I just orderd my first Dell, and it ships tomorrow. Here are my specs... Also, keep in mind that I ordered 2 GB of Crucial RAM from Buy.com to replace the 1GB the notebook comes with. That saved me about $100

So the game of waiting begins (ships 6/13)... I'm pretty happy with the specs:

    - Intel Core 2 Duo T7300, 2.00GHz, 800MHz 4M L2 Cache, Dual Core
    - 14.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA+ LCD for Latitude D631
    - 512MB, DDR2-667 SDRAM, 1 DIMM for Dell Latitude Notebooks
    - Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
    - 80GB Hard Drive 9.5MM 5400RPM for Latitude DX30
    - Touchpad with UPEK fingerprint reader, Latitude D630
    - Vista Business, with media English, Latitude
    - Dell Wireless 360 VSTA Bluetooth Module for Vista Latitude
    - 65W AC Adapter for Latitude D-Family
    - 8X DVD+/-RW w/ Roxio Creator and Cyberlink for Vista Basic/Business
    - Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) mini Card Latitude, Factory Install
    - 9-Cell/85 WHr Primary Battery for Latitude D630
    - 3 Year, On-site Warranty

I plan to upgrade the RAM (2GB) and the Hard Drive (160GB, 5400RPM) as soon as I get the machine (A LOT cheaper using Newegg, save myself nearly $200 doing so and I get to keep the 80GB as a portable drive).

Adam, my helper-man, told me somethings to watch out for when upgrading. The main thing was that you have to call Tech Support to warn them you are doing an upgrade. If you don't and the machine needs repair, they will not service it. Watch out.

And no, I don't know why it says D631 for the screen.

Hope Dell lets you upgrade it from somewhere else. They will probably tell you it will void the warranty. I don't know if it really can....but they might tell you that.

I would have just got the notebook with 1 gig and left it at that for a while. It's not like you will be doing any gaming on a 14 inch screen.

Have fun with your new toy! :)

I was going to get 2GB because I plan to do some Photoshop with it. Vista also consumes a good chunk of RAM and the extra is always nice.

I just received my 1st Dell Laptop on 5.17.07 which was ordered on 5.9.07.

Here are the specs & cost:

    [ Inspiron 6400 ]
    WinXP Home
    1.86Ghz Duo Core proc
    2GB of DDR2 Ram @ 533Mhz
    WSXGA 15.4" screen (1680x1050 @ 60mhz resolution)
    nVidia GO 7300
    120GB 5400rpm SATA Hard drive
    Pioneer DVD-R burner
I selected the basic wireless card, battery, warranty and no bluetooth.
    No additional software/hardware.
    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
    Total cost shipped: $862.50
    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

As soon as I got it, the following night I wiped out all the partitions. Installed WinXP Pro SP2 with 1 20gb partition and used the remaining gigs to make an extended partition within Windows.

The next night I installed Ubuntu following MaximumPCs walkthrough with no problems. Everything's been running smooth as can be so far with my Inspiron 6400 dual boot OS lappy.

I am a bit unhappy about the GO 7300. I should have done my research as I thought it would've outperformed my old Quanta KN1 lappy that has a single core 1.86 Pentium M, 1GB of RAM and GO 6600. Oh well.. no playing FAR CRY for me on my Inspiron 6400. Now to dig up my original copy of Half Life instead.

Pictures to come soon of my Inspiron 6400 with its new skin & STM bag.

    Paul

So I went ahead and changed it to 2GB of 667mz RAM, and was told that the change would put the expected delivery date out a little bit more - to JUNE 14-18TH!!!

However, it shipped Monday and I got it yesterday - I love it! Of course, I had a helluva time getting it to connect to my wireless network at home and I havent completely tested out the ability of the ATI X1400, but so far so good! I feel pretty confident that I got a decent deal for it...

im gonna get an e1405/640m. my budget is ~$1500. anywhere within $30 of that.
    here's the specs...

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667 MHz FSB)
    Genuine Windows Vista™ Ultimate
14.1 inch Wide Screen XGA TFT Display with TrueLife™(glossy)
    2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 DIMM
    Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Size: 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™HD Software Edition
    Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal (2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate)
    8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability

this alone was (in $US) $1401.00 + tax, which ended up $1529.61 with free 3-5 day shipping.

    what do you think?

also, is there a difference between the 640m and the e1405?
    thanks.

Hello all, my first post here. I just ordered a new Dell Laptop. Here's what I got.

    Inspiron E1505

    Intel® Core2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB Cache/2.00GHz/667MHz FSB)
15.4 inch UltraSharp Wide Screen WXGA+ Display with TrueLife
1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7300 TurboCache
    160GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive
    Ubuntu Edition version 7.04
    CD ROM/DVD ROM 8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
    Integrated Audio
    Intel PRO/Wireless 3945a/g
53 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

    $1,418.00

then I had a $500 off coupon to bring the total to:

    $998.34 with tax and shipping.

The only thing I continuoulsy debate about is the screen. I went back and forth and back and forth and back and forth on the display. I was considering the WSXGA+ display, but ended up with the WXGA+ one because I think the text on the WSXGA+ would be just too tiny for me. I think the WXGA+ at 1440 x 900 is a good compromise to the 1680 x 1050 of the SXGA+. The problem is, I never had anything to compare. My wife has a laptop with WXGA+ and I like the look of it, but I couldn't find a place I could look at a WSXGA+ screen. I hope I made the right decision.

I'm sooo mad right now. I got my e1705 last week and today, I went on Dell and re-configured my laptop specs to see if the price changed. I ordered my laptop around 2 weeks ago and if I would've ordered it today, I would've saved ~$250! I paid $2280 (pre-tax) and the same unit I configured today cost only $2020... Argh! I'm so not happy right now. I know the computer market is constantly getting cheaper but not $250 in 2 weeks! Anyone else go through something similar?

That's what I think, too. But the deals and prices on the 6400 don't match those for the E1505. Try configuring a 1505 and a 6400 for the same price - pretty sure you can't do it. The business one gets you more bang for your buck.

And yeah, I ordered a Dell with a business discount code.

Yeah, the pricing is different because two different marketing groups are at work here.

Dell supposedly will refund the difference. I noticed this link on another thread.

I am wondering that too. I ordered on June 10th, and it gave me a June 30th ship date. It's still in production. How could it honestly be taking this long? Normal Dell build times are between 3-6 business days. It's been 8 business days!

The orders with the dedicated graphics cards have longer ship dates than without...

right -- my graphics card is integrated....

just seems a LOT slower than Dell's usual turnaround time.

Hi everyone. Got it on ebay for $935 shipped. here are the main specs:

Inspiron E1705, Intel Core DuoProcessor T2250 (1.73GHz/533MHz FSB)
    17 inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WUXGA+ 1920x1200
    2GB, DDR2, 533MHz 2 Dimm, for Inspiron 9400/E1705
256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS, for Inspiron 9400/E1705
120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive for Inspiron 6400/E1505

All I really care about is processor, memory, good video card, high resolution, upgradeabiliy, and a reasonable price. This definitely fit the bill. I'm hoping that I can upgrade to a 7950GTX and a T7400 processor. Would like some input if this can be done. I've posted this question in the dell section. Thanks.

The system that I ordered 2 days ago is in my sig. Supposedly it has already shipped, but on the order status page the data is "Temporarily Unavailable" for what the carrier and tracking number are.

If I had that kind of cash I would of definitely went that route. I have an E1705 which I am upgrading to the 7950GTX and a T7400 processor which is going to total about $1490 with the upgrades($330 for 7950GTX and $230 for the T7400, and $930 for the E1705). All that includes shipping. About $1490 total...and about $1200 after I sell the 7900GS and the weaker processor hopefully. On the other hand the M1710 just looks plain better than the E1705...and just by aesthetics alone would be worth spending more that's for the sure.

Pretty good deal but you could have the upped the hard disk to a 80 GB 7200rpm..

Though for the games you suggested playin, this config is more then enough! :)

I would go for the 160 G 7200 rpm, but you say that you have plenty of external hard drives... Very good system for a great price, nothing to say.

A review would be nice :)

Huzzah! My e1705 came today. I'm so hyped. I've been spending the past 5 hours downloading updates/patches/fixes and installing all my awesome software. Would you believe that my 100GB HD is already HALF FULL?! Looks like I'm gonna have to get an external one for my Ubuntu install. Has anyone ever done this? I know it's possible, but I'm not sure on the difficulty level. Anyways, I'm gonna go play UT2004 on full specs while downloading Open Office, running a virus scan, and installing Visual Studio 2005.....w00t!
