Like Tim, I'll be reformatting the V1S (Once I get it) with Vista Ultimate. Anyone encounter any problems when reformatting the hardrive that comes with the notebook? And also, are all the required drivers on the discs?

You should be fine, Asus provides 2 discs, 1 for the Recovery (OS) and 1 for the drivers/utilities.
Here's what I suggest, once you get the notebook, don't format right away, play with it first, figure out what programs you like and don't like, mess around with with anyways, it doesn't matter if the OS gets messed up. Aslong as you learned what you want and what you don't want, write it down.
Then move onto the process of formatting and re-partitioning the hard drives if needed. The Vista disc in, let it install, then install the drivers and utilities you want from the disc provided by Asus and you should be set. Test everything after your done, make sure you installed everything to make your laptop perform at its best. Good Luck -
Thnx for the Tips

hehe thats what I did, Wish andrew would post my review, Ive already answered half the Questions here that are in that

I know, I saw it right after I posted that XD

Wow, the UK release of the V1S (full name: V1S-AK013E) has a 4200RPM 200Gb hard disk. ( http://www.zomp.net/shop/product_info.php?products_id=474362) What a disappointment!
Anyone know how the performance of a 200Gb 4200RPM compares with a 160Gb 5200RPM? -
I know, I posted that in a thread a while ago in response to someones signature. I know the 5400RPM drive is 44MB/s, and the 7200RPM drive is 59MB/s (The 200gb model is 69MB/s)
-
I'm wondering if the 200Gb 4200RPM has the same performance as the 160Gb 5200RPM, which is a possibility. If they have comparable performance then it's less of a problem (in fact, you'd be getting bigger capacity). -
Well I looked at the Seagate data sheets as my lappies HD is a seagate 5400.3, Seagate do not make a 4200rpm drive, And their Momentus range only goes to 160gb but the speed is the same for 40gb-160gb, Without knowing what the brand is in the Euro V1s I cannot give you an estimation and unfortunately most manufacturers do not give max internal data speeds like Seagate does.
-
Any comments on the case? Pix would be cool, or a link. How big is it, is it well built?
-
I think the 5400RPM is a happy medium if you want to keep heat levels low and battery life high while still maintaining your performance.
And matt_h1, how is the 200GB model faster than the 54/72?
FifthE1ement -
Yeah the laptop is very well built. I am actually going to have a review of my laptop coming up soon.
I am going to put my Asus V1s up for sale though. I don't have enough money for this laptop. I just had to pay $1,000 to get my cars brakes fixed and school books with tuition really hurt my wallet this summer. I was expecting to have more but all these added expenses hurt.
Tim -
I just checked out tomshardware's list of 2.5" HDD benchmarks. Here's a link to a comparison of the two hard disk drives on the list that most resemble the 5400 and 4200 being discussed:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/storage25.html?modelx=33&model1=602&model2=422&chart=144
From that, there seems to be quite a gap between the two.
It makes me angry to see that ASUS have chosen a 4200RPM drive for a top-of-the-line model. I'm astounted that there are any new laptops still being released with 4200rpm drives. Even worse, it seems like the UK is the only place getting ripped off like this . -
I played BioShock Demo on V1S last night, ran great at full resolution, and almost maxed settings.
I presume the actual game would run well all the way through, at least at mid settings?
Anyone play it yet, I'm thinking about getting it, no x-box 360 for me. -
I will probally get it in the next week, So glad to see an Australian game is doing so well.

Is anyone using the Fingerprint scanner utility? I tried it out, and it's not too bad, except that on my Vista login screen, I have three options showing:
1) One that says scan your fingerprint to login
2) One for the admin account I created
3) One for my personal/regular use account.
Anyone else have that extra option showing on the Vista screen (#1)? -
I used the fingerprint scanner, and I have 2 options at vista login.
Fingerprint or password.
I just scan my fingerprint at that point and it lets me in.
Not sure if that answered the question? -
This would probably be a good question to have a screen shot along with it, but I don't have my laptop with me here at the office.
Let's see if I can do a better job of explaining...on the Vista Welcome/Login screen, you usually have a picture and user name shown for each account setup on the PC. There are only 2 accounts setup (the Admin account I created and my own regular account), but I have 3 pictures, with the very first one just being a picture and saying to "scan fingerprint to login" below it.
It's really not a big deal, and just shows some of my being anal in keeping things as clean and as simple as possible, but it just seemed strange that it would show up like that.
I'll take a picture later this evening for further clarification. -
haha, K cause I still don't get it
-
guys what video drivers are you using? im using the 163.44 from laptopvideo2go.com but they are causing all kinds of stutter in graw2 and tigerwoods08...
-
Hmm those are the ones I'm using and haven't had any problems yet, of course haven't tested out to many games.
I heard a lot of good things about 158.36 though. -
OK, here is the screenshot of what I see when Vista loads up. Notice what is circled in red. All this says is "Swipe finger to log on" while the other 2 are actual user accounts that I created.
I am just curious as to whether anyone else that is using the fingerprint software also has a "user" show up like this. Just seems strange to me, that's all. I KNOW that I just have to swipe my finger. I don't need the reminder. -
yup I have it, pretty sure its supposed to be there.
-
-
Anyone had a problem with theirs refusing to power off on a shut down? Doesn't seem to be any pattern to it so far, and it sleeps/hibernates just fine - it just doesn't power off when shutdown is chosen.
I'm not too bothered as I invariably hibernate, but it's a niggle. -
When I turn it back on after doing a power-button off, it says 'Unexpected shutdown detected, initializing xx%'
Seems to be an Asus message, not a Vista one. -
Yup i had that happen a few times after i updated the video drivers.
-
I haven't applied any driver updates since getting it out of the box!
Ok, just doing some testing:
1) Boot Vista, wait for disk activity to settle down, choose shutdown. It hangs.
2) Boot Vista, wait for disk activity to settle down, choose hibernate, it powers off. Power it back on, resume windows, wait for disk activity to settle down, choose shutdown, it powers off cleanly.
3) Boot Vista, wait for disk activity to settle down, choose sleep, it sleeps. Power it back on, resume windows, wait for disk activity to settle down, choose shutdown, it powers off cleanly.
Performing a restart exhibits the same behaviour, as in it fails unless I've done a hibernate/sleep.
Am rather reluctant to do a recovery as I've *just* finished getting it all set up, so will just live with it for the moment. -
You don't even have to click on it to swipe your finger, just swipe and BOOM you're in. Love it! -
My retailer finally has the V1S in stock. Let's just home they manage to send it today, so that I can pick it up on saturday.

ASUS V1S-B1 Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 (2.40GHz) is out for preorder at:
http://www.excaliberpc.com/ASUS_V1S-B1_Intel_Core_2_Duo_T7700/partinfo-id-581798.html -
yeah thats aggrivating, only 50 bucks more and 2 weeks later, i could have had the 2.4...damn you asus damn you
-
ASUS V1S-B1 Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 (2.40GHz) Will this run more hotter and keep the fan running more often.
-
They both have the same TDP and operate at the same voltage, They also both draw the same amount of power. Theoretically it should only run hotter when under heavy load if at all, I know I would have gotten the 7700 had it been available.
-
Figured fellow gamers out there would be interested in the following, now to check if this update has fixed my issues with the 163.44 drivers

Between Sony Vaio FZ190CTO and AUAUS V1S-B1 I was almost ready to preorder my ASUS V1S-B1 Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 (2.40GHz) but V1S battery Wear Problem stoped me from ordering it.
-
To anyone who's familiar with (or experienced) the V6 battery wear problem comment on whether they think the V1S's problem (as explained in this thread) is similar (or the same as) to the V6 problem?
Did the V6 problem end up to be a problem with the battery itself, or a BIOS/SMART Chip/Software problem?
(I've skimmed the V6 battery wear thread, but it's quite bulky so I'd really appreciate it if someone could answer these )
(Oops, I put this in the wrong thread. Please delete .) -
Is the G1S going to get the T77000 as well?

A few new Intel mobile processors will also be announced:
Core 2 Extreme X7900
Core 2 Extreme X7800 ( now available on Asus G2S-Extreme)
Core 2 Duo T7800
Core 2 Duo T7250
Core 2 Duo L7700 -
There's alway something new and better coming out.
So impossible to keep up~ -
Eh...I don't think you would really notice the .2GHz increases speed much anyways.
Tim -
Hey!
Do you happen to know whether the CPU upgrade will take place in Germany also? The current model has a T7300, so perhaps the new would have a T7500 (or maybe even T7700?) I would assume this to happen if the intel price-cuts take place worldwide. -
has anyone had any success with the webcam? ive tried trillian, aim, and yahoo, but still no luck...
another problem that happens ocasionally is that when i launch the life frame software in vista, it will ocasionally give me a BSOD usually only when i have trillian pro open and running... -
whens the 2.4ghz V1S coming out in UK? Will it be around the £1300 mark too? or more?
-
Same price.
-
Thanks for the response maati - do you know roughly how long it will take to start being sold in UK though?
This is DEFF the laptop for my university! -
I do have some info, though. When I saw that the UK V1Ses actually come with 1Gb RAM instead of the expected 2Gb (jeez, how hard is it to put an extra stick of RAM in there?!) I e-mailed a reseller to find out what was going on.
He told me that the initial shipment of V1Ses only had 1Gb RAM, but later shipments will have 2Gb. He also said that this shipment is expected to arrive "mid-end September", and there will be a price increase, and that the rest of specs will be the same. So the prospects of getting an upgrade seem slim.
At this point, I'm really not happy with the way ASUS are treating UK customers: they haven't expressed any intention of releasing the V2S here (whereas resellers in the US and other countries have been informed about it, and they've even started shipping in Germany!); they could only manage to give us 1Gb of RAM in the V1S; it's doubtful we'll get a V1S processer update; and the HDD we get is just 4200RPM!
I really really like ASUS, but they're starting to test my resolve now... -
Hm. This sounds bad.
It could still take a long time for the V1S-B1 (the new one) to arrive in the UK.
4200rpm and 1GB ram? Are they living in Stone-age?
