V2S-A1 has only one GPU and it's global spec and it's 8600M GS 256MB DDR2.

-It does not support optical bay battery, only V1S does.
-The free mouse is a Bluetooth.

Thanks for the info Ken, that's about what I expected.

Do you happen to have any battery life results yet on the V2s?

V2S-B1 in late October, according to the fine folks at btotech.com.

I decided to stick with my V2S-A1 order, which ships tomorrow! Those graphics scores are disappointing but considering this laptop is being marketed to business users, I doubt sales will be hurt too badly.

well the score was kind of expected i guess.

That is nice that the mouse is bluetooth. Does the 9 cell come with the v2s?

I was under the impression it didn't come with it, I hope I'm wrong.

sorry for the repost but could someone clarify the hard drive partitions?

It says theres a C, D, and F totaling 290gb. Just occurred to me that that you probably had an external hard drive connected at the time of the test...

Is the only difference between the A1 and the B1 a faster processor?

Additionally, is Lightscribe standard on the optical drive?

    Thanks!

    No Lightscribe.
I've seen some wrong specs on the web that looks it's V1S's spec and they just change the screen size to 14".

    FYI everyone,

For some reason Asus reps were on campus today (at York) for Yorkfest, our sort of welcome week for all froshies, returning students etc. I took the opportunity to ask the ETA of a couple of different models in Canada. They seemed to know MilestonePC.com when I they asked where I had bought or ordered mine from.

    V2S: 2 weeks
    U3: 2 weeks
F8: ETA UNKNOWN, they specifically mentioned they were still doing testing on it.

Bah, do I still even want the darned thing, why not an F9 or a W7S!

Also once again, official specs in a NA July 2007 (no idea why its July...) catalog

    Got my V2S-A1 from newegg.com yesterday...boy was i dissapointed..
Actually, except for one thing, the laptop is really good....
That one thing is the gimped 8600GS......It's sad...the XPS M1330 i was testing the other day benchmarked at 1580 in 3dmark06. (and that unit has a 8400GS in it).
The V2S scored just around 1610...which is not much better than the 8400gs M1330. The strange thing is that i tested the F3 series laptop iwth the 8600GS and it scored around 2700 in 3dmark06......
I was after a smaller notebook with some semi decent graphic performance for medium gaming. Well as of right now im staying with the SZ650 from sony as it meets my gaming requirement and is more portable than the V2S anyways....the way i figure it, if i really wanted something better than the V2S, but didnt mind having something bigger i would have gone with the V1S instead.

If only Asus didnt cripple the 8600 in the V2S so much!!
    UGH

Well, this was a well known and reported fact, mentioned numerous times on this forum. I don't know how you could have possibly kept this notebook on order if gaming was a big concern.

Yeah the problem was i didnt read this thread till after i recieved the unit...i just assumed since it had the 8600GS it would be on par with other 8600GS-based machines.

Ouch. Sorry about that...next time you should look a bit further into what you're buying (I see you've been around for a while). I canceled my order almost immediately after I found about the crippled card in Europe. I was still hoping the NA release would be stock (it was a long-shot, I know), as I would have reordered it.

I'm thinking about the V1s now, just waiting for MilestonePC to get some in stock. I went the the Sony Store one day to take a look at the SZ, its a beautiful machine but in the end I can't drop over $2800 on a notebook which offers little in the way of upgradability. I'd rather spend ~$2000 every 2 years or so and keep up with the current tech.

Yeah well i have a few laptops :)
This secondary machine is not to be my primary gaming laptop..just wanted something to be more portable for both work and play...
My serious gaming i do on a sager 9260.
The SZ650 seems to be good for me for now (was under 2000.00 and i doubled the memory myself and replaced the 5400 rpm drive with a 7200rpm drive).
the 650 willhold me over until a 14" or smaller laptop comes out with true 8600GS or GT power. :)

Im in St. louis...but i snagged mine from newegg.com which just listed the model on their website the day I ordered it...I think i grabbed the only one they got in stock at the time as as soon as i ordered it, it went to "out of stock" status

I just want to know if the battery life of the V2S is decent. It is still a nice looking notebook, and even with the gimped vid card, if it has a good battery, I'll consider buying it. =)

My v2s was delivered Friday to my billing location, which unfortunately is not where I live for college. It should be getting shipped up tomorrow....hopefully be there tuesday.

Anyway they finally put the v2s up on the Asus USA site, or they are in the process of doing it...pictures wouldn't load for me and it wasn't really announced in their news. It has the A1 and the B1 models, only difference there is processor which I guess was expected.

Just heard that the V2S-A1 is being replaced with the V2S-B1. The B1 will be priced the same, but will have a bigger processor. T7700 instead of T7500. Problem for me, though--no computer yet. I'm told it *should* be shipped by the end of the week. Still haven't even seen a full review of the V2S-A1.....beginning to wonder if I should look at something else.....!!!

ehhhhh I would post up photos and reviews but I'm in college right now and my cameras at home and I have 3 exams these 2 weeks. sry guys.....all I have to say is that this is my 1st laptop and I"m pretty impressed by it. The build is quality. No dead pixels, Lovely keyboard, The touchpad is really really nice and smooth. Vista works fine...its slim and stylish. The negative: battery life is low. Has some heat. The left vent keeps on pumping out hot air. Other then that its a pretty sweet laptop.

Keeps pumping out hot air? Like the fan runs all the time? That sounds like my elderly Inspiron I'm trying to replace.....ACK. And if the B1, which they say is now what will be shipped instead of the A1, has a bigger processor, does that mean even more heat? I don't know for sure, but isn't heat like a notebook's Enemy #1?

I can appreciate your being busy--thanks for posting--and good luck on your exams.

What do you mean they will be shipping the B1 instead of the A1? So are there any A1's being shipped now or are they all B1's?

Edit: On another note, does anyone know what's a good notebook sleeve (just want foam cover) that will fit the V2S well?

Ok well this is my 1st time owning a laptop so I don't really know whats hot and what should be normal for a laptop fan but it seems to me like it's usually on. It doesn't get unbearable hot though. I compared the v2s to my friends w3j and it seems that the v2s was cooler. But basically I don't know whats really hot and whats not.

Today I called to check on my order for the V2s-A1 which I made on September 11, and credit card confirmed on September 17. I was told that Asus is upgrading the processor to the T7700 and calling them B1s now with the upgraded processor. This apparently has something to do with Intel cutting the price on the bigger processor. I was told I would not be charged extra for this, and that my computer would be a B1 and should be available to be shipped to me by the end of this week. That's all I know. This is silly, I know, but I kinda liked the idea of something called "A1." It's like being first in the phone book, ya know? Silly.

I would like someone to comment on the heat issue and also if the bigger processor would be more likely to create more heat.

"Usually on" seems like that could be a problem, doesn't it? The fans on our 3-5 year old Gateway and Inspiron notebooks don't run all the time. Anyone else have a comment about this?

I haven't ever had a laptop so I don't know that much about them, but honestly I feel that the only drawbacks of the fan running all the time would be noise and lower battery life. Since the v2s is so small and has a gpu and a pretty powerful cpu, I would want the fan to be running all the time so you don't fry anything.

One thing I am curious about is the video card...I think I remember hearing about laptops with integrated and dedicated gpu's(I think it was a sony), and the ability to switch between them (although you had to restart)...which would save battery life when your on the go and dont need a gpu.

Does anyone know if the v2s will have integrated graphics as well, and the ability to switch between the two?

The larger processor should not create any more heat.

It might be, I'd like to see some more reviews of this. However, in general, if the notebook stays cool, then even if the fan runs often it shouldn't be a problem. Overheating shouldn't be a concern if the fans are doing their job, which it sounds like they are.
No, it doesn't have integrated graphics.

Canadian location contracted everyone who canceled their V2s order by email saying it was delivered. Its just so it can clear from their system. However, they do have the units at the Canadian branch now so you can order it and expect it to be shipped out pretty quickly.

My V2S is basically DOA. The recovery disk keeps failing installations, Acronis won't stop telling me their are bad blocks, and DFT fails is with a 0x72 failure (which I believe is SMART related).

The V2S looks like it has a lot going for it. Whether the HDMI port, SPDIF port, spill-proof keyboard, docking station, build quality, portability, stylish looks, good price, or the video card, I cannot think of any notebooks that can compare to the V2S.

But the video card, even though above par, takes the cake for me; Asus has failed to lure the money out of my pocket this time. I will stick with my W3V.

Do many of you feel the same?

same here, video card was a big concern, as it was shown to be weaker than the F3 video card which should be a lot weaker. Delays also plagued this computer. I was told next week every time I called and it ended up being a 2 months overdue. After a couple weeks of waiting and frustration, i just went for the G1S. Probably get a business model when I'm done Uni, or need a professional notebook.

For me, all of the positives far outweigh the video card issue. I don't play games, maybe that's why. It seems to have just about everything one can expect in a smaller notebook. I'm very much looking forward to mine, which has been shipped today!

has anyone recieved the V2S yet and would like to do a review for us? I would like to see how its like considering the weakened GPU, supposedly bad battery life.. etc.

I would love to see a review also. My V2S-A1 has been shipped and should arrive in the next couple of days. But I'm not qualified to do a review. I only just learned about Asus within the last month and bought the computer based on all the advice and recommendations I got on this forum as well as further reading and researching I did on my own, directed by people on this forum. I've been very grateful for the help and direction, because I have been stuck since May, unable to find the right replacement. The V2S has all the things I was looking for, and more. I don't game, so I have less worry than others about the so-called "crippled" graphics card. I just need it to run Vista and my other applications well. And I am already used to staying plugged in most of the time, so if there is lower battery life than other notebooks it won't concern me very much. I actually knew that was a possibility when I ordered. I am guessing that what has been said about the V2j will approximate the V2S, and the V2j reviewer seemed satsfied. Still, a review on the V2S would be nice!
