Well, mine finally shipped today. Though it seems like they are still sending it to the actual DHL location. It probably won't arrive until after my birthday, the 1st-3rd sometime, but it still shipped slightly early, so I can't complain. I just don't quite understand why people who ordered after me are receiving theirs already.
Also, I probably should have tried to talk them into free next day shipping. ;)

I agree about DHL sucking. Somehow overnight from CA to CA needed to be routed through Ohio and arrive a week late.

I called 1800-CALL-DHL and found that mine is getting delivered on monday. DHL doesn't mention the dely. date in the tracking info page.

I can't wait to undress my new girl friend.

the fan is very quiet from my perspective, it does get it a little warm on the left side where the vent is but i guess that is normal battery life lasted about 2.30 hrs i was surfing the net, using word processor and using skype I do not know how intensive this is but I guess it wasn't bad i really like the computer the only problem is that beeping sound on the headphones it is like you can hear what the computer is doing inside.

Well it is weird because as soon as i got the computer out of the box I went ahead and powered it up when i placed the cursor over the battery it said 3.3 hours remaining but after I started using the computer I saw the time decreasing rapidly, do you think this may have not been a good test and should have discharge and recharge the battery? Also what is the usual amount of time that a computer should last on the battery?

man. dell's a trip. obviously, this is rad news. but it's funny to see how varied people's experiences are in the different stages. i mean really. it doesn't take 10 days to "build" a computer, testing probably is about 30 minutes, and boxing? what, 2 minutes?

This is what Dell should do. change their stages to:
    1. Not yet started (when you're waiting in line to be built)
    2. Building (2 hours)
    3. Shipped (when it has left their hands).

Because really, let just admit that for dell to make a computer takes all of 2-3 hours. it's been stated on a news story, and that was years ago. but i understand that practically speaking they'd have a million angry people if they said, yes, we got your order a week ago, but we haven't done anything with it yet. I don't even mean this sarcastically. if the company's got 10's of thousands of orders to fill (or maybe 100's of thousands in the first few weeks of 1520's / Vostros), it doesn't surprise me that we have to wait in line.

As for me, I'm told my baby is in "testing".

It's entirely possible that it works like an assembly line and they part them in batches of 100.

I think that Windows Vista is the culprit for the worsening battery life in the newer generation of laptops.

I'd put Windows XP on it instead.

I had a Dell Inspiron 6000 that with a 9 cell battery lasted almost 5 hours. And 2 years later could still go 3 hours with the screen dimmed down to about 1/3 brightness.

I think Vista is a failure.

no i think the dedicated GPU and the 6 cell battery is the culprit

and seriously its not bad, 6 cell=3 hours 9 cell=1.5*3=4.5 hours seems pretty good.

I have a inpspiron 1501 with 9 cell, gets about 5 hours on 70-80% brightness while streaming movies off the web.

ok, now im convinced, vista sucks. its been giving me so many problems. i want to install xp so badly, but since the vostro doesn't come with a recovery cd, i cant :(, unless it wont void my warranty. its also a memory whore. when its starting up it uses 95% of it then drops to around 55-60%. im sure when i install 2gb itll get a little better. also got a bsod today, first one in 4 years. i was trying to do a system restore but it crapped out on me.

well, the estimated date on dells website is WAY wrong. The one on your tracking info with the shipper will be right.

    Fedex says 7/30
    Dell says 8/1-8/3
