Bit off topic... I just ordered my 1420. Did anyone choose one of the service bundles with an additional 7% or 10% off any get that McAfee Security Center prog? Just curious if it's worth its weight or did you/will you junk it first thing and go with a different horse? If so, which one? I hear Norton is a dog and ZoneAlarm is still incompatible with Vista.

I know this is a software question but it seemed relevant to the 1420/1520s.

NOD32 is good.. Kapersky probably has the best detection rate.. AVG is good and also has a free version that probably miles ahead of McAfee.. which has a very low detection rate. Norton.. just never install anything from that company.. If you have.. use their uninstall tool which can root out all the symantec files off your PC once and for all.

I'll definitely have to give NOD32 and AVG a look. McAfee never wowed. Out of curiosity does anyone know which version comes with the 1420/1520? Is it one of their boxed suites as mentioned on the McAfee website or a special fondue set Dell cooked up?

Haydss, I'm in Australia and I ordered mine last Thursday. Its already manufactured and in the country and delivery is scheduled for Friday.

8 Days from ordering to delivery is fantastic, I am surprised because they initially told me it would be approx 3 weeks.

I imagine NZ would be part of the same distribution network, you may have it sooner than you think.

PS... Give us our Bledisloe Cup back!

That's great news for you :) I hope I have the same luck. Thanks for the information Grug. My 1420 is still a work in progress at the moment, estimated delivery date of August 6th (monday). If it meets that date i'll be pretty happy all things considered :)

lol!!!!!! We'll give it back if the English can pass the World cup our way ;)

Haha, sorry I was away all weekend ;)

There was a deal a few weeks ago, made the front page of Slickdeals.net

Basically, the EPP site had a mistake. There was this free coupon:

July Deals from Dell! Get your coupon for $300 off the purchase of an Inspiron™ desktop or $200 off a Inspiron notebook priced $999 or more (before tax, EPP discount, shipping and handling) purchased online with single use coupon code1.

And they had this instant discount: Save $289 off this Inspiron 1420 system! - $289.00

And of course the FREE 2GB of RAM upgrade, FREE Vista Home Premium upgrade, and FREE 160GB 5400RPM upgrade that was going on.

Everyone knows Dell CASH OFF coupons do not stack off with INSTANT SAVINGS, but for about 12 hours on July 10th, they did. I got $489 off my order + EPP discount.

My order (and EVERY other order) was canceled for using an invalid coupon. I called up and sweet talked a rep into reinstating my order, and I'm typing this post from the laptop now.

I got a $100 concession coupon out of them too, which I'm going to use for a sleeve + mouse, or maybe put it towards Complete Care (and Free FedEx Air) :) It is not a repeatable deal, so don't worry about it.

Had I gotten black or a 1yr warranty I could have gotten it for under $1000...

    UNIT PRICE $1,542.00

    Save $289 off this Inspiron 1420 system! - $289.00
Save $200 off Inspiron notebooks priced $999 and above! - $200.00
    Dell EPP/FSS customers receive 4% off systems priced $800 to $1600 with 1/2yr At-Home service. - $42.12

    Subtotal: $1,010.88
    Shipping and Handling: $19.99
    Shipping Discount: -$19.99

I found some good news. It appears all of the color delays have gone down about a week (Midnight Blue is only 7 days now), and the WXGA screens also went down (there is no longer a delay for the anti-glare, and a 6 day delay for the glossy).

My latest chat confused the heck out of me. I went from finding out that there was a delay, to that there was no delay. It took me three times to find the answer to what I was asking... So confused!!! I edited out the stuff that wasn't important.

Agent (Varinder Kaushal): "Joe, the order #xxxxxxxxx is estimated to be shipped out on or before 08/13/07."
Joe: "I would like to find out if any parts of my order are currently backordered. Last week when I asked, I was told that the LCD screen was backordered. Could you please update me?"
Agent (Varinder Kaushal): "Joe, actually 14.1 WXGA NON-TL LCD is delaying the order."
Joe: "Is there a time frame for how long that will be delaying it? On the Dell website, it now says that there is no longer a delay for the type of screen I chose."
Agent (Varinder Kaushal): "Joe, Dell being a mail order rule company cannot comment upon any exact shipping or delivery dates."
Joe: "I mean, is there a certain amount of days that the screen is backordered for? I was told long before that it was 10-14 days."
Agent (Varinder Kaushal): "The date that is given is an estimated date."
Joe: "I'm not asking about the ship date, I don't mind that. I am just wanting to know how long the delay is for the screen. In other words, how long will it take for them to get the screen in?"
Agent (Varinder Kaushal): "Please allow me 2-3 minutes while I check my records and get back to you with an answer."
Agent (Varinder Kaushal): "Joe, at this point of time nothing is backordered, not even 14.1 WXGA NON-TL LCD."

Thats what happened to mine too.. I believe boxing is the code name for when its shipped from Malaysia to the Dell facility in the US. They quickly put it in box with cables manuals.. etc.. and put on carrier. I should be getting mine in the next few hours.. Red 1420. Also hoping the IR remote is there with BT travel remote. My case is on DHL and will probably take much longer. They asked me if I wanted free over night on that too but decided to give Dell a break.. I have had a pretty good experience with them so far. There have been some things they can do better but the overseas support has been very nice and professional. I am just dying right now with worry about the WXGA + grainy screen disease.. May not find out today since I will most likely have to go to work when it arrives.. Unless they get here soon.

When did you order your 1420? I placed an order Saturday night before 12 and it's in production in the build phase now. I just want to get an idea how soon I'll be getting mine asides from the ship date of august 14th. Im hoping it'll come earlier.
Nevermind just saw you live in Canada. heh.

ETA ship date was actually 08/20/07
so i think i'll be seeing it much earlier than that =DD

and last time i chcked was about 11 hours ago, which was still in build stage.

Originally placed order on July 7 (in the States). On July 12 I went through the modify department and added 8400m gs and 9 cell battery. Then on July 19th I canceled the whole order and rebuilt the same system with different coupon and added a 11 dollar remote.. I should have just gone through the modify department again but I was so frustrated after talking to multiple reps who did not even know what the IR remote was.. I gave them the part number from these forums which did not help. So when I got home that night on the 19th I canceled system on Chat and built it again on the configuration web site. The next day I called and told them what a pain it is to add a 11 dollar remote and they offered overnight and expediting.

Did you get Dell to expedite your system or give you free overnight shipping? They pretty much give that out like candy. I just told them that I have been basically waiting since July 7 and should not have to wait longer if they cannot sell a 11 dollar remote separately.. So you need to give them some reason why its important to you so they can expedite. Now whether it helps its anybodies guess. To many here that have been waiting a long time with "expedited systems" expediting is a loosely used word at Dell which means nothing. In my case, I think it helped.

I think its almost impossible to determine when you will get your system.. Yes if you have back ordered items it will surely add to the wait. But even those without back ordered systems wait longer sometimes.. Its seems pretty random and difficult to figure out whats going on with system status. About the only thing I can say is once it goes into boxing you should have it pretty quick.. especially if you have overnight shipping.

Is anyone else having problems with their wireless NIC on the 1420's? I have the default Intel 3945 adapter and it keeps dropping out after a couple of mins and then needs a reboot to work again. I tried the latest drivers and couldn't see the network at all then I put the drivers from the Dell CD back on and I still can't see my network....

Wow, reading the first few posts in this thread I thought I had way overpaid, but then I configured the system only and got 1355 pre-tax. 3ysrs service + MS Office + printer + a few accessories really drove up the price...paid 1900 after tax.

    SYSTEM COLOR Jet Black
    PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition
DISPLAY High Resolution, glossy widescreen 14.1 inch display (1440x900)
    VIDEO CARD 128MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GS
MEMORY FREE! 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
HARD DRIVE Speed: 160GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
OPTICAL DRIVE CD / DVD writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
    WIRELESS NETWORK CARDS Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card
BLUETOOTH OPTIONS Built-in Bluetooth capability (2.0 EDR)
    INTEGRATED WEBCAM No Camera
BATTERY OPTIONS 56Whr Lithium Ion Battery (6 cell)
SOUND OPTIONS Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™HD Software Edition

Splurged and upgraded almost everything and plan on using it daily for the next 3 years and get as much as I can out of it. Estimated Ship Date Aug. 15th...hopefully it comes before then though. I leave for college the 13th and will have to change the shipping address (or get a MBP /blasphemy) so I can get it before I leave.

I think I avoided all parts that are backordered so I can't see it taking longer than that. If I'm wrong please let me know.

Does this sound like a good deal? I'm thinking of getting an Inspiron 1420, but I'm not sure if the price is completely worth it:

Ordered 7/18 with a projected ship date of 8/21. Called Monday to see if switching to standard screen would speed things up. Was told that my ship date was still 8/21, and that the change would only speed things up by 4-5 days, so I didn't change anything.

Just got an email that my order shipped yesterday (7/31).

That's a good price. I configured one the same way, except with Bluetooth (+20) and no Complete Care: $1268.

Try dell.ca/epp to get an extra discount.

It's a little better than the Go7400. It can play most games at medium settings. It can probably play games like Guild Wars and Source at max. settings.

I read somewhere in these forums that you can call and get the travel remote, FREE. I didn't get it.

Am i missing something or have they stopped doling it out now.

They are now saying it costs 30 dollars to buy one after you receive your laptop. If you configure your system with the IR it cost around 11-15 dollars. Its better to configure it in when you build your system. Depending on your configuration and how much margin Dell has on it may get you one for free if you hit up the right rep. I think its hard now to get a free IR remote. But give it a try and look at the remote thread for part numbers to order. I think the one you order separately is a refurbished one.. for 30 bucks.. The new one cost less and is new.

    1) My 6-cell battery does not wiggle. I haven't tried by 9-cell yet.
    2) I am dual booting Vista/XP and sound works fine although this can be finicky.

At this point, I have no known issues other than one "Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus" problem in the Device Manager with XP that hasn't manifested any consequence for me so far.

    Bottom Line:
XP and Vista are doing everything I need it to do.

hey guys this is my first post and i am looking at getting the Dell 1420. i configured my laptop with the 300 off 1299 coupon and came up with this setup and i was wondering if this is worth getting, or do you guys think i should wait.

    1420 jet black
    2.0 processor
    vista premium
    high resolution 1440x900 screen
    128 nvidia geforce card
    2 gig memory
    160 HD 7200 rpm
    3945 mini wireless card
    camera
    9 cell battery
    plant a tree
total comes out to exactly 1300 and with the 300 off coupon it comes out to 1000 plus tax.

please let me know if this is something i should get or i should wait, thanks in advance!
