Has anyone done a DVD rundown test on the V1S?

How easy is it to remove the stickers?

Check with the reseller first. I think a lot of resellers are listing 2Gb because that's the initial spec they got, but the final laptops actually shipped with 1Gb.

(P.S. If you do happen to find it somewhere where it's confirmed that it's 2Gb, please let me know :D. It would be very much appreciated!).

Laptops Direct sent me mine with 1GB. I called them up and pointed out the disparity, and they sent me another 1GB to fit myself.

By the way, getting the memory cover off - not fun!

    Hi everybody,

I'm wondering where you can buy an extra battery for modular bay ? I can't find informations about that.

If you can't, when will it be available ? Is it the same battery as for V1/VX2 (like this one) ?

    Thanks anyway.

Looks like I am having issues with my modular bay battery, now. At least I hope that's the only problem. I had both batteries in the laptop the other day, and suddenly the screen went dark, losing the backlighting. Then the laptop just shut itself off completely and would not start up again. I plugged into AC power, and it booted up again, but as soon as I removed the plug from the wall, it shut off completely again. I know the main battery had at least a 50% charge on it, so I was completely caught off guard.

After some freaking out, I tried removing the modular bay battery and installed the DVD drive to see if there was something with the modular bay connection. Was able to watch a DVD just fine, so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

Last night, I had ONLY the modular battery installed (removed the main battery), and had it plugged in to charge. It had a 7.8% charge according to RMClock. 5 hours later, it STILL only had a 7.8% charge, so something is up.

Has anyone else had any problems with the modular battery? Just one more issue, in addition to the intermittent Shut Down/Restart problem that others seem to be experiencing.

Interesting issue, lets try a few isolations to see what's going on.

    1) AC Plugged in, main battery in, optical drive in, how does the computer operate? Normal?

    2) AC plugged in, mainy battery in, multi-bay battery in, how does the computer operate? Shut down?

    3) Main battery in, opical drive in, run on battery, how does the computer operate? Normal?

    4) Main battery in, multi-bay battery in, run on batteries, how does the computer operate?

    5) It is ok to use RMClock but also use Windows Battery Miser for charge percentage. So use that to determine your charge, not RMClock. But if Windows and RMclock reports the same, then you know something is wrong.

    6) Try this solution, remove both batteries, let the computer run on AC, then place the main battery back in, and see what the charge % is. (hopefully 100%).

Then place the multi-bay battery and see what the charge is.

If that doesn't work, restart the notebook and try it again.

Let us know what happens, for these conditions, if nothing too positive, this may be an isolated issue where you may have to send your notebook in for service.

MilestonePC, I'll go through all of those scenarios and post the results. Just a note on a couple of them:

    1. With main battery and modular battery in, and NOT plugged in, the laptop will not start. Pressing the power button causes the power button and LED to light up for a split second, and then everything goes dark and nothing else happens.

    2. With ONLY modular battery in, and NOT plugged in, the laptop shows no signs of life at all. Pressing the power button doesn't do anything, even for a split second.

yup thats the same thing that happened to me, what i think happens, is that if you left the the ure notebook on just battery power with the modular and stock battery ure stock battery drains completly, and i mean completely to the point it shorts out and becomes usless and then it switches over to modular power...

my battery died that same exact way excaliber pc was nice enough to swap it out though so i didnt have to go through the manufacturer...

something must be messed up somewhere, befor the main battery drains it should switch over to the modular batter but it doesnt, it waits for it to completly die....so in the future until maybe a bios update, ull have to pull ure main battery so this doesnt happen...

just a guess though it may just be a bad batch of batteries...

I let the main battery charge for several hours last night, and when I checked it this morning, both RMClock and WBM said the battery was at 100% charge. I think I mis-understood some of the RMClock numbers before, expecting that a 100% charge would be at 75000, which is the designed max capacity. When I looked at it today, it was at 100% charge, and stood at 73185, which is the listed number for max charge.

I'm going to RMA the media bay battery to Excaliber, and see if a new battery will charge correctly. At this point, I don't know if the media bay battery EVER took a charge. It may have been dropping since the first use, and never charged back up at all (I didn't have any utilities installed initially that would have given me that information).

Does anyone know where I can get a V1S right now in Canada? Or are they all out and waiting for the next shipment. I checked with milestone, NCIX and Lucomputers and they all don't have it yet.

I bought my media bay battery from excaliberpc, I had one weird issue where all the battery reading utilities were reading both batteries with the same capacity (38000mAh), Taking out one battery and restarting fixed it though. I think Asus needs to do a bios update.

In regards to your battery not charging to the full 75000mAh it is quite easy to fix (Its not a real problem anyway, just a reading error) drain the battery to 0%, take it out, restart, when Vista loads put the battery back in, It should display 75000mAh, If not let it charge then it should display 75000mAh, When my battery is draining to 0% it usually fixes itself halfway, around 50-60% it starts reading the correct max capacity again.

Hey guys well I'm thinking about switching over to the V1S now because of the video card problems and massive delays of the V2S...I've read most, almost all of the thread but I kinda just want to make sure there is not a battery problem with the V1S. Also, is there anywhere I can buy from that has it in stock (I'm in the US)? Thanks a bunch guys, and hopefully I'll have a laptop soon!

What DVD player software does the V1S come with? Or anyone know what it's called in the Recovery disk?
I did the clean install and didn't re-install whatever it is.
I tried to play a DVD yesterday and it opened in windows media player and gave me an error about not being able to play it.

    Thanks~

i dont know what comes with it, but you can download the k-lite codec pack or even google vista codec pack, and that will play back dvds, in terms of reccomending a dvd software package you cant go wrong with cyberlink powerdvd...but thats just an opionion....

i wanna say our version of vista buisness comes with a wmp dvd package, least it says so on the bottom of the notebook

I personally use K-light audio package, I also installed Windows Media Player Classics that comes with it.

I also use VLC to play all my DVDs and high definition movies.

In my opinion those are the best programs to use.

hey guys, hopped the boat from the V2S and the G1S. Now coming on board for the V1S. I'm probably gonna get it as soon as milestone recieves it. For any US customers who don't mind waiting a couple weeks, Gentechpc (1toppc.com) looks like its giving a good deal for the V1S-B1 (2.4 CPU instead of 2.2). For the price of 1839 US with a free 160GB HDD. Compared to Excaliberpc which is 1899 for the V1S. If I have broken any rules by listing prices and companies, please remove my post, edit it or PM me and I will remove it right away. GO V1S!!!!

I too am looking to buy the v1s-b1. But as far as where to get it from (I am in the US)... Gentech and ExcaliberPC both have things I don't like. Specifically I want to get it with 1 slot of 2GB RAM, not 2 slots of 1GB. This reason being so that to upgrade later, I will only have to get 1 more slot of 2GB. Neither Gentech nor Excaliber allow this from what I see on their web sites. Gentech has the customizable RAM but I don't really understand why this (1 slot of 2GB) isn't an option. Btotech(Geared2play) offers this option but doesn't have the B1 listed on their site yet, so I am kind of waiting for that. If this is a bad idea and I shouldn't get 1 slot of 2GB and leave the other empty for now, someone please tell me :)

To my knowledge, having a 2GB RAM instead of two 1GB RAM is more expensive. Thus, that is why they don't list it in their options and is not offered for the same price.

quick question about the Battery wear?
Is the battery wear a problem because of the laptops utilization of the battery or is the battery defective itself? I just wanted to know, if you can get a third party battery replacement to solve the problem.
I'm still not sure whether or not to get a MBP or Asus V1S-B1...battery life and gaming performance and portability are important to me

So far from many users here, and especially maati who has helped with this research in testing the V1S for wear problem, stated that it does not suffer from the wear problem.

We can state the V1S doesn't suffer from the wear problem as we know of.

As for the battery problem, it has been stated by Caleb that the way to trigger the wear problem on batteries it to discharge past 40%.

Regardless, the V1S is supposedly clear of this problem so when considering the MBP vs V1S, it is more of a competition of style and form factor of the MBP versus the flexibility and ports of the V1S. Also Silver versus Black like colour.

Well it isnt 100% yet, There is definately some problem, Unless you think 13% wear in a day is normal. For some reason the battery needs to be calibrated far more often than I would consider normal to get it to read correctly.

Well, I personally would like to see other's with a V1S state their opinions on whether this wear problem exists with the V1S. I am not sure to consider 13% wear in 1 day to be abnormal or normal.

This battery wear problem is something that you look at over a period of time and monitor it.

There we no complaints with the V2Je regarding the battery, so it may be safe to assume the V2S doesn't suffer from this.

Sorry for the late reply, I didn't see this post.

With regards to both main battery and media bay battery.

Well the numbers you provide don't make sense technically.

The main battery has a designed capacity of 75000, whereas the multi-bay battery has a designed capacity much lower.

The difference in designed capacity from 73000 to 75000 is directly linked to normal wear % that you get when you receive the notebook. Sometimes your battery will have 5% wear in this first day, sometimes lower, it is just how batteries are.

If you are experiencing battery wear problems, like in the article that MysticGolem stated, then we will have to reconsider whether or not the V1S suffers from this problem. Right now, we only have 1 person stating that there is no wear problem. And another suggesting that there may be a wear problem. Right now it seems a little clouded.

As for the media bay, once again according to MysticGolem and his V1JP, muilti-bay battery doesn't suffer from this problem.

You do not need to send either of your batteries back, instead monitor it for irregular behaviour over a period of time. Regardless you have a 1 year warranty on the batteries.

maati please don’t get upset with V1S A1’s battery questions. You and matt h1 have always been helpful to everyone. Just like RSSMOTH even I am worried about the battery wear problem, In spite of reading all your and other peoples post regarding V1S A1, I think it’s too early to give it a judgment as to whether there is a battery problem or not, Because V1S A1 is fairly new and also not too many people have posted their opinion. On this forum we try to help each other and not cut each other so we would appreciate your advice.
    Thanks

If I had to say here and now, I would say there is not a battery wear problem, But I do think that the battery suffers from poor ACPI programming, I find short bursts on battery (~10%) tend to really stuff around with its capacity, It tends to charge to 97-99% and when the notebook restarts it shows the 99% capacity as being 100%, The more short drains you have the worse this gets. Its easily fixed by draining the battery, even during draining the battery fixes itself (at 100% it might show total capacity at 70000mAh, At 50% it might show it more correctly at 73000mAh and so on) The best way to fix it is to drain it completely to 0%, taking out the battery, and restarting, when Vista boots it will correctly show the capacity as 75000mAh. Its annoying but not really detrimental, It is yet to be seen if actual Wear is building up.

I would say that you should return the battery or the laptop itself.

I can drain and charge my battery just how much and often I want and the wear level is constant at 2%.

As no users here seem to be willing to post their battery wear levels and experiences, I will ask in a german forum where some users already have the V1S.

well fellas this is the 2nd time this has happened...

and im pissed because im on a business trip across the country and i only got 1.5 hours of use of my laptop on my 6 hour flight...

    problem...
the main battery has died yet again, it will not recognize wont charge even though it says so, the battery led starts to flash....this happens after the modular battery drains, for what ever reason, it shorts out my main batter, at first i thought it was a bad battery, but it obvisouly is something else...i am really pissed...

excaliberpc was kind enough to replace the 1st batter when it shorted out, but i doubt they will do it again you know? i am beyond aggrivated right now...

As you seem to be the only one having issues with the modular battery I'd recommend you exchange the notebook itself.
