I ordered July 27 and it shipped August 16, but I have yet to receive it. The red lid and LCD upgrade pushed my order back 15+ days:/ The belkin messenger bag is backordered and I don't know when that will ever get here...

Got my Dell 1520, its my first laptop and my first Dell. After playing around with it for the past 3 hours I have to say I am very pleased with my purchase. It runs World of Warcraft with no problem. I am also pleased with the screen choice of 1440x900 Dells glossy is not bad as the glossy on other notebooks. You can see the reflections but your boddy usually blocks it out so its no problem. Also the viewing angles are awesome I can look straight down the notebook pretty much and see everything.

$879 + tax. Bang for the Buck leader at the moment as far as I can tell. Very impressed with the build quality for this price point so far. I got the LG Philips wxga+ panel. Looks great, no grain that I can see and acceptable backlight bleed.

My only regret so far is that I didn't get a laptop with a touchstick pointer. Touchpads are the suck.

My philosophy with laptops is to buy the minimum spec for the minimum cost to get the job done. I used to buy expensive laptops with extended warranties but while every desktop I've ever owned is still alive and running somewhere every laptop I've ever owned is now dead. I'd rather spend the least amount of money possible up front. The faster processors perform better of course but there is nothing I can't do now with this cpu so I feel the $ saved is better spent towards a new laptop when this one dies. This time next year the T7300 will be considered a dog and something substantially faster will be available for less money.

My last laptop had a Sempron 3300 with 1Gb Ram and a Radeon Express 200M and cost ~$750 in February '06. This laptop is more than twice as fast using just one core and the graphics are probably several multiples faster. The most value is to be had in the loss-leader value price packages that are advertised. That's why I avoid extended warranties as well. To me it makes more sense to buy the minimum spec now and hope for the best. If the laptop dies one day after the warranty expires then all the money I saved by not purchasing an extended warranty now can be put towards a discount laptop that will be substantially nicer than the best ones on the market today.

I probably saved ~$400 by avoiding cpu upgrades, extended warranty packages and other useless doodads and that ~$400 can go towards an awesome '08 or '09 $600 laptop. In other words, I'm the type of customer that Dell hates.

Ok everyone, I have been browsing this forum for a while, and decided on purchasing an Inspiron 1720, which I ordered yesterday, the 26th of August. It sounds like it will take a while to get here, but I will add my information to the collective. The stats are (or will be soon) in my sig.

Hey guys... this is my first post. Have been looking at the site for awhile and the reviews and forums have been a great help in buying my new Dell.

Ordered it last night online. Been racking my brain over upgrades / money to spend etc for the last month.

Here is my final spec list as ordered last night.

    Dell Vostro 1500
    ------------------
    Santa Rosa 2.0ghz
    3GB Ram
    8600GT
    15.4" 1400x900
    120GB HD
    Audigy Sound card
    Bluetooth Module
    Wireless (not N)
    6 Cell Battery

I think thats about it. All up it was NZ$1850.00 (includes a Targus backpack I added).

The 3GB was a free upgrade, also includes a nylon carry case and a Bluetooth wireless headset.

OS was just WinXP home as i already have WinXP Pro and Ultimate.

I'll do my own review when it arrives and post it up.

I was looking at the Inspiron 1720 at first and actually got the same thing in black for 20 bucks cheaper then this one. But since it was financed through Dell and the account is for a small business they said I had to go down the Vostros line. I hadn't even looked at the Vostros, so while I was on the phone with the Dell sales person I looked at them and I actually like the black on black of the Vostros line! The sales person specced a Vostros out exactly like the Inspiron I had built and it only cost 20 bucks more but it is worth it to me for the black on black.

I chose the options based on these factors:
    • Has to be 17 inch with the 10 key pad. This is to be truly a desktop replacement plus it will be carried everyday with me for work to various locations across the state of Florida
    • Under 10 pounds. I am always carrying a desktop with me to replace/repair the computer at the locations I visit so weight is not an issue but 10 pounds was a goal I had in mind
    • At or under $2000.00. I had it under $2000.00 until they threw the $75.00 processing fee in at the end. Close enough
    • Modern gaming card. I would have been happy with the GS model offered by HP but the company wanted the 60 days same as cash that only Dell offered so I got a bonus :) I am not into the latest FPS but I do like to play Live For Speed (racing SIM) and I am using this to replace my desktop at the house as well as at work.
    • 7200 RPM drives. Dell didn’t have this option for me. So I ordered the most decent sized drive and figured I could buy the drive I want and use the installed drive as a spare
    • Bluetooth. I have a phone, mouse and headphones that need this and I hate carrying around a dongle to interface with them
    • Santa Rosa chipset. This has it!
    • RAID. Well this one doesn’t have it and none of the Santa Rosa models do. I wasn’t willing to give up the Santa Rosa and the NVIDIA to have raid on the AMD boards. Nothing against AMD I just don’t like the video options from ATI.
    • 3+ years accidental damage protection. This thing will be going to a lot of places and in and out of the bag many times a day, every day of the week. I don’t mind the extra cost to make sure it is still working at 3 years.

I will update this post when it arrives and add my opinions about it once it is in my hands.

Mine is also still in production in the "Build" stage... Everyone else seems to be getting them sooner, but ah well. I don't think it will ship in the Production stage, but who knows?

I'll be getting mine tomorrow - about 10 days early. Too bad I'll be at work all day; hopefully they will deliver to my condo office!
