Hi Dtrump..... I just got my V1S about a week ago and haven't installed that many programs but as far as I can tell I've had no problems after installing Vista Sp1 on it. Installed and played Unreal Tournament 3 for aboutan hour and everything worked smoothly (CPU an GPU temps were at 70°C).... So anyway no crashes or blue screens..Have a good one

DTrump forgot to mention I´m using Vista Business 32bit. Has anyone tried dualbooting XP onto these laptops (Not over excited with Vista in it's present state)

I'm currently using 32-bit Ultimate, and dual-booting with XP, but I hardly ever boot into XP anymore. I am hoping to move to 64-bit Ultimate soon, but I am waiting for Microsoft to release the 64-bit Connector software for Windows Home Server. WHS has saved me enormous amounts of time when testing configurations and reloading backups, and gives me some peace of mind, knowing that my machine is backed up every night.

Just load XP onto your laptop first (look for matt_h1's post on here for the correct driver list), and load Vista after that. You can use a program like VistaBootPro to configure the boot order and primary OS (if you want to set XP as your main OS, or change the description of the boot menu entries).

Working on it now, starting with a clean install on an extra partition first. I downloaded the 64-bit version with SP1 integrated, since I wanted to move to x64 anyway.

Unfortunately, I've run into a couple of issues, and it looks like it it mainly due to video drivers...after I get Vista up and running, and log in for the first time as Administrator, I install the Intel Chipset drivers (standard first thing to do). After a reboot, I install the ACPI drivers, and reboot again. After I install the video drivers from the Asus site (just to get a base installation, before I grab the laptopvideo2go drivers), I cannot get my Windows Experience Index to update.

I've actually tried a couple different combinations of drivers, installation orders, even re-installed Vista to be sure there wasn't something screwed, but still no luck.

So, I'm continuing to work on it, but still use my 32-bit installation (non-SP1) until I get it completed. Hopefully soon.

i just have the 400MB install from microsoft, where i can get the whole vista dvd with sp1 integrated (to install vista directly with sp1)???

why do you move to 64? i heard it has compatybility issues and you cannot run old programmes and you cannot install unsigned drivers (how was it possible to you to install video driver from laptopvideo2go?)

is the 64 bit version also included on the default vista cd?

maybe the cause of the failed install of my sp1 was one of these :
    - i used VistaGlazz
    - i moved the WHOLE documents and settings to another disk (with FAT32 to get a faster performance)

else i dont see any other problem

I've got an MSDN subscription, so I downloaded the whole thing from there the other night, and burned it to a DVD.

As far as moving to 64-bit, why not? It will let me take full advantage of all 4 GB of RAM I have in my V1S, and with me using multiple virtual machines in Virtual PC, I need that extra 1 GB. Plus, it seems like the majority of the drivers are available, and most, if not all, of my programs will run, so I'm giving it a shot. If it doesn't work, I'll just image the partition off, and try again later. No big deal.

I just read someone else make a comment that using Vista Glazz can cause problems:

I downloaded the 432mb update yesterday. Took about 30min to install, no probs.

Did you apply all availble updates from Windows Update beforehand?
    Here is the link mentioned
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366

They talk a lot about filesystem related stuff

FWIW, the error code is something todo with copying
    http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2343991&SiteID=17

This one makes me wonder if the FAT32 filesystem is causing it.

yes, i done everything in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947366

by sfc /scannow it writes, that some files need to be fixed after reboot, so i reboot, but when i run sfc /scannow it writes the same out,... i think thats related to vistaglazz, which changes some files to be able to use own *.msstyle

can i also get access to this Vista 64 SP1 dvd over MSDN?

    text from sfc /scannow

If you have a paid MSDN Downloads subscription, yes, you can (fortunately, my company pays for ours).

I just got mine up and running. I downloaded and installed the latest ForceWare drivers from laptopvideo2go (174.53), and it finally allowed me to update my WEI. "Only" a 4.5, but better than the 1.0 I was stuck with when it wouldn't update before.

As of right now, everything is up and running from a base OS standpoint (as far as I have been able to verify). Now, I just need to start re-installing applications once I make an image of this hard drive, and then I can get back to doing real work. Or not. :D

    so i reinstalled whole vista

btw, you did only get a recovery DVD to your ASUS, whats can you do (to dont have all the asus unnecesserities / trials installed) and is absolut LEGAL, you can download
    32
    http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4087732/32-bit_Windows_Vista_with_SP1_x32_Edition_MSDN_DVD_ISO
    or
    64
    http://thepiratebay.org/tor/4084647/64-bit_Windows_Vista_with_SP1_x64_Edition_MSDN_DVD_ISO

and activate it with YOUR KEY (you cannot activate 64 with 32 key), and its ABSOLUT LEGAL

but to the core of the problem :
    - the fan stillls runs at maximum, even when the computer starts up and is absolut cold
    - i get an Intel ME arrer during bootup :(

elvenone, for the fan problem I'd bet on an hardware issue. It could be dust on the fan. I don't know if you lost warranty if you open that part of the chassis, but you could send a question to ASUS support and see what they tell.

About Intel ME, try to reinstall the chipset drivers or anything related to Intel ME.

    Just trying to help.

Hmm I got some answers like that here in Portugal when I complained about the faulty NVidia Card.. I only got a real support when I contacted my reseller. They made some tests asked by ASUS and finally the RMA order was posted. Only took 5 days at reseller + 5 days in ASUS, but they solved it.

I don't know how it is in Australia, but if you can't get no help, you should complain legally. In Portugal we have DECO (Portuguese Association for Defense of the Consumer, something like that) that can provide pressure to the Company, in this case ASUS, plus the bad reputation that goes public through DECO Magazine, and it can even can provide a lawyer if it goes on to a legal problem.

I'd advise you to seek other kind of help.

I hope you understand all I said, I think my English is not that sharp :)

so, i solved the problem with the fan, a manual bios reset helped (through the hole on the bottom), now the fan behaves normal :)

    note :
DO NOT USE VIDEO DRIVERS FROM LAPTOPVIDEO2GO

with the original driver from asus, i got 2916 points in 3D Mark 2006, with other drivers from laptopvideo2go (including the newest, i tested about 4) i got 2500 - 2700 points

    Hi Guys

A simple question without making a complete ass of myself. I've tried a couple of Nvidia drivers both from Asus and Laptopvideo2go and I'm unable to get a higher refresh rate than 54hz (Actually on only refresh rate available) is this normal for the V1S with a 8600M GT card ? Looking through the mode info from Asus it seems as I should be able to obtain 60hz. Any help is welcomed.Everyone have a good one.

Maybe your LCD panel runs at 54Hz? As far as I can tell, for internal LCD panels there is just one "native" refresh rate available...

edit: but I've never researched this thing, so I may be wrong...

Has anyone had any issues with their keyboard? For some reason, the Enter key on mine does not respond unless I hit it just right. If I am off to the left or right too much, the keystroke does not enter.

Is this something that I may be able to correct myself (other than just hitting it in the middle every time :D), or should this be (another) warranty claim, along with the battery issues and the grey/black blotch on the screen?

Sometimes keyboards go bad - the fact that it works but you have to hit it *just* right suggests that it's either a contact or ribbon cable problem.

Easiest fix would be to order a new keyboard (they're less than $20, I believe) and swap them out, or talk to Asus if you're still under warranty and see if they'll send one to you..... seems silly to RMA the entire unit for something like that (if in fact I'm correct).

So, has anyone else made the move to 64-bit Vista with 4 GB RAM? Just curious, since my installation of it is painfully slow, taking upwards of 4 or 5 minutes to boot. And this is with a fairly base installation (only Office, Firefox 2, and an additional couple of applications).

Strangely enough, I removed one of my 2 GB sticks of RAM and replaced it with one of the 1 GB sticks that came with the laptop, and it actually booted up much faster (down to less than 1 minute).

I'm pretty sure I have loaded all of the latest drivers that have been released, as well as updated the BIOS to version 301 to see if that fixed anything, but that still didn't do anything. Just curious if anyone else has seen anything similar on their V1S, or if they are cranking along as usual.

I've been running Server 2008 x64 (same codebase as Vista x64) with 4GB of RAM for half a year and it runs great. There is definitely something wrong if it's taking 4-5 minutes to boot.

Given your description about taking out the 2GB stick, it's possible that you may have bad or incompatible RAM.

Exact same notebook as the V1S, except it's got a Penryn (with SSE4) and a "9500M GS". Why it's called a 9500 I don't know... it's basically an 8600M GT on a smaller manufacturing process.

About 20 more minutes of battery life under most conditions... but don't expect lower temps for the GPU. The fan spin is still soley dependant upon the CPU temperature.

I've asked this in another thread but this seems to be a more adequate place to put it.

I've picked up my V1sn yesterday. Everything is great except the screen wich has the grain problem.

Does anyone here knows if the WSXGA+ screens in V1S or V1sn are all grainy?. If not what brand.

And if I get the WXGA+ is there a big probability of ge a better screen?

    Thank you.

Hi DTrump, this is a well known issue, I have been struggling witj it for more than a week and then I found this:
    http://btoforums.com/showthread.php?t=1207

Actually I contacted BTO even though I bought mine V1S elsewhere and they were really helpful and provided me with this link. As for my system only 32MB RAM deduction was enough. It solved my problem. Good luck

Not all screens are grainy, just send to to RMA or have it replaced at the store where you bought it(if possible). I had a problem with display (white spots) and after RMA they gave me a grainy screen. I just sent it back and it was replaced without questions.

There is 302 BIOS released for V1SN. Will it work for V1S?

NO. Don't use BIOSes that are not specifically released for your notebook.

That is actually not true. Those two notebooks are the same except for processor and graphics card. The bios is interchangable. The official link for the latest V1S bios is: http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/V1S/V1Sn301AS.zip As you can see, it is actually also for V1Sn. I already flashed mine V1S with version 3.02 hoping that the 4GB RAM issue has been fixed, but it hasn't and I haven't noticed any other changes.

I figured that might be the case, but I gave the safe advice first (better safe than brick your laptop).

If a V1Sn BIOS file is linked from the ASUS support page for V1S, then you can use it. Otherwise, don't do it. (CPU and GPU can, and do, require different BIOS code)

I have to downgrade four laptops from Vista to XP, two of them are v1s the other two v1jp. Now there is a nice driver package for the v1s to find on asustreiber.de but there isn´t one for the v1jp (yet). Does anyone know if the v1s package might work on the v1jp?
    thanx already...

I don't know, but I'd try the drivers. Many of the components on the mainboard may be similar.

First, check the FTP folders for V1J, V1Jp, V1S and V1Sn, see if there aren't any XP drivers available there. V1J drivers should be most similar to V1Jp, and V1S to V1Sn.

Also check the Info booth (link in my sig) to see if anyone posted an XP downgrade guide for either notebook. Usually those have driver links.

    Hi group,

Anyone had some success overcloaking their GPU? So far I've been able to get 3771 in 3dmark06 with laptopvideo2go 169.09 drivers. Also, anybody had problems with p4g utilities? My laptop actually run much faster under moderate battery saving than maximum performance.

The power profiles must be messed up. I suggest reinstalling P4G, or using RMClock instead (without undervolting). Also make sure the ACPI drivers are properly installed.

    I don't know about overclocking.

Hi Guys...I´ve been getting the BSOD a few times when I turn off the wireless button on my puter, has anyone here had this problem. This is the code I get

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
    OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.6
    Locale ID: 1039

    Additional information about the problem:
    BCCode: a

If anyone could push me in the right direction I would be very thankful. This is the only problem I've had with the V1S in the 8 months since I bought it.
Anyway thanks in advance and everyone have a good weekend.

Well, off the bat your V1S has a 8600GS/GT and the V1J/p has an X1600/1700.

There's also the fact that V1Jp had an IR which was removed in V1S in favor of an eSATA port (I think it's a JMicron-based unit).

And I believe someone said the webcam was a bit different? (not sure about this one).

Those devices aside, the best way to determine cross-compatibility of those drivers is to go through the device properties and check the Device Instance tab in System Properties to see if the VID and PID are the same between both V1J and V1S laptops. If they aren't, you can still check to see if the VID/PID entries for both units are in the INF files of the drivers.

Have you changed your WiFi drivers or ATK drivers recently? From Microsoft, Intel, or ASUS? Typically, you must use the drivers provided by the notebook integrator (ie: ASUS) to ensure proper functionality. You CANNOT use the drivers that come from Microsoft or from Intel directly without losing functionality. Meaning you should download and use the latest version on ASUS' site (even if it is a few versions older than the Intel or Microsoft site).

The reasoning is that if you use Intel's drivers directly, it doesn't have the module to talk with the ASUS ATK100 drivers for the buttons. In a situation like that, the LED and switch cannot be trusted -- you can have the WiFi on when you think it isn't. Or worse, the button software might try to tell the WiFi driver to do something that it isn't expecting and cause the PC to crash.

So, if you upgraded your drivers recently, reinstall the ones from ASUS. If you installed SP1 and it just started, maybe you need a new driver upgrade from ASUS. Otherwise, reinstall the driver from ASUS' website for good measure just to be sure it's correct. if it still doesn't work after that, it might be another piece of software conflicting with it and might need a reinstall of Windows, or it might be simply a hardware problem (which would be difficult to prove without doing a fresh install of Windows somewhere or swapping the WiFi card).

Overclocking a notebook GPU is typically not a good idea unless the unit is built as a workstation-grade laptop. The V1 heatsink isn't designed with much overhead, since it's designed as a light-weight business-class laptop and not really geared towards CAD and architects.

Further, you might note that there are some threads in this forum where people with the V1 have overheating problems where the system just shuts down after running extended periods of time.

If you have multiple programs managing the power management, you might get conflicting modes of operation. You might want to look at Notebook Hardware Control or something to that effect if you're saying P4G isn't working quite so well.

Thx E.B.E an AlexF. I reinstalled all drivers and utilities for ATK and WiFi off the cd that came with the puter (Nothing newer at the Asus support site) and so far everything is great, I should know in a couple of days as I didn't get the BSOD every time I turned the Wireless off. Again thanks a lot guys an have a good one.

    Hello

    1) PART
is there a chance to get new driver than as on
    http://support.asus.com/download/download_item.aspx?product=3&model=V1S&SLanguage=de-de

cause they are pretty "unupdated" (2008/01/14)

i also have the experience, that the original vga driver is faster than the one from laptopvideo2go

    2) PART
do you have also problems with overheating? i bought an extrenal cooler, and have to run on "battery saving mode" to get CPU temps 60~75 C

    external cooler + battery saving
    60~75 C
    external cooler + performance
    75~85 C
external cooler + performance + playing heroes V
    90~100 C

    battery saving
    70~80 C
    performance
    80~90 C
    performance + playing heroes V
    90~101 C

after it reaches 100 it downclocks the cpu and gpu, and the performance is reduced :(

how do you handle that?? i was thinking of opening the back chassi of my nb, so the cooling gets better, can i do that without loosing warranty, cause i see no warranty seal that i can break

That's a sure thing, the v1s has a different camera, but both drivers are easy to find :D

Thanks for pointing out the difference between JP and S, it's pretty useful
