i think he means its really quiet i dont hear a damn thing, i can barely hear the hard drive spin but thats only when i have the notebook upside down and directly on my ear....heh im telling you this thing is a beast...and yes the rom drive does get noisy but thats normal for a laptop drive...it isnt unbarable at all, it goes away once it spins up...

the heat is all vented through the right side, so as long as you have proper ventilation on ure lap or table, and ure hand isnt directly to the right of the vent u cant even tell its hot....the right palmrest gets a little warm, but only a little more then your hand from sitting there for a while....

Seems not too different from the V1Jp that I have here.

BTW, it DOES get a bit louder when the CPU temperature goes beyond a certain point (depends on which profile you're using, I've seen it step up the CPU fan at 60C in some cases and 80C for others).

Quick Question, If I was to want to upgrade my RAM to 4gb, do I only need 1 x 2gb stick, or 2x 2gb sticks (to replace whatever may be in there)

DeadEye, I believe that it comes with 1 x 2gb stick, leaving the other slot open. I don't have mine in my hands, yet (should on Friday), but I'm pretty sure that one more 2gb stick would give you your 4gb.

Edit: Comes with 2 x 1 Gb sticks. Thanks for setting me straight, matt_h1.

Of course, unless you are running a 64-bit OS (Vista or XP), you won't see the full amount of memory, topping out at around 3 gb.

It comes with 2 1gb sticks, I dont think any manufacturer sells 1x2gb stick as standard, You will need to buy 2x2gb and sell your other two. And as pointed out you will not see all 4gb unless you are running a 64bit OS (Vista, XP, Linux).

I used Google Translation to try to have an idea of the german review that Maati wrote.

I saw the following sentence in the translated web page: "The matte WSXGA+ display..."

Does the V1S really comes with a matte screen, or is it a translation glitch?

    Hi everybody,

Reading the maati's review, something didn't appear clear for me : is the V1S' 8600gt a MXM card or not ?

    Thanks,

I could remember wrong but I think that it wasnt a direct copy of a mxm slot rather something very similiar. Asus used the same slot thingy with some other notebook so it might be compatible with some later cards(if they come to use the same slots in new laps). I think I read that somewhere :D (or then I'm just 2 sleepy)

For my Vista experience score, my desktop graphics index is only like a 4.6, but my 3-d gaming score is like 5.1. Is the Vista desktop more demanding than a game?

Has anyone installed outlook 2003 under vista sucessfully on their v1s?

I have tried several times and keep getting an error saying I do not have sufficient permissions to access or read mapisvc.inf

I have tried to change the permissions of mapisvc.inf but am denied.

I only have 1 account set up under vista and it is set as an administrator.

I have googled but to no avail.

Somebody please help, I really need to get this running.

    Thanks

I'll be ordering my V1S very soon (probably beggining of next week) and want to replace the 200GB 4200 rpm HD (UK model) for a 200GB 7200 rpm drive - the retailer can install this for me.

To V1S owners out there, do you think this will have much of an effect on heat or battery life?

Mine should be delivered tomorrow, too. I ordered mine last Friday (wish I would have done express delivery like jourabchid did). Can't wait. Just have to figure out what the first steps are going to be once I get it in my hands.

Thinking about making a complete hard drive image, then wiping the whole thing clean and reloading Vista from scratch, along with XP in a dual-boot configuration.

If anything goes wrong, I can always just restore the whole hard drive to factory specs and start over. At least that is the plan.. :D

let me know how xp is once u get it on there, driver and asus app wise, im not sure if the many of the files on asus's site are backwards compatible so ive been kinda holdn off...instead of being a guinnypig...

if u do decide to dual boot install xp first...it will be much easier then having to worry about editing the boot loader when vice versa...

DTrump, what program are you gonna use to image the drive? Thats a great idea btw, I wanna do the same thing and I cant stand the thought of watching the Asus recovery CD work for hours on end if I decide I want to start from scratch again.

According to Iced-Tea (MXM-Upgrade) it Looks like another "flipped" MXM card, like with the A8 series. based on the picture of it from the German (matti's??) review.

Not sure what exactly a flipped MXM card is, but it would seem if you wanted to replace it (and it were possible) you'd need another flipped MXM card to replace it with.

I'm guessing it will make it hotter and lessen the battery life :D

I just ordered too! Also upgraded to the Hitachi 200GB 7200 rpm drive. Ordered from Gentech. I waited all summer, held off on Lenovo T61P and Compal IFL90. If the HP 8510p had the 2600 XT, I'd have taken that over this one. Can't wait any more months!

I requested they not enable Turbo, based on earlier reports of decreased performance.

I've got an older copy of Ghost (version 6, maybe  ), but I'm pretty sure that won't work with the newer SATA drives with Vista on them. I also have a copy of Acronis True Image Home 10 that, while there appear to be some issues, people have had some success with when making full drive images. I just have to test it out to see how it works.

Going to be an interesting weekend, and it's going to take a good deal of restraint on my part to not just rip the thing open and start playing with it before I even get to make the backups. :D I still need to create the slipstreamed XP install, also. The wife is not gonna be happy when I'm not paying attention to her all weekend!

I'm going to use a copy of Vista Ultimate I have for a fresh insta

Anyone know if that will turn off turbo memory unless I decide to re-acitvate it?

I think you will need to go into the device manager (not sure if it is the same name in Vista) and disable Turbo memory. I think I am going to try Turbo memory for a while and then disable it and see if there is a difference.

I am also thinking about dual booting with XP...just need to figure out the drivers. Maybe we should make a thread for XP drivers that work on the V1s.

All right, so at least the 8600gt seems to be removable, in a "ASUS special" MXM format ? If maati or an other V1S' owner could confirm that (open your notebook :p ) , it would be great :)

    Thanks,

more powerful processor? that's pretty expensive to go to the 2.4 GHz. I might be wrong but that processor is about a couple hundred more than the 2.2GHZ.

I was on the preorder list for a V1S this week, but missed out because the ringer on my cell was broken when excaliber called :(. Now I'm on the preorder list for the new model, which has a T7700. Hopefully it's two weeks or less until they have stock!

Tim Just so you know, There are actually three partitions on the drive, One is the invisible boot sector and it takes up 8GB.

Then there is VistaOS and Data, If you plan on installing XP keep the Data partition and just Rename it XPOS or something. Other than that there are lots of utilities to merge partitions without wiping them and you keep all data intact, The best one I have found is Acronis Disk Director Suite.

So the 7.81gb volume before my vistaOS volume is the boot sector? Whoops. I tried formatting that to use it. Did I completely screw something up? Right now it's unallocated. My computer seems fine though.

The easiest way would be to use a live CD. If you don't know what that is, hit up the Linux forum to for more information. Thats how I always get my drives arranged, through a Linux Live CD.

it was exactly 8000MB. I am not 100% sure because I havent tried it yet but I think that was the Instant on Media player thing, Where you dont have to boot into Windows to play Videos and views pictures. Im not sure if the V1S does that but its a fairly standard feature these days.
