What, nobody is excited about the new 1420? I just ordered a nicely equipped version of this little gem. The good news: the $350 coupon got me 2 gigs, the dedicated graphics card, Blue Tooth and big HD for about $1k. The bad news: Dell says it won't ship until the end of July. Aarrgh! Now I have listen to everyone crowing about their 1330s while I wait. I know, the 1330 is better, but for my purposes I don't think it's twice as good -- and it would have cost twice as much.

I'm a college student, and I've been on the hunt for the past three weeks. I thought this would be the best deal because of the free 2GB RAM upgrade, the free upgrade to the 160GB HD, and the free next business day shipping (I had to talk to a Dell rep for that one). My subtotal was $897 before I added CompleteCare.

    Inspiron 1420
    Midnight Blue
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)
    Windows® Vista Home Premium
Glossy, high contrast, widescreen 14.1 inch display (1280x800)
    128MB NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 8400M GS
FREE! 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
FREE! 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
    Intel® 3945 802.11a/g Mini-card
    Built-in Bluetooth capability (2.0 EDR)
    Integrated 2.0 Megapixel Webcam
85Whr Lithium Ion Battery (9 cell)
2 Yr In-Home Service, Parts + Labor - Next Business Day
Add Accidental Damage and LoJack Theft Protection to 2Yr Warr.

    - $350.00 coupon

    = $1,186.00
    Final price w/tax = $1,275.28

    I got:

    Inspiron 1420, Midnight Blue
    Core2Duo 7300 2GHz processor
    2G RAM
    160G *7200* rpm HD
    Webcam
    Bluetooth, Intel Wifi card
    14" 1440x900 glossy screen
    6-cell battery *and* 9-cell battery
    DVD RW
    Nvidia 128 MB graphics
    Vista Premium
    TOTAL : $1155 shipped ($1067 before tax)

Started with the base system and today the prices dropped like crazy for some reason. No special warranty or any other hassles like EPP, just the vanilla $350 coupon.

I had already ordered a similar system on 7/3 with lesser specs for about the same money, but Dell keeps messing with the price! :) I called to cancel the first one and they did it without any questions.

    Ship date = 8/9 :(

I ordered today, and my ship date was 8/1. I think Dell just gives very generous estimates to allow for screwups and delays. That way, if everything goes according to their schedule, you think it's early.

Sometimes yes, but i think at this point they will be very close to their estimate, they have huge numbers of orders and are back ordered on a lot of things. They didn't expect this huge of a response and were not prepared, so there are already screwups and delays pushing it toward the estimate.

I am hoping the laptop gurus here will help me read through the following clutter. I have attached a copy of my order at Dell - Ordered July 2nd Est ship date is 7/30/07. I just want to make sure I have enough laptop power to e-mail, lite gaming, working at home and when away, eventually will do presentations for clients using a connected projector, etc. In case it needs to be said, I know nothing about computers except how to call the help line at work.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a little concerned because it looks like I have a lot of junk on there I will not need. I can't get a copy of my invoice right now so I do not know the exact price I ended up with but I did have an EPP discout too, which I do not see indicated here. I know it's a lot of info, and you get asked this stuff all the time so I appreciate your help.

In my opinion I would of atleast went with the 8400 for "lite" gaming but with the cpu and RAM you got you'll be fine. Just don't try to run graphic dominating programs. (like video editing or Crysis)

I second the concern about the integrated video card. That card was created as part of the centrino platform in order to run Aero (glass-like interface on Vista) and not much else beyond that. I imagine you'll be able to run "Games for Windows" stamped games (I think they are meant to run on any computer that can run Vista, but I'm not sure) and many older ones. However, you will have serious trouble playing 3D intensive games like Quake 4, Doom 3, FEAR, C&C 3, and newer ones. Basically what Chewy said I guess.

As for the extra crap, there's a lot you can delete if you want to download other programs. The ISP/Net Zero isn't neccessary if you have an ISP already; the icon consolidation can probably go; Roxio could possibly be swapped for something that rips protected material. DataSafe might be kind of handy and I'm not sure it would be a good idea to delete media center as it might be tied in with a bunch of other programs/drivers. Also keep in mind that there is a lot of paper like the waranty contracts listed, too. Overall looks pretty good.

Only by canceling and redoing the order. This will give you a new ship date and restart the wait time. Also, if its too far along, I imagine you might not be able to reorder

    Just ordered mine yesterday:

    Inspiron 1520

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5250 (1.5GHz/667Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
Jet Black Color with Matte Finish
    2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
Glossy, widescreen 15.4 inch display (1280x800)
Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 3000
    160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, English
Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
    8X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive
    Integrated High Definition Audio 2.0
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini Card
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
    1 Year Limited Warranty
    Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module
1 Yr In-Home Service, Parts + Labor - Next Business Day

    Here was the cost breakdown:

    Retail: $1057
    Student Discount: -$200
    MyDell Gift Registry Discount: -$50
    Dell EPP 4% Discount: - $32.28

    Total: $774.72

Now, when I ordered, I was given the option of applying for the Dell preferred account. If I had taken this option, I could've lowered the price by another 4%. So, I could've have purchased my system for about $743 + tax (if applicable).

    How did I do, guys?

Congrats on no delay on your shipping date! You'll be much happier with the faster GPU. They are just as or more important than the CPU more and more these days.

EnderSaves - Thanks for taking a look at my computer. I do not play any of the games you mentioned so I guess the video card will be okay.

I finally purchased a laptop and it was a dell D531. I really can't wait until it arrives. I just got the standard $699 version on their website. I really want to see how it will perform when I get it. I currently have 2 gigs of ram to put into it.
    YAY!

Hi Everyone, I'm new to the world of Dell :)
I ordered my Inspiron 1520 on June 29th, but the estimated shipping date is July 25th!! I'm a bit disappointed about that. The wait is so painful.
On top of that, I cannot track my order because Dell has been unable to provide my order status since the day I ordered it (which was a week and a half ago). Its as if they have no idea I have a laptop ordered! I talked to someone a week ago and they said it should appear in a few days....How long is "a few days'!??

anyway, this is what I should *eventually* be getting...

I only ordered the 128MB graphics card - will this be ok considering the best game I'll play on here is RollerCoaster Tycoon 3?! Apart from that just web/e-mail/watching dvd's.

I got the one in my sig. Splurges for the AMD, because I didn't feel like saving up more for the Core 2 Duo, and wanted something different since my desktop has a Core 2 Duo, heh :p
