My 1530 has a faint but very annoying high pitch whine...that alone made me get a system exchange...but other than that I think it's a pretty cool designed, powerful laptop.
-
I was really pleased with mine, however the paint is wearing away very quickly and easily, I'm sure It shouldn't be doing that on a laptop that's about 2, pushing 3 months old.
I'm also beginning to have very irritating quickset power adaptor errors, the is battery not charging 100% of the time and the system locks itself into lower power states.
This is in addition the on-board sound crackling and humming.
I've contacted dell about it and after a painful 45 mins monologue they are going to call me back with a solution next week.
I have to say, their actual support is very good, the people on the other end are not though, most don't seem to be able to speak understandable English. (xps and inspiron support) -
Are you satisfied with your Dell Laptop? No, not at all
I have had two different Dell XPS M170 laptops. In the first system the video card fried after about a week of use, just basic tasks, word processing, Internet browsing, any normal school task. The laptop was sent in for repair. Upon sending in the system, Dell lost it. DHL says the package was delivered, but Dell couldn't "find" it. It took close to a month to finally return the system, which they tried to tell to me they couldn't return it cause it was "out of the return period," but I finally get my money back, and with it I got a two hundred dollar coupon, to "satisfy me."
I went back to searching for another laptop, but my search would always bring me back to the M170. There was a big sale before the release of the M1710(I think that's what the model was) and there was a sale on the warrenty, three year AT HOME service warrenty. I hoped that the last system was a fluke and I ordered a new laptop.
I got my new laptop was happy to find everything was going great for a few months. After about six months things started to go wrong again. My hard drive started to produce a high-pitch wine as the ball bearing was going bad, and the performance started to drop. At about the same time the hinges for the LCD started to get loose and the slightest movment with the system on my lap would cause the screen to wobble. Both the hard drive and back panel was replaced. After another couple months the same issues came up again, and again had it replaced, wasted even more of my time. After about one year from getting the laptop the power port went bad on my motherboard. At the same time the lovely hard drive was going bad again. The motherboard, hard drive and back panel was replaced. The service guy installed the new parts and left before even checking if everything worked, which it didn't. The system wouldn't boot sometimes, it would blue screen, you name it. Talked to the support again, who told me my RAM was now bad, and sent me new ones, installed them, nothing, still not working. After more time of dealing with support they told me they "didn't know what was wrong" so they couldn't send any parts for at-home repair, I was forced to send the system to Dell to get it fixed(note what happened last time I tried to send a system in). This time when I sent it to Dell everything went fine. Dell replaced the motherboard, RAM, CPU, and hard drive. After two or three months of not having my system, which was during the spring semester of '07, I finally got a working laptop, this laptop was meant main as a school laptop, doesn't help to not have a working laptop. But it didn't last long. After a couple months, early this summer, the hard drive started to go bad. The bearings were starting to go out. I was so fed up with dealing with the crap I didn't touch the laptop all summer and until fall I didn't do anything with it. It seemed after sitting for awhile the bearings on the hard drive were a little better, to the point where I didn't go completely insane. Even though the bearing on the hard drive seem to be better now that didn't mean the drive was fine. Tried firing it up and it wouldn't, the hard drive was corrupt and had to reinstall Windows, again, for the I don't know how many'th time. I got sick of it and let the system sit again. A few days ago I tried using the system again. I reinstall Windows and attempted to install updates. No go. Trying to install IE7, error. Trying to install WMP11, error. Upon reboot after updating Windows the system was unusable. Time to install Windows again. I think you know what happens this time, errors when updating. I attempt to run chkdsk, error even trying to run the program. I attempted to do a Ghost backup, hoping to not take as long to install Windows, error, unreadable sector. Ran the Dell diagnostic test, errors like crazy on hard drive read/write. When running the test for 12% of the total drive, I couldn't suffer though anymore, I encountered 76 errors, dead sectors and such. At that rate there would have been well over 600 errors for the whole drive, it could have been more if I somehow sat through the whole thing. I contact support again, they probably know me by name soon, they agree to send me a hard drive, after trying to tell me I need to try and "repair" the drive. So I got the new drive this Monday. Install the drive and start the millionth Windows install on the system, the hard drive seems fine. So that means the system is running fine? Negative. Now fans are starting to go bad. I don't know which one, hard to tell, but one or both of them now have bad ball bearings (I took out the hard drive and the noise continues, so not that). Time to talk to support, again. And waste more of my time talking to them, waiting for the support guy to call and arrive, install the new fan(s), etc.
Why oh why did I buy this "high-end" laptop? Guess I did learn something from this... -
Your 1730 is still awesome though.
-
Had issues getting my $200 Dell Gift Card, but after four different calls got it settled. Happy with the computer and price. I have had a few different notebook computers from work and have always been most happy with the Dells.

Yes...but Have Regrets...
What Else I Can Say After Spending 48k Inr....
Jus Dont Know, Not Having A Feeling Of Satisfaction..
I Was Expecting A Machine Faster Than My Old Desktop (1.2 Ghz Celeron) But Its Slow.. Can't Do Anything Now...
Or May Be Vista Is Making It Slow...
Vostro 1500....c2d T5470, 2gb Ram, 160gb Hdd, 128mb Nvidia 8400m Gs.... -
Completely Satisfied, Once I have my hands on the Machine!
Ive had 2 dells so far both ~inspirons~
I had to wait for a month before I got them, dont like to wait, especially when i read that people have gotten theirs withing 4 days!!!!WHAT?!! 4 days? I dont know if they are serious but, whats the point in lying about that?
second, I dont like the fact how they have different configurations all the time.... when i first looked into buying my second one i noticed they offered a 320gb hd (2X160) well when i was ready to purchase roughly a week later, this option was gone, and they had a 160 gb hd @ 7200 rpm (they had a few others too) but then i asked one of the people if i could get 2 (160 @ 7200rpm) and was told no!? what why not, if youve got one im sure you have two just stick it in there damn it!
and the fact that i didnt know you needed an interposer and caddy for a second hard drive! and it doesnt come with these items even though it has two hard drive bays?
other than this i must say i am very happy will both of the dells i have purchased, and the only reason i decided to purchase a new one was because i gave the older one to my brother, and i can still use it when needed.
and i must say i have taken the old one (a dell inspiron 9300, 17") to the woods to download my trail cam photos and on all hunting trips, it has a few scratches on it, and i am fairly careful with it but i must say it may not be a tough book and i havent dropped it from any heights, it holds up to getting tossed around the truck and 4 wheeler rides!
oh and on the new one a (inspiron 1720, in sig!) i am really happy with this one however, why must the 9cell battery in the back wiggle and not fit correctly? i know it will stick out a little bit thats OK, but the wiggling kind of erks me! -
Yep with regrets.
Built quality is good but I have one small case deffect (contacting dell - after 2 days no reply) - plastic comes off.
And my Lid with screen is so soft ... sometimes when I close the lid for only half it's not straight but right or left side is higher than another - is it normal ? -
My M4300 impreesses me more every day I use it. My one experiance with technical service was very positive although the follow-up was kind of annoying (who has time to take a survey).
-
I'm very happy with my Inspiron 1501, Vostro 1500 and Vostro 1700. I'm also very happy with the level of Dell Support when I had a problem on my Vostro 1500.
No complaints, and highly recommended. -
XPS M1330; T9300, 4GB, 320GB, LED, +++
Runs great, Dbl boot XP PRO SP3 and SUSE 10.3
Great for programmers. Got rid of Vista right away.
XP and Linux both installed with minimal device handling.
Everything works as good as it could.
I figured by this time the kinks should have been worked out with the M1330.
I heard too many horror stories from the first puppies that came out as M1330's.
My toy was made in Malaysia. And took less than the two weeks stated from order date.
When prices come down I will upgrade to the fastest CPU that will work with this motherboard. This should last a year or two at least in good shape. -
I'm satisfied but with regrets.
I got my 1530 latop and everything was perfect. No problems for a month when I had a little accident and the lid plastic got damaged. It was an insignificant fault but aesthetically not acceptable.
I was even suprised Dell decided to actually repair that saying that the warranty covers that. I was pleased. The cuustomer service representative were all very helpful, and proffessional on the phone. They arranged service two days later.
Unfortunately, the technician that came was a incompetent and broke a microswitch responsible for turning off the laptop with a lid closing.
On top of that he couldn't assemble the laptop, he broke fe plastics and left the hinges wobbling. The second technician that was called to fix ( what the first one had broken) made it even worse. That one was also bad-mannered and clearly must have had some brain disfunction as he acted like an idiot-rock star.
I asked for a replacement and they processed it immediately. I got a new latop only after two days after the claim.
CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS VERY HELPFUL but
DELL'S TECHNICIANS are DANGEROUS!!! BE CAREFULL.
THESE GUYS ARE AMATEURS AND MAKE THINGS WORSE THAN THEY ARE.
ACTUALLY THEY ARE THIRD PARTY COMPANIES CONTRACTED BY DELL.
I will insist on making a complaint against them. -
Nowhere does Dell say that they will send a Dell technician to your house. I'm not trying to argue with you, I'm just saying that Dell openly admits that they contract wtih 3rd party companies to give you technical support. No company has technicians everywhere around the world. There's no way they could afford that.
-
Im satisfied with my purchase but wish that dell would start offering some quality material for their screens and touchpads, etc. the sound is also only mediocre. Problem wise, mine came with a broken webcam that had to be sent in for replacement. Its working well now, but i still have regrets.
-
My m1330... the heat...
Otherwise I love it -
-
I am very *happy* with my 1530...and have *no regrets* purchasing
-
I would like to change my vote to "yes but I have regrets".
I ordered a new Vostro 1500. It was a dud as it appeared it was put together by a drunk monkey. I called Dell and they said they would build me another one. The replacement unit appears to me as if it's a refurbed system and not a new unit. There are blemishes on certain parts of the laptop.
I also have an annoying ac adapter message which pops up intermittently saying it's a 65W adapter and I need a 90W to properly charge the battery.
The next Dell system I buy will go back if it doesn't look right or has problems. I will never request a new exchanged unit because now I know they send out refurbed systems under the guise of being brand new. -
i have owned dell 4 desk tops and 7 laptops, 4 i still have now, overall great machines, i have owned lots of other brands of other computers and some home made too, and i obviously like dell enough to only buy from them. warranty's are always great, sometimes tough to get service but no other brand is perfect either
they have my business forever, unless they take a huge nose dive -
ya, the technician are retarded... and dell wont just send me the stuff anymore, so i have to hover and stop them from braking ****. and they try to tell me how to turn off my computer! like i don't have a clue or somthing. i am sure some are great, i just haven't experienced it yet
-
Received a new m1530 this week, but have problems with the touchpad and the LED screen bleeds from the top and bottom center. I think I'll be returning this and keeping my t43 for the time being.
-
"Yes... but I have regrets"
The screen quality is rubbish, no matter what type of dell laptop you get. Latitude, inspiron, XPS, vostro, studio... they all use the same crap panels hence the low low price. My next laptop will not be a Dell as I would like to watch tv programs and films on my laptop that doesn't turn into a cloudy grey mess.
The warranty and customer care is good though, can't fault them there. -
I like my M1530. I just feel like the build quality should be better. There are just little things and make me a little irritated. My bro has a E1705, and looking for that everything snaps in exactly right, and it just feels solid. On the M1530 there is a little gap here, something not completely flush there etc....
-
I love my 1530. There are absolutely no issues at all with it.
-
Not at all
I have gotten the blue screen of death some where around 12 times (in about a month and a half)
Bit big and heavy (I guess that is my fault)
screen flickers when turned on
Dells own webcam software gave the blue screen of death
Runs a bit warm (hard to hold for more than 45 min)
Very bright blue lights
Vista
Blue tooth can not always find mouse (dont know who to blame)
Stickers for Vista abd Cantrino not strait (Just noticed that)
Loud CD drive and HD

How can I put my feelings into words ? If you own a M1330 and had GPU problems, you would understand. There's a Post on the legality of DELL not actually rectifying the design fault but merely updating the BIOS to prolong the time before the fatal result of the GPU over-heating. When the nVidia GPU eventually die, the Warranty would have expired, and DELL will no longer be obligated for repairs. DELL has not been honest to their customers, we as customers should take our future customs elsewhere.
-
Dell did extend the warranty by a year ...
-
I have regrets . . .
The GPU defects / Sound popping and cracking / HDD failure / generally crappy display and subsequent difficulties of addressing all these issues has made me feel like I actually paid too much for what I got. The GPU (8400GS) really needs more muscle as it is lame that you can buy a laptop (a one shot deal, basically computer as a whole is not upgradeable) that can't handle the most basic games at its native resolution. I know I know - get an XPS or whatever. That is a big expense however, and it is my fault for not thinking that I would get the game itch again once I was back in school. Just the same, its not like I can just buy a better card and get it in here.
The one regret I had initially however was that I went with a small HDD . . . after my failure I just went ahead and stuck a 320Gb in there. Smartest thing I have done so far.
Other than that, the computer works great, and I love the feel of the keyboard. Makes others seem overly pointy and high-effort. I have days when I think the LCD is nice, and other says when the poor viewing angles and uneven brightness make me want to cry however. And my computer spends most of its time on a desk.

Have regrets too..
- Faulty gpu.
- Dodgy crackling noise from headphones.
- Bleeding, patchy screen.
- Noisy Fan
- Very Noisy, clicking hdd.
- Ridiculously Noisy dvd drive (unuseable in mildly quiet environment)
- Ethernet card deliberately ruined (by Dell)
- Questionable quality - e.g. speakers, paint job (wearing away on bottom) etc. -
Yes, definitely. I have a M1530 and could not find a better compromise between power and price.
-
Yes....But have regrets.
the build quality is a bit bad with a few scratches here and there which Dell refuses to fix as they are "Cosmetic damages" which are not covered by the warranty....they were there from day 1 then how the hell are those damages done by me???
they refused to listen and hence i stopped asking I've gotten used to them now -
No. Died after 8 months. Replaced mobo but will likely have to again and my 12 month warranty is over in 2 months, so I am out of luck. M1330 with integrated graphics. Could never get a good diagnosis after 2 months of work, tried everything and only the mobo replacement seemed to help.
-
Yep, no regrets here after a year and a half (finally feel like I've had it long enough to be qualified to cast a vote - if you've had it three days it's a bit early to say you're satisfied). The only thing that didn't work well was Vista, and Microsoft is to blame for that. Hardware-wise, my Inspiron 1520 (dedicated 8600M GT type) is great, and the build quality is quite solid. I think all things considered (price, performance, quality) it was one of the best options in the upper-middle price range in summer 2007.
Would I buy the 1520 given those options again? Yes. Would I buy Dell now? Certainly not 1525 - it's very lacking on performance and I actually prefer the heavier 1520 build. Maybe the Studio 1737. But I think the competition has improved, too. And Dell's price premium on dedicated graphics (and not that great of ones these days like the 1520 was when it was introduced and was bested only by 7950/8700) is still something I question the wisdom of. Hasn't seemed to help them market-wise. -
I'm on my third motherboard. First one was replaced due to a loose power connector. IE: battery wouldn't charge when connected. Dell tech replaced it. Six days later the graphics card was shot. They replaced it again. The second motherboard lasted six months. Same issue- dead grahic's card. I have six months left on a three year in home warranty.
-
only use Dells at school, on campus, lab or whatever, and yes, there have been problems, people had to call Dell, and had to be repaired, but on the other hand, some seem to last a while.
-
Nearing one year of everyday use of my D630. So far has been rock-solid, only upgraded the memory and hard drive. The Quadro graphics haven't even given up on me either
-
Have had my M1530 for a while now, its got the best looking screen I've ever seen on any laptop, awesome design, excellent keyboard, and great graphics card 8600GT that has not failed on me at all despite Nvidia's batch of defective graphics cards.
After upgrading my Vista to Windows 7 Beta 1 and running Performance Index test and comparing results to others who have posted with the same system and my system getting higher ratings... I am perfectly satisfied and have no complaints about the build quality of my system.
I have always been satisfied with Dell even before ordering my M1530 as I have had other systems and they've all arrived in perfect condition.
The only qualm I had was the first M1530 I ordered was not properly balanced, ram cover was not closed properly, disc drive was extremely loud even for a slotted drive, and had random crashes... but the day I got that defective system I called in for a brand new replacement (not refurbished) and it was addressed promptly and the replacement that came in was quite literally flawless. -
Pleased, but regrets.
Explanation:
History:
I own a Samsung P35 for 4 years now. between my P35 i have bought a Thinkpad T60 with a brilliant Flexview Screen, but a lack in 3D performance (64MB Radeon X1300). Now that Dell released the M4400 with a magnesium alloy chassis (like the P35), a big FX770 3D card (like the p35s Radeon9700 at their time) and a really brilliant LED screen and XPpro support i just had no excuse anymore not to by a new Notebook *g* and i just ordered it.
And YAY it has a DOCK!
--> M4400 seemed like a brilliant up to date Samsung P35 replacement
Regrets:
When i got my M4400 it was Bios A05 installed. Holy i had overheating issues more and more. And there was a bug, the M4400 never clocked the fan down even when its not been hot any more.
Bla bla i think u all know the history of that Dell M4400 Heat issue with the bioses.
Finally Dell Released the A09 which is fine for me, but it took months up to this. Thats what im f***ed about. That there was so many bugs and sh*twith the heat.
In the end my M4400 works. And now im happy. IT took 3 Months. Hell if i would work like dell my customers would kick my A*S! -
I have had my vostro 1700 running/multitasking literally 24/7/365 since I bought it back in ~jan 2008 and its still going strong. Plays all my games at 1920x1200 res, multitasks like a dream and still looks great.
Pros:
-Best screen Ive seen
-multitasking
-gaming (for me)
-adult styling
-high resolution
-dual HDD
-runs cool
-full size numpad
-keyboard
-battery life (6 cell)
Cons:
8600mGT not powerful enough for hardcore gamers
size for some comuters
wieght for some comuters
None of the cons are cons for me, as I game great, and I have had no problem lugging this rig around a large campus. All in all the best rig I have had to date, although I am starting to like the idea of a desktop CPU top end GPU sager or something comparable (not a fan of the numpad on the sager). -
i have a latitude e6400. hardware is fine, but drivers and software are buggy...
-
After nearly 1 year...I am still fantastically happy with my Red 1530
This being my first lappy, has proven it's strength, and cost that I paid for it, to me
It still looks as sleek and sexy as ever, the performance is fast, and I haven't had any of the problems that became *well known* with the 1530
The only time I had a problem was nearly 6 months ago, when I had to have the Motherboard replaced due to a faulty *socket* for the adapter.
Since then, things have been just fine. If there were any prob's they were merely *user error*. I would not hesitate to get another 1530!
Cin -
Great if you forked out the money on CC. Otherwise I would have been in trouble with my previous laptop needing motherboards, or a new hd every other month. Dell always sent a tech the next day with the part to fix and finally replaced the machine.
-
I am not at all satisfied with my inspiron 1520..been 1 year now.
Why cant they get the stupid drivers fixed. Whole reason we buy from trusted brands is not to be bothered with Non Maskable Interrupts or Crash Dumps or whatever. We simply have more important things to do. -
-
Very satisfied with our two-year-old Vostro 1500
Ordered an M1330 with 8400M-GS that died two days after owning. Got no grief at all on returning it for refund. Subsequently ordered another refurb M1330 with the integrated graphics. Very pleased thus far.
And just ordered a new Vostro 1720 with the 35% off coupon for my wife to replace the 1500 (which is going to a friend) -
placed an order for dell studio 1550. dell lost the shipment. its been over a week and dell is still trying to find where they put the box. are they living in stone age with no tracking?
$2500 out of my pocket, one month of waiting, and i get nothing. zero customer service.
horrible experience. -
yomamasfavourite Notebook Evangelist
More importantly, why?
Fully specked, that laptop is worth no where near 2500 bucks.
If I were you, I'd force them to cancel it (as they've so far messed you about) get your money back.
Then go buy a laptop with decent specs that's actually worth that much. -
I have never paid my own money for a Dell laptop as they have always been issued to me. For years I have had Dells die on me. I have had Latitude and various workstation models. I once went through three Dell laptops in a year.
-
already cancelled and waiting for refund. -
First Dell Studio 1535 had a faulty motherboard which caused a boatload of other problems. Replacement 1535 had defective eject button (common for all Studio 15's.) Next Replacement 1537 has the same exact problem... Customer service/tech support have been really nice to me, but I really wish a new computer is perfect from the start.
