 Please someone confirm this as true!

Edit: Actually, this would be an excellent reason for the delays.

It doesn't affect us anyway. We are in NA which is different from EU. What I dont get is why Portugal gets a different V2S from germany.

Well all laptops stores here in Portugal are claiming an v2s with Geforce 8600M GT / 512 dedicated, so im pretty sure that its the basic specs for the V2S to Portugal.

I've phoned to the store where i ordered mine and was told me that is, without any doubts, a GEFORCE 8600M GT with 512 dedicated, then i argued that on official asus.com website was written an 8600M GS and the seller again said to me to dont worry about, that the info he got from asus is 100% accurate.

He also sayed that they dont have any estimated arrival date for V2S. So i suppose that this delay are related to graphic card update... :)

Best regards from Portugal and i promisse as soon ive recieved mine i will make an review.

Sorry for bad english.... but i bet you cant write portuguese right, as well :)

I got a call from Gentech, too. No idea if it has the GT. I may consider canceling if it doesn't, because it seems that the V2S may very well have the GT in the future.

i'm having exactly the same problem stevietennis, I want portability with a great processor and an averagely rated graphics card, only problem with all of these is that their pricey if you want all the best bits.

I honestly don't see the point in buying a notebook that I can't take with me without feeling like I'm carrying a ton of bricks (university books already weigh that much).

what are your thoughts on the weight of this beauty?, is the advertised weight before or after the 6 cell battery is onboard?

I've already post this in the V2S vs F8SV thread (not sure if this counts as a double post...if it is sry...) but under the Canada Computers it says the V2S-A1 has a 8600GT with 512MB. link is here

That Chinese one has 3.5G HSDPA, though, so it's definitely not identical to the V2S-A1 that the NA customers will be getting.

I have a question to the 64-Bit Bus.
Usually the 8600M GS has a 128-Bit Bus, right?
If the Asus V2S has a 8600M GS with a 64-Bit Bus, then they must have changed the whole design of the GPU !?!
    Or am I wrong?
And it would be "kind of" unusually to change the whole design of a graphics card just for Asus....
And what could be possible reasons for the 64-Bit Bus?
May be Everest was wrong, u know it is just coded by a human...

64bit bus makes it cheaper to produce, mostly. I think it is more sensible to downclock core if one wants to cut power or heats, but Nvidia may not let them do it. I am no specialist though- you may better ask the same question at Beyond3D or place like that, where there's some specialists on this kind of things.

But yes, with these specification, it sounds more like core-overclocked 8400GS with 256MB ram (unless 8600GS still have more TMU than 8400GS - which I doubt it) - I am not sure what kind of standard Nvidia has for letting companies modify chips and still call it 8600GS. That being said, Nvidia never had this many mobile chips before this generation, so this kind of issue was less likely to happen before. And no, seeing everest report is consistent with benchmarks, I believe it indeeds have 64bit bus. It is a very disappointing move from ASUS.

Ok found someone who has a V2S with the 8600GS and it only got 1536 in 3dmark06!??! is this normal for the 8600GS??? anyways heres the link to it (its just a guy posting pics of some benchmarks and pics of the unit itself). This isn't the NA version or at least I don't think it is as the keyboard says "STG" or something instead of "CTRL" and some letters are switched ie. the "Y" and the "Z" etc...

Uh, that's the German version. Every version of the V2s we've seen has been neutered. I wouldn't expect anything more from the NA version.

    Hey,

I am storngly considering buy V2S in the NA.

I used to have A8j with 7600 512ram and I think it had better score than 3.7 in Vista.

So is 8600GS that is on V2S poor? I really wanna be able to play the fresh games with no lags for half year to a year so what do you think?

    thx,

^ 7600 is much faster. For new games, you will need to run them at very reduced settings, I am afraid.

The 7600 will have about the same amount of shader power, but at stock clocks it will have better memory bandwidth than the V2s' 8600M-GS, so it should perform noticeably better in games.

Interesting, So hypothetically and comparatively speaking if I were to compare the 8400 GS in the sony SZ to the 8600 "Neutered" GS in the ASUS V2s I'd "hypothetically" be making a comparison between a porche 2007' and a Honda Civic from 2005??

I'm confused, did I miss something?

The 8400M-GS in the Sony won't be quite as good as the neutered 8600M-GS in the V2s because it has less VRAM, but the cards should be pretty much equal in all other aspects.

Well, i just called Asus Germany and they told me that the 8600 GS is a 64 Bit version.
I'm pretty disappointed. I thought the V2S is my perfect notebook.
It is outrageous to ask for 1550€ for a crippeld 8600 GS.

has anyone got any concrete reply from Asus NA? with the wait taking so long (i preordered back in july lol), if the 8600 is so crippled on the v2s, i may as well move order to the F8 since i can't feel good about throwing down almost $1800 USD for something i won't be happy with.

    thnx

I don't know why I'm waiting either as I pre-ordered with Milestone when they first put up their site... I think mainly because I already paid in full around August 25th as well and find it too much trouble to refund ... but anyhow, Asus NA had said that they would be available around the 15th of September... but tomorrow's the 15th, and having called Milestone today, they are again projecting within two weeks... so really, I have no idea anymore when this thing will actually show up

If I could get a refund easily and have a T61 14" available right away... I probably would... but having waited so long already, I've already put myself in the situation to not walk away...

    S*&t,

I dunno now - I was pretty much decided to get V2s but if its not any better than A8J than whats the point of paying 500$ extra???

Do you know any good place to buy A8J with Go 7700? (Cuz if 8600GS is crap then I dont even want to think about 8400 at new A8J(SC) )

Pconline.com.cn did an review on an ATI HD2600 F8S. So we can be sure that it will atless have an hd2600. According to pconline.com.cn, there are 3 sellers selling it right now, but starting from $1899USD. Now don't take the chinese price seriously because they pay higher for laptop and computer parts despite they get almost everything else cheap.

Well, V2S is supposed to have better build.....Otherwise, you may want to consider "smaller" 15.4inch like MBP, Sony FZ or HP 8510P - they are not really different from F8S size-wise (F8S is huge for 14.1 laptop), and 8510P in particular seems to be very good deal.

i think sizewise the V2s is still smaller than the MBP but performance wise, the MBP will smoke the V2s

I think woodgypsy meant that the MBP was "smaller" compared to the F8s, which is kinda true. But yeah, for those wanting something like the M1330 or SZ6 but with a little more screen real estate, the V2s is still a good option.

Actually, I meant these laptops are smaller than average 15.4inch laptops. But yeah, I believe MBP is slightly smaller than F8S in term of both dimension and weight.

Most of sub 14.1 laptops (and well, F8S doesn't count as 14.1 laptop :p ) do have 8400GS or below, so in a sense V2S has about same performance with them. That being said, with their price and no real 8600GS, I am afraid V2S isn't very attractive option. Why not opt for much cheaper DV2500 or much smaller SZ6?

It looks as if the V2s-B1 is going to be available at the end of this month. Unless it's a typo, Monstronix.com will offer it for less than they're offering the A1.

    http://www.monstronix.com/v2sb1-p-408394.html

I didn't realize two months ago, when I pre-ordered the A1, that both models would end up hitting the market at basically the same time. If the B1 is truly the same price as the A1, and the B1 has a faster processor, why stick with the A1? Now I'm considering just waiting an extra week or two for the B1.

    Am I missing something here?

wow, still looks like theres still some strong support for this laptop. that's some good dedication guys. For me, I gave up waiting and went for the G1S. Awesome piece of machinery, only problem fingerprints are very easily seen. good luck to you guys
