Sounds like you got a lemon. I would return it for a full refund.

    Update-
Had mine for @2 weeks, opened it a few days ago and the power button was orange, computer wouldnt boot, fan ran on high.
Called Dell on Wed, they scheduled a repair onsite on Monday, tech came out swapped out mobo (i wouldnt do it if I had to) and fan is still running, Dell called and scheduled new replacement while tech was still here.
Not happy, but service superb (so far).

Do you have a lot of flex with Pearl?

My Onyx is a better build to be honest.

i have some flex on my keyboard, but don't have another adamo to compare it to. doesn't bother me though, don't even notice it. (am a touch typist though so i don't really look at the keyboard while typing).

Yep, the Pearl they sent me was a totally lemon. It took four flippin hours on the phone with customer service (I was literally re-routed to the same person 4 different times) but they sent a replacement unit overnight. They didn't have anymore Pearls and so they sent me an Onyx one instead! It's looks so much nicer though I personally feel that the Pearl had better construction. I have both in hand and I believe that the Pearl has less flex in its keys, the base metal is more solid and has more heft to it, and there's an annoying flex on my Onyx's lid.

Laptop is great but I have to say the viewing angles for the LCD is horrible compared to my old laptop.

CPU bumped up from 1.4 ghz to 2.1 ghz, Ram bumped up from 2GB to 4GB. And no, it won't play any games from last 5 years or so - it uses intel integrated graphics.

Received my BLACK adamo exchange today for my PEARL original because they don't have pearl, haven't opened yet, waiting to hear their reward options for me keeping something I didn't order.
Anyone with the Onyx please report fingerprint etc. issues please.

Fingerprint issue isn't that bad in my opinion. They replaced my pearl with an onyx and I'm pretty damn happy they did. In my opinion, it looks a lot more sexy.

    Hey, new to this forum.

I'm keen on this laptop, The 1.4, 2GB onyx model is available in the UK (not direct from Dell) but from online reseller for £499. which is about 800-850 dollars US..

I was going to get it when I realised Dell US sell a new spec 2.1 with 4GB ram for 899 Dollars!!!!!
This 2.1 model doesn't seem available in the UK...

Anyone from the UK had any luck finding or ordering a 2.1 and how much are u paying??

Separate question. I currently use a 2.2 Core 2 Duo 2007 Macbook. Has gma4500 graphics chipset and 4 GB ram. It runs pretty hot when watching HD movies.. Can anyone confirm if the 1.4 or the 2.1 play HD movies smoothly and without the fans going haywire? :D

    thanks for any advice..
    cheers

I got my second Onyx 2 days ago but the lcd screen of the new one (2.1GHz) has a yellow tinge to it (I got my first Onyx, 1.4GHz, in August). Anyone received an Adamo recently? Does your screen have a yellow tinge to it? What can I do about it?

Typically a yellow tinge means magnetic damage to the panel.. (in my experience).. although it could a calibration issue... There are test patterns you can download and then adjust the screen. I've done it in Super user menus on TVs but never with a windows PC.. I'm sure someone will be along with instructions :)

Hmmm, I'll see what Dell can/will do about it. The yellow tinge really is disctracting...

There's only 1 Adamo 13 although they could have used different parts. The one I got in August has a different trackpad than the one I just got (has a circular pattern). Additionally, I think the SSD in the one I jsut got is noticably faster than the the one I got in August.

What about battery life on the new updated Adamo? What battery life are you guys getting? Thinking of getting the Adamo or the HP Envy. The battery on the Envy will last 3-4 hours...what should I expect from the new updated Adamo line?
    Thanks! :)

Yes, there are 2 different versions:
    • The original Adamo 13 launched Jan 2009 - notebook design
    • The new Adamo XPS launched July 2009 - clamshell design

I need to contact the tech support, but it always takes lioke 30 mins just to be transfered to different departments.... they keep transfering me to inspiron/studio department.... is there a separate department for adamo that i can refer to?? is there any extension or phone number directly for adamo support???

this is so ridiculous... it takes them 20 mins to find a number for adamo department, only to be wrong..

your help will be much appreciated.

Actually, there have been a few iterations of the Adamo.. starting from 2008. The Design of the body is the same.. but the internals are different.

There was the Adamo Admire - 1.2Ghz processor and 2gb ram.
The Desire, 1.4Ghz processor and 4Gb ram.

These were the 2 options released at launch.

Dell dropped the price a number of times and provided various configurations of Hard drive size and amount of RAM,, but they stopped selling the 1.2 Ghz model pretty sharpish coz no one wanted it at their extreme pricing.

Now they have recently updated to a 2.1 Ghz process and offer a couple of different options of HDD size... Some online sellers are selling off the 1.4Ghz with 2GB of RAM.. clearly old stock and with the 2.1 selling so cheap direct from Dell they aren't worth as much..

The Adamo XPS was a totally different, super slim laptop also from Dell....

mandarina duck makes a sleeve specifically for the adamo. the adamo has unique dimensions for a 13" laptop so other sleeves will have too little or too much room.

    good luck.

dell had it on clearance for $10 a while back, but it was that way for a while, and seemed to come in and out of stock, periodically. I don't see it on the dell home website anymore, but you could always call their phone number and ask them to check stock - sometimes inventory isn't listed. You're looking for Dell Part# A2166986.

Otherwise, I'd go with a generic from meritline as mentioned by another poster, earlier in this thread:

What the heck, why is it that when I pull my adamo out of my laptop bag the led light on the speaker bar is illuminated? I always shut down my computer so there is no reason for it to be on. It's like the computer is now turning itself on because when I open it up everything is illuminated and the starting windows screen comes on without me ever pressing the power button.

Is this the result of the quick boot option being enabled in the bios?

BTW, I've ran no official tests but in my opinion battery life sucks for this thing. Just surfing the net I get maybe 3 hours with the lowest brightness and bluetooth off.

i'm not sure about quick boot, but mine isn't doing what you're describing.

as for the battery, my totally non-scientific, untested guess is between 3-4 hours, kind of standard for my expectations (i don't trust any manufacturer's estimates, and usually divide it by half. if they claim 10 hours, i figure it's good for 5.) i'm okay with anything 3+ hours.

Nope. cpu and ram upgrade can only be done by replacing the entire mobo. the ram is integrated in the mobo and this is how they keep things so thin.

    Question!

So if i just received adamo straight from dell, it comes TRIM enabled right? i was googling and went to command prompt and typed in some commands which gave me value "0" which apparently means that trim is enabled. Anyone know if adamo comes trim enabled from the factory?

also if i reinstalled the os, or used the ssd in other non adamo laptop, does trim get disabled and i need to turn it on manually?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Depends which SSD you got, as well as the firmware for the SSD.

Use the freeware program CrystalDiskInfo to find out if your SSD is TRIM enabled.

From what I understand, to implement TRIM, you need:
A SSD and SSD firmware that offers it
OS that supports it (Windows 7 does automatically I believe)
Driver for the SSD (AHCI) that supports it

Damn, I have no one to snap this deal for me at the moment :(. (Europe)

BTW; Pearl is a big letdown for me. Compared to Onyx, far worse build quality, feel and key flex. Sucks.

I am keeping my older Adamo and getting rid of Pearl.

I've read about keyboard flex on the Pearl but don't understand why the build quality is far worse. Also, isn't the Onyx a really bad fingerprint magnet?

I just got an Onyx. To those of you with this adamo, is your palmrest area / keyboard surround awfully coarse? Compared to the front and bottom brushed aluminum, my palmrest area is much rougher, running a fingernail along it files off my fingernails...kind of unpleasant, really. The aluminum on the outside and bottom are much smoother.

Just wondering if this is by design.

    Thanks!

I love my Adamo, but lurking in the back of my mind is the big question mark. What's going to happen when the inevitable day comes to replace the 'battery', i.e. the whole bottom cover?

I suppose Dell will not be long providing parts for this soon-to-be abandoned model. I also doubt that any third party vendors will be offering replacements for this 'non-user replaceable' battery.

So will we have to resort to a chisel and glue gun to fabricate our own batteries?
