@sanyex - how loud is it at idle and at load? Notebookcheck indicated that it was quite bad in those aspects.

No sound at all in idle (deactivate the fans) but pretty loud under load.. I recommend headphones or undervolting + repasting (Not with liquid Metal!)

Have you undervolted or repasted? If yes, what sort of improvement is there in fan noise?

Gallium Based stuff will alloy with your copper (or especially with aluminium) heatsinks and you have to reapply it again after a few months.. this will damage the heatsink over time. Grizzly kryonaut on the other Hand could be good. But this is just my opinion. Use whatever you want.

I undervolted the cpu 0.150mv and dropped 5-7°C i had to adjust the fan curve to get it a Bit quieter

Thanks for the info. What temperatures do your CPU and GPU reach during heavy load? Notebookcheck indicated that the GPU got pretty hot under it's stress test. Is that the same for you?

The Witcher 3 Maxed out - but no hairworks - 70-88 fps - 72°C GPU Temperature - 78°C CPU+GPU Package Temperature. (Ambient temperature is a bit higher today) I will change the thermal paste in the next few weeks with Grizzly Kryonaut or Gelid extreme - dont use Liquid Metal :p Btw: MSI Afterburner shows me PWR Limit all the time, but i dont drop any FPS or have microstuttering

Has anyone tried this? Screenshot_20180413-075619_Gallery.jpg Screenshot_20180413-075633_Gallery.jpg
Trying this on my Aero 15x "old" version. So far no problems, but never really had big problem with repeating keystrokes.
On first pic I chose keyboard settings. Second pic I reduced the sliders.

    I got 2 aero 15 non-x's (1060), ~1400$ each from amazonn.
They came with the thin 150W + usb port adapters. The 1060s in both have samsung GDDR5. Haven't tried overclocking or undervolting yet.

These laptops are super nice but the quality control is lacking.

Unit #1 has severe keyboard chattering issues with the spacebar, E key, C key, R key, T, U, Z, probably others, and the S key gets stuck frequently.
Unfortunately some repeated keystrokes happen up to 150ms apart so I would need to set the chattering app threshold to 150ms, which interferes with typing.
Keyboard firmware update did not help at all.
The filter keys/bounce keys/registry hack posted earlier didn't work well for me because it blocks the ability to hold down a key (like backspace).
I also did a fresh install of windows 10 on unit #1 and smart manager is now broken. Whenever I try to open smart manager the screen just flickers briefly and the UI never shows up. Tried several versions of smart manager (via gigabyte's website and via the smart updater which took overnight) and it still does not open.
If you do a fresh install of windows on these laptops, your **** will be ****ed.

Unit #2 also has some keyboard chattering issues: C, F, O, N, maybe some others - but not nearly to the same extent. Maybe once per paragraph vs once per sentence like in unit #1.
It may even be usable with the chattering app.

    Good things:
    1. Great speakers: The notebookcheck review made these laptops seem like they have horrible bass-less speakers. This is easily fixed with some software tuning. I installed breakaway audio enhancer (directsound) and maxed the bass boost & shape sliders, then set the windows equalizer/bass boost setting (depending on whether you have the realtek driver installed) to amplify ~300Hz.

    2. Very quiet while browsing the web. Fans are even adjustable if you can get smart manager to work (good luck if you clean install windows)

    Bad things:
    1. The keyswitches gigabyte uses in these things are straight garbage. The chattering on the keyboards is a mechanical issue caused by the awful switches. Whatever the hell gigabyte is putting into the keyboard firmware updates isn't doing anything about the chattering. Expect it to happen in the new hex-core v8 since they seem to be using the same.

    2. The Chi mei panel in these are also poor overclockers. They will hit 63Hz max at LCD-standard timings and not an inch more. Very disappointing. Does anyone know if it's possible to swap out the display?

Even if you do find one the price will be around 2k. At least that was what I had seen. It might've been newegg that had the 7th gen 15x the same price as the 8th gen v8 aero 15.

Hi all... I'm on the same boat.. Expecting to receive this laptop on Wednesday. I already have my Windows 10 USB ready for a clean install... after which I wonder what should I install from the Gigabyte support download section? the drivers and Gigabyte's Smart Manager only? (at least that's what I've read searching around)... perhaps the Elan drivers for getting a better touchpad too...

I'll be happy to hear from you guys.... Thanks...

Kinda hesitating to buy the new v8 aero.

I feel like they'll release an upgrade later this year with new GPUs.

Could also try liquid metal and slight overclocking on the GPU clock maybe? Doesn't sound like a great idea though.

I would advice to install the following drivers from smart update, and let windows install all the other drivers (blue highlighted), good luck!:

Thanks!!! this is what I was looking for!

One other question.. I plan on repasting after first getting a readout of the default thermals.... (No LM for me, yet!?!)... for disconnecting the battery from the board (I guess this is step #1), do I need to take the whole battery out? I have found several videos of the current Aero 15 model, but I can't seem to get a clear perspective about this....

    Best regards,

    Carlos

I am just curious that why you want to reinstall the new clean windows?

Are these Gigabyte bloatwares really such annoyed or slow down the system?

No, there is not really that much gigabyte bloatware, and windows on these devices are pretty clean.
For me it felt that the clean windows was a little less sluggish and buggy than the pre-installed windows. But the difference wasn't a lot.
I personally just like a clean installed version, something that is mentally-satisfying I think. :D

The laptop comes with W10 Home if you didn't select W10 Pro. No noticeable difference but Home doesn't support BitLocker encryption as Pro does. I'm probably missing a few others or so.

That's what I'm thinking - the current GPUs have been around for some time no? Certainly the GTX 1060, and the 1070 Max-q isn't much different (25% better max?)

Fairly old architecture now I believe - that's been around for 2 years?

So waiting a few months for the latest architecture that should see quite a performance improvement makes sense I think.

Been meaning to upgrade my laptop for years though, heh. But the Aero 15x was delayed/not available then discontinued - now refreshed with v8, but may as well wait for the new GPU now.

I was trying to find out how often Gigabyte refresh, but they seem to do it for each new CPU and GPU release - so fairly often.

I just hope a Max-q version doesn't come later than the non max q. Having said that, a new non Max q will likely outperform this I think, or perform as well with better thermals.

they really should have update the thermal solution with this refresh, according to notebookcheck, the v8 cannot really handle the new 8750h and you will have to live with 50dB+ fan noise when gaming, when the v7 is around low 40ish

Can anyone explain why LM is not the preferred thermal paste solution for the 15X? I understand some parts of its chassis is aluminum but isn't the heat sink cooper? Also didn't iunlock get amazing results using LM with the previous iterations of Aero models? It does'nt really seem like they changed their cooling solution and from what we've seen in the past the heat sink responds well to LM application versus the other thermal paste. I placed an order with HID for the V8 and chose LM on both GPU/CPU and now I'm worried lol

liquid metal is good in the first few months.. then it starts to alloy with the copper - it is basicly a battery with the gallium and the copper.. gallium particles will slowly start to merge with the copper and this can change the great heat transfering properties of copper... so you have to repaste it after a year give or take (have fun with cleaning that up first) and after 2-3 repastes.. well you know what i mean right? oh and LM in a laptop could be a bad idea anyway because you move it alot around and if you applied just a bit too much it could get on the mobo and short it. i will get grizzly kryonaut tomorrow and repaste the v8 with that.

Just did a 3d-Mark run if anyone wants to compare the temps or whatever:

I've had LM applied for around 6 months, so I would definitely want to get it removed if I want to keep this laptop for a long time.

Can you explain the undervolting process? Never done it before and those temps look a lot better.
