Well all the US/Canada orders are made in Asia then shipped over. Maybe Dell should have the Ireland plant take some of the load if they can get them out in a day...

Oh damn, I bought a Dell:

    Vostro 1500
    T5470
Vista Basic (upgrading to Business when it gets here - I already have a copy)
1GB DDR2 (upgrading to 1.5GB when it gets here)
    15.4" WXGA+
    8600GT :D :D :D
    DVD burner
    160GB 5400RPM

Ok, due to some issues with Visa's daily limit etc, Dell canceled my order. I got everything straitened up now though, and they reactivated the order on 09.02.2007. Now my estimated ship date is 09.25.2007.

I like it a little but hate the cons a lot, the keys are annoying, the silver finish on the keyboard is just stupid (its going to wear), grainy screen is grainy and if I want to listen to music then I have to turn it up really loud to not notice the jack noise from inside the notebook itself?!?! I mean seriously I can get teh ASUS V1S for exactly the same price with only battery wear problems, a little grain on the screen, crystal clear headphone noise and a much better lighter build!!!!

people purchasing dells need to look around more

Agreed.... I've been getting frustrated with the fact my 1520 has yet to ship and have been looking to jump ship, but I can't find a better price anywhere else... I got all I ordered for $1400 at the end of the day when the non-discounting price as around $1900... If I could get the same specs from Asus, or anywhere else, for the same price range I'd jump ship...

You can configure a Sager 2090 with everything you have listed, except w/ a T7500 for $1489. Sager stopped offering the T7300 a little while ago, but the price difference now between the previous T7300 and T7500's is like $15.

Well my new Inspiron 1720 showed up yesterday (specs in Sig)

MAN this thing was totally worth the wait. I purchased the laptop because we needed it before my Fiance and I traveled to Europe so we had something to download photos from her Digitial Rebel Camera, plus I needed something to replace my desktop that Fried itself one morning.

Before my PC crashed, I was heavy into C&C3, but it wasn't running w/ optimal graphics, not the lowest by anymeans, but I didn't really have any shading or shadows enabled cause it slowed the game down too much.

Well the laptop can run the game w/ textures and stuff cranked, and shading and shadows @ high and ultra high with no loss of framerate. Talk about a complete difference in quality. The game Is BEAUTIFUL.

Like I said, as long as I waited, I definitely am glad I did.

I love my new 1721; the screen is CHERRY, I have never seen a LCD so sharp and bright, with ZERO light bleed, yellowing or graininess (LC-Philips WUXGA). Even with the fans running it is virtually silent, no processor noise or headphone leak. The blue finish is velvety, almost metallic and beautiful (although I worry about how durable because of that soft sleek feel, it doesn't seem to pick up fingerprints hellaciously though and when it does get prints it wipes right off). It's got awesome battery life so far, 4+ hours when I'm word processing or surfing. When people see it, they're like "My God, that thing is HUGE" but I love that, I think it's hysterical and the weight to me is worth it for the GORGEOUS screen and responsive, nice to the touch full-size keyboard.

Any of y'all others out there who are not gamers looking for a beautiful multimedia machine, you will not be disappointed with a 1721.

I got my 1720 last week... It might be a little on the heavy side, but I'm glad I went with it instead of the 15" screen. It just works better for writing! It's taking me a little bit to get used to typing on a laptop (this is my first) and i'm still learning how to get around with Windows Vista... but other than that... I'm completely happy with my purchase, and I'm glad I ordered when I did, because the prices have definitely gone up since then!

OK I'm posting my thoughts on the i1520 as I've been using it for more than 12 hours. Not enough time for any sever review, but well enough to give some level of first impressions thoughts...

I decided to post this here and not create a new topic since this is the thread for this type of stuff and it is getting a little irritating to see threads like this popping up ever few days...

The specs are in my sig...

In my honest opinion this machine is amazing and worth every penny I spent on it. The screen is perfect! There is no "whine" or anything other than a perfect machine. I'm very happy with Dell on this one :D

This machine retired my old i5160 as it couldn't really handle Vista. It was supported driver wise for everything, but the performance was just too bad for me to be effective in my daily tasks. I'm an extreme multi-tasker who usually has 20-30 applications/windows open at a time. The Mobile P4-M 2.8Ghz and 1.5GB of RAM started to show their signs...

Since I formatted the machine as soon as I pulled it out of the box I really have no idea how it performed with Dell's setup (my install was from a clean Vista Ultimate disk). But the performance of this machine is phenomenal. Nothing lags... Nothing... I'm running Windows Server 2008 in VMWare, playing Launch music videos, a copy of Visual Studio 2005 running, and a few other applications. There is no lag in doing anything even under that type of load... My i5160 would be severely hampered in this situation...

The keyboard is a dream. It is very comfortable to type on and the majority of the keys (like the Windows key) is in the right place (unlike the i5160). My hands will love me for making the switch to this machine.

The WiFi Catcher feature is extremely nice. It pops up WiFi information a LOT faster than Windows ever did. Pretty much instantly shows you the name and strength of every network around you.

As I said I'm absolutely loving this machine! But there are a few things that turn me off. This is my current list (nothing is perfect):

    1. One memory slot is under the keyboard and the manual isn't super clear about where. Took me a few minutes to figure it out since I was in a low light situation. Not as breezy an install as on my i5160. The only side joy is since I maxed the laptop out at 4GB of RAM I won't be doing that hunt again anytime soon.

I can't remember my other annoyance, but it was something minor...

I'm not going to re-write too much of what has already been written. I just want people to know that the i1520 is an extremely nice machine.

Ordered my Inspiron 1721 on August 28th. Status seemed fixed on 'pre-production' with estimated shipping date Sept. 24, but when I checked the status just now it said it was shipped today! Can't wait....

I've had my 1721 for a little over a week and the only 'thing' I'm experiencing is some kind of 'lag' with the touchpad. I'll be trying to move the pointer on the screen with the touchpad, and the pointer seems to be 'locked' in a certain area... make sense? Anyway... was wondering if anyone else had the same thing?

Other than that... I absolutely love the machine... love the way it looks... love the way it feels... very glad I stuck it out and waited. Which reminds me... Dell said they'd send a carry bag, but it didn't come with the computer. Does anyone know if it comes later, or were they blowing smoke up my butt? I'd call them myself, but after the last 2 months trying to deal with them, I'm a bit gun shy.

Hey guys just wanted to thank you for all the useful information posted on this site.

I received my Vostro 1500 three days ago.
    cost me $1042 before tax.
It is a big machine, the display is great (got the LG) LPLF300 according to the hardare ID. Compared to the WSXGA+ on a DELL E1505 that I had purchased a year and a half ago, this is much better. I dont have this near me so I cant tell who made that screen. That also had no dead pixels but whites were smeared and one could also see the waviness of the screen coating when the machine was off.

There is no CPU whine that I can hear and no dead pixels on the screen.
Keyboard and touchpad are also very good. The DVD drive runs smooth and the operating system CD (win XP) was inluded in the box.

The 6-cell battery is loose, having an up/down slack of about 1 mm.
It seems to me that this is a battery issue (the channels on the side of the battery) than the notebook itself. My guess is that there is some variation between different suppliers in the plastic battery casings.

I can not tell anything about the headphone jack noise because I do not use headphones myself. I will probably buy or borrow some and then I will update you on this issue.

There is also the clicking noise coming from the HDD, have not found yet which program needs the HDD so often in order to disable it.

This is definitely a desktop replacement machine in my opinion.
Seems bigger than the previous E1505 I had, although it may be just an impression.

For portability I would go with a vostro 1420 or HP2500 at max.

    Specs
    Vostro 1500/WIN XP Home/ C2D 5470 1.6 Ghz/ 2 GB RAM/ 120 GB 5400 Hdd/ NV 8600 GT/ 6 cell loose battery/Intel 3945 WiFi/ 8x DVD writer
    NO BT/ NO WEBCAM/ 3 YR NBD@Home Warranty
    Total before tax $1042

    Hi

I ordered a Dell Inspiron AMD 1721 with Glossy screen. When I powered it up
it was like looking into a looking glass. All I could see was myself. I adjusted the brightness but still see lots of images of windows, myself, etc. I sent it
    back to Dell yesterday.

Has anyone else been bothered by this really reflection prone screen? I am planning on ordering the Anti-glare screen instead. I find the laptop is very
large compared to my Latitude D610 and the battery sticking out the back is really rather unsightly. Almost indicates a lack of proper design. Not sure what you would get with the two battery version.

I would appreciate any comments on screen, performance, etc.

    thanks
    Dave

I thought about looking into this Vostro model. Can you provide any feed back on how the machine is performance wise, screen glare, noise, weight, etc.

Just picked mine up today from the local Purolator office, 11 days before the original estimated shipping date! A few problems actually getting my hands on it (an "Address correction" was apparently needed, although the box clearly has my correct address on it), but even though I was getting pretty frustrated yesterday, it's all good today.

Just getting to know the newest technological member of the family, but so far, so good!

    I really don't know....
Are the Dell laptops really this bad, or are people crying overly?
Before checking this forum intensively I was quite sure I wanted a XPS 1330.
Now I am really not sure anymore.

Think about it if your happy with your laptop are you going to search for a forum and tell the world about it? but if you had a **** laptop/ loads of problems than your more likely to find online forums to help.

OK, so I ordered on Wednesday the 12th of September- apparently 2 days before the big sale with online purchases ends- which obviously partly turned out to be B.S. For specs see sig. And I also ordered an up to 15 inch (which actually means 15.4) Belkin messenger blue and brown notebook bag, which although a bit expensive, is just gorgeous and, more importantly durable-looking.
-Original ESD for bag was 24th of Sept.
-Actual Ship date for bag was 14th of Sept :)
-Estimated Delivery date now became the 20th of Sept.
    -Actual Delivery date was 18th :D :D :D
Ok, with the bag I was happy.

Now with the more important part:
-Original ESD for Laptop: 8th of October :( I was kinda expecting this after reading NBR's forums
-On the 21st of Sept., without receiving any emails or any kind of notification, I just did a random checkup on my order status. The result:
-Order SHIPPED AS OF 20TH OF SEPTEMBER!!!!!
I went nuuuuuts!! More than half a month before the original estimated ship date!! Who would have expected that from DEll!?!?! I started drooling. Unfortunately, human beings are never satisfied. The reason I say this is because it also stated that the Est. Delivery date is the 20th. Which as of today, means they are 2 days late.
What beats me, is that it took the bag one day to get from some town in British Columbia to my home, whereas my actual lappy has been in transit right across the border from my house for the last 40 hours. I live in Montreal by the way.

Anyways, what I wanted to say is: even though I have become paranoid and check my order status every 20 minutes, I believe that there may be light at the end of the tunnel. Dell may finally have taken into consideration the fact there's an army of Dell consumers out there who have PMS'ed all over the internet at the duration of their waits.

Cheers, and I will be posting a mini review (i.e. not many performance numbers as much as a "The Inspiron 1520 for Dummies" kinda thing) right here on this thread as soon as I receive it.
    God Speed fellow Dellers.
