Saw the review this morning. Its confirmed, the 1080 in the DT is not performing as it should be. 15k in firestrike is very odd

Edit: Though i'm not complaining about the low lead temps hahaha. But the fan noise tho....

Yea seems like the X7 V6 with the 1070 is the best bang for the buck. At least for the time being.

If the Aorus does not have the BIOS issues with the Clevo P6X0 series, then undervolting the CPU on all the Aorus machines will net pretty good temps. 90 degrees plus on notebookcheck's X5 and X7 reviews are a bit concerning

I'm also not sure most would be able to justify $400 for just under 900 points difference on fire strike.

Agreed. Which model X7 did you order? My two local resellers oddly only have the X7V6 1080p variant

I went with the X7 V6 PC3K4D with the 1440p 120hz panel. Ordered it from HIDevolution and had a great experience. Hopefully I'll get it in the next week and a half.

Looks to be the case nearly all the time hahaha. I mean, crack it open, give it a good ol repaste with some good compound and push a bit of an OC and you got yourself a "cheap" top of the line chip

A Swedish retailer claim to have a special version of the Aorus X7 V6 that has a Blu Ray driver built in which I am highly doubtful about, what do you say?

have a pro v6 on the way tonight, and an alienware 13 r3 supposedly arriving next week. going to play with them both and decide wchich to keep. I currently have a Graphics Amplifer and a 1080 GTX to also try on the alienware. Want to compare scores, heat, battery life, display quality, etc. I've already had the OLED 13 r2 so know its gorgeous, gonna have to see if the extra screen real-estate and 120hz is worth it.

Doubt that. There is no room in that chassis to house a drive. Perhaps they are just throwing in an external and have it labeled wrong.

How are the screens on the X7 models, are they matte? If so, are they as bad as the 4K matte screens Alienware has for their latest generation that are really grainy/muddy. I have a X7 Pro (v3) with a FHD screen and on that the whites are really white and not grainy, even though the screen itself is not blank, are the current generation similar to that? Mainly interested in the QHD version, if not for any other reason based on the fact that its the only one on sale in Sweden.

So, is there consensus regarding that the X7 DT V6 doesn't offer anything than marginally better GPU performance with the 1080 instead of the 1070 in the non DT version? All reviews seem to indicate that there are some kind of throttling going on with the 1080 here.

That's what everything I'm seeing indicates. It would be interesting to see what it does with a 330W power supply, but I'm guessing thermal limits would be hit quickly.

Considering the difference in size compared to other brands like MSI, Alienware etc. I guess it's really not all that surprising if the chassi limits the amount of heat that it can handle. Are there any other reasons to consider the DT version? AFAIK the GPU is the only difference between them.

Don't really know if i should take those two reviews in to account, especially their temp reports. I live in a pretty hot and humid country so temps are very crucial to me.

Edit: Hopefully using the default OC settings in their OC utility, undervolting and using liquid metal paste or something like Kryonaut and GC Extreme will help

I ordered from HIDevolution with CLLU and IC Diamond. It will be interest to see what the out of the box temps are. My first focus will be undervolting and seeing what I can do with the temps. Im not worried about performance at all.

Definitely no overclocks for me on this laptop. Shame though, my 970M on my current 150SM-A barebones was a lovely chip to overclock. But then again, i'll be getting the 1080p 75hz display. Hopefully G sync or Fast Sync wont push the GPU to its full power. My country's currency dropped hard so the 1440p version will be killer expensive. Huhuhu

Ah ha. A review that talked about the screen striping issue. Interesting how AUO said that it is a by-product of the manufacturing process

I'm looking forward to a review of the x5 with this screen to see if it's got the same stripping issue as the 120Hz on the x7, as I believe both of them are made by AOU. I'm hoping that it won't be the case since that's the panel I'm leaning towards, but I think the odds are not favorable.

Looking at the XoticPC reviews 2 things seem apparent:

    1. Despite having the same specs, the X5 V6 has lower performance than the X7 V6, most likely due to some kind of throttling/thermal management.
    2. The fan noise is actually worse on the X7 which surprised me considering the X7 has a bigger chassis and also more fan intakes on the top.

    Any comments?

Agreed on your first point. Apparently, the X5 comes with a 200w adapter. The X7 has a 230w. Thermal management from both systems is generally quite good considering their thin form factor. I personally think that due to the -5's lower capacity adapter, the is not enough juice going to the components therefore limiting performance. The X7 has extra headroom with the 230w. Also, perhaps take in to account that the benchmarks were probably done with the level 4 overclock setting in the aorus utility. I would think that using it at its lowest, which is honestly still a lot of power, will result in better temps and lower fan noise. You'll probably get less with Fast Sync or G Sync enabled. Just my two cents. Feel free to add on to this. :)

Edit: check out firestrike scores for the X7 DT too. Then compare them to the regular X5 and X7. That is the result of using a small capacity adapter on powerful hardware

I hope they aren't made by them considering the striping issue on their panels not just on the Aorus models but also Alienware and Clevo too. Perhaps they should have used the Chi Mei panel that is used on the GS73 Stealth's 120hz screen. That was pretty good for a TN panel.

Does anyone with this laptop know what torx screws are on the back? aka which size screwdriver is needed to remove the back panel?

I've been reading up on Conductonaut liquid metal thermal compound. Seems like the slightly-better-performing CoolLaboratories Liquid Ultra. This thing is reporting huge temp drops. The Aorus x7 v6 thermal issues seem to be isolated to the CPU more than the GPU. Reviewers are saying the 90+ temps are on the CPU. Which makes sense if Aorus sells it OC'd to 4.0ghz
I plan to test stock temps. Hopefully we'll get a temp reading from the guys ordering off HIDEvolution with the CLLU. Then re-paste and see how the temps do vs stock.

I haven't received the laptop yet, so i'm still trying to understand the OC capabilities with shortcuts. The reviews I read had it clocked at 4.0... isn't that the default OC from factory?

If I recall correctly from the reviews, the Aorus OC software provides the range of 3.6GHz (stock) to 4.0 for boost clocks. The reviewer machines came in already set to 4.0GHz, but regular consumer laptops should come at 3.6GHz, which you can then bump up if you have the need.

At stock clocks (3.6), I haven't seen the CPU temp in my X7 V6 reach the 90's, (mid 80's seems to be average full load). When overclocked at 4ghz and using the Intel XTU, I saw a max CPU temp of 94-95.
Also I believe there is somewhat of a quality issue regarding the stock heat paste. With the temps I just stated, that was on a single core only, the remaining 3 cores were around 10 degrees colder across the board.

Even a repaste with your typical relatively decent thermal compound like MX4 would net much better results I'm sure. My plan is also to repaste both CPU and GPU with conductonaut. Planning to cover the components on the chip with electrical tape in case of leakage.

Oh, and from memory, I don't think the GPU has even reached 80 degrees yet.

Thanks for the info. I wonder if what you're experiencing is from the usage being single-threaded. For example, playing most CPU intensive games, they only make use of a single core. ArmA is an example.
Stress tests and things like CineBench let you choose whether to push one core or all.

While on the subject. Does anyone have a good disassembly video? It looks like the bottom cover exposes everything but it would help to see someone else do it so I dont' have to figure out where the fan ribbons/cables are before pulling the heatsink.

Warning: Some i7-6820HKs and i7-6700HQ have Uneven Core Temps due to Uneven Heatsink Pressure
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...ven-core-temps-due-to-uneven-heatsink.797477/

Originally started the thread for MSI 6820HK owner reports, but then AW owners kinda took over the thread with their bad heatsink design, 3 screw points - tough to assemble with even heatplate pressure applied to the CPU.

And, the high core differential happens with the 6700HQ as well.

When you re-paste make sure you apply even pressure from all screw points at the same time - if you get one side to "catch" early and tilt the heat plate pressure to it, the other 2 "sides" won't be able to get good pressure coverage.

A paste like ICD would be good as it's thick and gooey enough to make connection.

While a thin paste like a "metal" paste - CLU / Conductonaut wouldn't help if the heatplate isn't evenly under pressure.

If you can coat both the CPU and headplate and get the pressure exactly balanced it might work, but be careful the "metal" doesn't run and short out some motherboard component.

Good luck! And, please post your results to the other thread too!!

Ahh thanks people, interesting stuff. Hopefully the Aorus CPU hasn't got an issue with an unbalanced heatsink, or if so, it could be easily rectified considering the fastener points on all 4 corners.

Ill try the metal stuff first to get more of an idea if there is potentially some unbalanced business going on.

I'll order the stuff, be super careful, do a bit of testing, and post results. Just like a few others have mentioned.

If that fails, i'll just stick on some MX4 for the time being since I have that lying around.

MX4 is one of the pastes that needs replacement most often - it pumps out from heat and oxidization.

I wouldn't jump to metal paste unless you are very familiar with it, I've seen enough dead laptops after using it to not recommend it to novices.

The mere action of flicking the brush can unleash globlets of silvery doom onto other parts nearby.

ICD seems to be a good longer term paste that works well in cases where heatplate fitment isn't the best.

Whatever you end up using, please come back and let us know how it works out :)

Ditto. Once my unit arrives i'll be using CLLU after my initial benchmark runs. If it does not work or temps get even more out of hand, then i'll be going back to either GC Extreme or IC Diamond 24. Possibly Kryonaunt too. Will you be testing with the lvl 4 OC setting or on stock speeds? I'll be testing at stock cos its hot as hell where i'm at and that in itself will wreck temps

What is mostly worrying is that besides the striping issue, the built in screen seem to have PWM from 60 hz which is really bad. Unfortunately, it is not for sale with a 1080p in Europe (at least not in Sweden).

I'm not sure what to make of that since the X7 v6 review didn't have PWM and it's the same screen?

Can you explain the PWM issue? Bit confused.

According to notebookcheck, the X7V6 120hz screen uses PWM to control screen brightness. PWM is when the screen's backlight flickers on and off at a certain frequency. If the frequency is low enoigh, people with sensitive eyes will be affected and it can cause eye strain or headaches in cases
