I asked if they could check their battery wear levels but noone did reply yet.

My battery wear decreased to 1% now. And it is stable ;)

I plan to go for the modular battery, too. But it is still very expensive here, so I'm going to wait for more experiences.

I think that there is no general battery problem with the new Asus V1S but it seems that there is an increased amount of faulty batteries or notebooks.

This is the current answer to all the battery issue questions. I'm glad that mine has no problem at all.

3h 40min maximum. See my Review (Sig) for details. matt_h1 stated the same times in his rewiev here on notebookreview.com.

maati I could do a guesswork on what you have written. I wish your review would have been written in English. I would have enjoyed reading it.

As matt_h1 wrote one in English I decided not to translate it (would have been quite a lot of work).

But you can look at matt_h1's review, he got pretty much the same battery lifetime.

I also did a few more battery settings and tests, and did them with the standard battery, and the 6 cell battery.

I did order a B1 from ExcaliberPC, and it arrived yesterday. I had been on the preorder list for a B1 since the first batch of A1s sold out.

Unfortunately, after upgrading my hdd, restoring from the ASUS DVD does not work (see http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=167875).

So far so good -- I booted it up, poked around for ~20m, shut down, and installed a new HDD. Now I can't get Vista installed -- probably not the fault of the B1, though. As far as build quality et. al, I'm impressed -- I can't comment on much else, given the amount of time I've had it up and running :).

    @comand

Do you have any flex or noises when pressing the chassis?
Or are you able to bend the chassis when you take it at the corners?

Mine shows a considerable amount of flex and noises and I can't belive that I'm the only one who got this because all V1S must be same....

    Look at this:
    Video of V1S (chassis flex)

I can even produce right-clicks without touching the button...!

But this is really the only thing I have to crtizice on the V1S. I love all the rest of it!

Man, that chassis really does bend. I hope that this "feature" isn't in every european v1s. Either way I gonna have to go with the V1s. So the new 1-year extented warranty is only for NA customers, right? damn.

It's made from plastic (rather some plastic-magnesium alloy but not sure).

All the other V1S users are impressed by the build quality... But i can't belive that my V1S is the only one that has so much flex.

I am really happy with my V1S because it's simply the best notebook out there... but the case makes me feel afraid...

I didn't notice that much flex -- but I normally use a laptop support, so it's not sitting on the rubber feet, and is well supported in the area where you get the most flex in that video. I think the quality is relative -- I'm switching from a Dell 600m, which has *lots* of flex in all areas. However, even after 2+ years of heavy use, no damage to the notebook.

honguy, as far as the touchpad is concerned, I'm happy with it. It does take a little more to get a click out of either button than you might find on another laptop, but on a positive note, there is little chance of clicking on something accidentally :). I usually double-tap to click, if I'm using the touchpad -- I use an external mouse nearly 100% of the time, though.

As for the HDD upgrade saga -- it was totally stupid. During the recover procedure, a dialog pops up asking to "Reboot now/Reboot later", and I had chosen "Reboot now" both times. It turns out that 99% of the installation happens *after* you click "Reboot later". In my opinion, this is a *very* bad implementation of a restore procedure -- one that could fool a lot of users that have no instructions on how to respond to prompts during a restore. There should be *zero* prompts during a restore, or, if prompts are necessary (and they aren't), they should include a mention (or at least a supplemental) in the manual. Phew. </rant>

    Hi,

Does anybody know the price of one of these in Hong Kong - I was thinking of heading over to the Golden Computer Center to haggle when I'm there later this month.

    Asus V1S-A1 Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2.20GHz 15.4" Wide SXGA+ (1680x1050) 2GB DDR2, 160GB, Nvidia 8600GT 512MB

I'd also look at any model with 1900x1200 screens - I think the G2S is the only one though.... but I'm not sure about those flashy red side lights when in the office!

I'm curious - what exactly is the Anytime Upgrade disk for? Can it be used as a method to clean install the laptop (perhaps using the jelly-bean trick?)?

If it helps, a housemate got a F3 recently and it came with an Anytime Upgrade disk.

Maati: I just received my V1S-A1 today and I do notice a significant amount of flex. However, I don't think it makes me afraid, as it is only when large force is applied (such as all my strength on the palm rest). It seems to me that the worst flex is at the finger print scanner - the outside edges are quite sturdy

I saw your video, I would say mine is better than yours, but I still have a decent amount of flex.

EDIT: Matti, if I push very hard right under the print reader I can get my right click to go without hitting it.

Apparently, you need one of these disks to upgrade your pre-installed version of Vista to Home Premium (if you started out with Home Basic), or Ultimate (if you started out with anything else).

@Comand - Has it been confirmed if the GPU for the B1 has DDR2 or DDR3?? I'm new to these boards and it's been years since I really followed computers in general so I'm a bit rusty...

@Everyone else - Taking the same resolution, CPU, memory, HD, etc. how would the 8600GT 512MB DDR2 compare to the 8600GT 256MB DDR3 in terms of gaming? I'd be interested in playing Oblivion and possibly Age of Conan (not sure on the system requirements for AoC though).

Has there been any news or talk about any 512MB DDR3 cards being put into 15" notebooks? I plan to purchase a new notebook around the new year so still have a few months...

    Thanks in advance!

As far as the B1 goes it has DDR2 just like the A1 :(

The 8600Gt with DDR3 out preforms the DDR2 version quite significantly because of its higher clock speeds.

Currently the Asus G1S and the MacBook Pro are 15" systems with 8600M GT GDDR3 graphics chips.

The F3sa was scheduled to have an ATI 2600 with GDDR3, but Asus recently wiped the stats on that system:
    http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=26&l3=316&l4=0&model=1824&modelmenu=2

The Asus C90 has an MxM type II slot, so people are hoping a GDDR3 card will be available for it in the future.

I don't know about Age of Conan, but there are a number of posts on how the 8600 preforms in Oblivion for both the DDR2 and GDDR3 8600's.

the 512mb DDR2 can only just be overclocked to match the 256mb GDDR3 at stock and obviously if you were going to bother overclocking the V1s you probally would on the G1S to.

If your really into gaming and need something now then the G1S is for you, If you want a balance between good gaming, battery life, and not looking like your laptop fell out of a kinder surprise then the V1S is for you.

Considering how hot G1S GPUs seem to run, and there's reports of CPU getting too hot on G1S (G1S CPU and GPU share the same heatpipe, apparently), I don't think many would O/C G1S, nor they would get good overclock out of it. On the other hand, V1S doesn't seem to have these issues. Hmm....

You can hit 700mhz with DDR2? I thought DDR2 theorical limit was like 600?

I know the C90S is capped at 595.

No you cannot hit 700mhz, you can overclock the core to increase speed, By increasing both core and memory clocks you can match the performance of the GDDR3 (At least in synthetic benchmarks)

I have seen on this site the review of V1S and it has some thing like 3800 pts in 3DMark so it's the same like for G1S 3900 with XP and 163.44 drivers.

I think in video performance they are the same. MAybe V1S will perform better at high resolution because of it's 512 mo memory chip.

How about to try 3DMArk, FEAR performance test, HL² performance test in 1680 by 1050?

People who are interested in 512 mo of GDDR3, the only one which got it is the ASus VX1S ( judging by the Asus website )

You didn't look carefully enough. At the same settings that deliver 3800 for the G1S, the V1S only gets 3000.

I've been quite impressed with the gaming performance of my V1S-B1 so far... Fwiw, I get 122+ fps on the HL2 Lost Coast video stress test, and Bioshock is silky smooth using the default settings (high detail).

I did it myself -- newegg had a much better price than excaliberpc for the Hitachi HTS722020K9SA00 (7200RPM, 16MB Cache, NCQ). As far as battery life is concerned, I got a notebook because I prefer sitting on a couch to sitting at a desk (I do *that* all day long :)). I don't spend much (any) time disconnected from AC, so honestly, I have no idea what my battery life is like :).

Well, it's your own fault. You should have known that Acronis 9 cannot be installed on Vista (because it installs too deep into system resources, the same is for Nero 6 and some others).

What thinks about the V1S are garbage?

I used Acronis True Image 10, but I DID NOT install it into Vista. I just used the Acronis CD to boot the machine while connected to my wired network. I went through the steps and created the image on one of my networked drives. I've actually done it a couple of times, so far - once when the machine was brand new, and again once I had XP and Vista Ultimate installed with all the current (at that time) security updates.

I haven't tried to restore an image, yet, but it created the images just fine for me.

Hi guys, just wondering if I could get your opinion on your perceptions of the V1S versus the VX2S. Having looked at both laptop specs they seem almost identical but the build quality of a laptop is of utmost importance to me at this stage.

The reason is Asus are going to replace my R1f tablet after 5 months of a battle (5 months of ownership - falling apart literally from day 3). I have told them I will not accept another R1f so its between the V1S or offering to pay them extra for a VX2S (not sure how much I should offer). The overall packaging of the VX2S looks amazing but I got suckered by that buying the R1F and am very worried about getting another built-by-blind-guineapig laptop again.

Does anyone know if the VX2S is basically a glitzed-up V1S using the same chasis or are their more fundamental build differences. Any help would be incredibly appreciated after 5 months of laptop hell.
