I just got my new Dell a little over an hour ago. It's so nice. I love the display. I've never used a display this crisp. The 1920x1200 resolution doesn't bother me at all. I turned the scaling off for Internet Explorer and the images look normal now rather than blocky. I can see so much on this thing.
I haven't checked out the amount of bloatware this thing has. I'm not exactly sure what should go and what should stay. I'll see about getting rid of it once the excitement of wanting to toy around with it wears off.
It looks like I have the MS Office software installed on my laptop. I didn't order it. It asks for a Product Key, which I don't know if I have. I don't know if it's the same product Key I have for Windows, which is under my laptop. If it's not, then it comes installed but is not accessible.
Half Life 2 is finished updating. It's time to try it out. I will be back here with more info.
Later. -
If you look at your invoice, it probably says how MS Office Trial is included... I remember that on mine.
-
Yeah, the bloatware was astounding.
I had a trial of Office installed. It was running some version of SQL Server.
2 hours after being taken out of the box... that thing was under the reformat knife. -
I haven't installed my Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Writer yet, because I keep thinking I'm gonna clean this baby out first. I have almost a thousand songs to move over from my tower too, as well as all the other programs I DO use. I did install the LinkSys wireless router though and it was no walk in the park, so hesitant to have to do that again.
I've uninstalled McAfee, and a couple of the other programs that came on the laptop and I know i won't use, but am now stuck with making the decision to reformat. I really hate all of the extra crap.
Guess I'm thinking out loud here... thanks for listening! -

BO YAH! -
Got my E1705 yesterday and I love it... the display, especially considering I was used to my old 15" CRT, is amazing. Runs like a dream...
Only thing is my case I bought doesn't fit... said it was for 17" notebooks, but this thing is a little too massive. I love it though, glad I went for the 17 over the 15 -
After waiting a very long time and debating other models, I finally ordered my E1705. I was looking at a Gateway NX860XL and even tried to see if I can greater discount when they saw the below configuration but they would have charged just over $2K. Only difference was the gateway is upgradeable to 4gigs, which I don't see myself doing, 7200RPM HD, 667mhz RAM. I read all the threads and I don't believe I was going to see a great benefit.

For $1762.92 excluding shipping and taxes.
This is including a 20% off EPP and I got an additional 10% off with a Military Advantage Card. Didn't really want the Trend Micro Internet Security suite but this was the cheapest configuration I could find. Dell also bumped me up to Next Day Shipping for free. What do you guys think of the deal. -
Did you try the regular consumer models with the 25% coupon?
Using the 30% coupon, I got the lappy in my sig for $1250 and it seems like the E1705 was arond $1500.
To some degree I wish I had gotten the E1705, but, still, you're right, for under $2000 it's a good buy. Most other brands get well over $2000 when you put a decent video card in them. -
I did compare the EPP Personal Purchase Site to the Home/Home Office site and the prices were near identical, so I decided to take the 20% the system configured price and add the additional 10% coupon to the Dell Configured price and it came out to such a reasonable number I opted for the additional gig of ram from 1 to 2 gig. Well now that I have purchase it I'm not going to sweat the price anymore. I have been doing that for quite some time. And checking prices and applying coupons can make a man go mad.
-
Looks like you got a backpack (be sure it fits the 17", I've heard some sold with the 17" dont!) and the 2 yr virus, so, the price is pretty good.
It's a fine laptop and you got the 3 year warranty... -
I just got my laptop on Tuesday, same config as yours except I got the 7200 RPM 80GB drive. I love it so far. If you are looking for a good backpack I recommend the mobile edge premium.
-
by the way some people have said that they have upgraded E1705 to 4GB of RAM.
Price is OK. Config is too. The only thing I would recommend is upgrading the HD to 7200RPM if you notice any slowdowns. -
4 Gigs I would love to be able to upgrade to that sometime in the future. Everywhere I look it shows only 2 gigs but if it could be done with a bios upgrade that would totally rock. Can you show me a post with that info?
-
There is only two memory banks so you would have to use 2 2GB sticks, which are hard as hell to find. I don't know if it requires a BIOS update though.
Anyone know where the best place to get 2GB of RAM for my e1705? Right now I have two 512 sticks. -
Just ordered my E1505 and used the 25% off coupon.

I finally ordered The E1705 with...
Inspiron E1705, Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB/2.00GHz/667MHz)
17 inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WUXGA,
2 GB, DDR2, 533MHz 2 Dimm,
256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS
80GB HDD at 7200 RPM
Dell wireless etc... for 1600 shipped.
It says it won't ship until 12/5. I hope that gets bumped up or I am going to lose my mind waiting for it. Once it gets here I will try and start the reformat, I found a part of the website where after October 26th they started including the OS and Driver CD's again, hopefully that is correct. I hope it works out though, now I can't wait for it to get here. -
Mine is coming in TODAY!!!
Dell E1505
One Year Warranty
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz T7200
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, 2 Dimm
256MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory
15.4" WXGA with Trulife

$1,100 shipped. -
Well I did not really expect much when I semi-obsessively checked the Dell website earlier, afterall it had last said it was not going to ship until 12/1. I was pleasantly surprised when it said my Inspiron 1705 had shipped. With breathless anticipation I clicked on the tracking link... "Out for Delivery"! A brief hour and a half later I was looking out the window and saw the UPS truck coming down the road! (No I wasn't at the window the whole hour and a half...) A brief happy dance later, a moment of small talk with the UPS driver about the snow and I have:
Inspiron 1705
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz T7200
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz, 2 Dimm
256MB NVidia Geforce 7900 GS
15.4" WXGA with Trulife
120GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
Intel Wireless
Woot!
I did not see an operating system CD with the package. I sent an email to Dell Hardware support (all chat reps were busy) requesting one.
After a bit fumbling I got the laptop fully on a home network with my desktop.
Video looks great. I should be all set to do my online coursework, and time allowing play some games.
Is there any reason that Dell would not send out the OS Cd's once I ask for them?
Any other tips for setting this puppy up? -
Wilmer -
thats odd. My acer came with win xp but not the CD. I wonder what is up with that as well. Maybe I should call them also?
and what is the difference between the E1705 and the E1505? I thought yours had bigger screen than my E1505?
So you got the basic screen and not the SXGA right? how is the screen? I got the same screen and I hope I'm not disappointed!
Thanks bud. -
hi guys, Im back again
this time not with questions and advises for GREAT helpers like you guys
but with good news: yes ordered my new notebook finally (after 2+ months looking, calculating, thinking ~~ argh..) and with help of everyone I made my decisions. finally~~
main specs are: Inspiron 9400, Core 2 Duo, 1.83 Ghz, Windows HOME edition, 120GB (5400 RPM) (20GB in C:, 100 in D , dual layer DVD +/- writer, 1 x 1GB ram (if needed in future can upgrade to 2 x 1GB), NVIDIA 7900GO video card, Ultra sharp WGXA screen, 3 years complete cover, Blue tooth module, and 17inch bag etc.
-> all for around 16800 rmb = 1650 euro or so.
Expected to receive my new lappie on this week Sunday ^^

Cheers
Cheng -
Nice choice, I really enjoy mine and you will appreciate yours as well.
-
I received my E1505 yesterday.
Core 2 2.0
1 gb 533
ati x1400
80gb 7200
wsxga+
dell 1500 N + bluetooth
sound blaster HD
DVD writer
it came with OS install disk and MediaDirect 3 reinstallation CD. without even loggin into factory installed OS, I booted from MD CD and formatted everything. This process also partitioned the harddrive accordingly.
Then i installed the OS, drivers and Media Direct 3. Whole thing took less than an hour.. the only remaining is media card reader driver... it was not wroking last night. i have to figure that out....
This looks like the best and cleanest way to me to get rid of the bloatware. I strongly recommend this to new buyers.... -
how much did you pay for it?
-
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-DELL-INSPIR...QQihZ006QQcategoryZ140080QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
paid $1100 shipped for it. I feel like I've gotten jipped. -
link doesn't seem to be working. So the specs are:
E1505
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz
2G ram DDR2
ATi X1400 256 MB
dvd burner/cd writer
Windows Media Center
120 G HD
no antivirus
no microsoft office (I have it already) -
thats a pretty good deal imo
-
I paid $1800 for mine without an operating system. You got a pretty good deal. If not amazing, it's still nowhere near being gypped (which is, incidentally, derived from referring to being taken advantage of by gypsy traders, who notoriously cheated or gave you exactly what you asked for, if not what you wanted )
-
thnx you too

What yall think? Good deal? -
to be honest i don't think that's that impressive of a deal.
My laptop that is listed has better specs with better graphics card, and better and bigger screen, for $1100.
Why exactly does the XPS M1210 cost so much over the Inspiron? Just build quality? -
I knew I wanted the 1210 so I was thinkin $1200 was a deal when new it couldl cost me over $2k...

I presume that you are planning to upgrade to 2 GB. Because the RAM will surely form a bottleneck with the latest games. Great notebook I must say, but what's the price?

On first sorry for my english i know it´s not good enough. I´m from spain and recently (today) i bought a dell inspiron 9400 with this specifications:
INTEL CORE 2 DUO PROCESSOR T7200 (2.00Ghz, 4MB L2 CACHE, 667Mhz FSB)
- 2048 MB DDR2 667MhZ
- nVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS 256MB
- 120Gb
- Bluetooth
- 17" WIDESCREEN WXGA+ 1440x900
Principally i´m going to use it for games (bf2, rainbow six vegas, ofp 2, etc) and multimedia (films, photos...). Is a good choice?
Thank you -
Well you didnt list the price you bought it for, so aside from the specifications being great, we cant tell you if it was a good buy or not.
-
Ouch!!! true!!! 1600 is the price of the notebook. Those are the principal specifications.
Thanks again -
moving to Dell "post about your new notebook thread"...
-
I wanted a basic notebook, as an extention to my Dell Dimension 5000 desk top computer, to use around the house on a wireless network (not for playing games). The usual problem - children wont let me have a go! After much searching, I decided on the Dell Inspiron 1300 and waited for a good offer in particular a memory upgrade option. This is the spec I ended up with:
Celeron M Processor 380
Wide Screen 14.1" Wxga (1280x800) Lcd Pa
1024mb 533mhz Ddr2 Sdram (1x1024)
Hard Drive 40gb Ide (5400 Rpm)
Fixed Internal 8x DVD+/-RW Drive
60w Battery Primary 6-Cell 56w/Hr Li-Ion
Wireless Card Dell 1370 Mini Pci
Warranty 1 90 Day Collect and Return Service
I am really pleased with the Inspiron 1300 notebook. The display is good, sound via headphones good and build quality good. Everything worked straight out of the box. The price I paid was £391 ($768), which I thought was a good deal. I have since upgraded the warranty to 3 years next business day on site support service for £56.40 ($111).
I would be great to get some feedback on my purchase. -
Bought a inspiron 9400/e1705 as was getting a bargain but am returning it.
Config : t2300e 1gb ram 80gb hdd x1400 gfx card
Screen was grainy and backlight seeping through on almost all of the display! Horrible! So slow and the gfx card is worse than I thought.
