The X5 V7 review from XoticPC shows temps of up to 50 degrees near the GPU. If you can get that down a notch, it will give the CPU an easier time te maintain somewhat cooler. As for 3D modelling, (which is why I try to get my hands of one) the CPU will be on load and the GPU shouldn't have to do all that much. I am also planning to undervolt the CPU by roughly -50mV (safe margin) for the same purpose of reducing temps to maintain high clocks for a longer amount of time.

Doesnt afterburner give you the voltage curve to play with?

It does. I ended up using that but didn't get any significant improvement as far as performance. There is a little undervolt room but it's more trouble than it's worth if you ask me.

The "safe margin" for undervolting the CPU varies by CPU, you need to experiment to tune for it.

Some CPU's will undervolt as low as -220mV, some only -20mV, with a large number somewhere around -100mV to -150mV.

You will crash if the undervolt is too far, but the only way to find that point is to set it and crash, then back off +10mV and try again, and again if necessary.

The last test will be idle stability, as that is where the CPU will undervolt itself - and that's where the idle crash happens - adjust again by +5mV and let it idle again.

It's easy to do with XTU / TS when you have time to test, and otherwise switch to a Default profile with stock settings when you need to work or game seriously - when you don't want to chance a crash.

Over time you can try again, say after a few months - or 6 months if you don't have much free time for testing. I've taken a -15mV max CPU all the way to -50mV gradually over 18 months. So there is headroom to gain over time.

And, above all, it's supposed to be fun, so enjoy it while you can :)

It wil be my first time playing around with XTU and I don't plan on pushing it all the way as I don't ever want to open up my laptop and do the CMOS reset. I guess that the trick is to have the undervolt disabled on boot.

As for tinkering with the voltage curve on the CPU, there seem to be two methods: OC on low voltage and lowering the clocks on high voltage. I am not sure which one to use in order to get a "max q" 1070. The only time I need to use the gpu to the fullest would be for rendering 3ds max models with it.

I'll be ordering my X5 tomorrow, hope it turns out to be a good choice to import one.

How did you manage to undervolt the GPU?
I tried with MSi AfterBurner and its grayed out

You can´t really undervolt in the traditional sense, what you can do is lock the maximum voltage used with the voltage frequency curve in AB.

How are the screens on these x5 v7s? Seems like the same issue with my old x3 v3. It's a weird resolution and really unnecessary. I wish I could just put a good 1080 in it. Big part of the reason I'm not considering the x3 again is because of it.

Now to find a buyer for my Aorus X5 v7 since I plan to stick with the DT.

    Ummmmm.

I've seen the X5V6 do within 600 points with the cpu at 4Ghz.

Pretty good stuff. Think you can still squeeze out more through manual overclocking of the GPU.

I mean Misjah and i managed to get within 600 points of that with a 6820HK and a 1070 sooooo....maybe there still is more to squeeze out

GPU on the X7 DT V7 needs more power to handle a decent OC best I can get mine is 150 core. one point more its unstable.

Yeah, i think there is a little more room for improvement.

With Destiny 2 being live today, time to put the laptop on hold while I go PEW PEW. Any Destiny 2 players here? I'm on the PS4 until PC is released.

@RMXO perhaps use XTU/Throttlestop for the CPU and either MSI Afterburner or Nvidia Inspector for the GPU. Yields much better results when compared to the C&C software. Idk if this is true, but i've heard that on the V7 lineup, the clock speed step increases (speed increases between lvl 1 and lvl 2 etc) in the C&C have been reduced from the V6

    Best 3dmark was 17k at 22700 GPU.

Do note that if something happens due to overclocking with these programs, that Aorus claims that it voids the warranty (I asked using their customer service).

This is the opposite of my experience. I asked the UK rep and a Taiwanese rep about an unlocked bios to overclock the CPU and was advised to use third party tools, checked about oc'ing the GPU was advised it was fine to use nvidia inspector.

I used XTU to UV but C&C for the rest. Down the road I might consider using other programs to OC but right now I'm ok with it. I rather spend my time playing games then trying to find the correct OC though in my younger yrs I wouuld of done it once i got my laptop.

I remember having read that, therefore it kinda puzzled me that they gave me such a formal answer. Might have been bad luck with who answered me then lol. It certainly is strange considering the unlocked CPU. Ofcourse pushing the device to it's limits is something that could void warranty, however I specifically asked about tinkering with the voltage curve in afterburner ro underclock (can't break GPUs as far as I'm aware). Can you do that in inspector too?

Anyways I don't buy the factory optimisation story as everyone has slightly different needs and wishes.

Strange you got a different response.

I don't think you can undervolt (anyone correct me if I'm wrong) with nvidia inspector.

Can you increase the voltage with afterburner using the ctrl+f?

That's a first then, I've seen a screenshot of the X7 a few pages back in this thread. It does look like you can lower clocks and voltage with the sliders, I wonder how big the effect is on heat output.

For those with the x5 v7 that haven't updated to the latest BIOS EC (FB0E/F00A), can you let me know what version you're on and if you have the ability to toggle sleep states (S4 in particular) in your bios? I thought I saw this option in the BIOS before moving up. I use hibernation to switch between two OSes on two separate drives, but currently on my x5, when I hibernate it skips the POST options to choose drive (F12) or enter BIOS (F2), so I'm wondering if disabling S4 state (hibernation) in the BIOS would help. (I can still do what I want by turning off the machine right after turning it on after hibernating and starting it again, aka power-cycling it, but this adds another ~15 seconds to switching OSes, and makes it more 'hands-on')

When I press power, power light comes on. Fans spin, for about 15 seconds.
Then it shuts off again. Gonna be pretty upset if I have to rma it

    Newest bios..No post.
    It came back on finally.
But first I had to make it really unhappy.

I closed the lid on my hand and held the power button while opening it. That made it do the power cycle thing for only about 3 second. Then I interrupted that by holding power button right when it started on another cycle to try and shut it down.

    Booted after that.

So, it is a reoccurring problem it seems. Every time I close the lid or use start>shutdown.
when i come back to use it, I press the power button, The power button lights up. 3 seconds later the fans spin up. 15 seconds after that, everything shuts down again. And without me touching anything, it all starts over. The laptop display never turns on during this time.

So far I have been holding the power button to interrupt this little process to get it to remain off. Then I tap the power button and cross my fingers. When it fails to work. I start the process all over....

Seems like it's some sort of power/wake up issue. Do you have the laptop set to sleep or hibernate when closing the lid? Does the issue occur when you shut it down?
Also, contact Aorus in case you haven't yet

That's my thinking too; "shut down" in windows is no longer a clean shut down by default like it use to be, but it instead hibernates the kernel; try disabling 'Turn on fast startup' and see what happens.

I think I got it handled.
I think it was a Windows update issue. The laptop kept trying to update at bad times. So I regedit using a tutorial to make it ask me first. I think it was like halfway done with an update or something when it died( unbeknownst to me). After I actually got to my desktop. I checked all my drivers and let Windows finally do is update. And now it's behaving normally again.

I have both a X7 DT and X5 v7, i plan to sell one of them. I would prefer to sell the X5 but i can sell the X7 DT if needed be. Its brand new, only used to do benchmarks.
