Well great, I just got mine today...DOA. Repeating series of 3 beeps as soon as it's turned on, which the manual suggests is a sign of some type of motherboard failure (chipset, etc.). As a result, the laptop freezes when the Windows loading bar is onscreen.

Gonna call Dell tomorrow and see what's up. I can't understand how it arrives DOA if it was supposedly tested in the factory. The box shows no signs of damage from a drop etc., so either something happened to it in the factory after testing or I just got a lemon motherboard.

    3 weeks of waiting for nothing...awesome. :/

(from Wikipedia) Here are Dell's Plants
    * Austin, Texas, + manufacturing in USA for the US market
    * Brazil for the south american market
    * Poland (will replace the current plant in Ireland)
    * Penang, Malaysia since 1995
    * Xiamen, China since 1999 (Malaysia and China supply the APAC region.)
    * Chennai, India since 2007, 400,000 PCs p.a. for the Indian market

So the European market is served by an European plant!

    Hi, :)
    I have got a 1535 too.
Do we have a touch screen display we can use with the new touch screen technology implemented in Windows 7?

What's the cpu usage with the Creative X-Fi sw.?

Just installed modded 9.5 catalyst drivers on my Studio 1555 (Win XP 32-bit)

FPS in GTA IV jumped to 44.86 (from 33~36) after installing the modded driver. Am playing the game with all the effects turned down at 800x600. ;)

My 1537 was already assembled in Poland, so I assume all european 1555 are.

    wrong bud.
I'm in BG, Europa and my Studio 1535 is made in Ireland.
My MOBO was replaced, but on my notebook I clearly written "Made in Ireland"
    Dell has factories in Ireland,Poland,Thailand...
By the way the quality from Ireland's factory is good enough.

Your 1535 is a model older than my 1537 and the 1555, so it was very probably assembled earlier. The production can have been moved to Poland later.

No... my 1535 is made in Poland...
And I bought another XPS before the Studio serie came out and it is from Poland too.
To be sure where your laptop is from you have to look at the UPS website once you have the tracking number...

I think that both factories were producting in same time, but now it can be all moved to Poland. I'm waiting for my 1555 :D

P.S. First Dell in Poland was producted on 20 november 2007.

Hi all, I've been reading the threads for a while and wanted to get some more opinions on the 1555 vs SSE. I know the SSE is basically the 1537 with the edge to edge monitor.

I placed my order for the SSE last week with an estimated delivery date of 6/15
I could cancel my order and go with the 1555 with an estimated ship date of 6/01. what do you think. I have ~$1000 to play with.

I really like the edge to edge on the Special edition but i don't know if it's worth it? I don't play computer games at all, and don't plan to watch too many movies so i'm not sure how important the upgraded graphics card on the 1555 will be.

The main conflict i'm having is deciding between the 15.4" (16:10) edge-to-edge or the 15.6" (16:9) displays. The other concern i have is considering the problems people have had with the 1537 and 1535.

So... sorry for being all over the place on this first post, this has all just been building up inside me over the last week as i'm getting more anxious for my computer to get here and the starting to wonder if i made the right decision on the model i chose. Any help/opinions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    G

The Studio series does not have a tablet screen, no. If it did, you would be able to use it in Vista anyway.

Hi guys...I got my Studio yesterday and I must say that while it is an excellent laptop the hot touchpad issue is a MAJOR one for me...it's not just a little amount of heat on the touchpad...my fingers are BURNING if I use the touchpad though the laptop is pretty cool otherwise...any suggestions? Should I call Dell?

Yeah I would. Definitely sounds like a heat problem.

I hope my 1555 doesn't come with any of these problems.

The touchpad gets warm but it's never gotten so hot as to "burn my fingertips." I'd be worried if it is getting that warm.

It also depends on what you are doing. It gets very warm when playing games, but I never felt the need to douse my hand in cold water.

lol no problems here either.. then again its only been a week so far. Only thing i dont like about it is the partitioned hard drive... for some reason, dell decided to dedicate 15gb for their recovery things, and i have no idea how to reallocate it back to the main partition.

Use a third party partition manager, like PartitionMagic, or boot into GParted with a Live CD.

Yes, you're effectively just extending the main partition to take over the recovery partition.

I should warn you before you proceed with that. I used GParted exactly as the guide said with no errors or failures. Upon my reboot I could not get into the OS. I had to completely erase the harddrive and reinstall Vista, the repair option did not work. (This was with my previous Studio 1535.) Just be mindful that there is a chance of corruption with GParted. I have not used PartitionMagic and you may have better luck with it. :)

I can't speak for GParted, as I'm mostly going off of word of mouth, but I can verify that Partition Magic works excellently and has never given me any corruption issues on multiple systems, including this 1535 with Vista x64.

I know everyone has different needs and such, but I really don't see why most people don't just do a clean install with the Windows 7 release candidate. It lasts for an entire year, and when it eventually does expire you can just install Vista that came with your system or buy a Windows 7 disc. While Vista SP 1 is a pretty good OS, Windows 7 just runs like butter and has a super functional taskbar that swayed me away from OS X.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx

Simply put, Windows 7 is the most fun I've ever had with an operating system, which is saying a lot.

Hi, I just wanted to let those of you that are waiting for your orders to know that I ordered my new Studio 1555 on May 6, got an estimated delivery date of June 2, and it came yesterday! That was 2 weeks from order to delivery, and it was 2 weeks early. The Belkin carry bag and Logitech wireless laser mouse I ordered with it, even though they were a separate order # and were shipped from an entirely different state , all arrived together on the same FedEx truck. Not bad, that's amazing shipping coordination, all in perfect condition, and all 2 weeks early, I'm impressed. I haven't even had a chance to fire it up yet, maybe tomorrow. Is it the thing to do here now to do a format & clean install the very first thing out of the box to get rid of all the garbage & bloatware?

Congrats on your new studio and fast production/ shipping. What were your configs?

As seen in my sig, what I have ordered on May 7 is still in production to this very morning. It is extremely slow, and way past 2 weeks. I called Dell 2 days ago and they couldn't say anything about any promised ship date.

Patience is a virtue I guess. Hope you enjoy your studio just as much as I will! :D

What do you guys think of the 900p or 1080p screen? I was thinking I'd get the 900p because 1600x900 seems like appropriate resolution for a 15.6" screen, whereas 1920x1080 is barely smaller than my 24" screen so font (and basically everything) might be kinda small. But I've never seen either in person, so opinions please?

It depends on how good your eyesight is. I have no problems viewing 1920x1200 on a 15.4" screen, but then again, I have 20/20 vision. The best way to check would be to go to a store like Best Buy, Staples, Micro Center, or Fry's and look at it yourself. Look at the different 15" laptops and their resolutions. If they don't have any 15.6" with 900p or 1080p, look at a 15.4" with 1440x900 or 1920x1200, as these will be the closest resolutions.

Well I currently have the 900p (1600x900) screen.

I have FAR from 20/20 vision and resolutions higher than 900p on a 15inch gives me bad eyestrain to the point I resize everything and might as well be using 900p. With 900p, you can comfortably sit two apps like Word side by side.

If you want to play games, remember the 4570 will definitely not be able to handle 1080p resolution for the latest games. Stretching a smaller resolution to a 1080p screen will make the game look worse than if you had the 900p or 720p screen.

Actually I'm using GPU-z, that is CPU-z, a different program (nice info it provides though). As far as I can tell, that is the latest version (April 29, 2009).

I have the 512MB version of the 4570.

I dunno why Dell would have two different GPU parts. I would assume the only difference between the 256MB and 512MB 4570 is the amount of ram it comes with.

Can anyone else confirm the results I am getting?

Well the heating issue is definitely out of the ordinary. I hope Dell solves your problem.

Anyways, I have gone through and ran 3DMark06 to compare with the notebookcheck site.

    Here's a notebookcheck's list of videocard benchmarks: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

I'm getting the following results for my build:

    T9550 Core 2 Duo 2.66 Ghz
    4GB Ram DDR2 800 (2x2GB)
    512MB ATI Mobility Radeon 4570
    250GB 7200RPM

    Notebookcheck's Results:
    3DMark05: 7793
    3DMark06: 2654

    My Results:
    3DMark05: 8071
    3DMark06: 4291

Notice the 3DMark06 is noticeably higher than the result on notebookcheck.

Take from that what you will.
