Not to say your 6400 is a bad choice though. I wouldn't want to haul around my 9400 too much. It's not that heavy, but somewhat awkwardly wide and large.
I'm not too sure on the Dell keyboard though. The skin of my finger sometime sticks underneath a neighboring key sometimes. I type with 10 fingers, and when I need to quickly reach my finger way up becuase of a function key or something, the finger that's moving up gets stuck underneath the key that that finger just pressed.
I think I'm somewhat ok with it.
But one thing is definitely for sure:
1) Dell keyboard is not as good as the Thinkpad one, and also not as good as the Lenovo one.
2) Dell keyboard will most likely get 'old' in about 2 years.
However, I've searched for keyboard replacements, and I'm seeing cheap replacement keyboards on ebay.
At the moment, I seem to be able to type pretty decently with it, but I expect keys to start breaking after about a year or so... No problemo, lots of repair options available, because Dell is not like some rogue brand as, say, Sager (woof). -
Well I am still waiting on my laptop... but my mouse is a pretty big deal so to tide you all over til I can say with joy that it has arrived:
RAZER COPPERHEAD
Color - Tempest Blue.
Specs - Rape.
Haha... laptop coming... soon? -
I ordered on Thursday, had a problem with my credit card, and finished it up Friday Evening. Now, it's 'In Production' and at the boxing stage in less than a day.
How long until it ships? -

Got my Inspiron 9400 E1705 on Wednesday last.
T2500 2GHz Duo
1Gb 667MHz RAM
100Gb 5,400 SATA HDD
8xDVD/RW
Intel GMA950
9 Cell Battery
Windows MCE
Have to say, not too impressed. I'm not too keen on the white 'bumper' strips and I hadn't really figured on the sheer size of the thing.
Also, there's a high pitched 'whistling' sound coming out of it every time I connect the AC adapter, and DVD playback graphics are all stuttery/notchy.
Dell,WTF?
This is a refurbished system, but I would have liked to have thought that they get put through stringent testing, before being shipped to a new customer.
I'm currently going through the CAR process, but overall I'm disappointed. -
Hey, I haven't posted before but I've been browsing the forums and the site for a while (it's great btw!)
I just put my order in today after hearing some good reviews about the Inspiron 9400 for gaming and multimedia. I am a Computing Science student and commonly deal with graphics and REALLY dig the idea of the UXGA display. This is my first laptop, however. At first I was going to go for the 6400, but I couldn't resist the graphics card option on the 9400 and the increased screen size. I'm a pretty big guy so the size of a 17" laptop doesn't really scare me either. Battery life shouldn't be too much of an issue as well, as there are plug ins all over University so wifi doesn't kill your battery.
Here's my new rig!

Congratulations! You have qualified for a 25% savings with your online purchase. - $577.00
Subtotal: $1,736.00 CAD
(It came to $1,840.00 CAD including gst)
I would prefer to have the better ram, but it wasn't worth $250 over the upgrade to 2GB of 533 to me. I can always pick up faster ram at a later time. Same goes with the hard drive (Actually, dell only offered a 5400 HD with this deal, seems silly).
On a side note, has anyone had good experiences with configuring the 9400 to get exceptional battery life? I haven't heard much about the nvidia powersaving software that comes with the 7900 gs. If I can squeeze out 3 hours with a 9 cell battery I would be more than happy (browsing/word processing) for when I'm not gaming. Gaming I can totally understand a short battery life and I wouldn't bother without being plugged in. -
I wish it could tell me exactly how many watts it is currently consuming. But the manufacturer wouldn't like that, because then we could start 'judging' the battery and send them in for underperforming. Did I just hit the nail right on its head or what?
Seriously though, is there some sort of setting (under /proc - Linux ps.) that gives away its current rate of consumption.
As for Linux - FC5 runs good. Except for the wireless, it keeps dropping, and I have to manually reload drivers to get over it. Very annoying.
Should I just write a script that automatically repairs a dropped connection, and wait for better Intel drivers?
Oh one last thing. The keyboard is average at best. I can go to Futureshop and click away on every laptop keyboard in the store, and every single one will be either equal or better even.
The skin of my finger, especially after cutting my nails short, gets stuck underneath the key above it sometimes. When you press a key, there is quite a bit of gap between the keys.
I also don't like how the keys are held in place again with stupid weak little plastic clips - they *WILL* break over time.
However, on Ebay you can order replacement keyboards for cheap. Unfortunately though, so far what I've been able to find, is that they say it's been manufactured by Dell. I was hoping to find one that would be a 'better and improved' keyboard for the keyboard lovers out there.
I really think my finger will break a key off soon, I just got stuck underneath one again. -
Anyway, found the wireless problem. The ieee that comes with the kernel is no good. Download and install the Intel ieee thing and it fixes the annoying connection drops. -
Received mine today just playing with it haven't done the reformat reinstall yet just removing junk\bloat, like the screen so far was a little afraid of the resolution of the wuxga so far no problem with web pages haven't tried office yet, hate the white bumpers, applied the skin easily scratches with your hand, ony got an intel centrino duo sticker not a core2duo sticker ain't happy about that, like the speakers they actually get loud enough to hear & pretty clear so far, screen is nice and big, weight doesn,t bother me, keyboard seems fairly sturdy would of liked a numeric pad also so far i'm happy
-
There's a Core 2 duo sticker? I thought they all use Centrino duo stickers only.
dL -
Numeric pad, although people thnk it's nice, I think it sucks.
You never really use the keypad much, and, very important, it makes you have to use the main keyboard area off to the left to much. This *REALLY TOTALLY SUCKS* if you want to put the laptop on your lap. Trust me, that keypad crap that Toshiba, HP, and Sager is using on their 17"es sucks HUGE ! Dell's way better, nice in the middle - and EXACT - no crap. -

However, it is Windows only, but if you look around, you should be able to find something similar for *nix since the battery does tell the system the current power drain....
I was a Linux user as a student....used to love tinkering with my system(s) and would not mind spending hours looking for drivers or troubleshooting stuff....
I still love Linux for its stability and capabilities...Unfortunately, I haven't found any Linux distribution so far that has the maturity level of Windows and with the limited time I have on my hands now, I really cannot afford spending hours on finding drivers or recompiling the kernel ....
Anyway, enough OT ranting...
My first Dell is my new M1210 which I got in July...Missed the Core2Duo option , but do not mind it one bit...and am loving the puppy so far! -
I just pulled the trigger on a Latitude d820
Here are the stats:
T7200
1GB 667 RAM, 1 DIMM
80GB 7200 rpm hard drive
wsxga+ screen
bluetooth
UTEK fingerprint reader
512mb quadro 120m
I got a really good deal through a friend, and paid about $1750 cdn (on the dell website the same computer is $2209 right now.
I am really excited to finally get my machine! -
My e1705, ordered on 9/7 and estimated (yesterday) to have a delivery date of 9/26 or so is now listed as complete and the UPS tracking number given shows an estimated delivery date of tomorrow! I don't know if the tracking website had been flaky or what but man am I psyched.
Anyone have a recommendation for a case for this monster? -
However, it is Windows only, but if you look around, you should be able to find something similar for *nix since the battery does tell the system the current power drain....
I couldn't believe all the crap that came up when I booted up my new 9400. I wouldn't know how to feel secure on that thing even if I tried. No wonder why identity theft rates are skyrocketing. Why do people have to put up with all that. I just don't like windows.
I'm happy to have Linuxified it. I got everything working very well now, fast, robust, and secure. -

Got my new laptop on Tuesday, September 12th. Recently found this great forum. Here's my baby:
Dell Inspiron E1705 w/ the top-of-the-line screen (1920x1200 resolution, SWEET!)

GeForce Go 7900GS 256MB Ram
80GB 5400RPM HDD

That's about it. Think I got a pretty good deal at $1450 shipped w/ taxes. Had a 20% off coupon. Now here's the amazing part. I ordered Sunday, September 3rd!!! It was "In Production" for all of last week. Friday it showed "Boxing", and Sunday it was shipped. I got the 3-5 days free shipping, and it still arrived Tuesday 12th first thing in the morning. AWESOME
Formated the crap out of it, installed Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista Ultimate RC1, and Ubuntu Linux 6.02 on it. Windows Vista runs like a dream, I'm really happy.

Woohoo, my laptop now exists!
I ordered Friday afternoon. Within two hours it had checkmarks on Order Processing and Pre-Production.
Nothing happened on Saturday. On Sunday (Monday in Malaysia?) it got checkmarks on Kitting, Build, and Testing. Now I know there's a real laptop out there somewhere with my name on it! Hooray!
Now to wait three days while they put it in a box (and ship it from Malaysia...hmm...they didn't mention that part in the description of the stages!) Waiting is hard, but at least I know the thing's put together now and isn't waiting on any parts, right? -
Ok, my spill on how I got my i9300. Yeah, when I was looking for my notebook, Pentium 4 was still hitting hard in the notebook sector. Well, I actually was going to get a Compaq that had a 2.8ghz P4, but mom says, "let's go to the Dell Kiosk." There, I fell in love with the XPS Gen 2. The 6800 ultra card was so great. But my mother wouldn't buy into the changing colors thing and all, so we went for a i9300. Specs are in the sig. Yeah, using a 750 off coupon, the final price was $2505.08. That actually was a great price because the 6800 and 6800ultra were the top of the market and Sonoma just came out. I still love my lappy. I'll never give her up for any Core2 machine out there.
-
So does the checkmark mean the stage is all done (so that mine, with marks at Kitting, Build, and Test is now IN the Boxing stage), or is mine currently in Test since that's the last one with a mark?
-
YES!!!!!!!!!!! My new Dell XPS M170 has arrived Specs are as followed
2.0 Ghz Memron C2D CPU
2 Gigs DDR2 RAM
80 Gig 5400 rpm HDD
7900 Geforce GS Go

Normal UK retail price from dell.com should be about 1600 GBP
I got it on ebay fo 1180 GBP now thats a pretty damned good buy in the UK
Now i just gotta find a backpack big enough to hold this tank of a laptop -

I LOVE the snap on you got is that leather?

One question, do you have Interl pro wireless or dell wireless?
-
Dell, i can't stand Intel Pro Wireless software.
-
Wanna hear about a guy with a real problem?
I posted a while back that my lappy was post production....turns out the CSR confused PP with Post Production, rather than Pre Production. So when I thought I was moving along as it turns out they had just moved it from processing....which took 5 days alone.
I ordered mine on Sept 6. Still is stuck in pre production. Core2Duo 7400 is back ordered......so it's the 20th now.....and they have only processed my order.....fricken sucks....
Anyhow, I am an adult and as such will act like one.....I am still too impatient.
They keep giving a date of the 25th, but living in Canada there is no way on this green earth that Dell will make that. I just don't get it, others ordering the c2d7400 are getting their units.....some in record time....
Bah...what the heck I can wait.....does not mean I have to like it.
Again Specs
Inspiron 9400 (e1705 to you yanks)
C2d 7400 2.16ghz
Nvidia go 7900gs
2gig ram
100gig 7200rpm hdd
17" WUXGA
Dell non optional bloat ware installed free of charge
9cell batt
3yr complete care next business day service
am I forgetting something? anyhow that should be it....should be a screamer -
Woohoo, it shipped today, right before noon! Now, the question is, can they get it from Nashville to Texas before the weekend? Does UPS ground deliver on saturdays? *fingers crossed*
-
Ok.....well after complaining last night, I guess some Dell employee's where listening....because after 2 weeks of being stuck in Processing hell the laptop went into production.
Can someone give me an idea of an average number of days in productions. Also any Canadians out there could you give me an idea of how many days from when it's shipped to when you recieved it? I am from Alberta.....
Thanks a bunch..... -
Hey, im from Ontario, my 6400 was shipped last sunday and should arrive by friday. Purolator said it takes 4-5 business days just for it to cross the Canadian border (customs etc) and then you should get it the next business day, dunno if its different for Alberta though.
-Outsider- -
Outsider, why in the heck did you buy a 7300 turbocache?
-
Two reasons:
1) I heard it had better Vista drivers and runs faster on linux than the x1400 (Ill be using linux most of the time).
2) Was only choice with thr offer I chose. -
I just received my new Dell Inspiron E1705, used the reformatting guide, and this thing is really amazing. It costed $1826 after taxes and shipping, and I used the $300 off coupon. Here Are the specs:
Intel® Core 2 Duo processor T7200 (4MB Cache/2.00GHz/667MHz FSB) (glad I waited for this)
17 inch UltraSharp Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 988MHz
120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce Go 7900 GS -
