I ordered my 1720 on 8/1. The ESD is tomorrow. I just called Dell and it is still in the build stage. It has been in that stage for 12 days. Anyone want to take bets about it shipping tomorrow????? I also just noticed Dell put the following on the order status page:
"We are experiencing some unforeseen supply constraints which in turn can delay some orders. Should an unanticipated delay occur, we will contact you to let you know. Please visit www.direct2dell.com if you would like to read more about this situation.
Please continue to check the status of your order by returning to the Order Status page. You will receive status updates more quickly by using this tool than trying to reach Dell Customer Service by phone.
We regret any inconvenience this may cause you and thank you for your patience."
"...some unforeseen supply constraints..." NOT!! how about MANY!!!!

My order has been shipped . Hooraah!
-
Congrats Thomas!!! Tell us how you like it, etc. as soon as you get it. I am particularly interested in your thoughts because mine is about the same config. as yours!
-
it is going to be good no doubt.
but the problem is when is it coming... -
i am getting a ruby red 1720 with an estimated ship date of sept 6, when i ordered aug 7.there probably be another delay after that.i still dont understand why dell is promoting this even further(tv ads, ***$ off).sure they want to make profit, but why not deal with the orders that have been waiting months, or else they probably will lose profit off the people who might cancel their orders due to delay.
-
Yea and they'll lose profit on all the free crap people are getting for having to wait, they might as well just get the one's finished that people have ordered way back when, then focus on promoting again
-
Ordered my 1720 (specs in sig) on August 2nd and has been in the build stage since. Last nite it finally moved to the testing stage, and this morning it is finally in the boxing stage. The end is near!
-
Sorry, I'm jealous. I do hope you enjoy it tho. Wish I were one of the lucky ones like you!! -
I posted earlier, but mine is has been in the Production Stage since the 25th of July. The est delivery date is the 21st of August.
The crazy part (for those who have not read this entire thread) is that my nephew (who lives in the same city I do) ordered his 5 days after me. It's exactly the same system except he ordered white and I ordered blue.
HE has been using his for a week already. It was delivered on August 8th. I continue to wait as of August 14.
That pisses me off in the worst kind of way.
Anyway, he brought his over the other night and I had a couple hours to mess around with it. For those interested in a brief user review... continue to read. For those who are not... stop here.
I have to say I'm very impressed with the 1900X1200 screen. I was worried that on a 17" screen the text and icons would be too difficult to read. I was wrong. The text and icons look amazing at that resolution and the brightness is exceptional. I put my current laptop next to is and it looked like mine was running at about 2/3 of the brightness. In addition, it allows you to have two browser windows open side by side and still view the entire width of both web-pages. Or MS Word open next to a browser, or whatever you want.
We benchmarked it with 3D Marks 06 and PC Marks 05 and came up with pretty decent scores. Significantly better (by about 1000 points) than our desktop machines which are both running 3ghz P4's with 2gb dual channel, 600mhz FSP and ATI X850 XT PCIE. I can't remember what the scores were but if anyone's interested I'll call him get them. More importantly the 8600M GT was VERY overclockable especially with some new 3rd party drivers he installed. He was able to more than double the frame rates on Company of Heros after over-clocking the GPU.
Another thing I found interesting was that the 5400 RPM drive actually performs more like a 7200 RPM drive. When running PCMarks 05 against his desktop machine with a 7200 Western Digital in it, the laptop drive was only marginally slower than the 7200. I'm talking like a few points. So, I was happy to see that because I use photoshop alot and was initially very disappointed that the 7200 drives were not available on the 1720 in Canada. (at least on the Web-Site)
People have been complaining a bit about the weight of the 1720. It was actually lighter than I expected. It was only marginally heavier than my 3.5 year old Compaq R3000 series laptop which only has a 15.4 inch screen.
The heat levels are very tolerable and battery life was and he says he can get well over 3 hours on the 9 Cell.
So anyway, this isn't a review thread I know, but I thought that since I and many others are still waiting for their 1720's it might be nice to hear a little bit about what it is we are waiting for.
I for one was very very impressed with the machine. It's a good thing he brought it over too because I was about to cancel my order as a result of the wait time. Now that I've my grubby little paws one one, I will do no such thing.
Hope this is useful to someone. -
congrats Thomas, must be the color then as my ruby red 1720 still stands on august 30 tired of waiting!
-
When I called today, it said it was in the "kitting" stage!
Keep your fingers crossed for me!!!!! -

jealous.......
i m expecting my delay email -
Hi guys, new user here. I had no idea about how bad the delays were. I was about to purchase a laptop (1720 with all the bells and whistles) in hopes I would have it for University when it started on Sept5. Boy was I mistaken! lol!
I waited for this week hoping to get a better deal for the "multimedia master 1720" but all they did was drop it from 2.0ghz to 1.8, take the webcam off the default spec, and i cant believe they took out the Student Microsoft Office!! All for the same price as last week! Damn !!!
Now, my question is *if* I ordered it this week, would I be lucky to get it by October?? I have no problem in waiting a month or two BEFORE i order. I just dont want the low specs they are offering currently. Do you guys think the specs will get better as the logjam clears after the initial stages of school? (im guessing thats a major reason for the backup) -

Okay... I just went on Dell Online to see where the current delays are at. Good news, Black looks like it no longer causes a delay for 1720's... I tried to spec the 1721's, but Dell's website has been giving me error messages like crazy lately. Here are the updated delays that they have listed for people in the ordering phase...
Color:
Espresso Brown: 17 Days
Ruby Red: 16 Days
Midnight Blue: 17 Days
Spring Green: 16 Days
Flamingo Pink: 16 Days
Sunshine Yellow: 4 Days
Video Cards:
Intel GFX Media Accelerator X3100: 7 Days
128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS: 3 Days
256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT: 3 Days
Wireless Cards:
Intel Next-Gen Wireless N-Mini Card: 9 Days
Not sure if that helps at all, but it seemed like the colors are now causing more of a delay then they were a couple of days ago. HOPEFULLY, this means that people who are ordering now are being given a more accurate idea of when their system will ship before placing the order. And hopefully it also means that some of you guys that ordered colored 1720's will start seeing them go into the real build stage, not just the black hole build stage that seems to be there for comfort. Hope this helps... -

-
bionic_butterfly, I have looked all over for this page @ Dell. Mind posting the URL? -

not a problem. Nothing has changed so far with my system. I'm still listed as being in build, and I haven't noticed the delay go away for the graphics cards...
-
I was wondering if anyone that has Specs similar to mine could tell me if there is a hold up associated with any part of my laptop besides the wireless card. According to Dell's website, the graphics card may cause a delay but when adding it to a system built today it actually MOVES UP the ship date!! Does this make any sense? Also a system with my specs according to the website would ship on 09/13/07! I ordered mine last week and it would have only made a 3 day difference if I waited until now?? It seems like the 1520's are shipping out faster but I haven't seen much about the 1720's... I'm a very impatient person...
-
bionic_butterfly Notebook Consultant
i think the only delay would be your graphic card... right now it's still 7 days for the intel integrated that comes standard, and the 2 NVIDIA GeForce cards are a 3 day delay...
-
-
I guess that would explain the shipping date actually moving up when I selected my graphics card. Coincidently, my original order date was the same as yours, but that order was canceled by Dell for no reason. My second order date was 08/11 which was in turn canceled because my DPA account was closed due to "non-activity"...and it was a new account. If it wasn't for the Inspiron looking like such an attractive bargain, I think I would have given up by now.
-
cause dellnewbie also has 1720 blue
so
its coming soon -
should be coming, as of 10pm last night mine went to BOXING, is still there this morning but i dont think i have to worry about what others have mentioned, in regards to the phantom order backpeddle. "crosses fingers"

well not sure if it made a difference or not but when i chatted with dell yesterday around noon he said he was gunna expedite the order, now i know they have sad that a million times cause they even said it to me like 20 days ago, but maybe they actually have some play with orders now again, figure is worth a try

I'm jealous of everyone's order that seems to be moving... by the time they have my graphic card... the lid will probably be a delay again! GRR!
-
dude, thats integrated, so that means they lack the motherboard, not the graphic card
-
bionic_butterfly Notebook Consultant
i'm guessing that means it's worse than I originally thought... LOL! Thanks for the info... I don't know much about parts when it comes to certain things on a computer...
