I believe it's about 5.9lbs. with the 8-cell standard battery and DVD drive.

Does anyone know when the V2S will be available in the US?
-
-
How is it that Media frost has it ahead of the rest of the world? All the Aussie Retailers are stating 15 days.
-
On Wednesday there were many retailers who had the notebook in stock. I don't know why Jabberwhocky knew I ordered at Mediafrost. I just choose Mediafrost because I had only good experience with his customer service, because he visits a forum, that I like to visit to, he usually has very good prices and seems to have a good connection to asus (for what I can tell from his posts in the forum).
-
Seriously....Why is there no group buy for the V1s yet there is one for the V2s?
-
also...more people expressed interest in the V2s compared to the V1s, making the V2s a possible candidate for a group buy. -
u think the V1S would be released before Aug 20 in US
-
should be...projected release is around August 11th or 15th I believe. Factor a week to ship, so MPC's August 23rd estimate is pretty accurate.
-
Luckily we have bad weather, so you should have a lot of time testing the V1S during the weekend, if you get it by then. Congrats to your buy. -
In a german notebookforum the first have received their V1S. I´ll keep you updated on the first impressions until SwOOp posts his own. Keep in mind that the german version has a T7300 2.0 Ghz CPU, the rest should be the same as in other countries.
-
Excellent...thanks jabber. I am really interested in how this thing is build and how it performs.
-
what do you guys think?
i need to order a laptop by the 1st week of september, its a toss up between teh f3sv and the v1s depending on availabilty...
you think i should wait for the v1s? or screw it and get the f3sv-a1/b1...
since no one really knows when the v1s will be available stateside...i just cant decide if i should wait or not... -
anyone in Europe been able to get their hands on it yet? I'm extremely interested in the battery life since that will be the deciding factor for me. I've been talking to some Canadian retailers and they say it will come in about a week or two.
-
I would think a person could go to newegg.com and look at reviews of the Asus V1JP features that aren't changing to get an idea of how they will perform (battery life, HDD tray, etc.)
-
-
Don't know if you speak german but i'm writing a very detailed one tonight

i am stuck on which laptop to buy so a review of the v1s would be awesome in english

http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=23&l3=523&l4=21&model=1780&modelmenu=2
Here are the stats for the G1s:
http://usa.asus.com/products_compare_show.aspx?array_model=1674&l1=5
The V1s:
a swivel web camera
512MB 8600M GT (rumored to be DD3 - but we'll see)
finger print reader
free carrying case (not a backpack)
5.9 lbs
The G1s:
256MB 8600M GT DDR3
free backpack and free mouse
6.8 lbs
Most of the other parts seem to be the same/similar options.
Prices appear similar on both systems. -
@for the rest: until now there has only been chatter about good built quality, nice anti-glare display, good viewing angle but no real hard facts.
As i am new to the forum just a question on the side. I understand the rep rating but what are the green squares for? -
Here some Specs i found on German Websites:

Ohh, the poster says pictures and benchmarks coming soon too .

Thank you maati and Jabberwocky.
look forward to see the benchmark results ^^ -
Thanks jabberwocky,
Nice first impressions review! Still nothing about GDDR3, MXM and other questions with unknown answers.
However, the high core clock values reported above by kabua may show that it is DDR2. Right? -
just thought i would post a english translation

All that VRAM thing is so so confusing!
Well, reading this old post about the inspirion 1520 and few other things, I came to the conclusion that:
-First, DDR2 is more cost effective than GDDR3. This is why this is found in mid range notebook. Should we expect GDDR3 taking into account the cost of the V1S?
-The memory clock of GDDR3 should be 700 (2 x 700 = 1400 Mhz effective ). DDR2 being clocked at 400 (800 Mhz effective).
- Rivatuner is not the right tool to assess the specs of notebook cards (prefer the use of ATitool or nTune by nVidia.
-This downclocking of DDR2 compared to GDDR3 a bad impact on the memory bandwith of the card and thus on the display, especially on big screen like the V1S has one. For memo, mem bandwith = memory clock x number of chanel x the bus width in bytes.
DDR2 400 x 2 x 16 = 12.8GB/s
GDDR3 700 x 2 x 16 = 22.4GB/s --> almost twice as much!
-There is some european V1S with GDDR3. The question is to know if the US version with 512MB is GDDR3 or the cheap DDR2.
I'm just discovering theses issues. Correct me if I'm wrong somewhere since there is so much bullcrap out there about it! -
Jabberwocky said: ↑The standard for the 8600GT DDR3 should be core 475 / mem 700, so the core seems to be oc either ways.
A couple of days ago i emailed a retailer who advertised the V1S with DDR3. He mailed back that his technical description was correct and he could offer the V1S with DDR3.
The english translation reads funny when know the german original.Click to expand...
G1S 513/702(1404 effective) - 8600 GT GDDR3
F3Sv 540/400(800 effective) - 8600 GS DDR2
So, I'd say based on these figures V1S has DDR2 - and for such a big screen that's not too good -
Perhaps this translation is better.
Thanks goes to Maati
Test Asus V1S notebook

Scope of supply
By the accessories Asus has not saved really{certainly}, not only with the hardware, also perfection is aimed here: A high grade working{having an effect} pocket{bag}, a decent travel mouse, a display cloth, DVDs with Nero 7.5 OEM, to drivers and Recovery software, a printed manual, a modem cable as well as a page Video/Cinch-adaptor cable and Klettkabelbinder prove together an entire whole package.
Cabinet
Nobly - in envious looks{glances} it will not lack absolutely. The cabinet exists{consists} of a mixture of anthracite tones and black tones which gleam in the light, silver bars and dark aluminium bars round{round off} the design.
However, here the first shadow pages also show themselves: The Verwindungssteifheit of the cabinet something leaves much to be desired, with the pressure on the Handballenauflage or raising the notebook on a page is to be calculated on some Knarzgeräuschen. The cabinet can be pushed with some effort easily, one presses{pushes} under the right Touchpadtaste even{still} a click can be generated{produced}.
However, also of positive there is to report: Thus the used materials{evidence} seem throughout very high-quality, the gleaming effect points in a kind of plastic magnesium-group material, the display lid is stable enough and streaks hardly originate in the display with the pressure on the lid.
The display hinges hold the display firmly{hard} enough in position and permit an opening of the display to more than 180 ° out. Specific feature{Peculiarity}: The display owns no lock mechanism and can be simply opened in the camera frame a little bit surviving on top.
An other{farther} specific feature{peculiarity} is the spritzwassergeschützte keyboard: The keyboard sits as a whole on a concluded{closed} "tablet" by which no liquids{fluidities} in the mainboard can reach{get}.
Centrino Per meets NVidia GeForce 8600 m GT: The Asus V1S is a business notebook with Gaming ambitions
Also before the Status-LEDs Asus with the exclusive design does not do{make} hold.
The watertight keyboard sits as a whole on a loose{removable} board.
Connections
The connection equipment is entire, the newest standards like eSATA and HDMI exist, modules Bay to easy{simple} taking out of the DVD disk drive (also during the company{operation}) and insert to the second hard disk or an additional battery as well as camera and Fingerprintreader make the equipment perfect.
In addition{Moreover}, the notebook offers another two MiniCard (miniPCI v2.0) slots for Intel of TurboMemory and UMTS / HSDPA or other extension{expansion} cards. However, to the installation the whole{complete} cabinet must be opened (see picture{image}).
Behind: Battery{Accumulator}, Kensington Luring
Right page: CardReader, ExpressCard slot, combo port USB/eSATA, page / PDIF Line Out, microphone, USB, FireWire
Left page: Gigabit LAN, S. video Out, VGA, 2xUSB, HDMI, Modular Bay
Two free miniCard slots are on the mainboard to the installation of Intel of TurboMemory and UMTS to modules (on top on the left{left})
Of the Modular Bay allows the change between DVD disk drive, hard disk or battery{accumulator} in the running company{operation}.
Input devices
Stable buttons, clear and hard action point as well as high button hub (2.5 mms) make the keyboard for strong{hefty} fingers very pleasant to write{compose}. While tapping the keyboard does not bend, up to the Entertaste no rattles are to be put out{turned off} while typing. The writing feeling of the keyboard strongly moves in the direction of desktop keyboard.
However, the arrow keys have got a little bit small and the FN button on the left{left} from the STRG button is for those who are used to it the other way round, need getting used to, allowed, however, also a lighter{simpler} service{operation} of the blue selected Num-Pad and special buttons.
In addition{Moreover}, the keyboard is covered with a kind of shining coating{lamination} which works{has an effect} like a layer of dry{dehydrated} paste and probably protects the buttons against attrition or contributes to the writing feeling.
The Touchpad responds very well to the finger movements and is pleasant with his{its} easily angerauten face to serve. Nevertheless, the Touchpadtasten are a little bit small{little} on account of the Firngerabdruckscanners in the middle and are rather treacly current with the click what claims the finger muscles a little bit strongly.
Display
Here speaks Asus plaintext: The matt WSXGA + display with a resolution of 1680x1050 pixels fascinates by his{its} excellent brightness, nice colour shades and pleasant contrast. The high resolution provides for miraculous overview, two Word documents or two Explorerfenster can be indicated{displayed}, for example, side by side what can be very practical in many situations{positions}.
The display is still also perfectly readable with direct{straight} solar irradiation from the back what allows a trouble-free application{operation} outside.
However, typically for matt displays lies a körniger veil on the display which is to be recognised{seen} with white backgrounds well, however, on the display has no annoying consequences.
The point of view stability of the display is distinguished{priced}, the display is readable in the horizontal range{area} without Farbfelfälschungen nearly 180 °. In the vertical range{area} the view corner is still very good.
Merely the white surfaces which accept{confirm} a warm yellow tone in case of lateral consideration are falsified.
Display outside with solar irradiation from the front and direct{straight} solar irradiation from the back.
Point of view stability of the display.
Comparison between the display of a midmonth-notebook (136cd / m 2 , on the left{left}) and the Asus display (on the right).
Capacity{Performance}
Actually, office capacity should stand with a business notebook in the foreground, however, also with the graphics capacity Asus has not saved and makes the V1S also for Zocker extremely attractive.
The V1S can join in in the league of the Gamernotebooks like the Acer Aspire 5920, to the Zepto Znote to 6625WD or the Nexoc Osiris E619.
In the Asus V1S a NVidia GeForce 8600 m GT provides for enough graphics power.
CPU, graphics card, Ram and HDD are slightly accessible.
Issues{Emissions}
Volume
The fan{ventilator} of the V1S is annoying clearly audible, however, a little, but keeps in the office company in the background. However, real rest does not call in{does not stop}. Under load the fan{ventilator} does not become excessively{overmuch} loudly.
Nevertheless, has struck the DVD disk drive which with reading accesses and writing accesses (Insert to a CD, burning) causes strong vibrations in the cabinet and therefore generates{produces} a loud hum. This is a concomitant of the modules Bay in which the DVD disk drive is inserted and does not stick therefore to the cabinet margin 100%, because it is not screwed together.
Warm development
Clear warming{heating} arises{surrenders} on the upper page in the range{area} of the Handballenauflage to the right of the Touchpads, that is about the Ramslots. In the bottom side the cabinet likewise, above all{especially}, on the right page in the range{area} of the Ramslots and the CPU becomes clearly warm.
A more uniform warm distribution would be desirable here, because the left hand remains unmoved practically{virtually}, while the right hand must not freeze in winter absolutely.
However, in the office company the warming{heating} accepts{confirms} no annoying magnitudes{dimensions}.
Battery run time
Result
With the V1S has proceeded Asus on the search for the perfect notebook. The equipment is complete, the capacity{performance} strongly. Business customers as well as Zocker come{get} at her{their} expense and the device, besides{by the way}, thanks to good battery run time and great display is mobile also. The cabinet could be more stable, nevertheless, the materials{evidence} are extremely high-quality and there a business notebook for reliability stands no worry is actually right here.
The perfect notebook? Almost. However, with the V1S I probably had the notebook in the hand which comes{gets} to this destination in allernähesten.
Per:
- Equipment fullness (HDMI, eSATA, Centrino Per, WebCam, Fingerprintreader, Modular Bay)
- Scope of supply and Asus software
- Capacity{Performance}
- Display
Against:
- a little warp resistant cabinet
- raised{increased} issue values
- no hardware WLan/BT racketeer
Benchmarks and test of the battery run time follow{track}! -

So, the notebook arrived here on friday but I only had little time to play with out till now. Therefore u get an incomplete review for now. I will add stuff like pictures, benchmarks within the week. I also haven't looked for any mistakes in spelling or grammar (and I'm not a native english speaker) so excuse any mistakes you might find.
The V1S is the successor of the V1Jp and therefore a 15.4" Notebook from the Asus Business Line. It is based on the new Intel Santa Rosa platform and uses the new DX10 compatible graphics solution Geforce 8600GT from NVidia.
Specifications:
Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 (2.00GHz/ 800MHz FSB/ 4MB L2 cache)
Nvidia GeForce 8600GT with 512MB dedicated memory
2048MB DDR2-667 RAM
160GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive
15.4" WSXGA (1680x1050) matte display
Windows Vista Business
8X DVD Super Multi drive with LigthScribe
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN WLAN
Internal Bluetooth
HDMI and eSATA
Weigth: 2.9kg
USB mouse, carrying bag, a cleaning cloth, a cable holder
Reason for buying:
I was looking for notebook to replace my old desktop. Therefore I needed one with a good display and graphics card. And the notebook needs to last at least 3 years so I wanted one with a good build quality. I decided on the Asus because it was supposed to be high quality for a very reasonable price. And it was pretty much the first business notebook available with Santa Rosa (besides the T61p, which is available in Germany but I wasn't sure about the WUXGA display and it is quite expensive here).
Build & design:
I personally really like the design of the notebook: not as boring as the HP and Lenovo business models but also not flashy like the Acer 5920 or the Asus G1. The build is also quite good. The case is mainly made of a plastic-like material and has a few metal parts. It is sturdy enough so that you can pick up the notebook on just one edge. The hinges are stiff so that the display doesn’t move by itself. The lid itself is sturdier than most notebooks I've seen but you still can cause rippling on the screen when applying some force. The keyboard has a little to no flex und I feel comfortable typing on it.
But there is one thing that I'm really disappointed with: I got rid of the stickers and tried to remove the glue first with water and then with alcohol and the alcohol easily removed the color on the metal frame around the keyboard. I don’t think the color should come off that easily.
Screen:
The screen is a WXSGA matte screen. I really like the high resolution and the amount of space you have on the desktop. And the display is extremely bright - especially for a matte display. It is a lot brighter then my dads LG T1 and my sisters Asus A6Q (both glare displays) and even can compare to my desktop LCD. The viewing angles are also good.
So overall I'm really impressed by the screen especially since it was my major concern.
Speakers:
The speakers are located to left and right of the keyboard and produce an acceptable sound. The have the usual lack of bass that you can exhibit with nearly all notebook speakers. But since I'm spoiled from my big HiFi speakers I won't be using the speakers for music and rather take a pair of headphones with me.
Heat & Noise:
Up to now I mostly used the notebook in the high performance mode. The whole keyboard and palm rest area gets a little warm but not uncomfortably - even the right side of the palm rest (above the hard disk). The opposite is true for the area below the notebook. This area gets really so you probably shouldn't use the notebook on your lap (at least in high performance mode). The right side of the notebook also gets quite warm because the fan is located there. The fan is audible but not loud at all. It runs the whole time in high performance mode but in battery savings mode it stops every once in a while.
Battery:
I haven’t done an actual battery test but windows approximates about 2:50h in battery savings mode (that is with vista and without any configurations from me). I'm satisfied with that. And in case I need more battery life I can just buy the ultra bay battery. -

I find it odd that you are listing the screen as matte, I know in the USA at least it is Glossy (ColourShine). Could you post a screen shot using Ntune of the memory and Core frequencies? Im still going to withhold judgement on this until the US model appears, Asus has been known to use different parts in different markets. Speaking of which, Shouldnt we be seeing the V1s this week in the USA? Mid August puts the release date from basically this monday to friday.
-
Wait wait wait... You Europeans get a matte display?! I thought the V1s/V2s were going to have glossy? Hmmm. I have hope now.
-
Anyone here have experience in changing the keyboard? Since the thing costs about 2000€ here I could get it for 600€ cheaper from Germany. So the question is how hard is it to change the keyboard? You need any specific bios drivers or whatnot since it'll be different keys for the åäö keyboard?
*EDIT* And anyone know where I could gtet the åäö version of the keyboard. Local Asus store?
