    If you tell me what "720p mkv files are and I can get one, I will try it for you. How's that for not knowing tons of tech stuff.?

    IMHO--this is the best keyboard I have ever typed on--like it better than the thinkpad keyboard even and the mac keyboard too.

    I'm glad to have found this forum!

    I just ordered a Dell Adamo PEARL 2.16GHz/4GB/256GB SSD notebook from the Dell website on 11/6 with an estimate ship date of mid December.

    I re-checked the order status page this morning to discover the ship date was moved up, and I'll be receiving my order on 11/17 (with standard shipping)!

    I'm very excited to receive this laptop soon, and I'll be looking forward to putting it through the paces. I ordered a Blu-ray drive from Newegg and a DisplayPort -> HDMI Cable from Monoprice, so I'll see if I can figure out if audio over HDMI is possible, too.

    I'll keep you posted as to how the new notebook performs!

    Yeah that's definitely me :) There's nothing like an old school ghettoblaster with some new school tricks:

    @ tissot
    I'd be more than happy to check for 720p .mkv playback. Do I still need the codec to play it back using VLC?

    @ eihcir90
    Yeah, seeing such a delayed shipping date initially was kind of a gamble. But I'm glad Dell came through and built it fast. As long as you order before the Christmas rush, you should be in the clear.

    Which version do you recomend?

    ONYX or PEARL?

    I have not seen any of the two.

    My 2.16GHz PEARL arrived today! Initial impressions/observations:

    It looks great (duh)
    BIOS confirms that the 2.16GHz processor has 6MB of cache
    BIOS confirms that the 4GB or RAM operate at 1066MHz
    The 256GB SSD is a Samsung PB22-CS3

    I'll do some more testing once I get the OS configured to my liking.

    Having had both the Pearl and the Onyx, I can say that both are beautiful in their own ways. I don't think you'd be disappointed with the looks of either, BUT, if there is any downside to either, it would be the ONYX. It shows fingerprints and palm prints (skin oil and grease) whereas the Pearl you don't get that. Also, I find the letters on the keyboard of the ONYX practically IMPOSSIBLE to read. Sure, it's backlit, and that works fine in a dark or dimly lit room, but where there is ambient light, those keys are very hard to see. The letters need to be a brighter white.

    Personally, I like the looks of the PEARL and it's embossed design on the cover. Very cool.

    @lancorp

    Care to comment on the battery life? (broadband enabled if possible). I've had the original adamo (su9600) that lasted ~ 2 hrs browsing the web. :(

    How about the display? Is it the same as in older adamo? (poor contrast, poor angles, clouding backlight). Any pictures?

    How hot does it run? (or how often does the cpu fan run)

    Thanks

    PS. you can use everest to check on details, such as battery type and capacity, display model, etc.

    Not sure what you are asking of me since I have the original Adamo also (but SU9300). Your question leads me to believe you think I have the newer 2.1Ghz model???

    FWIW, with underclocking and with wifi on, I get close to 3 hours on my Adamo. I don't think it has any fans, does it? If it does, it's never come on, nor has it needed to since it's cool as a cucumber!

    I tried Hulu HD (480p) on my SU9300 Adamo last night. An occassional skip, but it just seemed like the frame rate was slow. I don't think with the slow CPU and the integrated video, that we can do HD video streaming. I couldn't find on Netflix where to get HD videos.

    I did download Adobe Flash Player 10.1 from adobelabs.com. It claims HD is possible on notebooks and netbooks.

    What does Hulu use? Adobe Flash or Silverlight?

    Hulu = Flash
    Netflix = Silverlight

    Did you run your tests after installing Flash 10.1? BTW, Chrome seems to play Flash a little better than IE or FF.

    Yes, I did, and used IE 8 with Flash 10.1. I believe Flash 10.1 said that Chrome was not compatible, hence I had to use IE 8 (which I hate).

    It's compatible you just have to d/l the plugin for FF (and Chrome). IE takes the active X plugin. IE8 is the worst performing browser of the bunch.

    Nope. Hulu HD (480p) is lousy in Chrome. Slow frame rates, and the sound is not synched. IE8 isn't really any better. Tried it in both fullscreen and normal mode.

    Hmm that sounds a little disappointing since I watch hulu regularly on my larger notebook

    @duffy

    do you mean results are better in vista then win7? since I am using win7 ultimate at the moment

    side note...
    does anyone else's lid not sit perfectly aligned with the base?

    after further inspection I noticed there a tiny bump on the raised piece for opening the lid and some scratches on the hinge and with the lid not being aligned I am wondering if the previous owner bumped it and warped it :/

    is this something I can tell dell about since certified refurb only mentions possibly scratches?

    I was trying to figure out why lancorp's flash performance is so poor. Vista is more of a resource hog than XP or Win 7. The SU9300 isn't the fastest performer out there, but I've read where lesser machines are capable of playing back full HD flash now with 10.1.

    Not sure. Streaming off gigabit ethernet, on COX with a 25/3 pipe, so bandwidth shouldn't be an issue.

    I tried an episode of HOUSE and the audio lagged and the video was at probably half the normal frame rate (maybe a bit more).

    I tried it on my desktop (a Core i7 based PC) and it was (of course) flawless.

    I definitely have only 10.1 flash (plugin and active-x).

    Do you have an Adamo? If so, you can easily try it yourself and report back.

    I would say if you are still within your 21 days, then if the base seems warped, that is a valid request for a replacement.

    As a matter of fact, I had received an Onyx Adamo from the outlet whose base was so visibly warped, that from the side, the back and front of the lid touched the base, but there was at least 1/8" gap in the middle and you could see how the base was bent. Of course, the bottom cover was also dropped out at the front (the front base latch was broken), and the thing had been through some obvious trauma. Dell sent a replacement which took about 10 days. It took me calling them to ask "w-t-f" after 10 days and interestingly the replacement shipped that night.

    You can keep your current one until you receive the replacement. It's an advance exchange.

    They just hand them out no questions asked :)

    There is a counterbalance weight near the touchpad of the machine. Yeah they had to add weight to the machine. If you go to the "other" thread I posted a link to the service manual where you can see the machine stripped down.

    I base my comment on having purchased 300-500 PC's from Dell each year for the past 5-6 years, and in my experience (and the fact they did change their return policy), on the rare occasion that I want to return something, it's next to impossible, especially lately.

    Maybe I should hire you to return my PC's?? ;)

    And, those SSD's aren't exactly off-the-shelf type SSD's... it's just the SSD circuit board...so even upgrading that is not easy or cheap.

    Regarding my damaged lid and hinge, after 3 hours on the phone with Dell they agreed to send me an exchange! However it will take 2-3 weeks, on the bright side if they cannot match my machine I will get upgraded :/
