

That's ok I found some inside shots of the units. I like how easy they are to open up for maintenance. Either one seems good and it's more down to the specs I ultimately decide on. So how much did the Thermal Grizzly help the temps on your laptop? I've always used IC Diamond, but that's because that's what I tried many years ago with good results and just stuck with it over the years.

See I'm honestly one of the few people it seems that likes the Max Q laptops. Yes I know it's a price premium performance wise, but I like the idea of a quieter laptop. So paying for the privilege to have a quieter gaming experience is something I'm considering.

I'll paint your trackpad blue for a nickle. :D

This brings my search up too six laptops now. . .ugh.

    Aorus x7 DT V7
    Aorus X7 V7
    Aorus X5 MD
    Aorus X5 V7
    Acer Triton 700
    Asus Zephyrus

Choice is nice, but there are so many options. . .lol

I'd pick the Zephyrus over the MD any day. The problem with the MD us the v7(1070 version) performs the same or better in some scenarios. What's the point in paying more.

The only real reason I found is that the Zephyrus is a nightmare to take apart in you want to upgrade the SSD or reapply better thermal compound. But, yeah it's hard to justify the price premium if someone else has a cheaper option.

Plus the zephyrus is damn sexy looking. . .not that really matters. lol

Is the zephyrus as quiet as Nvidia makes them out to be with the whole Max q is super quiet and efficient thing?
