You're right, a careless LM application is more likely to cause issues with a package with nearby components. Then again I'd rather have a decent paste (like kryonaut) instead of LM applied by someone else. I take my laptop everywhere and have never had an issue with the LM application.

Does a repaste void the warranty? My retailer didn't have it as an option, but I have noticed the CPU can get extremely hot in this machine (90c) under stress! I'm pretty keen on getting the CPU repasted if it'll cut me down 10 degrees, that said, I don't want to void the warranty.

The warranty is void after repasting.
    Some people ask questions...

So is it really worth doing in that case? A 2 year warranty is pretty significant...

Is that accurate? Dell doesn't void your warranty with a repaste unless you caused damage when doing so.

If you repaste and you get a damaged cpu or gpu, maybe months later, they will always tell you the repaste was the cause for the damage.

Retailers will, under most circumstances, warranty their work if an issue pops up. The three that I've mentioned in my posts all offer the same guarantee.

Well, I broke down. I honestly cannot tolerate having to wait two months for this laptop. I went ahead and bought the 15w instead. I figure that the 25% bump in performance is, in my opinion, worth the extra $300 but isn't worth having to wait as long as we have for the product. If the 1060 doesn't get it done, I can always hook up a Sonnet breakaway box with something beefy in the future.

Yeah - don’t blame you. I was getting ready to do the same but I don’t need a laptop right now. I actually just got a work laptop so, I was thinking of even doing a larger Aorus X7 V7 since I will primarily just be using the laptop at home when I’m on the couch or bed or some infrequent traveling. Have a desktop PC so this is just an extra.

How bad would it be to have a 17in on a lap desk to game with? Still like the idea of the lightness and size of the aero 15x

In stock January 5th? Wow glad I got mine when I did. Wondering why the shortage though.

    Came across this review

    And another nice read
    https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/review/laptops/gigabyte-aero-15x-review-3668604/
Still no regrets not getting the additional repaste. I'm comfy with the 2 year guarantee and will probably be looking for something new in two or three years anyway. I've had laptops that burned skin and melted the LCD frame from overheating but never gave out.

It seems the reviewed unit has also suffered from "chattering" issue mentioned few pages back.
I wonder how chronic is this.

Guys, the keyboard problem still not solved?

Btw, LinusTech said he wants to see G-Sync next time?
AFAIK, G-sync means no Optimus... which means lower battery life.

As an additional option, that wouldn't be too bad. As a sole option? No way.
    I'd rather see a 120Hz display.

It is a headscratcher that Linus would praise the battery life, then call for a 120Hz Gsync screen. Surely he knows better? Maybe there was an additional comment about Nvidia needing to get their idle power consumption down for Volta, but it was cut from the final video?

So, I apparently can't make up my mind. I canceled my Aero 15w order and got back in line for the 15X. Ted at HID has been super helpful and hasn't (yet) gotten fed up with me. Reason for the indecisiveness? Well, something for the 15w was on backorder (I don't know what, maybe the ram) so the difference in delivery between the two would probably be at most like a week or 10 days. Even with some of the minor problems others are encountering with this laptop, I haven't seen anything else on the market that comes close in performance or portability; the key being a combination of the two.

I'm thinking of getting one but I'm still hesitating because I can't find the laptop with the right keyboard layout. Asked their support and I was told there isn't enough demand to make it.

Could anyone take pictures of the keyboard and of what's under the keys? I'm thinking that I might make the right keys myself if it is possible...

Alrighty, I'm going to start a full experience review beginning with the pre-order process with HID.

    Timeline:
11/16 - Pre ordered Aero 15X, status is Pending Review
12/06 - Cancelled original order and ordered Aero 15w
12/12 - Updated Aero 15w order to Aero 15X, upgrade to Rush service, status is Pending Review

    Impressions so far:
Ted K. has been patient and helpful, especially given that I was sort of wishy washy over the unit in question. He has answered his direct line nearly every time I've called and has always been professional concerning my questions or concerns. The range of options available to the consumer at HID, specifically for customization and modification, is impressive. As it stands, my only complaint is with Gigabyte in not having enough units to meet demand. I'm sure they would argue this is a good thing. Tomorrow is when more units are scheduled to come in, I have my fingers crossed that they receive enough for me to get one too.

I will post updates for those interested. If you have any specific questions about the laptop and would like me to run benchmarks, fiddle with the keyboard, post pictures of BLB, please let me know. To VHug, I intend to look closely at the right shift key as all the units I've seen (be it 15w or 15X) seem to be dimmer than the rest. I don't know if its an alignment issue with the LED or some sort of manufacturing defect with the key itself but I'll take pictures of the whole layout when mine gets in.

Final thought and request from other members here; what's the turn around on a rush build with HID?

I dunno, XOTIC just informed me that their shipment scheduled for end of November didn’t come through and now there’s no “ETA” on this machine. I was supposed to have the first shipment back in November, but my unit had a superficial issue (something with the casing). Apparently they sent that laptop Gigabyte to to get fixed and now it’s in transit back to XOTIC for the mods. Not sure how I feel about that type of transaction but, from what I’ve seen online, I think these are most likely delayed until beginning to mid January.

    Mine arrived today.
Backlight bleed is only really noticable when you are in a pitch black room on a completely dark screen. My XPS has way more bleeding.
Screen is alright. I'm not a proffesional but XPS seems way nicer to look at. No contest.
Build quality seems solid...except for that screen hinge. The screen is quite wobbly when adjusting it. I imagine it will be a pain using this on the road or plane. But i kinda knew that from the reviews out there.
All in all, some trade-offs were made for the 1070, but i'm happy in the exchange.
I won't have time to use this for a week but if anyone has questions or wants to see benchmarks or whatever, i'll answer next week.

Just got mine today from MA as well via Amazon. Coming from a Razer Blade, which I have used for the last 3 years. Keyboard is taking some getting used to, but alll else is really good. I must have gotten lucky on the hinge as it doesnt seem so wobbly as Ive seen in some review videos. Love the no bezel look. Its only marginally larger and heavier than the 14inch Blade, so fits my needs. I had looked at the Asus, but too big. Downloading benchmarks now and will be adding 960 1TB drive from Razer to this.

Edit: This computer would have been unreal with a 1440P display or 120hz G-Sync (yes, I know, tradeoffs)

So, word on the street is that Nvidia is holding out Max-Q chips for larger manufacturers; Gigabyte isn't a big enough player against MSI or ASUS. Apparently, they have a bunch of MBs waiting in Taiwan for GPUs but no stock to finish them. Mid-January is the earliest they'll have those units completed.

Had the same problem. Smart Manager changed to Chinese all of a sudden, version 7.0.5.

Worked for me. The download site provides 7.0.1. Windows Defender put the contained DeepFan.exe in quarantine (Trojan:Win32/Tilken.B!cl). Strange.

Hiya guys! Recently picked up a 15X and currently typing on it!
Was wondering if you guys feel a clean install is recommended to remove all the bloatware in this pc?
Looking at the number of apps in the desktop upon first start up gives me anxiety haha.
Also, does anyone feel that the trackpad is pretty bad in terms of small cursor movements? I've installed the recommended windows precision drivers from D2D youtube videos but i still feel like they are really bad.

I don't feel there is much bloatware. Maybe deinstalling the few programs you don't like might be the easier way. Smart Manager is needed for easy access to special functions like the Pantone color calibration, Fusion for the RGB keyboard.
However, don't forget to back-up your display color profile in "C:\Program Files\Display Profiles" before any clean install.

Feels the same way for me, also with precision drivers. Slow movements use some even slower speed, followed by a sudden upshift for faster movements.

My Aero 15x just came in. Seems pretty solid so far coming from a Razer Blade 14. The only thing that was a shocker was the power brick. I think my keyboard is doing the double input thing, which is annoying though.

Does anyone have issues connecting your mic through the headphone/mic jack? My mic refuses to be detected, not sure if its a driver issue.
Separate issues aside, does anyone know how to update the audio drivers with the files directly from gigabyte websites? Im trying to redownload the audio drivers and it says...
"Realtek High Definition Audio (need to work with Smart ManagerV3)".
Not sure how SmartManager controls downloads, but SmartUpdate doesnt show me the latest version of the driver that is available for download.
    Thanks!

It's a 'combined audio jack'. You need a splitter cable when using regular headphones and mics.

I'm sure if you go into the Realtek audio manager, you should be able to find an option to switch between headphones and headset. Using headset allows you to use the mic as well.

Yes, if you have a device with speakers and mic in one, you can just go to Realtek's application and select 'headset' at the port settings. If your device is only a mic you have to use an splitter or an external USB audio device.

You could also just use the mic with the speakers by choosing the option to show both the headphone jack and speakers as two separate outputs rather than the default switch between the two. This allows you to connect your mic and still use the speakers as playback. With the default setup, plugging in your mic will mute the speakers.

    Hello guys,
Just to share with you some tweak I made on this awesome laptop.
I didn't had time yet to deeply check the stability of those settings (via more benchmarks and stress test) but I'm sure that I've still fine-tuning headroom to improve perf.
FSB: 102.8MHz ; stable until now (freeze above) giving me an extra ~100MHz on CPU clock.
CPU undervolt: -140mv ; still got headroom to go lower.
GPU: I applied + 220MHz on core and +100 on Vram ; 3Dmark11 crash at +250MHz core, but I'm sure it's reachable by fine-tuning voltage curve. [IMG]
