does the Inspiron E1420 have the Integrated IR?
-
Supposedly it's located somewhere among the front headphone/mic ports on the 1420. If it's a brand new item for this new Inspiron line (presumably), why can it only be found as a refurb? Is that how those who did get the remote ordered it as?
-
Can anyone confirm that the E1420 will be compatible with the FW-331 remote? I'm just going to order it from dell for $10.99 so long that is will work with my new E1420...
-
A CSR over the phone told me that the Dell Remote is $30 new....$11 is what the refurb costs. No luck getting it for free/getting a coupon/or as a concession. I already have a $100 concession coupon that I have not yet used so she said that she couldn't do the remote for free for me. The only argument I could offer was that reviews and others at Dell claim the system should have come with the unit, standard, and when I configured it, there wasn't even an option to add the remote.
-
-
Very true. Lately I've only been getting overseas reps, and although very nice, I sometimes feel there's a bit of a breakdown when making my point or explaining an issue.
-
The 1420 does in fact have the infrared receiver built in. Just go build a 1420 right quick and you'll see that they also offer the Dell Travel IR Remote for $15.
I'm still thinking if I should get my order modified to include the remote or hold out for a 3rd party ExpressSlot remote.. Bluetooth > IR for remotes. -
Does the Dell remote charge itself when it's in the ExpressCard slot?
-
Do you get this remote when i order in the USA? if not then what do i tell the rep? part number is it free?
-
Jovan, your signature is wrong. The T7300 is not 2.2ghz, it's 2.0ghz.
And no, you have to order it seperately when you build your laptop. Or talk to someone who can change your order to include it. -
-
So... Which part # is working for everyone? I am going to update my 1st post.
-
i just got mine free..at first i was arguing about me not getting a discount upon a purchase of 1520 using my dpa 4 weeks ago,,of course he wouldnt budge,,so i then said what about the fw331 that all my friends got on their 1520.i said even the reviews had it...she spoke to her supervisor and voila!!!! i got it..
-
I got mine free with my laptop it was included in the quotation so i didn't had to ask for it. It's part no. is "PU575".

Last night when using my 1420 with a lamp on beside me, I noticed that the headphone/mic jack grouping in the front is not an opaque black, but rather translucent, with red showing through. This is undoubtedly the IR receiver, and I would say a very cool design at that. I had previously written off any laptop with a headphone jack in the front, but now I'm rather satisfied with the port placement on the 1420. I just hope that I can still get this remote - and not be charged $30++ for it.
-
I think the good thing about the remote is, that you can put it in the expresscard slot. That way you wont have to carry it separately like other big remotes with ****load of features. The dell remote has only basic features and that's why im pretty sure i will love it. Especially for powerpoint presentations and movies when watching them in bed.
-
When I placed my order for a 1400 last night, they have the option for the travel remote but it's priced at $60. WTF!?! 1420 = $13? And it is the same one as the 1420. At first I thought it was the Phillips remote or some other one, but no, it's the same. You can pair it with the Creative earbuds for another $20. How can they have the same item(s) with such a price differential?
-
I asked them why they do this, and a rep told me that it was the decision of the marketing section and that he has no further information on this -
I received my 1420 and so far I'm satisfied with it.
Could anyone please help out how to figure out that my lappie has a IR receiver in it??
Because I saw all types of hardwares in the device manager, but didnt find any IR device. Btw I have bluetooth module on my laptop. Do they exclude IR if bluetooth is included?? Then I would really be sad!!
Please help by checking on your machine where are you seeing the IR reciever in hardare. Also, as a user said there's a red light near headphone port, I dont see any light there.
Thanks a bunch in advance. I thought to confirm whether i have IR reciever and then order a remote. -
It's not a red light that I found.....shine a light right at the headphone/mic array and you will see red material behind the black face plate. I believe this to be the IR receiver. As for showing up under hardware, I am not sure what it would be labeled as.
I am again trying Dell on the remote business, and all I get as an answer from the overseas CSRs I keep getting connected to is that I would have to purchase it new for $30 (plus shipping and handling) and that of course the refurb unit carries no warranty. They say that the $11 or $15 for a new remote is only applicable to new systems when initially configuring them. Seems odd that other accessories that can be configured with the system at build are the same price if you buy them later. Hardly seems fair that I should have to pay more than 2x the cost for the unit since it wasn't even an option when I built my system at the beginning of July. arg.... -
Wooohooo!! Take a look at this:
And you don't wanna see what I wrote to them -
woo hoo- Davron's finally getting his remote. One thing though, there's no part listed so be careful they aren't sending you the wrong one which they've done alot. Check your order to be sure.
As far as IR receiver goes, if you got the 1420 / 1520 or 1720, you have IR. And no, if you got BT they don't 'remove' IR. You get both (different remotes work on IR and BT) -
The infrared port appears to be below the media buttons in the front center of the computer.
-
Does this remote work with powerpoint presentations?
-
Edit: Oh wow, I take it back; checked Dell Canada's website today, if you go to the Media Enhancements Center area, theres a "Dell Travel Control, IR" for "$0", but you have to select it first! Odd that it's selected as "none" as default, but it's free...
-
ehehe i am just happy mine is free
-
Has anybody else received their remote through the use of Dell Chat? I logged on there after I placed my order this evening and after some brief dialogue, she had ordered the remote for me, free of charge w/ separate shipping. Wasn't very hard at all!
-
This morning I checked My Orders on Dell Home and found this placed there - Order Description: IREXT Wireless Infrared Remote Extender, Item Number: A1152892. Is this the correct part?
-
I talked on Tuesday to a Dell Chat advisor, gave my order number, and presto.
however, it was shipped wednesday. I hope it comes with.
Will arrive today, and I'll let you know! -

I ended up with a $25 concession coupon...
With the free shipping, I ended up with the FW331 remote and a Tripp Lite travel surge protector (TRAVELER100BT) for a $1 shipped

well, my laptop came..but..no remote.
try to figure it out...
see, i had a chat with a dell sales representative (on Tuesday). The person said absoultely no problem. He said email confirmation would come. However, it never came, and I received my laptop today.
I complained, asking where it was. The sales representative created a whole new order with a TV TUNER (not a remote) but somehow was cancelled.
I'm trying to explain that I was told it would be no problem to have it added on by a sales rep, but they need proof.
Will it be possible to get the travel remote on its own, using my order number for my laptop?
Please help!
thanks -
it's like 10 dollars, might aswell buy it at this point due to the fact you did not get the sales rep information to contact him and talk to him directly, if you did then contact him and deal with him, other wise you gotta pay man
-
PS: Has anybody said the remote kills the battery? -
laptopquestions2007 Notebook Consultant
The same cannot be said for the bluetooth one....
-LW -
No, I believe someone said keeping the remote in the expresscard slot affects the battery life. I might be wrong but I've read it somewhere
Need to confirm if that's true. -
lordofericstan Notebook Evangelist
The differences between the IR one and BT one is that the BT one sticks out of the express card slot by about 1cm, and recharges in the slot, draining your battery. It obviously runs off of BT. The IR remote does not stick out of the express card slot, has NO interaction with the express card slot, and works off of IR. -
Oh - got it - thanks!!
-
apparently this remote is $15 for an inspiron order, but $60 when I ordered my vostro. What are the chances of me getting this remote for $15. they know I don't have an inspiron...

-
I guess they think they can get more if you're using it for business presentations -

Same remote, different target market, different price.
-
hp makes an ir remote, any chance it works?
-
Good question, but I don't think it should.
Speaking of price: it does not matter as long as you know what to say to them...... -
lordofericstan Notebook Evangelist
No the hp remote does not work. They are designed with the intention of only working with the respective computer.
Dell Inspiron Remote, I got it
