Anyone know if this laptop will have a cooling fan on the bottom of the laptop? From the pictures I saw on the Asus global site it looks like there is a fan on the right side of the laptop.

I would guess it has the exhaust on the right side and the intake on the underside.

Trying to wait patiently for this one to make an appearance. Too bad this isn't an option on the "Buy In" packages that are being discussed. Sounds like there is quite a bit of interest in it.

Anybody get an estimated time of arrival on one of these yet? I am eager to read a review on it...specifically on the build quality over the last generations model...I am sure everything else will be top notch on it. I need to decide quick if I will be getting this or the 8150p/T61P.

I've seen release dates anywhere between the 8th and the 30th of August. Personally, I think late August / early September is most likely. For a detailed review (the likes of NBR reviews) I'd guess a week or two after that. We may see reviews from other websites (cnet) before then, though.

When some people have the V1s, can someone test for the battery wear issue for me? I am curious to see if it is still around in the new notebooks, as it seems Asus is doing nothing to help those that are already infected with it.

The specs say that the V1s has 3 USB 2.0 ports and later on it also says:
Does this mean there are 4 USB ports? I kinda understand what E-SATA, but it is a little confusing that the same port can also support USB.

for those that are already infected with it...dunno

    for the new V1s
they really don't need to since the new Santa Rosa platform would have made them redesign the BIOS settings.

The only thing about the pre-configured specs that I'm not satisfied with is the lack of 7200 rpm hard drive option. I suppose I could swap it manually after purchase. Does anyone know what's involved in terms of transferring the contents of the original drive that was preloaded by the manufacturer?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Tim,
The Combo-Port can used One USB -OR- One E-Sata-Port (E-Sata is the External-SATA-Version from the SATA-HDD-Connection).. that means do you can alternatively one of this Port on this Connection - so you have 4 USB / 3xUSB + 1xE-SATA on the Asus-NB.

PS: Sorry 4 my english, i'll hope do you understand me!

If you had the new hard drive and wanted to transfer to it as soon as you got the computer it would be relatively easy. Most Asus notebook come with recovery CDs. So, put in the CD, and recover on the new hard drive.

Also, you can check out the ports on the V1S by going here:
    http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=23&l3=523&l4=21&model=1780&modelmenu=1
and clicking 'Enlargement' to see pictures of each side of the laptop.
I count 4 USB ports (including the eSATA/USB one). Ignore the miss-labelled mic-in port >_>.

Also, I've spotted yet another mistake on ASUS' website. If you go to the above link, there's a section which reads:

Today the first retailers in Germany listed the V1S on stock and can be purchased. The cheapest price is €1365,-. This is for the German V1S AJ016E with T7300 2.0 GHz CPU. I mailed one of the retailers to tell me if the 8600M GT 512MB has DDR2 or DDR3, because on his site he claims it to have DDR3. Let´s see what he answers.

hello , iam going to buy a v1s from http://1toppc.com/ for 1839, but iam not sure about the disply, is it shiny or matt? do you have some photos or videos? i like the mirror like displays more...

and then i have a dilema, i can have a c90 with the same as v1s + 2,66 (instate of 2.2 as by v1s) processor but without 1gb Memory Ribon and that just for 1600 (from velocitymicro.com)... but the c90 has this 4 ugly fans on the back site :((

    whats your opinion?

Their two very different machines. I would go with the V1s, Ive never heard of that website, Would you consider going with ExcaliburPC instead? Their service is really brilliant, They do free shipping, And they might price match that for you. It makes a big difference when the staff are helpful and happy to talk to you.

Oh the V1S is "Glossy" which means Shiny

You might want to check out Eddie's site btotech.com. He is offering a V1s pre-order for $1779 with free shipping. That is $120 off the MSRP value, however this offer is only good for the first 30 pre-orders.

Does anyone here want to organize a V1s group buy? I am not exactly supposed to start one since I am a mod, but I want to get the best deal I can get on the V1s. :p I am feeling kinda left out since the Canadian (and possibly the US) V2s pre-orders from milestone are going to get the docking station for free.

    Not that Eddie's $120 off pre-order isn't bad...

Im sure it still has HDMI, It would cost to much to take it out in some markets and not others, More likely the betterit page that was taken from hasnt listed it. I also find it odd that we get the 2.0ghz one, RRP is $2699 AUD but http://www.betterit.com.au/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=93642 has it for $2483. Im kinda torn between buying here and importing, Works out to be $2650 if I import and I get the 2.2ghz and the modular battery, but it will take an extra 2 weeks to get to me, And dosent have the ultimate edition.

On the german website of ASUS you can download the user´s manual of the V1S in english (dated Apr. 07). In the technical section it shows a hdmi port not a micro dvi.

Are there any other places offering v1s pre-order in Australia other than the link provided by Matt?
It gets the hassle of going through the customs out and less waiting time. At $2483 not too bad at all. (despite the fact it's T7300).

Is there gonna be significant difference between the 2.0 and 2.2? I'm so torn between what to get. At first I had my mind set on the Fujitsu E8410H but then found out it has a matte screen. I then considered the HP DV9520tx which I can get at a really low price at my brother's work place but didn't want another HP as my first notebook was an HP and I didn't have a good experience with them.

So now the Asus V1s, it's the most expensive one out of the bunch but it has everything that I could possible want in a notebook other than the processor!!!

    HELP GUYS !!

It really depends on what you intend to use the notebook for. But in general, the impression I get from posters on this forum is that the difference between the two processors is negligible when you take into account other components (graphics card, hard disk drive, RAM, and so on). That's for neighboring processors (e.g. the T7300 to T7500), though. For bigger differences between CPU (e.g. T7100 to T7500) then there is obviously a more pronounced difference.

In real, practical life, you will probably never notice the .2 Ghz difference, keep in mind, thats only 200 Mhz. My cell phone has a processor twice that fast, so it won't make a huge difference. The times it might matter are encoding type things and benchmarks. Benchmarks are obvious, and if you live of off them, you need help.

Hi SWOOp, you probably bought yours by mediafrost. I just contacted Tim Lorenz from Mediafrost about the 8600GT DDR issue and he told me he did not
know himself and could not look because he just sold the last one he had.
When you get yours please tell me/us what kind of memory the 8600M GT has

1400 Euro is much less than it will cost us in the UK. Is it possible to buy it from Mediafrost and have it shipped to the UK? Anyone know what the tax issues are?

I'm going to make a review as soon as possible. Regarding the VRAM: how do you find out if it is DDR3 or not?

    @sunchaser99
What is "WEI" supposed to mean?

    @Jabberwooky
yes, I bought at mediafrost. this morning according to his site he still had about 80 NBs in stock :D
This notebook apparently sells very good.

To see what kind of DDR is used you just use a program like Everest or Sandra (Hardware check programms).

WEI (Windows Experience Index) is a performance index of Vista. It tells you something about the vista rating for your cpu, memory, graphics, gaming graphics and hard disk.

This is the score Windows Vista assigns to the computer. The score is between 1 and 5, 5 being the best. It actually measures different parts of the system, and then assigns the lowest score to the entire computer.

has anyone heard of any info on the wieght of the v1s?
im at a toss up between the v1s and the older f3sv-a1/b1...
wieght/8600 GT/dock, and the modular bay are the main reasons im considering the v1s...but if its not significantly lighter then the f3sv then spending the extra few hundrad may not be worth it to me....

im beocoming very impatient like all of you, i would love to see a review...
