I posted this in a new thread then I saw this sticky. I'll paste the relevant information re: Inspiron 1720 from Dell Canada.
Ok, so I get my inspiron. Build quality seems moderately good, attractive case, huge keyboard. As soon as I turn it on I'm startled by the just horrible backlight bleed on the DELL boot screen. There's a top and bottom bleed in the shapes of two opposing arcs but what I couldn't believe is the huge column shaped bleeds )( )( looking like that in the middle of the screen. This is _not_ something you can train your eye not to see. It was exceptional. (Nor was it a result of bad settings, I played with the settings for hours trying to lessen it without losing the ability to see the screen, no dice.) Then when I got into the operating system I noticed a line about 5mm running horizontally bisecting the start bar. It looks like there's pressure being placed on the LCD by the bezel and this is a result.
So I use the laptop for a few days, noticing my typing proficiency is reduced and I'm getting spurious window switching. So I finally notice that the B key is failing 50% of the time and when I place my hand on a certain place on the keyboard area the system tasks away from the window I'm typing in. This seems like a sensitivity in the touchpad that may be tranmitted to the top of the notebook.
Then, after gaming for a few hours using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, the game hangs and after the reboot the bluetooth receiver is dead. I wasn't blocking any of the fan ports it was sitting without any obstruction on a coffee table.
I would be very, very wary of these malfunctions on this laptop. I've only had this unit for 5 days and I'm shocked at the litany of manufacturers defects and failures.

philmoscowitz, that is very very sad. I am sure you have read many people's posts here in NBR about grainy screend, some may even actually have had your problem. Another thing I read though is that there was a certain large amount of Inspiron screens, which all came in the same batch that had screen problems. Yours may be one of the.
Either way, contact Dell, as much as I would hate to tell you that, but its the only solution. Unless ur willing to accept the unacceptable. They should replace it immediately, and even pay for the shipping back costs. I think you can even harass them into extending your warranty or sending a free mouse for the inconvenience they caused you. Tell them the bluetooth failure has emabrassed you during some kind of important presentation you were making. -
Ok, so concerning my case, called a Purolator CS rep and she said the tracking details do not change during the weekend. Since it ground shipped form Texas, it will take 2-3 days to reach Canada, only once it does will I be notified, and after that it will take one day to reach my doorstep. Fair enough, but could have told us that it doesnt change over the weekend.
Oh, and the reason my bag reached so fast is that for some odd reason, it was sent by air. lol, I wish the situation was reversed and my lappy was sent by air. Cant complain though. -
I have the new Inspiron 1720. I had no problems ordering or receiving it.
However, it came with no information whatsoever about how to use the built in camera. How do I get instructions for using the camera?

My first post may as well be about what I just ordered... I placed the order on Sept. 18, 2007 and it is scheduled for delivery for tomorrow... Sept. 23, 2007.
I will also be ordering a 4 gig kit from NewEgg... I had a brain fart while ordering and wasnt thinking and added an extra 1 gig. Well, I will try and sell that, or maybe keep it around as backup... but I am considering G-Skill or OCZ.
Here it is:

Ordered my 1720 on the night of 18 Sept, and sitting here now typing this on it! So far compared to my 6 year old Inspiron it is amazing. Only problem I've found so far is that the left hand front corner is not resting completely on the desk.

Yo all my first post!

2GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM
160GB Hard Drive

Ordered September 20th
ETA 2nd of October -
ok well ive had My Vostro for a few hours now and I have to say im liking it. ( 7 Days from Order to shipped to Australia)
Ill try to post what I've noticed so far but by no means is this any type of review as I havent had it nearly long enough to do any testing or whatnot. I could include pics too, but I wont. it looks like every other Vostro posted on the net.
Probably the first thing I want to say, as this is my first laptop is how awesome the keyboard feels. I am typing this post right now on it and the Keys feel responsive, have good resistance, they dont feel flimsy at all and all the seem easily accessible and not in any way awkward.
Apparently the keyboard is sealed too, which seems logical.
I havent owned a Notebook before this one, but I have used a few, and I would say that the build quality of this Vostro seems as good if not better than any Ive seen. After all, its travelled half the world in 8 days in a carboard box, enduring who knows what kind of physical torture, and its turned up without a scratch or hitch, which to me, says something about build quality. The shell is quite sturdy, and I cannot feel or notice any type of flex in any area, nor the screen.
The notebook weighs a bit, but by no means is it heavy. Unless I guess you're used to an ultra light laptop. I think the weight is reasonable, considering the build quality and the amount of components they squeeze in.
The screen is perfect, apart from a slight backlight bleed at the bottom ( which I only noticed because I was looking for it at startup) after calibration and raising the brightness i am finding the screen to be quite good.
I havent removed any of the Dell software, I got this Vostro with XP installed, because im not really ready for Vista and this will run My uni appz, without any complications. I tell you, I only got the T7100, 2GB ram and 8600GT, but the machine flies. its faster than my desktop in regular applications by quite a bit ( AMD X2 3800+ 2GB ). I havent tried any games on it yet, havent had time. but its not primarily a gaming machine...
So Overall, so far, so good.
I also have a question.. If I decide to re-install windows, or get Vista at some stage, would that void My Dell tech support or warranty?
anyways, Once I have it set up the way I want, Im going to torture test it for a day or 2 to make sure its not a lemon.
sorry about the long post but as I said.. This Keyboard really rocks! -
Okay, after using the new 1720 for a few hours I have found it to be overall a really great machine. Exceptionally quiet and sturdy. I don't even think it's as heavy as my old 15" Inspiron. Keyboard is fine so far. DVD drive is fairly quiet.
Few annoying things though.
Suffers from the headphone jack buzzing that many users have complained about. Only very faint and you can't hear it when you are listening to music.
The media keys are totally in the wrong spot. They should be up near the screen so you don't bump them with your forearms when you type.
I bought the travel remote and now I've taken out the protector card and put the remote in the Express card slot, the eject button won't stay in. Was a pain on my old machine too, but I always managed to sort it out.
Only problem I have with the screen is that I wish it could go just 2 more clicks brighter. I have a Samsung screen (1920x1200) and have no grainyness or backlight bleeding issues so I'm not going to look a gifthorse in the mouth on that one!
Touchpad buttons could be a little bigger. I'm used to my old ones which were half the size again. I think these ones could be pretty annoying to someone with larger fingers.
Overall, it's just a case of getting used to. Have to fix that card slot button though. -
Yey! just got my Inspiron 1521 , so far, so good! But I havent had a chance to sort everything out yet, net connection, etc.
It's lighter then I was expecting after some people's posts,
screen is really bright, great
Touchpad quite small, but ive found its not annoying me
Paint is fine, but I can tell that the red is going to scratch really easy if im not careful, but im being EXTRA careful, so it's ok.
It's fast, well, as fast as i'll ever need it, and the sound is great!
Battery fits fine and the clasp at front is really secure!
As a complete newbie to laptops, thats about all I can say, but to me it's awsome! -
I've got a Vostro 1400 on the way. I ordered it from the Outlet as a referb.

Hello everybody. I just got my new Dell XPS 1330 yesterday. I ordered it on 9/24/07 and received it in 9 days
-
Finally recieved my new Inspiron 1520 a couple days ago. Specs in my sig.
I will post a full review with photos, video, benchmarks, et cetera in a 'bit' here when I have some free time, but for now some observations:
- The screen is FLAWLESS, crisp, clear, bright, and fantastic in general. It's an AUO, surprzingly - when I opened it up and put it through my LCD testing programs and had a look, I thought I had gotten 'lucky' and gotten the LG, not so, but I don't feel bad, this is perfect.
- The screen is exceptionally fine, I'm VERY glad I didn't get the 1680x screen, as it would've been too small and fine IMO. I have perfect vision and it's just right. The 1280x screen would've been fine, surprizingly.
- No mic noise, none, period. I am not uninformed or someone who 'can't hear it' - I have listened with my Beyerdynamic DT 880's (utter audiophile level 500$ cans) as well as my skullcandy high end in-ear buds, and there is no problem with the headphone jack whatsoever.
- The included webcam and the software with it is fantastic.
- The laptop didn't have nearly as much bloatware as I was expecting... a few minutes removing junk and I was done, no format or reinstall(s) necessary.
- Build quality seems excellent, although the keyboard while nice isn't quite as nice as I had hoped - I really like silent as I can type fast and have big hands.
- 7200rpm drive makes a fantastic difference, and in the general speed and responsiveness of the laptop is easily the best value 'upgrade'.
- 9 cell battery doesn't last quite as long as I would've hoped for (was hoping for about 4 hours with regular use) but still is nothing to complain about, I get about 3 hours.
- Red lid is darker than I was expecting, in a good way, and is difficult to scratch, smudge, fingerprint or otherwise cause yourself a hassle with.
Overall, the laptop exceeded my expectations which perhaps were lowered quite a bit after reading these forums. I'm as discerning about this type of stuff as anyone, and fail to see how people can be so whiney about what seems to be such a fantastic product. -
I just got myself a new 1520, pearl white finish, 2.0Ghz C2D, 4GB memory, 256mb geforce 8600gt, 7200rpm HDD, 1280x800 LCD (BY ACCIDENT! >.<). So ya first thing I noticed was my resolution wouldn't go above 1280x800, because I ordered the wrong LCD (my mistake)! grrrr, gonna have to upgrade that... My second order was to whipe out the HDD and get XP + vista to dual boot. After about a day and a half of installing OSes, drivers, hundreds of updates, software + games everything seems to be running smoothly. The only quirk so far is that games in vista say the driver from the Dell support website isn't the most up to date. Another pain in the butt is the fact that as soon as I plug my external HDD in (USB, has a seperate power source) there is audible noise running through the audio jack. I haven't tested the mic of the webcam yet so I'll see how that goes when the time comes. I bought this system for audio recording on the road, so far all of my software is running great.

Running fine so far ... Really like the look and everything. Just hope this one will be a keeper. -
Somebody can say if this will be a good deal even with the new nVidia DX10 card and the Santa Rosa chipset out but I like to play with all the settings and I can wait until a new card appears and DX10 will be more stronger. Okay this is the deal:
On Ebay
XPS 1710, Intel Dual Core 2 T7600G 2.33GHZ factory overclock feature, 2G RAM,
nVidia Go 7950 GTX 512 MB DDR3, Windows Vista Business, 160 HDD a 7,200 RPM, DVD-RW, Screen 1920x1200 resolution WXUGA, 3 year warranty with Dell Complete Care Plan, Red cover, Brand New not Refurbished etc. for $2,400.00 plus $42.00 S&H... -
Check out the Sager NP5791. It costs the same price as the one on Ebay, but it has Santa Rosa, Intel TurboMemory, and Wireless N. Plus, I don't trust Ebay. -
Im loving my 1420!

AGEIA PhysX PPU
Microsoft Office 2007 Basic OEM
McAfee 36-months OEM
3-year warranty
I work from home doing share trading on the ASX. Have always preferred laptops. Looking forward to connecting the M1730 to my 30" Dell 3007WFP-HC monitor and enjoy 2560x1600 resolution. Also the laptop gives me the freedom to trade when not at home. Yes, even on vacations!!!
Have not played any computer games for the last three years but might just have to start again. The 1730 will replace my Inspiron 9100 which I bought over 3 years ago. As some of you may know, the Inspiron 9100 based on the Prescott Pentium 4 CPU is VERY noisy. Surely the M1730 must have the sound of divine silence compared to my 9100!!! The M1730 has to be quieter just by virtue of generating less heat through my choice of having SSD's.
Just my opinion but I love the look of the XPS M1730, lights and all.
Obviously I don't mind spending this much on a laptop mainly because it is a legitimate tax deduction and a true desktop-replacement. -
Courier company is delivering my laptop tomorrow!! I'm so excited... feels like the time I drove my Mustang off the dealer's parking lot. I certainly don't think anyone in school has a 1730, people are gonna stare when I take that beast out.

well i ordered a dell M1730 on the 13th of October with all the specs that are ment to take for ages to get parts for and it tells me it is in a ship which it boarded two days ago and is estimated to get here on the 25th of october which i am quite pleased with, i think with Australian customers there will not be much of a wait as i have only heard good news about deliveries in australia. Putting an order in on the 13th and getting your laptop on the 25th is quite amazing considering it wasnt pre made when you ordered it. Does anyone know if you get a set price M1730 without changing the system do you get it quicker?

BTW, I have a Samsung screen on my 1720 and it's fine. -
Ordered XPS M1330 17th Oct 2007
Est. Deliver Date 13th Nov 2007
Delivered 24th Oct 2007
Condition Perfect?!
I'm still completely bewildered about how that works, but there you go.
Seems to be an excellent machine, only comment I'd make so far is that it's not worth spending the £35 on the 'Nylon Carry Case' - it's a completely standard Dell laptop case, that screams 'grey suit'. Nasty.
The slip-case that is seen on the you-tube video reviews etc is included in the price without being explicitly included in the selection process, which I hadn't realised.
I am clearly not the brightest button in the tin. -
Hi,
No matter what some people say, the XPS M1730 is a beaut! Been drooling at the pictures for months. I'm in London and ordered it on 13th Oct. It's being delivered tomorrow and I can't, can't, can't wait.........
Just hope it's one of the good screens! -

This is my first notebook and I really love it. Here it is.
Dell 1720 (Blue) w/webcam
T7500
Glossy 1440 x 900
128MB
2GB ram
160GB hard drive
Dell wireless N
Bluetooth
8x DVD,CD burner
9 cell battery
3yr dell complete care
ordered 10/01
shipped 10/6
recieved 10/10
for $1147.00
Maybe I should have gotten the 256 video card but for my needs the 128 was more than enough for me. I really do enjoy using the notebook. I purchased a wireless n router and got the bluetooth adapter for my HP D7360 printer and it works great. -
I got my Dell (in sig) yesterday and it decided not to turn on.
I rang them today and they said that they would send someone out either today or tomorrow. They didn't come today so I expect them to come tomorrow.
They think its the motherboard but I hope not -
Well I seem to have had a rare but fortunate ordering experience.
I ordered a Inspiron 1720 on 10/24 and it was delivered yesterday, 10/31.
Configuration:
Black lid
T7250 2.0GHz 2MB
1920 X 1200 WUXGA screen
1GB DDR2 <-- upgraded to 4GB for $160 from newegg
Dual 160GB 5400RPM HDDs
DVD +/- RW
Extra AC adapter
Black/red laptop bag shipped separate, should arrive today even though it was scheduled not to ship till 12/10...
Everything listed above, $1100.10 after the $425 coupon + $160 memory from newegg. I think I got a killer deal and I absolutely love this screen. Things are tiny but text sizes can be adjusted and it's worth it for me, who does a lot of remote support and needs what amounts to a mobile dual-monitor setup. -

Well, I bought another Dell.
Specs:
Dell Inspiron 1501
AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-55
1 GB RAM
80 GB 5400 RPM hard drive
ATi Mobility XPress 1150
9-cell battery
Vista Home Premium
I know I could have gotten better stuff with the new Vostro or Inspirons, but I wasn't really that concerned about how pumped the computer was. I just wanted the cheapest I could get with long battery life, and from what I've read the 1501 has pretty awesome battery life. It had to be through Dell because I have a preferred account and couldn't have bought it otherwise. So far I'm pretty impressed. -
welp - this is my first post in the forum - how fitting that its in this thread...

Bought a Dell (in sig), couldn't be happier. Ordered Oct. 24, received Oct. 30.
Perfect WSGA+ LG screen, smallish amount of middle bottom light-leakage on a blacksreen, even smaller from the middle top. After a terrifying first run of 3dmark05 (1460), I tweaked some things, got new drivers, and came in with much more reasonable scores on that and 3dmark06. (6000 and 3100, I think)
Ran BF2 at medium everything on whatever is closest to 1280x960 -- smooth and clean. Didn't try high, maybe I will later.
My only gripes come from a train wreck of Vista and EA/Battlefield 2. Gotta run the game as an admin with User Account Control off, on the same account you installed it on. Wasted several hours trying to figure that one out, and luckily there are pieces of the puzzle on the net.
Maybe I'll try reviewing it along with all the accessories I got. -
Bought my last computer in 1995 so I thought it was time for an update.

Received my new Vostro today!
Overall impressions are positive although I seem to be a victim of selective grain on the screen. When I look at the desktop with certain wallpapers the image is crystal clear but when typing on this forum and using other programs I can detect slight blur. It's tolerable though so I'll accept it for the time being. Haven't detected any dead pixels so that's also a good sign. Thus far no CPU whine either. No headphones so I don't know if I'm afflicted with the noise problem.
