I just ran your config through the CA website. Came to 1559 + tax. x 1.14 = 1777.26. Close enough.
I really like my $1473 + tax 17" 9400 with the 17" wuxga and the C1D 2GHz.
The 5400 rpm drive is just fine. I think with the 120GB size, I think the drive has to rotate a lot less than my previous 40GB drive from my old 8200 laptop, so I'm expecting a big HD speed boost. Except for booting the OS, most stuff stays cached in memory anyway, and the small amount of writing can happen in the background anyway.
I like your pick too, kind of. I would have shaved off a few things, like take the slower but larger harddrive. It is possible that because the drive has to rotate less to read the same amount of data, that the 7200 rpm thing doesn't buy you anything (this *has* to be somewhat shocking...?) - but get the facts before drawing conclusions (goes for me too).
Perhaps the cpu one notch down to save more. Probably would not have done the bluetooth thing - although - I guess you can use a wireless mouse without a thing sticking out your usb port. I think some cell phones do bluetooth as well - how does that work?
Other than that - definitely 2 thumb way up on the wsxga+ choice over the lame wxga screen.
I actually think that my wuxga is going to be a tad too fine...
I really think though, that people are way to easily taken with the hysteria - and hype.
7200 rpm vs 5400 rpm. Core 2 Duo vs Core Duo.
The industry just loves it. They tinker, and we gather and pick up their crums...
-
Everywhere I read said to expect a 20-30% increase in seek times for the 7200 compared to 5400, probably only noticeable when dealing with large files, but I figured I was buying the best I could for every other part. As for the processor, the 2.0ghz was only 10 dollars cheaper than the 2.16 for some reason! (Only on the 6400 series on Dell Canada)
And the reviews on Core 2 have seemed pretty positive, I read figures anywhere from 10-20% performance increases with similar decreases in power consumption.
I don't even have anything that uses bluetooth right now, but for 30 bucks I figured why not plan for the future.
Overall I'm pretty satisfied, I spent a little extra, but I want it to last me as long as possible. -
I've seen an almost 0 to 23% increase with the C2D, but more like 10% most of the time. I don't know if this 10% power improvement is true. I've read the power consumption is the same.
One last thing about the harddrive disagreement. The small increase in seek times won't mean anything, if the larger harddrive needs to seek less. Imagine if a track on the larger drive is more dense. That means more data per track, meaning less seeking. I don't think the head moves any faster physically.
So, I think it's a matter of rotation speed AND the number of platters (which means data density).
Ah, the industry just feeds us lines, and we suckers sit there and the world for things we *think* is worth something. -
saggy...and the other people posting their prices...especially for the xps m1210....does your price include a warranty? everyone's prices seem to be a little better than mine, but i have a 4 year warrantly/compelte care...so maybe thats it?
-
take a look at my sig...i had to call in to get the price though...and my warranty includes 3 Yr-At Home, 90 Day PC training (okay...i don't care), 30 Dell-On-call (okay...i don't care), and a $100 (i do care).
what did you pay? -
In the meantime, others, that overlook this "special sector section", and also in Canada, where this isn't offered at all (Canada usually is just an afterthought), must shell out $300+ to get that kind of warranty. In Canada you can't even get 4 years, 3 year max. -
-
-Jeff -
Yeah, too bad they don't combine. Otherwise, the price would come out about equal if you got the warrentee wtih the 20%
-
take a look at my sig for the specs
im in canada, so mine was $1,439.00 after taxes and everything...my only regret was that Core 2 Duo came out one day after and to get one with all the same things it was only $45 more...man i hate being impatient!!! and i dont wanna cancel it cause im 15, and my dad got it for me and he will say no and tell me to learn a lesson from this which is not to be impatient , but it will last me at least 3 years, which is how long i want it to, so overall, im really happy -
I'm in the same situation I bought my Inspiron 9400 August 25 and a few days after they came out with Core 2 Duo. Does anybody know if I can return it and get the Core 2 Duo. What kind of return policy does Dell have. If only I would of waited a few more days.......

I *think* the C1D is upgradable to the C2D, simply by opening the laptop, and replacing the chip through a zif socket, just like that. It's pin compatible, and I don't think it requires anything special from the mother board or bios to work.
I *think* it's simply a chip that runs 5-20% faster (not always 20%), with a number of extra instructions and extra registers.
And if it requires a special bios, you could upgrade the bios yourself.
Don't hold it against me if it goes wrong - I take no responsibility.
On the Dell Canada site, I'd had to pay $300 more to the C2D on a 9400, because I found a pre-config package special through a coupon, but only had a non-upgradable (not allowed) C1D. So I opted not too. I'll probably upgrade next year or something.
I don't think you'll experience a lot of difference not having the C2D.
ps. Mine last week was a:
9400 2GHz T2500 1GB 120GB ATI-256 WUXGA 9-cell-bat 1yr-care-bear $1473 + tax.
I figure I'll pay about $300 next year for the Merom.
The reason I didn't cancel now, because:
1) I didn't feel like going through aggrevating sales people, begging for crap.
2) I didn't feel like having to put up with a "discounted" restocking fee of 10% (normally 15% ?)
3) I didn't feel like having to wait extra time (read the C2D will take longer)
4) I feel that the missing extra cpu instructions are not going to hamper anything, because software developers can't afford to not tap the 32 bit market. -
ya, you can call them and ask them to cancel the order and re-do your order and stuff but its too much of a hastle to go through so for me, im just gonna leave it and not look back. Besides, i should even consider myself lucky that i have a laptop cause some ppl dont even have a computer.

Just finished my order on the M90
This is what I got.
Core 2 Duo T7200 2,0ghz (wanted the 4mb cache)
1GB 667mhz ram (had to hold back on this because of money issues and it's the most easy part to upgrade).
nVIDIA Quadro FX 2500M 512mb
100gb 5400 Sata HDD
17" WUXGA (1920*1200)
8x DVD+-RW
Got a decent price, 22800 Swedish kronor. All in all I'm very happy, has taken me one returned laptop and a month of constant research to finally settle. Hopefully the M90 will deliver. -

Hiya, just waitin on my order from outlet, though I think there might be some mistake as similar and even lesser spec'd systems on the site are currently listed at dearer prices.

100Gb 5,400 SATA HDD

9 Cell Battery
Windows MCE
This unit including shipping + Tax cost 755.11 ($970).

Re: a1mint
The configuration on these outlet systems can't be changed before purchase, can they?
Anyhow, I got an order 'acknowledgement form', but with only two days to expected delivery date I was expecting to have 'order confirmation' with a tracking number by now. -
I waited to see if any Labor Day deals materialized...they didn't so I just pulled the trigger on this e1505:
Core 2 Duo T5500
1 GB DDR2 SDRAM
256MB ATU Radeon x1400
80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
8X CD/DVD Burner
6 Cell Battery
$854 US after 20% coupon.
Dell is quoting a ship date of 9/18....what kind of experience are people have these days with regards to Dell beating their stated ship dates? My last laptop purchase back 2 years ago came about a week early...I'm hoping that's still the case. -
How much did you pay before tax, if you don't mind me asking? -
Removed the TV tuner cause it's useless to me. -
i was looking at a few turion x2 lappies w/ 7600s pretty much the same setup for the same price..... so while i havent used an Intel product scince my last 486 packard bell (im a big AMD fan) i figured since i will be gaming with this as well as working with it getting a 7900for the same price was too good to pass up. pluse the high rez 17" display sounds sweet!!! -
-
For some reason the order status of Dell Canada never updates. Weird.
dL -
dell canada irks me sometimes and thats one of the things that does LOL
-
According to Purolator, they scanned it last Saturday morning, the 2nd (???).
It's now in Toronto, so tomorrow is going to be one of those work-at-home days... ;-) -
ya mine still says that its in production but when i called dell they said it was shipped out on the 2nd, so it should be delivered sometime this week or early next week...im so excited!!!!
-
-
I think I might be lucky. Initially, the estimated ship date would be the 9th, that's this Friday. Dell showed "in production" until this morning, when all of a sudden it jumped to "shipped".
The weird thing is that Purolator indicates that they "signed" it in or something last Saturday, the 2nd, which is like Dr Who going back in time... oohhwhoohoooo....tan-dangelang-lang...dang-dangelang-lang.... ;-)
Anywho, today Purolator indicates that it's in Toronto. I called them, provided the pin number (use the #2 button for US to CDN, not #1 for "destined to CDN" option), and told them it will be delivered tomorrow. I'm working at home tomorrow ;-)
I hope you get your lappywappy soon too - we're all fuzzy inside.
I'm mentally preparing on broken pixels or other horrifying things, so I won't actually explode if I have to pack it all up again...
Let's pray - no wait, let's not, let's just hope... -
That would be "they told me that it will be delivered tomorrow." -
lmao a1mint, thats some pretty funny stuff there
but anyways how do u find out from purolator if they have "scanned it in" or whatever? -
their website with the tracking number, now i have been on hold with them for over 35 mins, im getting ticked
-
how do you get the tracking number?
-
go to this url http://ausoladcacm.us.dell.com/ostatus/index.asp?language=E&~ck=pn and put your order umber in, then it will show you the status and near the bottom of the page you will see "Click here to view carrier details regarding the delivery of this item." click that then it goes to the puralotor site with your tracking number.
-
your order number would have been given with the order when you purchased it, if you purchased online then it will be in the email they sent you to confirm the order.
-
Yes....yet ANOTHER inspiron owner.....well, I thought I might as well post my specs.....after all I am more than a little excited....This lappy soooo kicks my home comps a$$
I just ordered.....then got smart and cancelled and reordered a dell i9400. On the reorder I managed to snagg a printer *snorrrrr* media remote (useless since I got XP pro) and a 100GB 7200 RPM hard drive vs the 80GB in my cancelled order, all for $200 less......gotta keep on top of Dell 200buck is 200buck.... )
Anyhow I ordered the following:
i9400 Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 2.16Gh Proc
Nvidia 7900GS
100gb 7200 RPM HDD
2GB 533 Ram (the faster stuff ain't worth it)
17" WUXGA+ TrueLife
XP Pro
DVDburner
Intel Pro Internal Wireless
9cell 80whr Battery
Purchased at futureshop: Logitech G7 mouse
Kensington Numberpad/Calculator
3yr Next business day, complete care, tech service
I am very excited. it's estimating 21st Sept for completion. Seems like a long time vs other crap I have ordered from them. Anyone know why the longer build time? -
Ugh I've been obsessing over laptops this past week. Purchased an Acer Aspire 5102 because I thought it was cheap at CC. Wasn't satisfied with build quality and it stopped working right after a day. Plus I realized it wasn't that good a deal after tax and everything, it came out to about 887 dollars.
Returned it, applied the 20% coupon to my Inspiron E1505. Specs are as follows...
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T7200 2ghz w/ 4mb cache
ATI Radeon X1400 256 mb
512 mb 533 ram (I figure I'll save the money since I'm upping this baby to 2gb)
15" XGA + True Life
8x DVD Burner
All for 945 shipped. I'm extremely excited. Are the estimated ship times accurate or do they sometimes ship faster? I hope I get it before school starts. -
I want to thank everyone who helped answer my questions and bounce thoughts and ideas off of. After 2+ months of researching, reading, waiting, and learning I finally pulled the trigger.

Mighty cheap for the amount of power if you ask me. The cpu was the lowest available option to keep costs down. I will upgrade to a Merom down the road when Vista is out, and there are 64bit advantages. Right now, and for the rest of this year, there won't be much of any benifit going with Core 2 Duo. I debated this quite a bit with some of you and myself. I'm standing by my decision.
The other big decision for me was choosing the right screen. Look, the 7900 GS is an oustanding card and will perfom like a champ. I might have gotten away with good 1920x1200 gaming performance, and I may have ran into some snags. I am confident that 1440x900 will offer me some peace of mind knowing my framerates are good. It will let me run games @ native res and if I have extra gpu cycles laying around, that is what Antialiasing and Anisotropic filtering are for. Also, while the screen may not be as bright, it won't show me a reflection when I have bad lighting in the room.
All in all I am happy with this purchase and hopefully I won't have any buyers remorse when it gets here (OH HOW I WILL COUNT DOWN THE DAYS). -

We both love our new computers. We've had a really positive experience with Dell SB customer service. I intend to write more in-depth reviews later on. -

One thing's for sure! It's pretty exciting!
My lappywappy arrived, and so far it's pretty good.
Not 100% sure on the light leakage on the 17" wsxga+ though. I had the impression that after leaving it one for a few hours, the leakage was getting less... or else I'm going coocooloory.
