Dell e1505: The Good, and the Bad
The Good:
The laptop so far has been great. The MCE 2005 disk was shipped along with it and I reinstalled everything. Dell also includes a Media Direct Disk which helps ensure the partitions are set up if you want to use Media Direct 3.0 after the OS Reinstall.
Screen is GREAT! WSXGA+ is very sharp and easy to look at for text, browsing, games, DVD, etc. Windows MCE includes a demo video that is in HD that looks stunning! Windows, Dell, and IE7 both include great tools for scaling the font up, so no squinting at small fonts. So you get the advantage of the 1680 x 1050 resolution without the squinting.
Other specs:
T7200
80gb 7800 HD
1 Gig Ram
x1400 ATI (very fast)
Draft N (seems ok with b/g wifi)
The Bad:
I ordered the Keyboard Spill-Cover - which fits, but covers up the exhaust vents. The Dell tech said that this may cause the laptop to overheat. I mean it actually has "grooves" to fit in and cover the exhaust vents - so it's actually made to cover them - how stupid! What's nice is that Dell agreed to credit me the money without having to return the item.
Interlink ExpressCard Remote: Defective. Getting it replaced. Does anyone else have this? How do you like it?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -

Just purchased a DELL Inspiron 6400 N series, Intel Core 2 Duo T7200, 1GB RAM, 120 GB HD, X1400ATI, Free DOS.
Dell includes only one CD with drivers and utilities.
Price 1596 USD
I bought Win XP prof for 185 USD.
I installed XP as Dell said in the manual but I can't use the Media Direct buttons.
When the computer is off and I press the MD button, the logo Media Direct is on for 2 seconds and after that is hanging.
When I am in XP and press the button the OS tell me that the Media Experience software is not installed.
Dell did not include a Media Direct Disk which helps ensure the partitions are set up if you want to use Media Direct 3.0 after the OS Reinstall. -

Where did you buy your computer from? Why did it cost so much? -

I didnt want to worry about the thing self destructing or something and having to replace it for at least 3 years. Maybe I'm just paranoid

What a great idea for a thread! I just bought a new XPS M1210 (ordered on the 23rd, arrived on the 29th). Specs are:
Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2 GHz, 4 MB cache, 667 MHz FSB)
2GB DDR2 RAM at 667 MHz
80GB 7200 rpm HD
256 MB Nvidia Geforce Go 7400
8x CD/DVD burner
WXGA display with TrueLife
A/V package
9-cell battery
15 mo. McAfee subscription
1 yr. warranty (with XPS support--not sure how wonderful that really is)
I work online, travel a lot, and occasionally do some semi-hard core gaming (although I've gotten better since I kicked my WoW addiction). This is to replace my Dell 700M (bought in pre-production a couple of years ago)--broken by Dell out of warranty service (still waiting for my replacement which I'm just going to sell at this point). I love Dell computers, but hate their customer service.
Original cost of this system was $2115.76 with taxes (free overnight shipping was included), but I got $159 knocked off for the Dell associates discount bringing the total to $1956.76 (18 months no interest on XPS with my DPA).
After my 700M (1.6 GHz Pentium M), the M1210 just seems to fly. I ripped 62 CDs the second afternoon and evening that I owned it. I've also had quite a few games on it just to test it out. I love the look and the feel of the system. My screen actually seems to be pretty good. I was worried about it with all of the negativity floating around about the screens for this model, but I just have some minor light leakage around the bottom--no dead pixels, good viewing angles, etc. My one and only complaint would be that my left click button is a little squeaky sometimes--I'm hoping that will work itself out with use. Even with the graphics card and more powerful processor, it runs cooler than my 700M. Basically, this thing is my new baby--I'm so glad I shelled out the extra money to get the M1210 over an E1505.

A little pricey but man what a beast, you have every options!
Congrats! -
I recieved my e1705 on December 27th and I am very happy. I went with the matte screen and I am thrilled that I don't have to look through the reflections. I didnt ask any questions but I have been reading these forums for over a year and I am thankful for all the posts.

I'm not a big gamer, in fact the only game I played in the past year was Civilization IV. I purchase a Compaq V2000 nearly 18 months ago and it served its purpose well. Then a friend told me about a game called The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion. After seeing it, I bought it. At the time I didn't know that much about graphics cards and 3d graphics. Come to find out after I bought the game on direct2drive that my Compaq powered by its ATI Radeon Express 200M wasn't capable of playing the game. Then I discovered Oldblivion and it served its purpose for the last two months. But I wanted the true Oblivion experience and talked myself into buying a new notebook computer. After extensive research on every aspect of what makes up a computer. It came down to the Clevo N570U and the Dell 9400. Because of price I decided on the following Dell:
Dell Inspiron 9400
2.0GHz Core 2 Duo (T7200)
1 GB 533MHz DDR2 RAM (immediately upgraded to 2GB 667MHz)
80 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive (Plan to upgrade to Seagate 100GB 7200 rpm)
GeForce Go 7900GS <-- Most important upgrade
After one night of Oblivion all I can say is WOW. This game on this computer ROCKS! The default settings for a 7900GS were ULTRA high quality with some of the sliders turned back (grass shadows off). There is such a difference from the Oldblivion version I was running on my Compaq. The setup with bluetooth and the DVD burner cost me just over $1400 with taxes and free shipping. I bought the 2 GB RAM at best buy for $90 each and plan to sell my 2 512MB that came with the setup on ebay. After I upgrade the hard-drive to the 100GB 7200 rpm Seagate the total for my top of the line notebook will be around $1700. I don't think you'll beat that anywhere. The Clevo with similar configuration and specs would have cost me over $2100. -

Awaiting delivery of a new XPS M1210 from Dell Outlet.
Core 2 Duo 7200, 100 G 7200 HD, DVD burner, Truelife, 2 GB Memory, 256 MB nVidia, Bluetooth, camera, wireless.. for ~$1550 delivered. Should be here tomorrow!! WOO HOO!!
I bought it as a better travel notebook than my Smartstep 250 (reliable roadwarrior, but pretty heavy, and getting a bit long in the tooth), that I hope will outperform my HP DV8000 in horsepower and video capabilities for gaming (D&D online especially) -
Got an e1705 pretty well tricked out:
Intel Core 2 Duo 1.84GHz
2 GB RAM
80GB hard drive
Phillips DVD +/- RW drive
ATI Radeon X1400 Mobility
54 Mbps Wi-Fi
Media Center
boo-koo of useless software in a bundle
Free Vista Upgrade (still have major reservations about using it)
Dell MediaDirect (uh, woohoo?)
Anyway, pretty slick computer (I'm especially lovin the six USB ports b/c i wanted this thing to be powerful and peripheral-friendly enough to replace my desktop), but I have one problem. My Enter key has somehow become dislodged from the keyboard. I placed the two legs of the uber-thin hinge back under their rings and pressed the button hard until I heard it click into place. It's fine for about a dozen presses, showing no hint of a problem, and then it will just randomly break off again. Anyone know how to fix this as its really getting on my nerves and, quite frankly, for $1900 I shouldn't have to settle for trying to jury-rig it...
Also, I've heard that Dell can be exclusivists about hardware. I'd like to upgrade the mediocre X1400 card to a GeForce Go 7900/7950. Do I have to go through Dell or can an aftermarket card be put in this notebook? -
Well, ummm... meh, never mind. Good luck with your card upgrade.
So I got an E1505 with a T7200, 1 GB ram which I plan to double in the future, 80gb hdd, double layer dvd r/w.
NIB on Ebay, $979. -

I believe you can only replace with whatever was offerd on the 1705 originaly. Theres a whole post on it somewhere,do a search for gpu upgrades. It's good info on dedicated,intregrated.....GPU's -
After much research, I decided on the following machine. I know I could have gotten the 1505 for a small price increase, but I am in the military and price was a huge factor. I will be using the machine to surf the net, listen to music/DVD's and a little bit of word processing.
This is a refurbished machine, did I get a good deal?
Also, I do not think they will have to build the machine, so it should get shipped quickly, right? I ordered it on the 13th and it said it would be shipped on the 22nd.

Just bought a Latitude D820... after waiting for a Lenovo Z61m for nearly 2 months that still hadn't shipped as of today.
Decided to go looking on Dell's Academic site through my school and found a nice deal on a D820 with Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz), WSXGA+ LCD Panel, 1 Gig RAM, 512MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 120M TurboCache, 160 gig HD (5400 rpm), XP Pro with Vista upgrade and the 8X DVD+/-RW Drive for 1477.35 with tax. Not a bad deal at all... -
Just got my shiny new M1210 this morning. 7200 C2D, nVidia 7400, 80G 7200 rpm HD, 2G 667 ram, bluetooth (I'm about to rip the ****ed thing out, I'm so mad right now), XP Pro w/Vista upgrade, DVD +- RW, webcam, Works 8.5, 36 mo. PC-Cillin, and, of course, all of the rest of the bloatware. $1596 delivered from Dell Outlet. (CA sales tax - ugh!)
With the exception of the Bluetooth, I'm actually very pleased with my shiny new machine. However, Dell's tech support was only able to partially help with my issue of trying to get it to sync and transfer files to my PDA/phone.
I'm still trying it out. WAAYYY more powerful than my old Smartstep or DV8000.
I was told that they're going to release the Vista update at the end of the month, so I pointed Dell tech support to Angrymob's M1210 w/Vista post as a place to see some potential problems/solutions. -
From the time you ordered the machine, how long did it take to receive it? Mine was ordered on the 13th and is still in production. -
Just got my new XPS M1710

and i got it for only 2300$ on ebay -
Still using my Inspiron 8600. Two years and still going strong. Was thinking about getting either a fully loaded xps M1710 or M1210, but went with the Superman laptop instead. Should be shipping this week or next week.

Just bought an E1705. Here are the specs. Can't wait to get it!!
Intel Core 2 Duo processor T5200 (2MB/1.6GHz/533MHz) (I saved on the CPU to spend on the ram and video card)
17 inch Wide-screen WXGA+ Display for Inspiron 9400/E 1705 (1440x900 is plenty for me)
2GB, DDR2, 533MHz 2 Dimm, for Inspiron 9400/E1705
256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS
120GB 5400RPM SATA
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (I'll use the vista upgrade
SoundBlaster Advanced Audio for XPS M1710
Added the bluetooth module.
After the 20% off coupon I spent $1397.54 before taxes.
Looking forward to giving the wife my Compaq V2000z and joining the Dell crowd -
Congratulations on the system. The processor may be a little slow if you want to take advantage of the speed of the Go 7900 GS. RAM is easier to replace than the processor, and speding a little more on the processor is better. Although, if you are placed with the decision of a T5200/Go 7900 GS and a T7200/Mobility X1400, I would happily take the T5200/Go 7900 Gs, as you have done.
-
Yeah that's pretty much what my decision was. I could spend the money on the processor or the video card...so I went with the video card.

Hey Jeff.....I got the same deal but I called Dell and got them to throw in the 3 yr RTD with complete care warranty for $2999 (with taxes).
at any rate, its a good deal either way considering how much the XPSM1710 costed several months ago. -
I 've had the machine in my signature below for almost a month now. I am really psyched about it.
I am glad that I went with the WSXGA+ screen. It took a little bit of getting used to the smaller fonts, but the screen real estate is awesome for multi-tasking and the picture quality is superb.
Even though I don't really use Media Direct, the media buttons on the front of the machine are really great, I use them all the time. The sound quality of the built-in speakers is pretty nice too - but sometimes I find that they get blocked by my wrists when I am typing on the keyboard.
Build quality, while certainly not perfect, is more than adequate - the case is solid, the keyboard is crisp, and the screen hinges are secure.
As soon as I got my machine I uninstalled all of the garbage software that came on the machine. I found that it ran great once I did this. Last week I did a complete reinstall of XP, and even though the process went smoothly it did take a lot of time, and I'm not sure I notice that much of a difference. If I had to do it over again, I might just wait until I was ready to upgrade to Vista in a few more weeks.
All in all I am really pleased with my new machine. Thanks to all of the people that have helped make this site such a great community and a fantastic source of information. -
Received my D820 today.
When I checked the online invoice, adn it said it was shipping with the Samsung svreen.
But it looks like I received the LG/Phillips. When iI check the system it gives me lpla900 as the hardware ID.
Anyway, I really like the D820. Screen looks great. -
I ordered my Dell Today
e1705
Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB Cache/2.00GHz/667MHz FSB)
17 inch UltraSharp Wide Screen UXGA Notebook Screen
160 GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
2 GB DDR2 SDRAM 677MHz (2 DIMMs)
256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS
8X DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability
1500 Wireless Card
Would have run me about $2,643.00, but with the EPP site discounts and help from Lumberbunny over on the Notebook deals page, I was able to get the price down to $1,865.95. I think its a pretty good deal and I am so stoked to get my new laptop.
I have a question tho, is the 1500 Wireless card as good as the IntelPro one Dell offers? I must admit that I did not research wireless cards very much so when I saw that it said high speed I just thought that it was better/faster. Anyone have any idea? -
Order a nicely loaded Latitude D820 on 1/15 and received it on 1/19 (fast service!!).
So I've had it for almost a week and I love it. It's very fast. Got it with Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz), WSXGA+ LCD Panel, 1 Gig RAM, 512MB NVIDIA® Quadro NVS 120M TurboCache, 160 gig HD (5400 rpm), XP Pro with Vista upgrade and the 8X DVD+/-RW
Only issue - the resolution on this screen is borderline too small - and I hate running XP at higher DPI because of how bad it makes icons and such look. I'm really glad I didn't get the WUXGA panel, that would have made everything absurdly small.
other than that, a great machine for what I need. -
Hi, robbirzell. I ordered the same machine but a different name inspiron 6400 the day before yesterday. can't wait to get it!
But the estimate delivery date is like 02/05~ still a week to go~
I'm from Ontario, BTW -
What do you think about my 6400?
