    Someone listed
312-0539 56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery, for Inspiron 1420
in their specs in the "Post about your new Dell" thread.
I can't find it for sale anywhere on the Dell site though.
I think you'll have to call them up.

I just ordered my first dell laptop sunday, and I went with the 1420.

Its just black, with a t5250 intel core duo, 2 gigs of ram, and a 160 gb hard drive. I also opted for the graphics card, just incase I would ever want to run games on it.

I hope that will be sufficient enough, I was torn between upgrading the processor or not.

The ship date was said to be out the 21st, but I did that online chat with a rep thing yesterday because I was leaving for school the 16th and he tacked on free overnight shipping free of charge.

get someone who owns it already to look up the part number in their service tag's list. It should consist of 2 letters and 3 numbers. The batteries are actually really cheap now like $60 after taxes and shipping for a 6-cell

I received a coupon from dell in the mail for 15% off of electronics and accessories, so I canceled my first order and placed a new one. The first order consisted of only the computer for $1447 which was pretty much the same as my new order except I did a one year warranty instead of a two year and changed the color from brown to what I really wanted, blue. I added an mp3 player, wireless mouse, and photoshop for only $40 dollars more than my original order, so I'm happy.

How's the glossy screen on the 1420?? Is it too glossy?? I'm really debating whether I should change my order and go with the matte screen instead.

I just ordered my 1420 today. Here's my specs:

    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 (1.8GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
    Color: Midnight Blue
Memory: 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
Hard Drive: 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
Video Card: 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
OS: Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition
    CD/DVD Drive: 24X CD writer/DVD Combo Drive
Sound Card: Integrated Sound Blaster AudigyHD Software Edition
    Wi-Fi Card: Intel 3945 802.11a/g Mini-card
    Battery: 6-cell

I got a 16% discount because my grandpa works at boeing. Saved 200 bucks.

This is the first glossy I have owned so I don't know what to compare it with. But yes, it is glossy and you will see reflections sometimes. But its not as bad as some people make it out to be. I have no issues with the WXGA + (1440 X 900) screen and like the higher resolution. I have watched some 720P Hi Resolution movies and the detail is excellent. You have to go with glossy if you want the hi res screen. My panel is a SEC made by samsung and it has no graininess and the text is clear. However, the vertical viewing angles could be better. My suggestion is if you go with the regular resolution go with the matte screen since most say that screen is nice. This would be the safe bet for lower resolution screens. If the higher resolution is important to you, then go with the glossy since you have no choice with WXGA + resolution. If you are going to view allot of graphics, games, movies, then the glossy may look better in the lower resolution screen. One thing that I just noticed is from certain angles I can see a very slight ripple effect where they applied the coating for the glossy screen. Under normal viewing angles I cannot see this. But if you look for it you may see it. It all comes down to personal preference and whether you want a higher resolution screen. If the lower resolution glossy is like the WXGA + screen , I would personally go with the matte just to reduce the reflection/viewing angle issues.

The other problem is that dell does not always ship the same panels with every system. Some are AUO, some SEC. I think there is one other one called CMO Chie optronics or something like that. Some panels made in China and other countries.

Mine arrives this week (2 more sleeps).

Was torn with hi res screen, but I have an 8600 with 1920 x 1200 screen and hate it. Can't read anything at that res. Though games are fun with it.

So I got the 1200 x 800 res seeing that is res I run my 15.4" screen and find font size is just right. Also with wimpy graphics card, at least I'll be running most games in the LCD native res (my thinking anyhow).

    Dell 1420
    T7500 w/ 2g ram
    1200x800 glossy
    Nvidia 8400GS
    Wireless N

    Hey everyone-

I'm thinking about going with this laptop. I'm totally confused on the screen issue. Which screen is likely to have the best quality? Has anyone used the VGA output with the 8400 video card?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Thats really up to the users tastes. The glossy will give you brighter, richer colors and movies, pictures will look better. For some, text is better with the matte finish. You might have better viewing angles with the matte as well. If you want the WXGA + high resolution screen, then you have to get glossy.. since it does not come in matte. The glossy will show more reflections, probably not as bad as some make it out to be, but in certain lighting situations it will be more noticeable. There is pros and cons with both.. You will have to make that final decision. Some people really like glossy. Others hate it with a passion.

And yes, I noticed that VGA output on my 1420. Have not tried it yet. Most likely will use the s-video at some point

Went by a Dell Kiosk today and looked at the 1420... it really does look a lot better in person. I notice that the inner silver part (screen and keyboard) actually "glows", for lack of a better word. The micro-satin didn't terribly impress me, though it did feel nicer than the plasticky white lid.

Ordered 7/30... est. shipping 8/21, shipped 8/10, received 8/13... not bad huh?!!! so far, very happy, expect for slight light leakage at the bottom, but I don't even notice it, only when the whole screen is showing black or some really dark color... no biggie imo.

It depends on how long you want your notebook to last and what you are using it for. What you pay for is an increase in speed and larger 4MB cache size. To me that was worth $75 bucks. The 7500 is only a jump of processor speed from 2.0 to 2.2 but with the same front side bus and cache size. Not worth the extra cash.

I went with the 7300 and I am very very happy. It is very fast when loading applications, moving data and running any program. I plan on owning this laptop for a little over 2 years.

    Got mine!

So far I really like it. Thing I really don't like is the head phone ports in front...... Really hate that. I like to listen to music in bed and its really uncomfortable with headphone plug sticking into my chest. May have to get bluetooth headphones as this really really bugs me.

Otherwise I like my specs except now willl need bluetooth card.....

    1420 Black w/ cam
    T7500
    2G
    Wireless N
    Nvidia
    1200 x 800 glossy screen
    160G 5400 rpm
Just need to enquire about getting bluetooth card now.

Does anyone who owns an Inspiron wish that he/she had purchased a Vostro instead? (Or does anyone who has owns a Vostro wish that he/she had purchased an Inspiron instead?)

I have quotes right now for both the Vostro 1400 and the Inspiron 1420 - the two divisions of Dell have negotiated prices over the phone that are very close to each other, so price is not the issue.

I think I like the look of the Vostro better, and having better support from the small business sector of Dell.

I'm not concerned about peripherals such as differences in the software provided, but only about the hardware, including both the appearance and the performance of the notebooks themselves.

(A looser battery, as mentioned in the Vostro, wouldn't bother me.)

It would be a great help to know about owners who would make the same choice for a Vostro again, and also about owners who would choose an Inspiron instead, if they had a chance to go back in time and change their notebook orders!

    Thanks for your help!

well its was probably on the lower end of the grainyness scale, but it irritated my eyes and getting the 1440x900 screen which is supposed to be the best screen for the 1420 it was a dissapointment. so I guess i will still use my Inspiron B130 which doesnt irritate my eyes. But I am weighing the options of going with the 1520 with the highest res screen there but I dont want to run into the same grainyness issues well see i guess.

Just received a 1420 and the display is so grainy and glossy, way to glossy, that it is being returned for a refund. Next question: What should I look at in the other brands? I do not trust Dell to supply a quality screen after seeing this one!

I've got mine and I can't tell if screen is grainy? I think it looks amazing.

I've got the 1200 x 800 glossy, as I think hi res on small screens is too tough on the eyes (I've got a 8600 w/ 1920 x 1200 and that was crap).

Had this for a few days now, think its a really good machine. Bit heavy though and don't like headphone ports at front of laptop. Also don't like power port on side, should be rear and no DVI which is crazy.

Keyboard is great. Touch pad is really good too. Overall I'm very pleased.

    Insipron 1420 - Black w/ cam
    1200x800 glossy
    T7500
    2G
    160G 5400rpm
    Wireless N
No Bluetooth - but want it now :(

I just ordered a HP DV6500. I too returned a 1420 for bad AUO display. The HP's have some great deals now.. There is a 20% off coupon that I believe ends today NB2749 . I ended up with 2gig memory, 8400m, fingerprint reader web cam, blue tooth optical drive etc.. Basically it has everything the dell had but also includes HDMI output. I added two year warranty for a total of $1080 dollars. The 2500 HP is the 14 inch version which also has HDMI (If you add the 8400m gs) and looks about the same as the 6500 just smaller.

This youtube video is good to compare Dell and HP styling. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQB0-9g5H_c&mode=related

I was going to buy the HP a month back but went with dell since the HP was pretty expensive at that time.. Now it looks like I will get the DV6500t and feel pretty good.. One comforting thought is I have not seen one "I got a grainy screen thread" on the HP forums
