well my notebook is in Aus, I have spoken to NBR and will be submitting a review when I get it, but with customs I probally wont have it for another week.
-
-
lucky you ordered from the US, i went to my local asus guy and he rang asus directly for me and they said not for another 2 weeks. he mentioned that, that means about 1-8 weeks in asus language.
-
i received my v1s today from excaliber ordered yesterday, i must say the notebook is top notch, docking station is great, just waiting on my modular battery and ill be all set...
it will take some getting used to the resolution ime used to 1440 on my dell 24inch....but it is lookin good...
took about 30 minutes for install and set up to complete, a couple issues here and there, and im still in proccess of uninstalling all of asus's bloat....but other than that all is well...
if anyone has any questions ill do what i can to answer them...
---
so far my ownly gripe with the v1s, is the left mouse click button on the touch pad, its pretty bad, maybe i have a bad one or maybe its due to design but sometimes its like you have to press it just right in order for it to work...and depending where you press it, it may or may not have that click feel....at least we can double tap the touchpad for left clicking.....im hoping with some use it will get better, or ill just become used to it.... -
is it available in the US and Canada now?
-
yes___________
-
Saw one in person today, looks great like the previous V1j though it could be just that display model, the bottom left area was a bit 'loose' and had flex. Might want to check if its a problem or just the one on the display model. Everything else is fine, the screen doesn't seem grainy from what I've noticed.
-
Don't think its available in Canada atm . Called a bunch of retailers (pcvillage, canada computers, milestonepc) and all of them don't have it in stock.
-
other issues besides the left mouse button feeling odd....
uninstalling asus bloatware is a pain...
i uninstalled asus notebook monitor, because the icon kept showing in the system tray until i hovered over it it would disappear...after uninstall it still shows up and then disappears after hovering....
also ive been having to manuall turn the machine off after shut down...the system will go black but both power lights will continue to be lite, and yes it is not in sleep mode...sleep mode the light fades in and out....after i click shutdown it just hangs until i hold the power button to force power off... - UPDATE: just fixed the turn off issue by installing 163.16 vista drivers
then at each boot it says that it didnt shut down properly....
its kind of aggrivating...
im debating on just doing a complete clean install with a non OEM version of vista....
maybe even xp if i can figure out what drivers i need...
if you guys could offer me any insight it would be much appreciated -
I just orderd my V1S-A1 from excaliberpc.com, it'll ship on Monday and be here by Thursday, I'm excited!
I'm kinda disappointed I didn't get a 7200 rpm hard drive, but I guess I can do that later~
Holla! -
Well I finally ordered my V1s today through EXcaliberPC (if only I didn't go on vacation on Wednesday ). It said they have five models in stock. I hope mine is one of them. lol
Tim -
the v1s just took too long for me, im posting this from my brand new MBP, its nice.

Hello, guys! Im trying to choose between V1s and V2s. And the last question for me is: wich card is faster 8600gt 512 ddr3(or is it gddr3? I do not distinguish them, sorry ) or 8600gs 256 ddr2? take into account that the screens are different.
TIA -
the v1s has 512mb gddr2
the v2s has 256mb gddr3
in any case, the 8600gt will outperform the 8600gs.
while the gs can be overclocked to match the synthetic benchmarks of the 8600gt gddr2 at stock, that's about as far as it goes and does not explain real life performance. -
Thanks, so V1s is beyond comparison
-
Well if you compare to the V2S then yes, however the new G- series will outperform the V1S concerning the graphics card. But we dont want that one now do we. Oo
-
Just imagine "Asus V1s/V2s with 8600gt gddr3" - thats my dream
But still i cant deside... V1s or a litle bit smaller nice "black inside" V2s..
Whether I shall feel a difference between 8600gt gddr2 512 and 8600gs gddr3 256???? I mean real life performanse. Say, whether I can play Oblivion/NFS carboon/fear on V2s on acceptable and comfortable settings, without bugs?? -
As for G1S.. Its a little bit ugly, IMHO.. All that green lamps.. Thats not for me..
-
Think you could get good playability with those settings on either.. Dunno about Oblivion though
-
In Australia the V2s comes with 8600GT w 256mb, no word if its ddr2 or gddr3

Anyone knows if it's possible / easy to install XP on this ?
Where could one find all the drivers ? -
-
N.Mat It comes in two configurations, One with the GS one with the GT
http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=V2S-4S031G
Thats the GT model, Check any of the horde of links and you will see. -
OMG, must import it!
-
XD lol. Its pretty pricey, So strange that Asus releases weird stuff in Aus that they dont in America/Asia/Europe IE 9 cell batteries and odd configurations (V1s with Ultimate Vista, V2s with GT)
-
has anyone had any issues getting their webcam to work with trillian or aim?
i cant for the life of me -

I thought that it seemed as if Asus made an error with the listing of the product. Yes, many resellers list the V2S as coming with the 8600GT, but they also list it as being the exact same weight AND size as the V1S (.
DIMENSION & WEIGHT: 363 x 263 x 22-35.7mm/2.7 KG WTIH 8 CELL BATTERY
Not to mention that it also states it comes with an 8 cell, not a 6 or 9 cell.
It just seems too good to be true, and with an error in the listing like that I'd say it's more likely that it was an error on the part of the video card, not dimensions/weight.
Edit: I really hope I'm wrong. If I am I would buy one (I'm in Sydney!) -
V2S with 8600gt, even if its gddr2 (most likely it is gddr2) is cool Anyway information from official Asus website is more reliable..
Can you advise some foolproof on-line store in Australia, which can offer international shipping? -
Did anyone actually buy a V1S from BTOtech (Eddie)? Are their specs reliable? What about the service? Does the HDMI connection support HDCP? Is it only line-out or two-way? BTOtech offers a choice of 2.5" HDD's, I want a 200GB 7k200, which one is best wrt. performance and noise: Hitachi, Seagate or Fujistsu? Does anyone run the V1S with Ultimate 64? What is your experience?
-
-
No one bought from eddie as he got his shipment cancelled for selling his V1s for to little.
-
HDCP means high bandwith digital content protection and should be part of a proper HDMI connection. If not I get a blanc screen when connecting to my Pioneer screen.
-
p.s. sorry for my english -
Found a XP drivar pack for G1S. I guess those drivers should work for V1S to, right?
http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20070629030121296&board_id=3&model=G1S&page=1&SLanguage=en-us
My XP installation CD is slipstreamed with SP2, does this mean that it contains working SATA drivers or do I have to do another slipstream edition of my XP installation CD? -
Well, I'm still waiting for my V1S...should come soon.
however, I bought a Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160GB for $123.94 at Dell.com. The best deal i could find.

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=341-4638
It came with a piece of plastic screwed to it for its insertion in the dell latitude...it should be easy to get rid off. -
-
I can't wait. I got a call today to say my V1S has been dispatched and i should get it tomorrow.
-
did anyone else order it from excaliberpc? any idea on when they will be in stock?
-
I ordered from excaliberpc.com, mine shipped out yesterday before they went out of stock.
I thought I remeber seing on the website that eta for a new shipment was 3-4 days. -
I ordered mine from Excaliber on Friday, and it shipped out that afternoon. Coming across the country, and it should be here by Friday according to FedEx's tracking website.
-
yeah thats why i said screw it and paid the overnight fee, since i wasnt charged sales tax, i figured whats anothe 100 bucks...
my modular battery was delayed and im playing tag with the fedEx guy, im gonna have to drive up the road i think to pick it up form the hub...
im lovn it, having a hard time putting the v1s down... -
any thoughts on the build quality? i've heard the ASUS V-series doesn't even come close to the business models of Dell or HP (which I very much don't want to believe)
-
i cant speak for dell or HP business models, but the build is definatly way above the consumer ones...
everything about it seems pretty durable, my only gripe as previous stated is with the left button on the touch pad...its a little off, it could also just be my build...but ive gotten used to it, besides i usually just double tap the pad anyway...
i had it in my garage yesterday while working on a car, had the manual and a forum pulled up, it sat there on the workbench and battled the grease on myhands...cleaned it up last night looks like new...
on a nother note...i wanted to know what the recovery cd was about...you must have the utilities cd as well dont loose that....but it took nearly an hour and half 2 hours to completely install everything...i thought it could have run much smoother....
i am still waiting for some xp drivers cause i dont know how much vista i can take...little things are irritating me, long scans at boot, and the taskbar not remember settings...i like it double heighth.... -
What about the Heat and noise level. Also looking at the picture it seams like the DVD drive is on the left side of the laptop is that odd.

What about the Heat and noise level?
-
Some one who translated Matti's ( the guy from Germany) said that it has a lot of noise and also that the DVD drive had some humming noise.
-
It never gets really quiet but it never gets loud also. The DVD drive sometimes makes a very loud humming noise, this is due to the modular bay.
The notebook stays very cool. -
Maati first thanks for your quick reply.
So is the humming of the drive just specific to your V1 of is it going to be with all of them. Also when you say "It never gets really quiet" is that the fan noise or what?
