do either of the remotes (IR or Bluetooth) work with iTunes? Or do they just work with the dell media program?

Exactly what have people been saying? I entered into a chat session with customer support about general delay issues; I asked for an IR Remote as compensation, and when they told me it couldn't be done, I asked them whether they were willing to lose a sale over a lousy $15 remote. Their response was to credit me $15! Now I'm wondering how to actually get the remote...

I didn't really blackmail them or lie to them but I said I was not satisfied with the service - because I really wasn't - I asked them like 5 times (chat, email, call) and couldn't get the freakin' remote

And I said I'm willing to PAY those 15 bucks, I'm not trying to get it for free - just send me the damn remote :)

PS: Got it in 2-3 days

Well, I'm sitting here at work, but my remote was just delivered to my door (love checking the shipping updates that DHL provides!) so I have that to look forward to when I get home. A remote without a notebook, how fun!

edit: Part FW331 - here she is:

Ok, I'll check if it does for you - 1 second.

EDIT: Just installed and Yes it DOES work with iTunes

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

Edit Edit: Last night I hooked up my 1520 to my Sony Bravia TV and watched "Se7en" (that was a good movie) - Now I don't have to get up to FF or Rewind :)

Media center, a good TV, and a remote is ALL you need to enjoy it

On the front of the notebook, just below the Play/Pause button there should be a piece of plastic which covers the IR port.

Also, just a thanks to everyone who posted the FW331 part number. I ordered it as a "refurbished" product and received it today. It actually looks brand new to me and works very well with my Vostro 1500.

If your computer has either Dell Media Direct (Buttons in front) it should work with this remote. Be sure that you either get the "IR". There is a bluetooth version that only works if you had bluetooth built in.

    From Dell Support:

The Dell Travel Remote is only compatible with Dell portable computers that have a Dell Consumer Infrared (CIR) port. The CIR is standard on select Dell portable computers manufactured after January 31, 2007. The CIR on Dell Portable computers will only function with the Dell Travel Remote, and is not designed to work with any other remote control device.

The Dell™ Travel Remote is a small remote control that you can carry with you. This remote control is designed to be stored in the portable computer's ExpressCard slot and provides simple functionality for enjoying multimedia content. The Dell Travel Remote works with Dell MediaDirect™ and is also compatible with Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Media Center. The Dell Travel Remote does not require any software to function.

To all: I just got my new HP (that I bought for my sister) and the remote came with it FOR FREE! (Unlike Dell...)

I tested it on the Inspiron - and it did NOT work.

Also - it's so much better - it's got more buttons including System ON/OFF, Launch Media Center, QuickPlay (Dell's MediaDirect equivalent) etc..

And the way its expresscard slot works is much better as well... - you press it to get it out, unlike the Dell's PCMCIA-like style.

Only the HP pre-configured laptops come with the remote. It is also an option for HP CTO laptop.

Yes! You can also buy those from Wal-Mart, Costco, Officemax, etc. with the remote included.

    Hey, cool thread.

I just bought an outlet refurb Vostro 1500, and so didn't get the remote. They are $22+tax & shipping from Dell. $25+shipping on flEaBay.

But, thanks to the FW331 code, I got one for $17 shipped after tax. Essentially the same as including it in a new order.

This is going to be my media station for a year at the South Pole, so I will need every entertainment option I have. :-o

It depends on the CTO package too. Some Vostro come with the remote (in Europe?). My HP DV4000 CTO does not come with remote either and I have to order it afterward too. So this depends on package deal rather than the brand.

Anybody that doesnt have this remote, if you didnt get it already from Dell, just order it from Frys. its 39 bucks, and along with the BlueTooth from Dell at 19 bucks, its a pretty good deal. Although buying it from dell would only be 20 bucks more. Current prices show its 20 bucks for the Bluetooth and 59 bucks for the remote from dell when customizing, and its the same when buying as an addon , 19 bucks plus 39 bucks from Frys online, with shipping included its only about 13 bucks cheaper aftermarket.

Ooops, my reply was for the Bluetooth Interlink remote, not for the Dell Labeled remote. I dont know if thats bluetooth or IR.

Nope, EU orders (at least in Germany) can't be configured with a remote for Vostro. It was one of the reasons for me to choose the 1520.
