    Yes, V1s has ddr2, while g1s has gddr3. The same situation with VX2S - DDR2, 3dmark06 2996

In the hands on review linked earlier I see the vid card removed, so would that reason that this could be replaced by a 8700m GT with ddr3 down the road? If its a type 3 card slot, then maybe even 8800?

Sw00p, where did you order your V1S from?... The V1S meets all my desired specifications except for the fact that the US Version seems to have the glossy screen, it would be great to be able to get a matte screen...

Sw00p, is it possible that after using the battery several times (to a very low state) you chould check the wear level of the battery? I am curious to see if the V1s has been fixed for this issue.

maati, those temperatures... are they the values when the notebook is high performancing or when it is idle? (i assume high performancing because 40,5° is much i think...)

Pretty high load, about 15 Minutes of 3DMarking at high performance settings. It could get even hotter after some hours of gaming, though.

Your Sony is fine because you are talking about the internal temperatures.
What we were talking about are the surface temperatures.

    indeed.

could you give the temperature-value from the HDD when you do random tasks (like browsing, looking at pictures, checking mail..., so not heavy tasks like gaming)? check it via HD Tune...

    thx.

    GPU: Maximum 85°, Idle 62°

Don't know the CPU temp for now.

EDIT: Maximum CPU Temp is 70°

Hey, that's not a bad peak temperature at all. It will be a welcome change from my Inspiron 1100. I've had that thing shut off from excessive heat before when using it on my bed. I went into the BIOS to see what the shutoff temp was, and saw that it was 105C! Ridiculous.

Eh, 105 C is ridiculous. Not sure if you'd ever want to get a laptop that hot, haha. That doesn't seem very healthy...

The more I read about it, the more I get excited. I hope the group buy for the V1s goes through.

I read in the reviews posted that the build is good...but would you say its considerably less well built than the MBP, HP and lenovo business notebooks? You stated you were able to produce ripples when you pressed on the back...was that with relatively little torque? Only reason I ask is because I am picky when it comes to built. Lastly, is it finally confirmed that the v1s is GDDR2? From looking at the windows experience it seems so.

lenovo business notebooks are known to be the industry standard to compare to. i don't know how the V1s compares to it...but i'm betting pretty damn well.

So battery life on the V1S doesn't seem too great...only 2 hours of DVD watching? It makes that modular bay battery seem almost necessary.

Ironically, you can't actually watch a DVD if you using the modular bay for a battery :p

Haha, I didn't even think of that. Yeah I guess you're generally screwed if you want to watch a full movie on this thing.

However, with the 8-cell and 6-cell batteries combined you should probably easily get over 5 hours of use if you turn the brightness down.

Well according to maati the temps seem to be the same as my V1JP.

As for battery life. My V1JP with XP Pro gets, 3 hours of battery life from the main battery, WIFI On, Screen at 2/16 and doing light tasks like browsing and typing documents. Clock speed is set to 55% (1.2Ghz). Average consumption rate is 25watts per hour.

As for the modular bay battery, 1 hour and 40 mins, same settings above. And the consumption rate was 25 watts per hour as well.

I just recently got a new battery for my V1JP, and I was hoping to get 4 hours and 30 minutes of battery life, but nope, it doesn't work, the most I can get is 4 hours on the dot. The consumption rate goes up to 30 watts doing the same tests as before.

I will be reformatting my laptop within this week or next week, and hopefully I will be able to achieve 4 hours and 30 mins as I expected it to be.

Sorry to burst your bubble but 5 hours of battery life is basically impossible unless the V1S has a nice new BIOS and ACPI with even more efficient cooling. (unlikely) In order to get 5 hours of battery life u needa use it in a refrigerator...no joke.

I took my laptop outside in the winter, my temps dropped and my consumption rate went down to 22 watts per hour, and I was amazed, and my battery life went up another 15-20 minutes. Man it was cold outside!

However, this doesn't make it a bad laptop, and as for the lid...well sure it flexes, and yes you can see ripples with little pressure, however I have used my notebook for 8 months now and I take it to school everyday in my backpack. No problems, my bag has fallen over several times and i'm not afraid, also because my bag is nicely padded too.

I must say, I really love the screen and keyboard...those would have to be my two favourite things about this laptop. Also if you want you can read my review in the sig. It should resemble what the V1S would have to offer plus more ports and performance with SR and the 8600GT. (man I wanted Nvidia over ATI)

I also can't wait till the V1S arrives, i'm definitely have a look at it. :D

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

I'm still considering either getting a g1s, v1s or combo of cheapy laptop plus upgrading my old desktop. Functionwise the g1s has pretty much everything I want but I'm just not sure about how it looks to actually go through with the purchase. The v1s on the other hand is almost as good though with a less questionable appearence.

Anyways I was wondering has anyone else benchmarked the v1s? The euro version of the v1s and the compel if90/saeger 2090 specs seem pretty much the same though the one set of benchmarks posted so far seem quite low compared to the set posted in the compel/saeger review. Not that these canned benchmarks mean much but considering the similarity in hardware the difference seems rather large.

I guess you could burn the DVD to image on a different PC, transfer it to the laptop and use daemon tools to mount it as a virtual drive...

I cancelled my order with ExcaliberPC.
Anybody know a good Asus retailer in Montreal Quebec, where I could just walk in and buy a V1S? I am going there in two weeks, and I might buy one there if the price is alright.
Otherwise I will purchase one from an Australian seller after I come back.

    Hello

I just bought the V1S and i have realized that I need to setup a dualboot with XP in order to run workrelated programs. There are no XP drivers at ASUS support page, can I find drivers elsewhere?

The most important driver is SATA driver so I can install XP. Can I use a XP driver from another ASUS notebook?

I found this page explaining how to setup dualboot:

    http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/about88231.html

It would be great if I could get some help to identify correct XP drivers, I'll guess that maybe more people are interested in running a dual boot on this great machine.

    Greetings

I will make a guide with links to the necessary drivers when I receive my machine, If I get really bored I might even make a package you can use, or create a slipstream package.

That would be great, Matt. I am planning on seeing what kind of performance I get from running XP within Virtual PC first (probably not very good :( ), and if that isn't an option, I'll look at going to a dual-boot with XP.

Wouldn't most of the drivers for the V1s be the same as those for the G1s? Seems like the components are pretty much identical, with the exception of the video card having different memory configurations. I almost bought the G1s, so I had already downloaded the XP driver package someone else had created for it. If not, it would at least be a good place to start.

    That would be great Matt_h1!

I'll guess the installation with a slipstreamed XP CD would make things much more simple since you need the SATA drivers before installation starts.

    Dammit dammit dammit too...
It does not sound very good...and the sad part is that btotech got into trouble not for a lot. Apparently Gentech is doing just fine by selling it for just 60$ more...And for another 10$ more you have a free ext HDD with milestonepc...

btotech did not tell/have a lot of information on what is going to happend next...what to do dammit!

I mentioned this as well, All Asus resellers were told to go no lower that $1805.

I can understand why, It stops some resellers from undercutting everyone else and making Asus Notebooks appear cheap. Though it really isnt fair to punish eddies customers for that, Im glad I went with excaliberpc, My notebook is already in Aus which is pretty amazing.

Its one thing to make a link to a driver pack, I dont think Microsoft or NBR would be to happy if I posted a link to a hacked copy of XP, Even if I dont provide a keygen with it. Can anyone clarrify this? I dont mind doing it, I have 112kB/s upload, But only if its legal, Otherwise ill just make a pack that you can slipstream yourself with your own disc.

just the pack that we could slipstream, i think the majority of us know about slipstreaming, even those who dont can give it a quick google and learn pretty easily to do it themselves....

    ------

my v1s will be here shortly, i am about to leave work early just to sign for it...is that bad? heh, it would save me a trip to fedex hub....

Yes, I just needed some help to find the correct drivers so a driver pack should be great. I can slipstream my own XP CD if needed.
