What would be the best setup to you guys? The 17r se with 1tb 5400rpm and 32gb msata cache or buy a 128 or 256gb ssd and use the 1tb for data and completely get rid of the msata? Would it be much of an hassle to reinstall everything on the ssd?

I havent seen one for a littel while either. A friend of mine is after one.

I managed to get mine for just £517 from there when there were plenty being listed. I guess patience is the key right now.

Admittedly mine isn't a top spec model, but i dont need it to be.

Contact [email protected], I just did 5 minutes ago about the same thing. This was who the Dell customer service rep told me to contact. The part is 87G72 I think.

Jeez, I paid Dell via a transaction, then I got to show some 'evidence' that I paid..
Sent them a summary of the past transactions on my bank account.. didn't get an answer back since then (around 11.30 am)

    Any other people had this?

That keyboard looks sweet, will look out for one of those.

I just clicked the link and emailed them, just asked how much, what part number and would it void the warranty.

But for over 100.00 I will try locate the 3750 as it looks sweet with the grey.

    Thanks all

Huh, wonder why they haven't replied to me. I was hoping to get a spare battery too.

Let me know if you do find a keyboard for cheaper and I'll let you know if I see one

Edit: One possible reason is that I asked whether or not there were higher capacity batteries available. Maybe they are checking it out or something

From skimming through this thread, I cant see anyone who has got a third party 9 cell battery to work, and dell do not to 9 cell's for these from what I have seen, mine only lasts 2.5 hours, so a 9 cell would be awsome.

Dont buy non original batterys to you dell pc. It can refuse taking it. I buy 100% original DELL batterys direct from DELL china (they make them there) i pay around €25-35 for a brand new 9 cell. Otherwise they costs €110-125

    Ho-lee Sh!t!!!

    Hi,
UK Backlit keyboard: £85 + Vat

Battery: I am still awaiting confirmation but a ball park price will be £119 + Vat

    Kind regards,

I think I'll spend my money on a Nexus 7 thanks.

I'd never buy a non-original battery. KSMB do you actually have a 9 cell battery in your 17R SE?? If so please post some pictures of it.

guys you are insane...................a vostro 3750 backlit keyboard for £85 + VAT !!!!
i paid 612 SEK (with shipping to my door).....thats £54 with shipping (included vat and everything).

pm me and i can help you getting a brand new UK backlit vostro 3750 for about £50 if you like...(i can order ALL types of languages to this keyboard direct from my guy on DELL Sweden)

ps...why i said "about" is because (as some people know) DELL parts prices change a little bit day to day....one day it cost £54....next week it cost £51....(dont ask me why..i never got a real answer why)

    edit...
@angrybambi.........not to my 7720...i do have 2 other Dell laptops with new 9-cell direct from DELL China.

That would be great if you could ask him KSMB thanks.

And the battery? Do you have a 9 cell in your 17R SE?

EDIT: Ah ok, I don't think there is any other battery for the 17R SE. I haven't seen the genuine 17R SE battery anywhere other than Dell either, and it's not available in Ireland at the moment. There's no real rush with the battery, I'd just like to be able to buy a second one at some point.

It's actually really annoyingly different, keys in the wrong place etc.

This looks promising - Dell XPS L702x UK Illuminated Keyboard (P/N) 87G72

I just have to check that the picture isn't the keyboard as it has no numpad. l702X keyboard does have numpad though so not too worried

It will recognize your msata if you install the Intel drivers which are included in your driver and utility disc.

There is also a guide from Dell how to install Windows7 manually. Just Google it.

There are tons of french and german and sweedish, but no UK.
If anyone can find one, please let me and angrybambi know, it would be greatly appreciated.

in both the images, if you see the number 4 key, it can be used for three different characters viz. number 4, the special character and the dollar sign. you press 4 without anything else you get 4, press shift and 4 you that that special character (i dont know what you call it). my question is how do you get the dollar sign. i have the indian rupee sign there and none of the usual stuff like fn or win key along with 4 can get the rupee sign. can you advise?

The far-eastern replica in my Vostro 1700 provides longer runtime and appears to last quite a bit longer than original battery that died after only 2 years of use. My 2c.

The 87G72 is the UK Backlit keyboard for the Vostro 3750, the XPS L702X.

Now if KSMB is using a keyboard designed for the Vostro 3750 and it was confirmed compatible by a rep here in the past, then it is also the keyboard for the Inspiron 17R SE.

i was going throught the dell site for drivers and the cd that came alongwith the computer. there are so many for the same purpose and it is so confusion. :(

do i re-install windows and then just run the drivers cd without bothering to peruse whats on the site?

    [edit 1]

took the plunge, threw caution to the wind and tried booting with a usb drive. guess what happened? it wont let me instal!! this is driving me crazy. i never had any difficulty anything trying to boot windows. have done it so many times and yet this one stumps me. the first error i got was that some drivers pertaining to my CD/DVD drive was not installed. i googled it and there were a few posts which said you gotta change the SATA to ATH (or something of that sort) and i did that from the bios and now i have run into this error:

Windows cannot open the required file D:\Sources\Install.wim... Error: 0x80070002

i really am at my wits end :(

    [edit 2]

apparently, the usb drive also has to contain the sata drivers. got that from here (under step 6 - Step 6. Preparing SATA Drivers ):

    Dell Community

however, after i downloaded the four SATA drivers/applications from the dell site here:

Drivers and Downloads | Dell [India]

I still have the same problem. i really am looking for guidance from you fine folks...

    [edit 3]

apparently, the problem apart from the sata drivers could also be the usb3. an obvious way to bypass this is to install with a dvd. if you want to use a usb 2 stick with a usb 3 drive, then the solution is to integrate the usb3 drivers into the stick (is integrate a fancy word for extracting the driver to the root of the usb stick...lets see). i hope in the meantime good soul comes to my aid!

    Hi All!
I have been an owner of inspirion 17 ,7720/ 3D model for a few weeks now,and so far very happy with it.
I installed intels520 240gb SSD and 16 gbKingston RAM no problem here att all.
I hade som issues re-instaling windows using USB as i needed to integrate the sata drivers ,so i just used Windows reinstal-DVD i got from dell it worked, but i hade to get the drivers from dell.com and use USB couse driver-cd didnt work for some reason.
Later this week i'll try instaling OS Lion on mSATA and dual boot with windows ,just for testing.

thats not the PART NUMBER.......thats the order number for your specific order on the keyboard.

the things is...............here in Sweden the UK Backlit vostro 3750 keyboard maybe is RYYJ1..but in USA it can be YXXKY.

you have to call DELL there you live and ask for the right part number..then you know which to search for on Ebay or DELL parts.

I don't know how much more clearly I can say this.

The UK backlit keyboard for the Inspiron 17R SE N7720 is part 87G72

Here is one of the several proofs that the Vostro 3750 and the XPS L702X use the same keyboard. This is the non-backlit UK version. It fits both models and therefore the Inspiron 17R SE too.

Here are a number of establishments selling this keyboard -
87G72 - Keyboard - 103, Chiclet, Backlit, United Kingdom, (Backlit) For Dell Computers
    KEYBOARD NBK - 87G72
Dell XPS L702x UK Illuminated Keyboard (P/N) 87G72

    Take your pick

I've been pondering completing an order for hours now, but have yet to find a straight forward answer yet to something that's holding me back from pulling the trigger. Would I be to replace the mSATA cache drive with Mushkin 128gb card, and use it as the boot drive? I was hoping I could do that, and use both drive bays for standard hard drives. If not, am I better off saving $100 and getting the one without it? I would then just put a 128gb Samsung Series 830 in the primary bay, and move the 1TB drive over to the secondary.

Even if the cache drive can't be replaced with a larger drive and used as a boot drive, would I benefit from spending the extra $100 to use it as cache for the secondary drive? Please keep in mind I would only be using the 1TB drive for photo storage (I'm a photographer), music, and videos. Please help me figure this out, as Dell's quoted me a great deal and I have less than 12 hours to make up my mind. Thanks guys!

    Best regards,

Not sure I can completely answer this, but in my bios order configuration and boot menu it just shows hard drive and second hard drive, so I'm not sure the msata is bootable. I stumbled across this today on eBay that may help if you don't need the DVD drive:

    2nd SSD hard drive Caddy for Dell Inspiron 14R 17R N4010 N4110 N7010 N7110 7720 | eBay

Otherwise you can always get a quick USB 3.0 external drive...

From what I've gathered if you have a SSD in the system you don't want to use the cache drive since not having it set to ahci (to use cache drive you're basically in raid - intel smart response) in bios will not let trim work, there's another thread here about it.

I was just going to use the the samsung 830 or crucial m4 as a boot drive but ive been hearing better things about the samsung 830 then Id move the hdd to bay 2 and remove the msata since I doubt it would be useful and Id like my SSD to have TRIM with it :) Wish me luck with all of this when I do get the computer! Ive been doing my research ;) If there is anything else you guys recommend that I do or be ready to do please let me know!
Sean's Windows 7 Install & Optimization Guide for SSDs & HDDs Ive been following this guide and it seems to have a ton of useful info in it. :) It doesnt much into detail about the whole installing the ssd as boot drive and installing windows on it then installing the data drive hdd. From what I read it wants you to install windows on the ssd first then after its installed insert the hdd into the laptop. I still wish someone could do a full tutorial on installing the ssd/hdd data drive and all the little steps in between. You would have no idea at all of how much me and anyone else looking to do this would appreciate it!
